mechanical or power issues. bus bridges have been set up. temperature reached 98 degrees in saratoga today as firefighters trained to prepare for the fire season that is underway. fire officials say conditions may be the worst in decades. david louie was with the firefighters training in the extreme heat today and he is live from the lexington reservoir. >> reporter: it was right along that ridge line behind us here that the massive fire broke out in 1985 taking with it about three dozen or more homes and barns. the fear is that it could happen again. that is why firefighters are out training today in an effort to try to be prepared. >> we have a grass fire moving at a with structures threatened. >> this is how firefighters are having to train because of a high fire danger. it is a sand box where they can

simulate a fire and coordinate ground crews and arial drops but is least demanding. other drills require intense physical work with heavy turnout gear. such as cutting fire lines removing brush tree limbs and other vegetation that can feed a fire. >> the fire will burn up to the line and consums the fuel and from that point forward hopefully we don't get spots over that line. >> reporter: drafting water to charge fire hoses and laying hose lines 200 feet at a time is also tough physical work. in a real fire where flames are generating their heat the intensity would be even worse. all of this is preparation by agencies across the region for a potentially serious event. most weren't around when the lexington fire burned 14,000 acres and destroyed 32 buildings. it was the second worst in local records.

worst was 1948 when 19,000 acres burned. joe parker now a deputy chief fought the lexington fire as a young man. >> in that area it hasn't significantly burned since then. it is ready once again. the fuels are in worse shape than they were back then. >> reporter: that is whey they are training today even in oppressive heat. in saratoga david louie, abc 7 news. the holiday is coming and fireworks pose one of the biggest threats in terms of wildfire. a north bay teenager is under arrest for trying to sell illegal fireworks on craig's list. this is the picture of the 16 year old boy. police did not have trouble catching him. they posed as customers answering the ad and arrested the boy at the home. the stockton police department is mourning the loss of one of their k-9s after the air conditioning in a police car failed. officers were on the way to catch a suspect. they left nitroin the car. police say the air conditioner

stopped working and that caused nitroto overheat. the police department tweeted this picture of the two girls who felt so sorry and tried to cheer up the officers. a woman died and five other people were hurt in a traffic accident outside a terminal. police spent the day trying to figure out what happened. abc 7 news reporter joins us now with more. >> reporter: we can tell you that traffic here at the airport should get back to normal within the next hour or so. if you take a look behind me the accident happened at the entrance to the parking structure when one car collided with an suv. police tell us they will be relying on surveillance video provided by the airport to help determine what happened. at the san jose international airport travelers try to process the scene in front of them. >> i think something bad had happened because of the tape and the police vehicles. >> reporter: at around 10:30

this morning a two vehicle collision just outside the parking structure at terminal b. san jose police tell us the occupant driver crashed into a silver audi suv. the driver of the red car, a 25-year-old woman did not survive. the family in the suv was taken to a local hospital all with nonlife threatening injuries. >> we want to have fun and get where we are going. we all have obligations we are trying to meet. >> reporter: visitor was traveling back to arizona this afternoon. she hopes people learn a lesson from today's accident. >> no moment is more important than right now. they get so involved with what they are on the way to. >> reporter: investigators cleared the scene four hours after the crash occurred. >> sometimes these are the results of people not being careful and driving slowly. we don't want this to happen to anybody else. anytime you have a traffic fatality that is one too many. >> reporter: a message ahead of

the holiday weekend. >> don't try to rush in. take your time and drive safely. >> reporter: in san jose abc 7 news. a private plane landed at hayward airport this morning with no landing gear. sky 7 hd was over the scene shortly after the plane touched down. the pilot was the only person on board and was not hurt. the plane is registered to an architect. it's not clear if he was the person at the controls this morning. one person is recovering from minor injuries after a two alarm fire this afternoon at an apartment complex. it happened about 1:00 this afternoon. the fire department put the flames out in about 15 minutes. the cause of the fire is being investigated. former state senator pleaded guilty today in federal court to a racketeering charge and could face 20 years in prison. abc 7 news reporter vic lee

joins us with the details. >> three others changed their pleas to guilty in the same court hearing. they face from four to ten years in prison. he was among dozens arrested in march of last year following a long sting. the cases against the others are proceeding separately. the most prominent of those arrested the so-called big fish. >> former state senator left the courthouse immediately after entering his plea. he did not respond to reporters' questions as he entered a waiting car. he was set to go to trial next month on political corruption, money laundering. instead he agreed to a plea deal with federal prosecutors guilty to one count of racketeering of taking part in a criminal enterprise, to use his political position to accept bribes. three other defendants pleaded guilty. former san francisco school president keith jackson pleaded

guilty to the same racketeering charge. his attorney blasted the fbi for ensnaring his client. >> is this government doing what we want them to do? do we really want people sitting back there doing this? and my answer is no. >> reporter: jackson's son also pleaded guilty but to a separate racketeering charge linking him with a china town fraternal group headed by china town mobster who is also indicted in this case. sports agent marlin sullivan pleaded guilty to the same racketeering count with these underlying crimes. >> he associated and helped in the transfer of guns, attempted purchase of 10 kilos of cocaine. >> reporter: there four will be sentenced later this year. >> vic lee reporting. fremont police hope new

surveillance video can help catch vandals who destroyed the almeida dam in may. police say vandals are responsible for releasing more than 49 million gallons of fresh water into the san francisco bay during morning hours of may 21. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to these people. california cities chopped up best water savings yet. state regulators say a 29% cut in water use in urban areas in may compared to the same time two years ago. people are doing their best to save water. the board says rain may have helped conservation efforts in may. water savings are measured against 2013. that was the year before governor jerry brown declared a drought emergency. east bay water utility district customers are paying more for water starting today. last month the board voted to add a 25% drought fee to every customer's bill to cover the additional cost to water

a young baseball team just claimed an east bay regional championship. these 5 and 6 year olds are from the quiet town of rodeo and are advancing to the northern california world series that is held in maupt ray county. not every family can afford to make the trip. lyanne melendez is live with how the community is helping bring the team. >> reporter: in the past these families have relied on car washes to help raise money for these kinds of events but clearly there is a drought and they can't do that this time around. they are hoping our viewers and the community here at home will help. the small east bay town of rodeo has always had a love for baseball. dreams have been made on this field starting with lefty gomez born here, a left-handed pitcher who played in the world series in the 1930s with the new york

spokesperson would not reveal which rendered scrutiny. it's official as of today. all smart phones sold in this state must be equipped with a so-called kill switch. the law is intended to make it pointless to steal a smart phone. the kill switch lets owners remotely lock phones if stolen so no one else can use it. officials say the technology has reduced crime. police reported 3.1 million smart phone robberies in 2013 but only 2.1 million last year. state lawmakers want ride hailing companies like uber and lift to receive alerts about unsafe drivers by their workers. a proposed law would require the ride companies to enroll in a notification system with the dmv. the companies would be alerted if drivers are pulled over for traffic violations or drunk driving. >> reckless driving, speeding, things like that that are of
