will never get to tell my sister that i love her again. >> reporter: a 2001 graduate kate made her way to the city working as a medical device sales representative. known for adventurous spirit she would go above and beyond to make her family laugh. >> the last time we went the four of us and my wife and just sat around and roasted marshmallows. just started throwing marshmallows at each other. it was the most fun. >> reporter: kate was with her father on pier 14 last night. he was there to take her to pleasanton to learn if his brother and wife were expecting a boy or girl. she would never get the chance. >> there is a million memories and i won't have another one with her and she won't get to meet my daughter. >> reporter: a family now searching for answers while trying to find the strength to move on. >> we love kate. i love her until the day i die.

>> reporter: with the commitment to always keep her memory alive. san francisco police say they do not have a motive for the shooting. they think it was random. today raufsofficers arrested sanchez. they say he is on probation from texas. a police boat dragging sonar equipment looking for the gun that was used. police believe sanchez tossed the weapon into the bay after shooting steinly. >> my understanding is there were no words exchanged between suspect and victim. the victim said something to the extent she didn't feel well with she realized something had taken place and fell to the ground. >> additional officers on patrol for the fourth of july holiday. san francisco police arrested a homeless man for carjacking an elderly man. police say an 85-year-old man was loading groceries into his

car when the man jumped in the driver's seat and took off. later police pulled over a vehicle in san francisco. turns out it was the stolen car. 27-year-old matthew was arrested on multiple felony charges. that gun fire erupted during pride festival last weekend. and today san francisco police say they have arrested a suspect. a street vendor was wounded early saturday evening. members of the gang task force captured the man. >> the fourth of july is just a couple of days away. today oakland police conducted what may be the biggest fireworks raid with a street value of $50,000 mere the coliseum. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez joins us from the fire station with the details.

>> reporter: just wanted to mention this is one of six fire stations here in oakland where you can drop off your fireworks no questions asked. according to the fire department today's raid was especially significant given our drought situation. >> this is the largest confiscation we have seen. >> reporter: oakland firefighters and police were so amazed by the amount of fireworks found in this basement they tweeted a picture of what they confiscated. >> we are looking approximately at about $50,000 worth of street value. >> reporter: this morning oakland pd's special investigative unit raided this house on 82nd avenue. there were so many containers that the bomb squad had to use more than one pickup truck to haul them out. police were surprised to find out there were three children living in the house. >> highly explosive. if there is a heat source that ignited this we are looking at

single family residence small children in the neighborhood with apartment buildings. >> reporter: two men were arrested. they face felony charges for each firework collected. >> the majority of those fireworks in the basement are the fireworks that go into the air. as we all know we have serious drought conditions. >> reporter: the raid came as a total surprise to randall who lives next door. >> i had no idea that was sitting next door. none. no clue at all. i'm shocked. >> reporter: investigators would not say what led them to the house but other neighbors say they had seen some activity in recent days. >> they came by in trucks and in cars and walking and buying fireworks. they have been shooting them for the last week. >> reporter: firefighters will schedule a burn day to get rid of them. in oakland, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. a judge denied a request today from the contractor who built the apartment building where a balcony collapsed in

berkeley killing six people. attorneys for the contractor argued that a restraining order should be issued against the district attorney's office during today's brief hearing in oakland. the contractor wanted to have a representative present when evidence is tested. >> at this critical point in investigating they wanted to participate in the investigation that is to be done by those who have the authority and that is the district attorney's office. >> in addition to the people who died the tragedy injured seven others most visiting the bay area for the summer. one of the survivors shared pictures via facebook as she continues to recover. her family says she is facing her recovery with quote courage and determination. a 20-year-old man is recovering after falling between 60 to 70 feet from a tree. abc 7 news was near the university of santa cruz as emergency crews responded at empire drive. firefighters say the victim

never lost consciousness but did suffer fractures. >> significant lower leg injuries but the rest of him looks to be in pretty good shape. very lucky. >> this happened late this afternoon. the victim was taken to stanford medical center for treatment. officials say the man was with a group of people when he fell. investigators are looking into how a sheriff's boat sank near bay point. it happened near 9:20 when officials say the boat took on water quickly. the engine failed and the boat started to stink. it was about a football field away from the closest shore. deputies swam to shore and were not hurt. if you are headed out of the bay area for the long weekend leave as soon as you can. take a look at the traffic right now. it is just inching along slow and go already at a slow crawl leaving the city. our camera showing traffic on

interstate 80 in berkeley not moving. barely moving as commuters and travelers head east. take a look in the east bay. it's not quite as bad. a lot of drivers headed south. no backups as far as we can tell. a live look at highway 101 inches along. head south and you can see a very slow ride as well. >> a lot of people are heading to russian river for the holiday weekend wondering how the drought is affecting recreational activities. wayne freedman is live with a look at that. >> reporter: that would be just one of many attractions. they come here for food and wine and the river and to dip their feet in the river or more. just like us. >> back off. >> super important. >> reporter: no question about

that because larry is about to send yet another flotilla of tourists down the river via inflatable canoes. >> it is wilderness. no roads no houses, no buildings. >> reporter: and water contrary to what you may have imagined even in a dry july will remember for brown laws and rationing. this river here is an example of rationing. >> have you seen this river lower? >> reporter: after a rainy winter you might see more water flowing here. the good news here is the sonoma county water agency is committed to keep water flowing into fall. >> my biggest concern is that we preserve enough water for the fish coming back in the fall. and if there is some -- doesn't rain again this winter we need water to carry into next year. >> is there enough? at this point we think there is.

soccer fields in san francisco that are covered with artificial turves but the four being prepared here there is passionate debate. >> rights of parents are really being bull dozed. >> reporter: kathleen mcgowan describes herself as a soccer mom and opponent of artificial turf. she was arrested for trying to block construction that began the day after voters approved the project last year. >> this particular is over 50% carbon plaque. if your kids are like mine they come home covered with this. >> reporter: limited research on the recycled tire pellets is inconclusive. today we learned state environmental officials will conduct another study after one in 2010 found no significant health risk. >> the pellets i think are minimal concern that we deal

with. >> reporter: she is a former soccer player now coach who thinks the artificial turf will be safer than the grass she played on. >> when i was playing throughout middle school i had constant ankle sprains and then ultimately i broke one of my ankles. >> reporter: the turf war has been fought and won by the city in numerous arenas including unanimous approval from the state coastal commission but there is still a lawsuit pending. in san francisco caroline tyler abc 7 news. san francisco mayor ed lee created a new office to handle short term rentals like air b&b intended to stream line registrations for property owners and investigate violators. so far only 700 of the 5,000 plus listings have registered despite a law passed in february. san francisco's yelp shares fell after reports the company's sale was stopped.

reports say the online review website had several interested buyers but isn't going forward with the sale. yelp hired goldman sachs to help find a qualified buyer. the next time you search for something on yahoo the results may come from google. in april yahoo's deal with microsoft bing was revised so they can work with other partners. the economy keeps adding jobs but the june employment report shows more people are leaving the job market. today's labor department reports the economy added 223,000 jobs. the jobless rate dropped to 5.3% from 5.5%. that is the lowest rate since 2008. officials say the rate fell mostly because more people have given up looking for jobs. state residents face a tougher time getting acceptance

into this freshman class at uc campuses. students from other countries or out of state received more admission offers than in the past which should bring in more revenue. admitted more than 92,000 freshmen. the number of nonresidents accepted in grew to nearly 30,500 students. we all know that distracted driving is a really big problem and cell phones are often to blame. >> michael finney is here with tips on how to drive smarter. >> you guys know you are driving down the highway and see everybody texting. lots of people do use their smart phones while driving. 7 in 10 are texting, taking selfies and using social media. 7 in 10 according to a recent at&t study. consumer reports is checking out new systems designed to work with your phone in your car so you can keep your eyes on the

road. government data shows hundreds of people a year are killed in car accidents involving cell phones. new car infotainment systems are designed to keep drivers connected without having to reach for phones. apple car play compatible with iphone and compatible with android phones. most car makers will be offering both in upcoming models. auto experts hit the road to check them out. >> this is distracting. there is no doubt about it. it is less distracting than picking up your phone and using your phone while you drive. it is better. >> reporter: the systems offer hands free calling and texting. >> read new text. >> reporter: they also offer navigation that runs off your phone allowing you to access your addresses. every time your phone's software is upgraded so is the system. isn't mounting the phone on your
