well first of all, sources close to the investigation says he admitted he shot catherine steinly here n -- on the pier. some were controversial, like the relationship between sheriff mirkarimi and ice. >> abc7 news learned divers from this boat found a gun yesterday off the waters of the pier. tests are being done but investigators believe it's the one used by sanchez, the man caught that night not far from the shooting is charged with the murder. he has a long rap sheet and has

been deported to mexico five times. and ice turned him over to the sheriff's office but the d.a.dropped the case and sheriff's office released sanchez. in a statement, ice says it requested notification prior to release so they can take him into custody again. supervisors approved policies that would prohibit releasing of violent detainers. and he was in custody again on a similar offense. sheriff mirkarimi carved out a stricter policy which in all cases would require ice to go to

he had known the girl and her family from the time she was 13 according to the sheriff's office. >> he has strong relationships with a lot of students and families as he has for years >> the questionable relationship was brought to light when the teen's mother found text messages on her daughter's cell phone in june the coach was arrested on thursday at oakland international airport. >> he departed a plane returning from the islands of hawaii, he'd been on vacation with his wife. >> detectives searched the home and the school for evidence. an emergency protective order was issued preventing the coach have having contact with the teen. christina graduated from a neighboring high school. >> people are trusting their kids their minors with adult who's claim to be doing a great job, a great service to the community and they're just abusing it. it's not okay.
