>> live from the kgo teach broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> good morning to you. it's sunday july 5th. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the forecast. here's lisa argen tracking live doppler hd. if morning lisa. >> good morning, chris. i'm watching the fog meander this morning. we are looking at the temperatures on the mild side inland but we have moisture along the coast. it's all cue to the area of low pressure offshore that will be drifting offshore all week long. here's santa cruz. check it out. from watson to santa cruz, we are wet. but inland we are sunny and mild. 62 napa. putting it all together today, temperatures coming down with numbers in the 80s in the inland valleys. breezy around the bay, 60s and

70s. once again the fog really right up to the shoreline. we will detail the week ahead, which features more cool weather coming up. chris. >> lisa, thank you. in developing news, firefighters are battling a 320-acre wildfire in vacaville that threatened several neighborhoods. a very scary scene that started just after 9:30 last night on the back side of keating park. winds gusting to more than 40 miles an hour fanned the flames. several streets were closed and residents in many areas were under a voluntary evacuation order. >> absolutely i'm nervous. we got my daughter out of here in a quick matter because she has asthma. smartest thing to do is get the children out of here. >> all roads are now open and all evacuations have been

lifted. fire is now 50% contained, but the cause is under investigation. in antioch residents pitched in it to help firefighters take care of a three-acre fire there u see where the flames came up right to the backyard walls of homes on james dolan road. it's one of the newest subdivisions. they used fire hoses and buckets to beat back the fire. flames were whipped by 15 miles per hour winds. it feels a very busy night for firefighters in contra costa county. in fact, firefighters had their hands full with brush fires burning between bay point and brentwood. this is where a grass fire came close to an apartment complex at dallas ranch road and lone tree way. it may have been sparked by a remnants of a professional fireworks show that ended moments earlier. illegal fireworks have displaced four people in san jose. officials say a neighbor's fireworks landed in the backyard of a home just before 10:00 last night.

it quickly started a two-alarm fare that spread to the house. the back of the home suffered moderate damage. the flames were put out in about 25 minutes. oakland firefighters responded to another illegal fireworks fire on skyline boulevard. it was just before 10:00 when a vegetation fire broke out about 200 feet off the road. fire officials say bystanders confirmed the accidental blaze was started by fireworks. it grew to about a quarter acre but was very difficult to get to because of steep terrain and tall vegetation. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana said the illegal fireworks in the bay area began early and often. >> before the sun set, official fireworks displays went off. this is cell phone video of illegal fireworks in oakland. police across the bay area have been especially concerned. >> we urge people, especially during the tough times with the drought and the dry conditions that fireworks can be very damaging.

>> this is why they are concerned. crews spent hours battling a brush fire in the oakland hills. justin graham noticed the smoke before his afternoon run. >> a bunch of hikers told me to stop and turn around. they said there was big fire that just happened, and they just witnessed fireworks going off and the fire starting around that and they were actively calling the fire department. >> and he also heard something. >> it's fourth of july, they might have been trying to have fun, but that's the wrong place to have fun. >> investigators found a firework on the hill and they determined it's what started the brush fire that consumed about three acres. no homes were damaged but it was still a scary afternoon this brought back memories of the deadly fire here in 1991. >> all of us in the neighborhood remember the oakland firestorm. and all of us know that it's a drought and we are all very worried about one little firework setting a fire right up over the top of this hill right into our homes. >> the almeda county sheriff's office said they devoted four deputies to patrol for illegal fireworks in hopes of keeping the holiday a save one.

sergio quintana abc7 news. >> take a look at the show of mostly illegal fireworks in the east bay. this video was recorded last night from our emeryville camera t shows a nonstop display of professional grade pyrotechnics lighting up the oakland skyline. >> now to the legal ones and of the biggest and brightest shows in the bay area. a huge crowd gathered along the waterfront to watch last night. they could hear them, but could they see them? leslie brinkley has the story. >> from pier 39 to the marina green, four barges in the bay launched 10,000 fireworks from tubes controlled by computers. patriotic precision half obscured by the fog. a lot of people gave up and left after only five minutes. >> you can't really enjoy the show, and it is not worth staying for. >> but just coming here cost a lot. >> it was $50 to park.

and earlier in the evening sparklers on their heads, flags on their back, the crowds warmed on to ledges and grassy spots to stake out a place to watch the fireworks. >> a good energy environment the music, and just everything about pier 39 is really cool. >> got to love the city and america! >> just enjoying the time. fourth of july, even though the fog is all messing us up, but that's how san francisco is. >> are you cold? >> yes. >> how cold? >> very cold. >> and i just moved to california, and this is freezing! i'm not used to this. it doesn't feel like july, it feels like december. >> but in the end it was the fog that dampened spirits. >> a lot of snap, crackle and pop, but not a lot to see on this very san francisco fourth of july. leslie brinkley, abc7 news.

>> the city of san jose topped off its fourth of july celebration with a fireworks show as discovery meadow last night. the show was revived last year of after a decade of budget cutbacks. but employee paycuts and staff shortages made it d to spend money on the spectacle. so members of the local rotary club funded the show this year as well as last year. ♪ ♪ >> so much fun. abc7 news was in downtown redwood city for one of the largest 4th of july celebrations in the bay area. that's the stanford university band getting in the action complete with dancing tree. it featured a concert and fireworks show last night. in alameda people were out early yesterday morning to get good seats for one of the largest fourth of july parades in the country. around 170 floats and 2500 people took part in the celebration. the city billed the 3-mile parade route as the longest in the u.s. and typically draws more than 20,000 spectators from

northbound 880 just south of 237. a motorist pulled the victim off the roadway. car allegedly involved in the collision is described as a newer black dodge charger or challenger with the wrap around taillights. this morning dive teams are back out at lake sonoma look for a teenage boy who fell off an inner tube and into the water. it happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. investigators tell us the boy was getting towed behind some type of personal watercraft when he fell in. divers spent the afternoon and evening searching for him. they say he was not wearing a life jacket. >> even strong swimmers should be wearing life jackets, especially being towed. >> the water is 200 to 250 feet deep in the area where he fell. at least $3000 in donations will go toward a santa clara family bury their mother. sonya died last week after falling into a river in sacramento. the body builder was celebrating her new u.s. citizenship last sunday at the rage on the river event when she somehow fell into

the water. firefighters rescued her but she died on wednesday. she leaves behind two adult children. if you want to help with the barrel expenses, go to our website abc7news.com. abc7 news has obtained new video showing the arrest of a man accused of killing a woman last week. they say 45-year-old francisco sanchez admitted to shooting kate stays steinle. he said he wanted to shoot at sea lions, and his gun accidentally discharged. steinle lived in san francisco but was a native of pleasanton. this video shows the moment he was taken into custody by police about an hour after the shooting last wednesday evening. it was filmed along the embarcadero near pier 40 by a bystander. stienle's family has set up a website to raise money for a funeral. we have a link to this on our website abc7news.com.

from 10:00 in the morning to 6:00 tonight. 9:17 the time time, and weather-wise as people head out for the festival or festivities, maybe the game in oakland against the marin. what are people looking at? >> we are going to say partly to mostly cloudy in the city and brighter and milder in oakland. pretty nice weather. although if you are headed to the coast, you are like oh, because we've not only had mist and drizzle, it's been cool as an area of low pressure offshore is really bumping up against the coast >> how long for some of the moisture to be wrung out as it hits the higher hills. it's been a little drip by as a result. here's the area of low pressure. and thing about this it's not going anywhere day after day after day. it may disrupt our low cloud deck or enhance it and finale drifts inland come thursday. this was pretty wet about a half-hour ago. we will see sunshine in santa cruz and more 70s today.

cooler weather margeally cooler for san jose. it's 67 right now, feeling pretty good with the sun. and mild with the overcast on the coast. 21 san francisco and 65 in oakland. mt. tam, you will be feeling the effects of the taller marine layer today. 62 in napa. look at that livermore reading of 71 degrees. so with a little breeze kicking up throughout the afternoon temperatures will be in a more narrow range today. around average. here's sfo. no problems there. partly cloudy skies. mist and drizzle at the coast. more cooling for the week ahead. coolest days look to be wednesday and thursday. and then it looks like we will get into another pattern change come next weekend. here's the visible picture. you see fog in the north bay, the low fog deck into the east bay. but it is breaking up. it's due to the area of low pressure off the coast. sort of disrupting the stable

air mass with low clouds and fog. all in all we will are looking for this to influence us day-to-day. we is will have the afternoon thunderstorms in the sierra nevada and the morning mist and drizzle. temperatures should be pleasant but not as hot as it's been. today average high 83-84. it's been nice there. upper 70s tomorrow and mid-70s come wednesday and thursday. there's the cool down. which the time we get to this point we could even see some eye plated showers around the bay or a thunderstorm as it drifts into the east bay valley come thursday. 81 san jose. santa cruz in the 70s. mid-and upper 70s from san mateo to palo alto. the fog is moving in this san francisco. a cooler day look for 76. san rafael and 80s toward calistoga and napa. and low 70s hayward. castro valley a nice. 79 castro valley and 82

contrast that to the 43 miles per hour wind by the delta. it looks so tranquil in san francisco. but it will be a cooler day in the 60s and we will get a little breezy around the bay today. 67 in san jose. really nice there. as we go through the afternoon today, today will the warmest day. 80s inland. less heat than we've had. we will talk about the cool down, how dramatic it will be coming up. chris. >> thanks, lisa. new this morning firefighters responded to a two alarm structure fire. they were called out to a vacant house at 3:15 this morning. they found the back and the side of the house in flames there was also a lot of debris inside and outside the home and firefighters had to break through the roof to get to some of the flames. fire was quickly put out. the cause remains under investigation. >> developing news in north carroll. this morning inspectors are examining a deck that collapsed at a beach house, injuring more

than 20 people. >> this morning building inspectors in north carolina are examining a deck that collapsed at a beach house, injuring 25 people and sending 14 to the hospital. it was an accident that echoed the recent tragedy in berkeley. officials say a family who was renting the beachfront house posed on the deck for a picture. a 12 by 12 section of the deck gave way, falling 10 feet to the ground. two of the injured are in critical condition. happening now, millions of >> we heard the screams and my husband came running in and called 911. >> a family from virginia on vacation was preparing to take a group photo on the deck when it suddenly gave way beneath their feet. >> everything went down. i believe they had some with several broken bones all the way from that to scratches and cuts. >> two victims airlifted to the

the piece of executive order he put into place to force overtime that's a job killer. this president has been job killing regulations into place through his agencies and through executive orders. i know how to create jobs. >> last week president obama introduced a proposal that would require giving overtime to employees who work more than 40 hours a week. perry is lagging in the policy, and as of today would not qualify for the first debate. the battle over same-sex marriage may not be over, in spite of the supreme court's ruling. church leaders have drawn a line they will not perform such unions while constitutional scholars say it's not illegal for them to refuse, there could be other things to make them change their beliefs. >> as much as the supreme court decision change the the world for same-sex couples, the high court ruling hasn't change the the beliefs of conservative christians who will refuse to

san ramon very nice. in the 80s today. low 80s. we will have a wide variety once again. in fact this morning mist and drizzle at the coast. the marine layer is still with us. it will be for the next several days. it will be persistent and it will provide for a stronger on shore push and gradual cool down day-to-day. it's aiding in our cooling and it's a system offshore. first we want to get to the wind advisory. if you are headed to fairfield, i-830 toward antioch it's very windy here. it may be a little bit hard for driving, and pretty dangerous at times until 11:00 tonight. a wind advisory and southwest winds could gust over 35 miles an hour. this is the other element that will be influencing our weather today, tomorrow and the next several days with an increased marine layer. and if not slower clearing, at least the cooler air transported into the inland valley. this picture has been changing

minute by minute. see the cloud deck. starting out with very mild numbers. in the 60s even at the coast. 68 mountain view. it's been sunny all morning there. san francisco in the low 60s. it's going to be a cooler day here. and marin county, mt. tam, you can see the deck of that marine layer. we will have the breezy winds around the bay. that is where you will feel cooler. and inland it's going to be warm, but certainly cooler than it was yesterday. 64 in novato, 65 by the delta with the gusty winds up to 40 miles an hour. 71 in livermore a look at emeryville this morning. it was clear and now we're looking at partly cloudy skies. so with the mist and drizzle at the coast that's where the temperatures will be cool. it's going to be gray all week long. and then gradual cooling right on through about thursday or friday. could see an isolated shower by that time, as the low brings up some subtropical moisture. then we will get into some warmer weather behind the system. so here's our visible picture.

there's the low cloud deck, the stratus and offshore you can see the other elevation of the clouds. they look whiter and they look brighter, and that is the low that is just sitting there day after day. wind gusts out of the south. the southerly winds will cool off parts of the north bay, by the delta. we talked about that. elsewhere we look for more 70s and 80s bay side and inland. not a bad forecast for most, but it certainly will be part of our weather each day as it drifts slowly to the north. so in the sierra nevada with the low we will see afternoon showers and thunderstorms isolated from lake tahoe all the way down to yosemite. sacramento cooling off into the upper 80s. looking at 74 in los angeles today. mild there, as well. highs around the bay then ranging from the low 60s and the clouds. once again half moon bay 76. 85 concord. a nice bay in san jose at 81. and if you are headed over into

oakland this afternoon more sunshine throughout the day with upper 60s. that west wind though, up to about 17 miles an hour. the accuweather seven-day forecast the 90 out toward brentwood and antioch. otherwise more mid-80s. tomorrow mist and drizzle in the morning and the numbers continue to slide. tuesday, wednesday thursday inland around the bay staying gray at you're coast. and san francisco kind of partly to mostly cloudy all week long. >> if only we could get some rain, that would be great. >> yeah. >> but on the flip side at least these temperatures aren't too hot. it's been kind of rough the past week with some of the 90s out there. >> and the el nino forecast looking stronger and stronger for a soggy perhaps winter. >> more changes to come. thank you. turning to sports now. warriors center festus will throw out the first pitch at the oakland coliseum at the games between the a's and mariners. here's rick quan with the highlights in this morning's sports report. >> good morning. well, not a whole lot of

fashion statement. and on the fourth you know the father of our country, george washington has to come in first in the race against presidents. the game began with a game as michael taylor takes madison bumgarner's first pitch deep to left for a home run. and four pitches later, bryce harper, hitting .344, two-run shot. last year's world series mvp suffered his sixth loss giving up 6 runs in 5 innings. washington's tyler moore provided fireworks, going 3 for 4 with 4 rbi. he drives in two with this double. the giants now dropped five straight. the u.s. has a chance to win their first women's world cup in 16 years today when it takes on defending champ japan in the final. this contest is a rematch of the last world cup final in 2011. in that one japan shocked the americans by beating them in penalty kicks. the u.s. is favored and will be playing in front of a mostly pro-american crowd in vancouver,
