crime? >> reporter: that's right. sanchez didn't recall every detail because he says he doesn't remember every detail of what happened here at pier 14 but during our 45-minute jailhouse interview he revealed how it happened and why he kept returning to the united states after being deported numerous times. >> did you shoot kate steinle, the lady on pier 14? >> yes. >> you did shoot her. >> hmm. >> reporter: the murder suspect tells abc7 news the shooting that took at the i life of 32-year-old kate steinle has wednesday was an accident. he says he was wandering on pier 14 after taking sleeping pills he found in a dumpster. >> where did you get the gun? >> when the -- over there the benches. with my leg and i see that one teacher, and then i see over there something. >> sanchez claims a gun was

wrapped in that t-shirt, and when he picked it up -- >> boom, boom. three times. >> reporter: he claims he kicked the gun into the bay, lit autopsying let, and walked off not knowing he shot someone until he was arrested by police hours later. sanchez reportedly first told police he was shooting at sea lions. sanchez appeared frail and nervous when he talk about returning to the u.s. after being deported back to mexico five times. >> why did you keep coming back to the u.s.? why did you come back to san francisco? >> um, because i'm looking for a job now. roofing. or construction. >> reporter: sanchez said he new san francisco was a sanctuary city where he would not be pursued by immigration officials. >> sorry for that very much.

>> reporter: feel sorry for everybody? including kate steinle's family. >> yeah. >> reporter: in spanish he said the courts should give him the highest punishment so he can tell her parents in court he no longer wants to live. we reached out to the steinle family tonight for reaction. they had no immediate comment about the interview. right now their goal privacying kate's memory. sanchez says he has no attorney. >> steinle's family set up a fundraising page to raise money for the funeral and collect donations to give to charities that were important to her. investigators are looking for answers after a police officer shot and killed a man in downtown mess tenanton. i started at 2 this morning when police responded to a burglar arm at specialty sales classics,

fire crews moved in quickly, attacking the flames on the ground with hoses and from above with helicopters dropping water. the flames burned four a and a half acres on land crowd by the flood control district. the fire never threatened any structures. investigators working on what caused the fire but say there were no reports of anyone using fireworks in the area. to developing in news vacaville where firefighters stopped a wife within a few feet of several homes. the fire broke out near keeting park last night. vectors have not ruled out if fireworks sparked it. 40 money an hour winds fanned the flames. the fire grew quickly to 300 acres but crews report major progress today because the winds have died down. at the height of the fire flames threatened nearly 300 homes. >> too close for comfort. and it didn't take long for it to come over the ridge, and then
