acres. already forcing evacuations overnight. plumes of smoke seen 40 miles away. a lightning bolt strikes a resort, igniting a fire. as the record heat has millions on alert right now. and chain reaction. >> and the big one happens behind them! >> a massive nascar crash in daytona just hours ago. one car flying into the fence at almost 200 miles an hour. a massive cloud of debris injuring fans. the dramatic scenes. how did this driver walk away? and good morning, america. how about that win for the u.s. women? boy, what a game. here are some scenes. a look behind the scenes. all the celebrations with the trophy. the third u.s. women's world cup win. three goals for carli lloyd. she was just spectacular. >> i was watching while making dinner. my little girl said, mommy, they just scored again. i said honey, that's an instant replay.

there's no way they just scored again. then sure enough. then 2-0, 3-0, 4-0. everyone was on twitter. millions and millions of tweets about the game. from celebrities to president obama. look at that map. it shows all of the action on twitter during the game. the explosions of red are goals. four of them in the first 16 minutes. you know who was there for all of the action? jesse palmer in vancouver at the game last night. we're all jealous, jesse. >> amy, you guys should be jealous. it was ahn unbelievable experience. the u.s. team avenging the loss to japan in the final four years ago. they did it with a record-shattering performance. putting the pedal to the metal and not letting up until they hoisted the world cup trophy for a record third time. victory. >> u.s. wins! the u.s. women's national team hoisting their trophy high.

amy? >> jesse, okay. so tell us, what was it like being there? >> reporter: amy, it was simply an unbelievable experience. you would not veryhave known we were in canada. so many fans donning their red, white, and blue. i would estimate a packed house in the stadium. probably at least 98% pro-usa. it was a virtual home game. easily one of the best sporting events i've ever been to in my life. >> you were not the only canadian there, right? >> reporter: i was camouflaged wearing my red, white, and blue cheering on the red, white, and blue, because i'm smart. >> thank you so much. we're going to talk to the big star from team usa, carli lloyd, coming up in a few minutes. >> she has not slept a wink all night long. we turn now to the crisis that has stock markets tumbling. the historic vote in greece that could shake the global economy. people there taking to the streets to celebrate after they

rejected an emergency bailout plan. it is a decision that creates uncertainty and instability. no one is sure what comes next. rebecca jarvis here to break down the impact. >> reporter: hi, george. good morning. the stocks of tumbling. the dow down 100 points. that 401(k) could dip as much as 1% to 2%. it's important to put this in perspective. >> stocks have been trading near all-time highs. that's after last week, when they fell by the most all year. they are still not in terrible territory. the greek people are cheering in the streets. but their banks are running out of money. closed for the last week. you could only withdraw $67 at the atm in greece right now. many are empty. food and medical supplies are all running low and what comes next will have an impact on your retirement savings. >> a lot of people surprised that at small country like greece is having such an effect all around the world. >> reporter: and it is.

all around the world. we saw it overnight. the reason is what could happen in other european countries. italy, spain, portugal. they're all dealing with similar situations to greece. if this catches effect there, then we have a much more significant problem. you could see a significant issue in your 401(k). >> thank you, rebecca. let's turn now to the wildfires burning out west. one raging in idaho has scorched more than 600 acre destroying at least six homes so far. and forcing evacuations. the heat and dry conditions providing the perfect fuel. neal karlinsky is in bayview, idaho, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a scorching, hot, dry weekend wreaking havoc out west. this wildfire here in northern idaho started up sunday afternoon and so far about 150 people have been forced to evacuate. overnight, wildfires igniting and spreading across idaho.

>> so many houses down there. >> reporter: 600 acres burning so far in this small lakefront community. the containment less than 5%, despite the efforts of helicopters, scooping up and unloading water from this lake. >> there's flames down there toward the shore. >> reporter: multiple homes still in danger this morning. overnight, evacuations ordered. dry land, hot temperatures, steady winds contributing to the fire's growth. plumes of smoke seen at least 40 miles away. over the weekend, at least three wildfires believed to have been sparked from fourth of july fireworks set off in the incredibly dry conditions california is enduring. >> because it's fourth of july they might have been trying to have everyone, but that's the wrong place. >> reporter: in sacramento, this blaze set of as homeowners watch in horror. >> somebody did fireworks. >> reporter: those trees igniting from fireworks and destroying two homes. and across the country in

florida, lightning blasting throughout the day, believed to have struck the avanti resort in orlando. cause ugg it to go up in flames. fortunately, no injuries. and mother nature creating her own light show at disney's magic kingdom. the latest numbers coming in. the fire is about 2,000 akers. it is 0% contained right now. they're worried about another hot day out here amy. >> they're on high alert for more fires in the west this morning. the record heat creating dangerous conditions. ginger has much more on that. >> seattle should go for day six today of 90-plus-degree heat. that would be the first time ever in recorded history. that's how hot it's been. it you can see the haze and smoke. this is in british columbia. that's filtered down to the pacific northwest. the fire danger is high. there are heat advisories. so many folks go back into the 90s. the other story, flash flooding. from minneapolis over into far

northwestern wisconsin. you'll see anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of rain with this. we have seen reports. look at those pictures out of missouri. submerged cars. people trying to get through. another reminder, if you have rain like that, don't drive through it. flash flood watches from new mexico up to illinois. we'll watch all of this as heavy rains come the next several days. flash flooding in the middle. hot and very very, very dry out west. >> a whole lot to track. thank you, ginger. we turn to a tragic shooting at a popular tourist site in san francisco. a young woman killed by an illegal immigrant, a repeat felon who had been deported five times. this morning we're hearing from her family and pierre thomas has all of the latest. good morning, pierre. >> p good morning. yes, this is tragic on every level. it raises an awful question. did a gap in our nation's immigration system cost this victim her life? kathryn steinle. only 32 by all accounts a loving wonderful, daughter and

sister is dead this morning and she should not be. authorities say she was killed by this man, francisco sanchez, an illegal immigrant who had been deported five times. and who federal authorities say should never have been on the street. >> we have one victim. gunshot wound to the back. >> reporter: her father, jim, can't believe how a routine walk on this pier on wednesday turned into a nightmare in broad daylight. >> she was really laboring in her breath. i just kept talking to her. >> i'll miss -- introducing her to my baby. and having fun with her. and i'll miss her smile and her laugh. >> reporter: u.s. officials are now pointing a finger at local law enforcement saying they handed over sanchez to san francisco authorities to face a local drug charge after spending time in federal prison for repeatedly sneaking back into the country. the feds claim they asked in writing to be notified when sanchez's local case was completed. local officials say after the drug charges were dropped, they

had no legal basis to hold sanchez. >> we have a city law, ordinance, that makes it clear we don't turn people over to i.c.e. >> communication has to be improved. >> reporter: as for sanchez, he gave our san francisco indication, kgo an exclusionve jailhouse interview. >> you did shoot her? >> i hear a boom, boom, three times. >> did you keep coming back to san francisco because you knew they wouldn't look for you to deport you? >> yes. >> reporter: regardless of what sanchez has to say, this morning, you can only imagine that family's loss. so tragic. george. >> it is heartbreaking. thank you, pierre. donald trump wasting no time responding to that shooting. claiming it's more evidence that the u.s. needs to crack down on border security. those comments have drawn sharp fire for most of his rivals. tom llamas here with that story. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. even candidates that are friends with donald trump won't defend what he said.

about undocumented immigrants. jeb bush, whose wife is mexican, says he's personally offended. donald trump seizing the opportunity to double down on his controversial remarks about undocumented immigrants. >> they're bringing drugs. they're bringing crime. they're rapists. and some, i assume, are good people. >> reporter: claiming the tragic murder of kathryn steinle in san francisco proves his point. lashing out friday at fellow republican marco rubio who called trump's stance offensive and inaccurate. what do you say to the family of kathryn steinle? killed because we can't secure our border. nearly every republican candidate is distancing themselves. many openingly condemning trump's claim. >> is he hurting your family? >> he's going to have to defend those remarks. >> i would never besmirch all the people who come here. >> he's doing it to inflame and incite. he doesn't represent the republican parties or its values. >> reporter: but some are planting themselves on in

trump's side of the border debate. >> i salute donald trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration. >> reporter: and besides the gop field, trump is also at odds with his own pageant winners. the current miss universe called trump's comments hurtful and unfair. trump called her a hypocrite claiming he criticized him yet wants to keep her crown. >> so far, this controversy not hurting his poll numbers. >> reporter: it's not. jeb bush at 19% up from 13%. his best showing in cnn/orc polling since december, trump following at 12%. up from 3%. mike huckabee at 8%. ben carson and rand paul at 7%. we spoke with some of the campaigns last night. many want to move on. they are done commenting on trump. but some believe his number us have more to do with his celebrity than his comments. >> he'll get in those debates. tom llamas, thank you. now to a frightening emergency landing on a crowded california beach caught on camera. a small plane carrying an advertising banner going down

after losing power. flipping over in the sand and injuring a child. reena ninan has the story. >> reporter: it's the harrowing moment caught on tape beachgoers hope to never see let alone experience. >> that's a landing. >> reporter: a single engine plane losing power, crash landing on a crowded california beach saturday injuring a 12-year-old boy who was body boarding with his friends. >> at the last second, he saw it. he almost, like, fell back trying to get out of the way. and i guess it hit his face, his face -- and titus and i were so scared. >> reporter: watch again, as the plane, towing an advertising banner, hits the sand and flips over. that's when the wing strikes nicholas bare in the head. bystanders rushing to help. >> i was holding the back of his head just trying to keep him calm and waiting for feel to show up. >> reporter: just ten minutes before the accident, nicholas

and his friends pose for this photo. his friends show how he tried to protect himself as the plane came crashing down. >> right here is where the tire hit him. >> reporter: this morning, nicholas is recovering in the icu. the 23-year-old pilot walked away uninjured. the faa is investigating the crash. because the doctors had to shave nicholas' head for surgery, his friends plan to do the same. say small way to show support for their friend, amy? let's turn to "gma" weekend co-anchor dan harris who is here with the morning's other top stories. starting with a major move against isis. >> that's right. good morning, everybody. we begin with an attack on isis with deadly consequences. american aircraft carrying out at least 40 air strikes. against isis target necessary syria and iraq. a military spokesman calling it one of the u.s. coalition's most sus tafrn air strikes yet. a million people are expected today at a mass with pope francis in the south american country of ecuador.

you can hear it there, cheering crowds greeting francis wherever he goes. francis is from nearby argentina. so he is well known and well loved in these parts. last night, he made a surprise appearance praying with the people gather outside of the place he's staying. back at home, david sweat is out of the hospital, back behind bars, on suicide watch this morning. a week after he was shot and captured. he was taken to a different prison where he'll spend 23 hours a day in a maximum security cell. we're learning that richard matt, the other escapee who was killed, had shed nearly 50 pounds to fit through a two-foot-wide pipe to break out of the prison. and finally, here a cautionary tale about premature celebration. take a look at the guy on the left. just feet from the finish line at a race this weekend signaling he's number one. another runner passes him and beats him. ouch.

i am abc7 meteorologist mike nicco with the bay area microclimate forecast. starting off with clouds and drizzle through the morning commute. a strong sea breeze is going do keep us cooler than average and we will watch the net of thunderstorms when and thursday and high fire danger they could bring. today, from 64 at half moon bay to 85 in antioch and the clouds and drizzle come back don't and mild again mid-50s to mid-60s. the seven-day forecast show temperatures below average until this we got a lot more coming up this morning. that horrifying nascar crash caught on camera early this morning. how did the driver walk away?

flying the number 3 car goes airborne. >> it goes from 180, 190, to a complete stop. that is unbelievable. >> reporter: catapulting into the catch fence at almost 200 miles per hour. sending debris shooting into the crowd. and tearing the fence to shreds. the car left obliterated. crunched and flipped upside down. the engine flung into the grass. only this shell remaining. >> all crews getting out to that car. >> reporter: rescue teams rushing in. to pull driver, austin dillon, from the wreckage. >> thumbs going up from all the crew members. >> reporter: amazingly, he emerges largely unscathed. suffering only a bruised tailbone and forearm, waving to the crowd as he walks off the track. >> it happened so quick, man, you're just holding on. just praying you get through it and hope to race again. other drivers stunned. >> that scared the hell out of me. that was terrifying to watch. you know a wreck like that has such a high potential for someone to get injured.

>> reporter: others in the crowd, not as wluklucky. several fans were hurt by flying debris. >> oh, god! >> reporter: fan in the stands posting this moment to instagram. four spectators treated on the scene. one transported to the hospital. race organizers say that catch fence worked, keeping the car inside the track like it was supposed to. with five people in the stands injured, nascar officials will be assessing what to do to keep fans safe. >> they're going to have to. no question about that. thank you, ryan. now to a terrifying scene for one family celebrating the fourth. the deck on their rental home came crashing down while taking a family photo. 24 people were injured. two of them critically. this morning, we're learning more about what may have caused the accident. abc's phillip mena in emerald isle, north carolina, with the latest. >> reporter: amy, good morning. these are nails and a joist support and what they're supposed to look like. but experts say the nails used on this deck that collapsed were rusty and weak.

this morning, a family recovering after a fourth of july photo op turned traumatic. >> at this time, roll them, yes, ma'am. i need all the ambulances i can get. >> reporter: 24 people injured, 2 critically, after this deck on this beach front home collapsed saturday night while people were trying to take a group photo. >> i heard screaming. as i'm coming up, people were on the ground. >> reporter: the family members, ages 5 to 94, falling 14 feet to the ground. authorities using a specialized mass casualty bus to transport the injured to the hospital. >> the bottom fell out and collapsed on to the ground below. >> reporter: authorities saying the nearly 30-year-old nails holding the porch together likely gave way to the weight. weakened overtime by expand to moisture and salt water. experts say, deck disasters like this, are usually preventable. this youtube video capturing a 2013 collapse that sent more than two dozen people crashing

developing right now, an intense battle to save homes being threatened by a fast-moving wildfire in idaho. the flames forcing mandatory evacuations overnight. at least six homes have been lost. the smoke, visible 40 miles away. meantime, at least three wildfires in drought-stricken california sparked over the weekend by fireworks. those fires destroyed two homes. look at this massive fire at a popular hotel in orlando, forcing the evacuation of 500 rooms at the avanti resort. the flames destroyed the roof and fourth floor. a lightning strike is to blame. happy to say nobody was hurt. an nfl star is in the hospital this morning after injuring his hands in a fireworks accident. giants defensive lineman jason pierre paul suffered severe burns to his palm and fingertips. raising concerns about his nfl future. he still hasn't signed his contract for next season. a nearly $15 million one-year deal. he was hoping for a better one.

reaction. brings a lot of fluid, swelling redness in that itch. >> the more you scratch it, the more you spread it around. the more it itches. >> my mom said, stop scratching. you're only making it worse. >> right, scratching begets more scratching. >> all right. that's good to know. there can be serious complications. infections can come about. >> exactly. we have to remember that the skin is covered with bacteria. kids will scratch, scratch, scratch, make micro lacerations. or cuts in the skin. the bacteria that's on their fingers, under their nails, can get in there and cause a skin infection called cellulitis. if you have a scratcher, and i had one, she scratched everything. keep them clean and cover them with band aids. it might look ridiculous. but it really is effective. and then i read that occasionally these bites can become life threatening? >> correct. this happens to about 3% of the population. if you're bitten and you notice difficulty breathing, swelling around the face or mouth, hives all over your body, or a sensation of dizziness, that's a

they're not the man-eaters they're often made out to be. june 14th, 16-year-old hunter treschel never saw it coming. >> somebody's been attacked by a shark. his arm is gone. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: june 26th, patrick thornton bitten in waist-deep water. >> i felt a tug at my foot. >> reporter: june 30th, kysen weakley left with this bite on his leg. 11 shark encounters off the carolinas this year. most of them in the past three weeks. i haven't been in the water for three years. i was on vacation in florida, a shark swam about 15, 20 feet away from me. it took all i had not to run out of the water screaming. now, i'm getting back in the water to get up close with sharks. to understand the dangers they do and don't pose to people. with me, paul, a shark conservationist who lost two limbs to a bull shark in 2009. and a dive coach.

>> i don't think they go for a human. they're just -- they're hungry. the thing is behaving similar to their food source. they want to see what it is. how do we see what stuff is? we touch it with our hands. sharks don't have hands. they have very sensitive jaws. >> reporter: sensitive and powerful. the jaws of larger species are twice as powerful as the jaws of a lion. generating 40,000 pounds of per square inch of pressure in a single bite. and with limited vision, sharks can find their prey with their complex sensory system. they feel vibrations in the water and hear from a distance of up to two city blocks. should we fear sharks? >> no no. we should have a very healthy respect for them. they have their place. we have ours. just because some people get bitten by sharks doesn't mean that they're out to get us. >> reporter: we head down. and within seconds, are swarmed by sharks. my first impressions. oh, oh [ bleep ]. oh. i have to thank paul there, the good folks at discovery channel, and my dive coach, charlotte, for taking care of me. we talk about -- and again, guys, i haven't been in the water in three years. because a shark swam next to me on vacation in florida. as we talk about how fearful we are of sharks, they should fear us. 100 million sharks killed annually for shark fins. they end up on our plates. at that rate, they can't replenish themselves naturally in the environment. that has a potential to impact the entire ecosystem. we have to learn to do here, folks, is co-exist. there are only three people killed worldwide. given how many people are in the water, three killed worldwide in a shark encounter last year. none in the u.s. last year. one this year. we have to learn to co-exist. we're going into their home day in and day out unannounced and behaving like food. >> your reaction totally legit? you want to go back? >> i want to go back now. but initially, i said what am i doing? when i got down there. you see that first shark if go
