security to prioritize the deportation of undocumented immigrants who are public safety threats. they want to get tougher on illegal immigration. >> this administration is not enforcing the laws. quite frankly, i don't think they care. this tragedy in san francisco is a product of that lack of caring about respect for the rule of law and enforcing our laws. >> as the immigration battle wages on locally and nationally police are trying to solve the strange and tragic shooting. francisco sanchez is expected in court tomorrow. >> vic lee said investigators don't believe much of what he is saying. >> he joins us live with the story. >> prosecutors from the san francisco d.a.s office are deciding at this very moment how to charge francisco sanchez. he said to abc 7 news in the jailhouse interview and to police investigators the shooting was accidental and that

he took sleeping pills before the shooting. police homicide inspectors turned the case over to the d.a. this afternoon. police made one last visit to pier 14 last night after abc 7 news aired the jailhouse interview with the suspect. investigators zeroed in on benches on the pedestrian pier, looking for evidence that would support his story that he found the gun at a bench. >> where did you get the gun? >> went over there on the bench. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: sanchez claims a gun was wrapped in that t-shirt and it went off when he picked it up. >> boom boom, three times. >> reporter: sources with knowledge of the investigation tell us investigators don't believe his story.

sanchez said after he was arrested thursday near pier 14 that he was shooting at sea lions when the gun discharged. police also don't believe he found the gun at a bench or there were three shots as he said in the jailhouse interview. they only heard one shot as abc 7 news reported friday sanchez admitted he shot kate steinle. he claims he kicked the gun into the bay after the shooting and walked off. there may be security video showing him tossing the murder weapon into the waters. a police source tells us the gun was a semiautomatic handgun. he was in san francisco sheriff's custody in march, but released even though ice, the federal agency that enforces immigration laws had to be notified if he was going to be let out since he was a felon in this country. they believe sanchez should have

been deported. >> he had been deported multiple times beforehand. the answer is self-evident. >> they say sanchez was released because his jail policy requires ice to obtain a court order before an ice agency can release. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> we have store surveillance video showing a teenage suspect trying to get away from police in a stolen car as he was shot. it captured portions of the incident at 11:30. the 15-year-old was driving a stolen honda when he hit the gas and drove directly toward an officer to get away. >> the stolen vehicle struck the officer's patrol vehicle. the officer discharged his well, striking the subject once. >> the officer standing outside his patrol car was injured and being treated. the suspects name and age are not being released. he is in serious condition.

the woman involved in a deadly baseball bat beating over the weekend had problems with each other before. the san jose mercury news reports officers were called to the housing complex in february to break up an argument between the women. brenda walked into police headquarters and confessed to killing her neighbor with a bat. >> i just told my landlady a couple weeks ago, i was nervous about her. i'm scared of her. when she's on your bad side, oh my god. >> according to police martinez admitted she snapped as they were having a conversation in the victim's apartment. she is expected in court tomorrow to be formally charged with murder. the police discovered a man and his wife dead inside their house in a murder suicide. officers received a 911 call. when they arrived at the home,

77-year-old edward and his wife 67-year-old patricia were dead each from a gunshot wound. police are set to give an update in the next half hour or so. we'll have any news information for you on the news at 6:00. a vacation to remember for a family visiting if area from asia. they led officers on a chase from oakland on to the bridge. chp tried to pull over the driver for speeding but she didn't stop. the minivan finally pulled over. officers escorted the van off and gave the driver a ticket. they blame the misunderstanding on a language barrier. erratic winds are hampering firefighters trying to control a fast spreading brush fire in a row mote section of salano county. the fire is 60 acres 20% contained. you can see how close the flames are getting to homes. the residents were ordered to evacuate.

the fire started as a vehicle fire around 10:30 this morning. a half acre vegetation fire burned in castro valley. sky 7 hd was overhead as they put out the flames at the holiday inn on castro boulevard. this shows the firefighters had the fire under control. in the meantime there may be a way to detect wildfires at an early stage using a system of satellites, planes and drones. it was developed by people in uc berkeley. abc 7 news reporter is in the news room to show how it works. >> researchers at the national lab have been working on this for two years. the idea is to detect the fire early, much earlier than firefighters can by using a coordinated satellite system making it much easier to get the fire under control.

imagine a satellite 22000 miles away, able to detect a wildfire in california roughly the size of a sand box. working 24/7, the satellite snapping pictures every few seconds. researchers getting closer by using planes and drones to get details of the perimeter of the fire. >> where things are burning. how much energy is in a certain part of the fire. >> reporter: the drones and flames have regular and infrared cameras. >> we can connect them and have them work together. it's fascinating in this small thing. really, it's credit card thing inside here. it's actually a computer, a single board computer. >> reporter: that data is then stored and accessible to those on the ground. researchers at lawrence berkeley came up with a system that's not put into use. the system is spanish for fire. >> also, it's the -- it means

fire urgency estimator on orbit. >> reporter: the drones would be used at night when fire crews are at a disadvantage. >> we have an estimate of how big the fire is from infrared. we think we can get to a fire significantly before. >> reporter: it would prevent the fires from getting out of control and threatening lives and houses. it could be up and running in five years. in berkeley, abc 7 news. >> promising. a big step for organizers behind a ballot measure that calls for a moratorium on luxury housing construction in san francisco's mission district. supporters turned in their tickets this afternoon before the 4:00 deadline. they are confident they have enough valid signatures to qualify it for november. organizers call the effort historic claiming they were able to collect more than the needed number of signatures in 19 days. the controversy over air b &

you know there are a lot of summer soccer camps in the bay area, but only one where the coach has special ties to what happened in vancouver yesterday. the goal so to speak, is to make sure there's plenty of talent for the team. >> we are warming up. >> reporter: it's no surprise when you coached four members of the women's team that young players are hopeful the coach can do the same with them. >> we need player that is love the game that are passionate about the game. that win yesterday, the way the u.s. played was spectacular. i think that's -- how can that not excite kids this age? >> reporter: this is the elite group of 80 enrolled in the soccer camp held on the campus of the team's academy in sunniville. >> we are working on footwork and shooting. the basics in soccer. >> reporter: do you have any weak spots? >> i'm not very fast.

>> reporter: they are putting in six hours this week to be the best they can be. there's focus on technique, but the coach will instill creativity and cultivate a winning mentality. with a few soccer moms watching in the stands, $375 for tuition. >> the coaches will push them. parents just go out there and support them. as long as they do that, we all get along. if they don't, it's complicated. >> one never knows who among these young women might be on a future team. others played other sports. they switched from ice skating to soccer. >> where do you think this is going to take you? >> hopefully college and beyond. soccer is just awesome to be here. >> reporter: you know it's your sport? >> yeah. >> reporter: in sunnyvail, abc 7 news. >> the women's team will get paid less than the losers of the men's team.

fifa pays them $2 million for winning. $8 million is given to players eliminated in the first round of the men's tournament. in tennis males and females are paid equally. state tax officials are slamming a company for making massive profit and not passing it on to customers. the california franchise audit was spent today. they stripped blue shield of california of their tax exempt status. they found the company did not use the extra money to lower insurance rates or otherwise help its customers. the ceo of social media read it is growing for the demand to resign following the firing of a woman.

190,000 people signed an online petition calling for her to step down. users took large sections online in protest. read it will not say why the woman was fired. starting tomorrow you need extra change for the drink at starbucks. the cost of most beverages goes up five to 20 cents, that's despite a decline in cost of raw coffee. they say the hike will cover the rising cost of wages and rent. they increased prices just last year. some things made for the beach should stay on the beach right? michael finney is here with the details on that in today's consumer headlines. >> first, michael's concerned about pet treats. >> yeah a specialty pet treat. warning for pet owners dozens of products are being recalled over listeria concerns. they are recalling two dozen frozen and freeze-dried dinners made for dogs and cats.

during a routine test listeria was found in the chicken freeze-dried patties for dogs. no illnesses reported. a complete list of the recalled products on the pet food makers website. volvo unveiled an alternative to strapping babies to add-on car seats in the backseat. designers came up with what they call the excellent child seat concept. the idea con figures the front passenger seat for the child to sit there. the safest way for small passengers to ride. other conveniences are a drawer to hold supplies and a heated cup holder to warm a bottle. go-to shoes the flip-flop put you at risk of serious injury. trips and falls or worse flip-flop fails are all over youtube. experts say it's no laughing matter.
