live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> hundreds of bart passengers stranded at four east bay stations this morning after a fire that caused injuries and triggered system wide delays. good morning, i am eric thomas. >> i am kristen sze. service now is restored on bart but only hours after frustration. the investigation is underway as to what sparked the fire. amy hollyfield is at the san leandro station with the latest. amy? >> kristen, bart officials say they know the train was going five miles per hour which they say is normal. they do not know why there was a fire. they admit it must have been

very scary for those on board. the people inside the third car of the bart train were so scared at 4:38 they knocked out the train's window. the car was filling with smoke. >> this was an electrical arcing which looks like a fire a big splash and creates smoke. three people were hurt and taken to the hospital but bart did not specify what they were treated for. >> on the ground, commuters were surprised and confused. service was shut down on the fremont, dublin and richmond line south of the coliseum station. five stations including lake merritt and san leandro were closed. >> i don't want to hear my managers' voice about me being late. this is frustrating. >> bart had to power down the third rail causing the major disruption. they for not know what caused the arcing on the northbound train from fremont to richmond a line that has been underconstruction. >> too soon to say if the construction had anything to do

with this. we have damage to the third rail right now they are repair. >> many stood and stared at the closed doors of the station wondering what was going on and why no one was this to explain. bart riders realized they were all going to have to help each other and let those with no idea where to go tag along on the bus with her. >> we are confused. the station is not helping. trying to make the best of a not so great situation. >> it was every man for himself^. they could not get bus bridges into place during all of this. the normal bus routes absorbed all the extra people. service was restored by 9:00 this morning but some people early in the morning said they were giving up throw in the towel and take the day off. >> thank you. the minute there was an issue with bart commuters jumped into the cars so instant traffic

jams. this was the scene on 580 approaching the maze with traffic backed up for drivers well before the usual slow points and it was worse on 880 where at 8:00 it took three times longer to get from 238 to the maze. bart is running now but there are still delays with bart. leyla gulen what can passengers expect? >> there were constant delays and more on that in a moment but this is what we like to see: green. we got word there are now no delays so a.c. transit had to absorb the passengers. what is it doing to traffic? they took the car instead, and we are left with heavy backups. we do not see this at this hour even the car pool lanes with traffic still stacked and packed coming away from the macarthur maze. if your travels take you through hayward through san leandro

domestic violence. the d.a. just announced he was charged in an incident involving his former fiance as she was holding their two-month-old china at her home back in may. the 30 year old was released after san jose police announced he was being investigated in a possible sex assault in april. mcdonald will be arraigned on the new charges this afternoon. >> happening now, san leandro police are looking for the intruder whose broke into a home early today and shot a man living there. the victim did not go down without a fight. we are outside the san leandro police department. >> yes a shelter-in-place order was listed where this happened early this morning but some of them are on edge because as you said the home invasion suspect are known to be loose. the homeowner who was shot by one of the were it -- suspects is in the hospital he is not the

only one likely shot. two to four men broke into an older couple's home and one suspect shot the suspect and the homeowner shot a suspect. they are investigating who shot first. >> they were in the house, they were stat eled. i am not sure how the suspects got in. we are working on that. it looks like the victim will survive. certainly a rough night for them . >> this is a live report from san leandro. >> happening today loved one remember a 32-year-old woman who was gunned down at san francisco's pier 14. kate steinle was shot on wednesday as she walked with her father. she died from the injuries at san francisco general hospital. there will be a private memorial for kate steinle in pleasanton today. new details are emerging how the

suspect francisco sanchez was held in sheriff's custody and released. we uncovered an official document that shows the sheriff department requested sanchez be returned to san francisco in march on a 20-year-old marijuana charm. the letter asked the federal prison in southern california where sanchez turned time to notify the sheriff department when he was ready for pickup. sheriff mirkarimi said his department was only responding to a request. >> all the contact was initialized by the feds. once that happens, it is our obligation to arrange transportation. >> sanchez was held in san francisco for these weeks and then released. he was arrested on july 1 in the shooting death of kate steinle. >> her family and friends will gather for a private memorial at the ruby hill winery today with a promotion of her legacy and have raised $58,000. if you would hike to help out, head to abc7news.com.

francisco. showers, then, scattered showers and storms in the north bay and inland east bay. this will give us another chance driving through drizzle tomorrow morning and it will be dry and warmer headed through the weekend. we will talk temperatures, quickly, today, low-to-mid 70s through most of the south bay and 73 at san jose. upper 60s to mid-70s on the peninsula, and we will have mid-60s along the coast into downtown san francisco at 64 and south san francisco at 66. as you head through the north bay we will hit low-to-mid 70s and this is the best chance of this area, you guys for having more showers. you have had .1" from bodega and petaluma north. that will start sliding south over the next hour so marin county, get ready, the rain is on the way. berkeley richmond oakland, upper 60s and low 70s. and mid-to-upper 70's in our inland east bay neighborhood. tonight the best chance again, for thunderstorms is to the north like they are today. they will be less in intense difficult than this morning. look at the green, this

signifies a future radar run of where we think the drizzle will be heaviest and we will all have to deal with it. the weak side of the low, we have mountains that help with the lift so we have a best chance for widespread precipitation the form of drizzle or thunderstorms depending where you are today. this is how it plays out: the area of low pressure slides across this evening that could precipitate a burst of heavier drizzle away the bay and the coast and maybe some scattered showers. overnight, it is drizzle. by tomorrow afternoon we will see clearing. we will not be worrying about wet on friday. the seven-day forecast shows we will have morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. temperatures jump two degrees afternoon day. by next week 60s at the coast and 80s and 90s around the bay and inland. summer will come back then. until then we have another 24 hours of wet weather. >> thanks mike. it could be wet today. but the weather looks great if you are outside this weekend.
