ou for joining us. i'm ama daetz in for cheryl jennings. >> and i'm dan ashley. our other top story is unusual weather today. it feels like summer is being interrupted by winter. >> drivers are wading through snowon the pass in the sierra. >> windshield wipers are on as light rain hits the north bay. looking live right now where the weather has been largely overcast the entire day. >> you can see the rain drops on the camera and the gray dreary skies out there. and looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza it is mostly cloudy you can see there. >> in the south bay looking live you can see it is really a very nice day. let's check in with abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel to see what is on right now. >> i am going to show you what is on live doppler 7 hd. wipers are not going on the cars at this moment but we have seen some. live doppler 7 hd tracking most

of the activity in the north bay. getting some very light showers and as we take you to the east bay street level radar, a little bit on the damp side. do watch out for slick roadways. definitely some more moisture heading in our direction. it is moving in from the north. as i show you a computer animation of the future, more showers coming up later on tonight. a live look from what i'm seeing here. oakland hills and some other spots around the region. san francisco has measured 300 along with santa rosa nothing measurable in livermore and san jose. i'll let you know how long you will need to hang on to umbrellas and what is in store for the weekend when i come back in a few minutes. an elderly man is in critical condition after being shot. the victim of a home invasion

robbery. police say 69-year-old robert lewis was injured and tried to shoot back but his shotgun was not loaded. this happened early this morning on lake view drive. the intruders have not been caught. lyanne melendez has more. >> chaos. >> reporter: that is how described the police activity just after midnight after his neighbor was shot during home invasion robbery. police say this was a targeted home but don't know why. police say the owner robert lewis, took out the shotgun and pointed it at the man without realizing it was not loaded. >> he did point the gun at the suspect with an intention to protect himself and his wife, but the shotgun was unloaded. we don't think he knew that. >> reporter: initially lewis told police he had injured one of the intruders. the 69-year-old resident and his wife were inside the house at the time and a relative visiting them. lewis was taken to the hospital

and is expected to survive. this afternoon his wife returned to the home with family members and asked for some privacy but not before investigators swept through the house taking the shotgun and other evidence. was it a registered gun? >> they are looking at that now. that is all part of the investigation. >> reporter: you don't know. >> i don't have that information. >> reporter: the neighbor lived here for more than 40 years and sees crime escalateingescalating. >> they caught a guy the next street over breaking into houses two or three weeks ago. it is getting a little touchy up here. >> reporter: neighbors were asked to stay away while police conducted their investigation. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. two people are under arrest tonight after a raid on a san jose medical marijuana dispensary. police raided the organics dispensary. the business is accused of illegally possessing and selling

marijuana and under investigation for tax, workers compensation and insurance fraud. san jose city councilman has been dropped from a lawsuit accusing him of sexual harassment according to san jose murk euro murkury news. claims he told her to break the law or she would be fired. now to today's bart fire that caused injuries and triggered system wide delays. the problem stranded hundreds of passengers at four stations. it's the latest in a string of break downs plaguing a system in dire need of new tracks and repair. david louie is live in san francisco with more. >> reporter: it was a mess. the interruption to service lasted for about 3 1/2 hours. the cause linked to a northbound

free mont to richmond train losing contact. there were minor injuries which bart blamed on passengers not following emergency evacuation instructions. the three passengers sustained cuts from broken glass and a back injury when they broke out two injuries to escape smoke they saw. the last of the three-car train going north as it left the coliseum station. the train operator ininstructing them to move to the car ahead of them. the track is about 60 feet above ground. >> people would be getting out on to a track way with 1,000 volts of electricity running through the third rail and then the potential to fall off that section of track way. >> reporter: bart thinks the fire was caused by an electric arc when the car lost contact with the third rail. it under scores that bart is showing its age the break down

is a major sore point among passengers. >> there are a lot of problems happening regularly. that is the reality of having a system as old as they are. our cars are from 1972. >> reporter: some of us might drive a car for five or ten years. bart cars are 43 years old and some tracks older. a bart committee is working on plans to submit a bond issue to voters next year to help pay for new tracks and other repairs. >> it's about really understanding what is the track that is most at risk of failing and then making sure that we are investing in replacing that particular track, not the stuff that is old and in good shape. >> reporter: a tear in new track was discovered. david louie, abc 7 news. two san francisco police officers were hit last night by a patrol car left running. it happened in the south of market area. police say an officer got out of

his patrol car and left it in reverse. the vehicle moved backward and hit two officers and a man being questioned by police. the injuries are not serious. the detained man suffered scratches on his back. friends and family gathered to celebrate the life of kate steinle. as abc 7 news reporter explains many loved ones are turning to social media to share memories of a young woman being taken away too soon. >> reporter: to say she was just the girl next door would be an absolute under statement. >> i had the best sister. >> reporter: friends and family say kate steinle will be remembered for bright eyes, big smile and big laugh. >> we went camping and just sat around and started roasting marshmallows and started throwing marshmallows at each other. it was like the most fun.

>> reporter: while kate's life was cut short some believe her memory will live on in the hearts of many. one friend had this to say your amazing smile and positivity will be so greatly missed. you are such a genuine soul that will impact lives well beyond your years, wishing so much that we had more time with you. another person wrote what can you say about a woman who made everyone she was friends with feel genuinely special and regarded her immediate family as such friends. there are no more words. so far campaigns on give forward and go fund me have raised more than $60,000 minus memorial expenses. the money will go towards supporting charitable groups near and dear to kate's heart. family members say that will be part of her legacy. >> she was very loved. she is with us forever. she is in heaven.

if you plan to drive from san francisco to marin county the trip will likely be a headache as doyle drive shuts down for the weekend. katie marzullo is live with what you need to know. >> reporter: the hard closure is at 10:00 but the closing process begins at 8 p.m. if i give you one bit of advice it is if you are driving between san francisco and marin county do not wait until the last minute. we are talking about the massive construction project. it is $1.4 billion. it began in 2009 and it is an upgrade to the approach to the golden gate bridge which was built in 1936. so it wasn't up to earthquake standards any longer. so we got a 79-hour closure. it is going to be a headache but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is in the form

of a tunnel. each direction of traffic in the future will have its own dedicated lanes and own pass through so it should be crystal clear. and the temporary detour there right now will be gone. so that's the good news. in the meantime talking about this closure the advice is avoid the area all together if you can. >> most of us who live and work in this area know the different ways. you can go through san francisco. this weekend all those roads are going to be filled with people. so i can just tell people now any little short cut that you think you have will probably be filled with people. >> reporter: someone asked me about the short cut. it will be open but assume that will be bumper to bumper the chp says. there could be delays as long as four hours. and there is a bit of an unknown element because it is the first time the area has closed on a

blue fin and humpback whales are common to the north bay and are protected. the california science panel is warning that fracking poses unknown risks. fracking is the process of drilling down and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure to fracture rocks and release natural gas. scientists say agencies don't understand what oil companies are doing which is why they warn of unknown effects. scientists also say fracking in california uses highly toxic chemicals that have unknown risks on wild life and crops. bees which have been declining in big numbers are facing a new threat from climate change. a study in the journal of science finds rising temperatures are rapidly shrinking the natural environment of bumble bees in north america and europe. scientists think bumble bees may not have evolved to deal with heat shock. governor brown will head to

the vatican to discuss climate change and modern slaveriry with pope francis. the governor will attend a two-day conference that will focus on the recent letter. brown has been pushing for greater efforts to reduce greenhouse grass emissions and spoke at this week's climate summit in toronto. drugs gun shots and stolen cars. an i-team investigation shows you how people in one neighborhood are scared after squatters moved into a home. a surveillance camera captured a dog from the home attacking another in the neighborhood. >> i was terrified for my life and i assumed my dog was dead. how can i prevent my dog from getting killed? >> police have responded to more than a dozen calls. what it will take to get squatters out tonight at 11:00. and check this out. you're looking at the bay area's first live drone. >> it is over what is left of

candle stick park in san francisco. >> that is where abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us live tonight. >> reporter: drones have been flying over the bay area for years, pilots have been doing it. the faa got involved and came up with very strict guidelines that now allows television news stations to use drones in news coverage. so not only do we have a helicopter now we can get extra close special views, tighter views with a drone. let's give you a view from drone view 7 right now. this flight is being controlled by a company certified by the faa faa. >> glad to be here and nice to see rain and moisture out here. >> reporter: tell me about these rules. they were very strict, weren't they? >> faa is safety first when they were going to integrate and fly

them safely they wanted to work with companies that were going to do it safely and 600 pages and four months later they gave us approval to fly. >> reporter: give me an example of one of the measures they made you follow. >> make sure we have the right pilots. that is probably most porpt thing is to have a pilot who is mario wilson a former air force pilot. he knows his stuff when he puts this thing in the air. >> reporter: so this is an extensive piece of equipment with a camera on it. it is stabilized. it comes back to the place it started out. >> it has a homing device. it has live transmission. >> reporter: when we come back at 6:00 we will show you what it looked like inside what remains of candle stick park today.

showers from the bridge down towards the pence law into red wood city. we are also seeing some light returns and now a few returns starting to show up could be just drizzle in the south bay around the campbell area. take a look at what is happening in the sierra nevada. we have been seeing thunderstorms firing up and along the northern california mountains and as far as the storm reports flash flooding and hail reported. this is going to continue as we head towards friday. if you do have travel plans to go up to tahoe just keep that in mind. scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms for friday. delays of 83 minutes due to weather in case you are picking somebody up. it is great to see rain drops on our bridge camlens. it may slow down your evening commute. low 60s from san francisco to oakland. 61 in half moon bay. in san jose we are seeing peeks

of blue. 63 santa rosa. 69 in livermore. our highs today have been really well below normal for this time of year with 50s to 70s. and another view showing you the rain drops. hang on to the umbrellas. spotty showers overnight tonight. clouds linger tomorrow with sunnier and milder weather setting up for the upcoming weekend. satellite radar showing you the low pressure system moving in. moisture still wrapping around on the back side of this low and that is why we still have more showers and drizzle in the forecast. so we will call it spotty tonight at 7:00. maybe when you are sitting down for dinner. 10:00 p.m. still showers crossing the heart of the bay area. tomorrow morning a shower or drizzle can't be ruled out for the start of the commute. morning starts out mid 50s to the low 60s and with those showers and drizzle around keep in mind that your morning commute could also be impacted

the federal government's office completed damage assessment. sources tell abc news that people likely had personal information stolen. that amount is more than six times what was originally announced a month ago. new kinds of data breaches show how vulnerable social security numbers are to hackers. michael finney is partnering with important advice on how you can protect your social security number. >> reporter: paying taxes, getting a job, accessing government benefits, opening a bank or credit card account going to the doctor buying a

car may require that you reveal your social security number. data security expert says it can be a disaster when that number falls into the wrong hands. >> the social security number is the mother load for an identity thief. this is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. >> reporter: opening credit card accounts in your name or stealing your tax refund. consumer reports says one way to protect yourself don't give out your social security number just because you are asked for it. >> only share with those you choose and who absolutely need it like potential creditors. >> reporter: surprisingly doctors don't need your social security number even though they often ask for it. you can leave that spot on medical forms blank and most health care providers won't question you. >> we don't require patients to fill out the social security number because they give us their insurance card and we can
