good morning, america. breaking overnight, severe storms stretching from nevada to new york. a tornado destroys this school tearing the roof off this pennsylvania classroom. another tossing this barn across a parking lot. flooding and more dangerous weather in the forecast for millions. breaking right now the confederate flag about to come down. a ceremony in the statehouse grounds in south carolina ending a year of fighting over a divisive symbol. and new this morning, a new apology. ariana grande saying she's sorry for what she said about america. >> i just wanted to make a video to apologize again for the whole doughnut fiasco. >> how she's explaining that bad behavior caught on surveillance tape. >> the u.s. wins the 2015 women's world cup. >> it's a morning of champions only here on "gma."

history. we are going to look live right now at the statehouse in columbia south carolina where the confederate flag flying for more than 50 years at that statehouse is about to come down an honor guard will approach the flag poll, bring down the flag for the last time and be moved to a military museum near the capitol there in columbia south carolina this all began at the emanuel ame church in south carolina where nine operationers including the reverend reverend were gunned down by a white supremacist. dylann roof. it set off events. the family members appeared in court to forgive the man who murdered their loved ones. since then we had debates across the country. all across the south. confederate flags coming down.

culminating after 50 years of debate in the statehouse to bring it down. on the grounds right now the crowd is developing and they are chanting "bring it down." it has been such an emotional debate in south carolina and the country. right now the family members of the nine victims are being brought out. they will be joined by the thousands. by the governor and former south carolina governors and the pastor norvell goss. steve osunsami is there. steve? >> reporter: george there are thousands upon thousands of people here. it is swelteringly hot. i can tell you the plan here is to make this ceremony very brief, quick, respectful ceremony. we're being told.

people are cheering now as more state officials step out. the family members that you just made reference to are about a couple hundred feet in front of me on the steps here. they set them apart from the ceremony. and they are all this sort of standing there, in that area right by the color guard. i can tell you that a lot of people here have high emotions about this. many people who wanted to see this bit of history. there are people in the rafters in this building directly behind me watching i don't know if you can see them up there is of course one little factual point that must be said in all of this that many of the fragment's detractors underline, that is this flag was put here in 1961 as the government's response to court-ordered desegregation. george? >> they never said it would come down. you are watching the governor

she signed the bill to bring it down with nine separate pen, one for each of the victims of that shooting in charleston. >> president obama, of course also weigh egg in with that remarkable eulogy in charleston a couple weeks ago where he sang "amazing grace." and, steve, so many have remarked how this debate even though it had been going on to so long in south carolina really did seem to bring so much of the state together. >> reporter: it did. it was something that we saw that was quite unique here. we saw, not only in this state, but people came in from across the country to that ame church to bring flowers, to remember the victims, to pay their respects. there was a feeling here that it was important for americans much all color, to show that this behavior that this act of hate as police have described it, was unacceptable. of course, the accused gunman

accused in this case in the murders is seen in what we believed from police online and in pictures the confederate flag in one hand and a gun in the other. so many people wanted to do something to counter that image, the image of hate that so many people p associated with this flag that police said led to these murders at a bible study at a black church. >> you saw in the debate on wednesday and thursday decendents of jefferson davis. saying now is the time, steve. now is the time for this flag to come down. >> she was quite emotional. looks like now, george the color guard is starting to march out. it's been a long debate. they debated for hours and hours in the middle of the night. >> here comes the color guard right now from the south carolina highway patrol.

they reached the flag they will lower and fold it and it will be given to the kerrater of the confederate relic room in the military museum. the crowd includes the governor and former governors, and members of the legislature, other political leaders in south carolina. steve said in a solemn ceremony a lot of joy in that crowd today. >> reporter: there is, but also there are a lot of people here mourning the loss of this flag. there are a number of people

holding confederate flags in the crowd. some of them even african-american. there is a van driving around the state grounds with two large con fed receipt flags. it has been driving around this area nonstop. so many people also very upset, very frustrated by what is happening here today. >> the honor guard of the south carolina state police.

who was there on the scene as it happened. steve are you there? >> reporter: the honor guard removing the confederate flag. you can hear people cheering now as they walk away with it. they handed it to the curator of the relic museum who will now keep this flag for safe-keeping. >> steve, talk a little more about the scene there this morning. we see that huge crowd. somewhat of a varied it crowd? >> reporter: i didn't hear your last question. i can tell you, there are thousands upon thousands of people here on both sides of the issues i would say that the people wanting to bring down the flag outnumber those who support it but there are people carrying confederate flags in this crowd, and many of those people feel that their heritage is being stepped on. >> steve, i know you've been

covering this debate for a long time as i have as well. it seemed to come up every four years during presidential campaigns, but no matter what happened up until this shooting in charleston the flag persisted. >> reporter: i heard half of that i think you mentioned the shooting in charleston. it had a great deal to do what happened here. it was the wind beneath the wings of lawmakers who were pushing for this. one of the most emotional interviews that i did over the past few days was with a lawmaker who was the decentant of the p confederate general who said this had to happen. this morning, the ended if a decades long flight over the confederate battle fight. the flag coming down the flag pole removed. outside in 100 degree heat. some coming to celebrate, hers to mourn. >> i'm not racist prejudice.

it's a heritage thing. >> reporter: south carolina's governor is celebrating, signing an order to take down the flag after the shooting in what police call are hate crime. >> these nine pens go to each of the nine familyies. >> reporter: the state senator saying this wouldn't have happened without that loss. >> sometimes it takes a horrific depiction for us to really grasp the gravity of the situation. >> reporter: state officials report that lawmakerses getting death threats. jenny horn the if descendent of jefferson davis. confederate president. she pushed to take down the flag. >> i have a great deal of respect for my ancestor honor, my parents. my legacy is what i do while imi'm here. >> now. >> here and now. >> reporter: the white house

pushing to remove any emblem that has the battle flag. the state can now bid for college tournament games and championships, a decade-long boycott against the state is lifting. >> that is the scene in south carolina president obama just put out a tweet. he said south carolina taking down a confederate flag a signal of goodwill and healing and a meaningful step towards a better future. we want to move on to a celebration in new york. a huge ticker-tape parade first time ever for a woman's it team. they won the world cup sunday. they will be downtown today here in new york and faris is there. >> alex morgan getting a kiss. >> reporter: good morning, already you see a massive police

presence building. the floats will arrive behind me all decked out in red, white and blue all before the u.s. soccer team makes history, one more time. the floats are being built and the confetti gathered for team usa's epic ticker tape parade this morning. the u.s. women's soccer team making history once more. while new york has hosted 205 of these parades since 1886 this will be the first women's team ever to get a ride down new york city's famed canyon of heroes. starting in downtown manhattan the team will make their way up broadway ending at new york city's hall where the mayor will address them and their crowd of adoring fans. the parade costing $2 million is expected to draw huge crowds. this capping off a week of celebrations for the u.s. women's soccer team following their world cup win against japan on sunday. >> i believe that we just won. >> reporter: president obama congratulating the team over the phone.

miles from where their car was found wednesday. their dad said they got lost but did everything else right. >> they hung out in one spot. they stayed close together. they didn't try to do anything that you wouldn't want skilled hikers to do. >> reporter: but the trio might still be lost if not for nate souter and kolton cook clearing trails in a remote part of the back country when they saw someone who seemed out of place on a distant ridge. >> it was a tall figure, skinny. had i looked up 30 seconds later she would have been gone. >> reporter: when they later found out about the search they called to give rescuers the exact coordinates. sisters were located 20 minutes later. how does it feel providing that critical piece of the puzzle. >> nice knowing that helping someone out, especially someone in a situation like that. >> reporter: the women ran low on food, were cold and tired but otherwise are fine. >> i was relieved. i started to cry like you would as a parent losing all your kids at once is not an easy thing. >> reporter: their family and the rescue team relieved knowing in wilderness like this, it's

removed from the grounds of the statehouse in south carolina after flying there for more than half a century. it will now be kept in the state's military history museum. however, in virginia, a southern heritage group is now planning on going to federal court to keep the confederate flag on the state license plates. the governor calls these plates divisive and hurtful. he wants to phase them out. damaging storms have been battering millions of americans from nevada to new york. heavy winds, flooding rain and at least two tornadoes. this is the work of one reported twister, a school in pennsylvania destroyed. the roof ripped off. the principal who was inside at the time is okay this morning. in arkansas, powerful winds picked up a barn and tossed it across a parking lot. and neighborhoods in parts of the midwest are underwater. ginger's full forecast coming up shortly. we have a shocking case to tell you about out of massachusetts this morning. teenagers there facing criminal charges for something that has become disturbingly common among

high schoolers, the sending of explicit text messages or sexting. abc's linsey davis has details. >> reporter: this morning, half a dozen students are set to face child pornography charges stemming from a sexting incident at their massachusetts high school. police say in march the six suspects all between 15 and 17 years old allegedly circulated a photo of an underage female student. one of the students then allegedly blackmailing the victim sending her text messages threatening to release the photos unless she had sex with him in a school classroom. one text reading "how many people would enjoy seeing it." another "i got way more of these pics. can i put them online?" authorities opened an investigation seizing several cell phones and six school computers after the victim's mother, who does not want to reveal her identity to protect her daughter, spoke out. >> they would expose her to everybody in school. she -- we've just lived the last five months in fear. >> reporter: those teens are now

switched around but i thought it was kind of a really great metaphor. i've been calling it a little bit of a reversing passing of the torch because what carli did in that game was epic, and she single-handedly won us that game in, what, i think 16 minutes or 20 minutes or something. but it felt amazing. she gave me that arm band, and i don't know if many people saw it but after the game ended, i actually ended up giving it to my captain, christie, and for me that was just very evident of what it takes to win a world cup, everybody kind of passing off the torch, passing off the fame, that's what it takes to win one of these. >> your teamwork was so impressive, so inspiring but, carli, i got to say, i think you stunned the entire world except yourself with those three goals in the first 16 minutes. best player of the tournament. has it all sunk in? >> i don't think so. i'm on kind of cloud nine right now but i'm taking it all in and it's been fantastic. i mean, the journey throughout the whole tournament from start to finish, everybody contributed. and we knew that it was going to take 23 players.

good morning. i'm kristen sze. we have a little rain out there. let's talk to mike about it. >> scattered in nature. look at the shower right around san mateo bridge. the eastern side of the bay bridge going into oakland and right around hercules towards highway 4 from concorde. we're going to be dealing with showers through 2:00 and we'll see some clearing late today and much warmer temperatures next week. looks like most folks are heading over the bridge through the east bay. as we look at the mcarthur maize, a 45-minute drive towards the bay bridge. that's because the golden gate bridge is off limits because you can't get to doyle drive. you can use the bridge if you want to connect through but folks are heeding the warning and traffic is light. let's take a look at 360 now.
