live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. much smoother than expected is how drivers in san francisco are describing the morning commute near the golden gate bridge on the first morning of the doyle drive closure. good morning, i am kristen sze. >> i am eric thomas here for cheryl jennings. we still have to get through the weekend. doyle drive will be shut down for a total of 9 hours so drivers to and from the north bay may have to choose between backups or finding an alternate. amy hollyfield is near doyle drive. amy? >> the bay area is getting good at road closures. anywhere else this would cause a huge backup. here, people have adapted.

the construction crews have not stopped moving. they have a lot to do in 79 hours. traffic though, was expected to come to a standstill. it also, kept moving to the delight of friday morning commuters. >> the traffic was great. really good. it was like saturday. just no traffic at all. >> the shutdown of doyle drive has been publicized with people being encouraged to work from home and avoid the area. some say they change their timing but decided to take a risk and drive through. it paid off. >> just planned on leaving later figured everyone would leave early and it worked out. >> there was in traffic. i don't know where everyone went today. >> protect folks say the light traffic was a great surprise and they expected a huge backup. something else they were not expecting: the weather. >> rain in july, who would think? that was a surprise. it didn't slow down the construction. with the exception of striping by the golden gate bridge but

you cannot do striping in the rain. >> they can make it out now the weather is clearing. when the new drive drive opens you will see chains including three tunnels rather than one and a safer thoroughfare rather were that the current approach. >> the big activities progress as planned. it is looking good. there is a lot of work out here. there is still a lot of work to be done and we will give updates through the weekend. >> she said they have torn up the detour that took less than ten hours. they have to build the new thoroughfare, a lot to do and they will not stop. they will work around the clock and hope to re-open for monday morning commute. >> many drivers avoided the golden gate bridge but that ended up having a spillover affect on other major commute routes. the traffic reporter is here with a closure look. leyla? we are taking a closer look here the macarthur maze shows the heavy traffic as it pours in from the east bay along the east

read license plates. it is designed to reduce crime. it is also stirring up controversy. abc7 reporter melanie woodrow is at the police department. >> the idea is the surveillace cameras and license plate readers will scan and store your license plate information if your vehicle crosses magazines one of these six cameras. some do not like that and think it is an invasion of privacy because the police department will have a log of where you are in the city. the chief said it is about stopping and solving crimes. fremont boulevard and i-8980 is one of ten locations that the fremont police department want to install video next. the fremont police chief said the locations are key entry and exit points to the city. he said that the fixed cameras will not be continuously monitored. >> it is an investigative tool. when we have a christmas we will go back to it as a source of information. >> the $300,000 project was
