progressing on schedule. let's begin with spokes woman molly. >> this morning the traffic was light. we don't want people to think that is going to be the norm. we are experiencing heavier delays and over the weekend we expect major delays. >> delays just more than an hour ago with doyle drive closed you are looking at one lane approaches to the golden gate bridge from east and west. this not even a worst case scenario. many commuters stayed home this morning and others took alternate forms of transportation. the district reports 1,000 more people than usual took the ferries which means as many will try to make their way home tonight all from the final phase of a $1.1 billion project to rebuild a crucial artery before

sound wall and into a house killing one person and injuring another. sky 7 hd was over the scene of the accident. you can see the white truck is practically oblit rated by the impact. police say they are not sure what caused the truck to leave the road. a teenager has died after an officer shot him early this morning in a rural area north of boulder creek. >> sheriff's deputies say the teenager killed a kitten and was armed at the time. >> david louie has the story live from santa cruz county. >> reporter: investigators from the sheriff's department still don't know what triggered the violence why a 17 year old and a kitten all happening about 10:30 last night. they hoped to bring in a negotiator but suddenly the teenager turned a rifle on the deputies. when deputies arrived at the scene they found the teenager's grandparents standing in the drive way.

the 70-year-old grandfather told deputies his grand son had beaten him with the club. >> he said the grand son was still in the house acting violently and he warned our deputies that there were guns inside the house. >> reporter: the 17 year old's name had not been released. he lived at the house with the grandparents. a dead kitten was lying outside killed by the teenager. and sheriff said the teen stood his ground and at various times held a club and a rifle pointing it at the deputies when the deputies shot the teen four times. >> our deputies immediately administered first aid and called fire and ambulance to the home. five minutes later fire and ambulance arrived and took over life saving efforts. >> the grand son was taken to a regional trauma center where he died during emergency surgery. sheriff said he did not know whether the teen's rifle was

loaded or not and said the call to 911 is not being released. two years ago deputies responded and the grand son was detained for a mental health evaluation. in santa cruz county, david louie, abc 7 news. san francisco sheriff answered questions as he quote, set the record straight following the shooting death of a woman on pier 14. >> he focused on how his office handle the case of francisco sanchez. sanchez admitted to shooting and killing kate steinle. the sheriff's department took sanchez into custody. >> the d.a. decided not to prosecute sanchez so the sheriff released him. >> ice failed to obtain and provide a warrant or judicial order for such deportation proceedings. >> abc 7 news has obtained a letter from the department

information of close to 22 million people. the confederate flag flying on the south carolina capitol grounds is gone. first the flag was removed and then a crane came along and took that pole away. mary bruce has new details on the murder weapon used in the hate crime that led to the flag's removal. >> reporter: a stunning heartbreaking admission from the fbi director about last month's massacre in a south carolina church. the accused killer dylan roof should not have been able to buy a gun. the national background check system failed. roof who is charmgged with killing nine people at a bible study previously admitted to drug possession during an arrest, a revelation that should have prevented him from buying a weapon but that information failed to surface during the fbi background check. >> the fbi is continuing to investigate exactly what happened when it came to the

the fda has changed warning labels on a popular type of pain reliever advil, motrin and relieve are all affected by this. the health risks associated with the drugs. >> reporter: an porptimportant new warning about a popular pain reliever used for things like back and headaches. these nsaid drugs can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke by up to 50%. >> this is a significant change from the food and drug administration because it is saying that a drug that many people didn't think twice about taking they are saying think twice. >> reporter: the warning labels changing dropping the word may

noting the drug does increase the risk. researchers finding it begins with the very first dose, the more you take and longer you take it the higher the risk will be. doctors say it should not be a serious concern for everyone. >> for people who are occasionally taking one of these drugs for pain or for fever there really isn't a lot to worry about here. but for people who have underlying heart disease taking these drugs every day you need to think about this and look at what your options are. >> reporter: dr. richard besser warns switching to a different kind of pain reliever isn't necessarily the way to go because they all have potential side effects. scores of of south bay families hope to get free back to school supplies this summer. abc 7 news was at sacred heart community service as hundreds lined up to register for backpacks stuffed with supplies. the most in demand items were

backpacks themselves. organizers expect to serve 3,000 needy students this year. >> programs really help parents who want the best for their kids and want them to start the year off on the right foot but maybe just need that extra help to meet their bills and make sure their kids are ready to go. >> sacred heart will take donations until the end of july. the supplies will be handed out in august. you can donate online or drop items off in person. gas prices are rising a little now but maybe by a lot soon. prices spiked after a new report found declining fuel in california. statewide average price up from just $3.43 a gallon yesterday but significantly down from $4.12 a year ago. >> something we have to gut our way through. we don't think it has long-term impact. a lot has to do with the exxon mobil refinery.

still isn't up. >> the bay area average right now it is $3.55 a gallon. experts say prices could soar over the next week. next time you go to a state beach you won't be able to wash off sand or salt water. starting wednesday all california state parks will shut off outdoor rinse stations. beaches include montera, half moon bay. park officials suggest beach goers use a towel to brush off sand or bring water from home. a beach closed by the massive oil spill will soon reopen. the beach will be back open to the public on july 17 nearly two full months after a pipeline ruptured in may spilling more than 100,000 gallons of oil. preliminary information suggests

pleaded guilty to avoid a lengthy trial. >> having second trial which would have been emotionally devastating hanging over their head for all this time. there is relief that the legal process is over. >> reporter: following the first trial the shooter received three consecutive life sentences. they were seeking revenge of the shooting of a fellow gang member and a third brother was not injured identified ramos as the shooter. the reason it took so long to get reyes sentenced is because he was a fugitive. he was arrested in north carolina. today in court the wife and mother of the victims became very emotional after reading a statement before the judge. >> i think what she said summed it up whether ten years 100 years, 1,000 years justice won't be served in this lifetime for the loss of tony, michael and

immigrants. wild life experts are warning people to be more vigilant and keep an eye on children and pets after recent coyote attacks. they are worried about the coyotes recent aggressiveness. there have been four attacks involving young children since may including one in irvine last sunday. >> a small child approximately 2 years old was in the garage. the coyote came in and got the child on the neck area and part of the cheek. >> wild life officials say trappers have euthanized five so far. we are hearing from a firefighter who survived a terrifying fall. he fell right there into the flames below. he was in critical condition and has been hospital sizedicized since

their father. >> losing all your kids at once is not easy cht. >> reporter: their dad says they got lost while hiking and ran low on food after ten days in the wilderness. all three chose not to elaborate when asked what went wrong and how they survived. >> it was really you just got to get through each day. >> reporter: they are being praised for helping save them while clearing trails in a remote area they noticed someone out of place in the distance. >> tall figure skinny. had i looked up 30 seconds later she would have been gone. >> reporter: the sisters were located in minutes overwhelmed by the abundance of volunteers dedicated to finding them. >> the helicopter, i realize there was no way people were going to give up. >> reporter: search and rescue teams say the sisters were prepared with the right equipment and clothing and a water filter and stayed put

until emergency crews found them. abc news los angeles. this afternoon hollywood is mourning the death of legendary actor omar sharif. sharif gained world wide fame with his role in "lawrence of arabia." he is probably best known for his performance in "dr. schivago." he was 83 years old. the municipal water actor tom celek was accused of stealing was apparently bought legally. the district had accused the star of illegally taking water from public fire hydrants and having it trucked to his ranch. the director of public works says that construction company paid to use the water.

abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: one of ten locations the police department wants to install video surveillance cameras. the police chief says the locations chosen are key entry and exit points to the city. he says fixed cameras will not be continuously monitored. >> it's an investigative tool. when we have a crime we go back to it as a source of information to try to identify the offender. >> reporter: the project was approved thursday night at city hall. not everybody likes the idea of police knowing, recording and storing where they go. >> there is already a lot of stuff on the internet about tracking locations through phones. just another way to track you. >> reporter: abc 7 asked the police chief about privacy concerns. >> very cognizant of privacy issues you have raised. that priority is reflected in where we have chosen to place the cameras and in the retention life of the information and who will have access to it and how

handing out the new minion toy with happy meals. mcdonald's denies the toy uses foul language and insists it is gibberish. target is hoping to tap into a new technology trend here in san francisco. we were first to show you a preview of target's new open house designed as sort of a lab for new smart home gadgets. it just opened today. target is hoping the new show room might give it an edge over amazon which sells most of the products online. facebook is looking to take over the world, the music world. the company is in discussions with major record labels to get licensing deals to place music videos on user's feeds. the talks appear to be in the early stage but videos could begin rolling out in a test phase. the goal is to challenge youtube's dominance in online

14. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz in for cheryl jennings. >> and i'm dan ashley. sheriff tried to set the record straight. he did some finger pointing while defending his office. abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us live at pier 14. quite a spectacle. >> reporter: the defense for his actions is that he is simply following city policy but reiterated his opposition to ice detainers. he said that they were illegal and that he cited two federal court decisions saying that they violated the fourth amendment. embattled sheriff spoke to reporters about his refusal to honor ice's request to hand over illegal immigrant francisco sanchez who is accused of murdering kate steinle.
