we start with the hunt for one of the world's most notorious and dangerous drug lords. >> yeah, joaquin el chapo guzman was last seen saturday night inside a maximum security prison 55 miles from mexico city. somehow, he escaped tlau long tunnel that led out inside a building in a nearby neighborhood. >> there are indications that that tunnel was being built for at least a year. this morning, the all-out manhunt for el chapo guzman. after escaping a maximum security prison again. >> this is a huge failure. he's one of the most powerful drug cartel leaders in mexico, if not the most powerful. >> reporter: guzman slipping through a small hole in his cell into a tunnel complete are ventilation, lights and a motorcycle on rails. apparently used to help dig him out. escaping to freedom through a converted tunnel nearly a mile long that connects to this house. >> he's been notorious for his use of tunnels. the sinaloa cartel has a team of engineers and miners that has built over 100 tunnels between

the u.s. and mexico. >> reporter: guzman spent 13 years on the run after a previous prison escape. mexican authorities paraded him in handcuffs. after finally recapturing him just last year. he was the head of the mexican drug cartel behind one-quarter of all of the drugs sold in the u.s. his criminal empire blamed for tens of thousands of deaths from overdose and drug gang murders. >> el chapo guzman is like the osama bin laden of drug trafficking. >> reporter: and he's banked a fortune, estimated at more than $1 billion. this morning, 18 prison employees have been taken in for questioning. the escape, a major embarrassment for the mexican government. republican candidate donald trump is blaming mexican authorities for el chapo's escape. a statement from trump last night said the case is another example of mexico taking advantage of the u.s. >> trump is refusing calls from

his party to tone down his rhetoric on immigration. after thousands of supporters turned out in phoenix for trump's largest rally to date. he told "the washington post" that the immigration issue cannot be toned down. he's getting criticism from a lot of places. one place he's not getting it, fellow candidate carly fiorina. >> i think donald trump taps into an anger that i hear every day. people are angry that a common sense thing like securing the border or ending sanctuary cities is considered extreme. it's not extreme. it's common sense. we need to secure the border. >> the biggest audience to hear from trump could come next month in the first republican presidential debate. when asked by "the washington post" if he was looking forward to that debate he shrugged saying, whatever. there's a deal to save greece from financial collapse. the tense talks had continued hours past the deadline. banks in greece have been closed for two weeks. atm cash withdrawals had been limited.

greek voters must now approve the new deal. they rejected a similar one a week ago. news of the tentative deal has stock futures in the u.s. up across the board. also overseas, an announcement is expected on an historic nuclear deal with iran. that deal, nearly ten years in the making would still have to get approval from lawmakers here at home. abc's bazi kanani has been watching these developments overnight from washington. >> reporter: the negotiations over iran's nuclear program have been on and off again for nearly a decade. but today, diplomats say there will finally be a deal. secretary of state john kerry expressed optimism on sunday on his way to mass in vienna austria, where this round of talks has dragged on for more than two weeks, past three deadlines. >> i think we're getting to some real decisions. so i would say even as we have a few tough things to do, i remain hopeful. >> reporter: the deal is expected to include

unprecedented inspection of iran's nuclear facilities for at least a decade. a reduction of iran's existing supply of nuclear fuel and limits on its ability to enrich uranium. in return, iran would get relief from billions of dollars of crippling economic sanctions. earlier this week, iran's foreign minister on balcony with documents, reiterated his plan to help his country move forward. >> do you think you'll get a deal in the end? >> why would i be here if i didn't think that? >> reporter: diplomats say some final sticking points remain including disagreement over a u.n. arms embargo over iran. iranians are getting ready to celebrate a deal. in washington, they're skeptical. >> it appears the approach was to reach whatever agreement the iranians are willing to enter into. >> reporter: congress would have 60 days to review a final agreement. the deal needs approval by

officials in iran and the fiver over countries at the talks. reena? t.j.? >> the world will be watching. bazi kanani, thank you so much. pope francis returns home today after a historic visit to latin america. in paraguay he once a called for a new global economy, one that uplifts the poor. that message was well received by three of the poorest countries in south america. the pope visits the u.s. in september. days after the confederate flag came down at the south carolina capitol, thousands are showing their support for the symbol. cars and motorcycles adorned with the battle flag rode through florida in a peaceful rally. saying the flag represents heritage, not hate. but some fired at a black neighborhood nearby. there was an event celebrating the life of a confederate general. much of the midwest is still getting hammered by a violent line of storms. flooding rain, hail, damaging winds. a lightning strike is being

blamed for sparking this fire that engulfed an indiana church. a tornado damaged nearly two dozen homes near indianapolis. five inches of rain fell near louisville. left cars and homes underwater. they're bracing for more of the same today from the dakotas to the south. molly cochran with the forecast for us now. >> thank you, t.j. and reena. now for monday, two things are happening across the north central. first up is the heat. omaha, kansas city under heat advisories. well throughout monday afternoon. also the threat for severe storms. chicago, springfield, louisville, and nashville, all under the threat zone. damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding the main impacts. call ahead if you have flight plans. also turning stormy across sections of the northeast. t.j. and reena, back to you. >> thank you, molly. crews in southern california have been battling several small wildfires. here's a bird's eye view. as a chopper drops water on a fire in new hall.

to thousands of people. now for a look at morning road conditions. wet and windy from the tennessee river valley into georgia. slick at times in the mid-atlantic. hail and high winds for commuters. showers could make a slippery ride in seattle and the rockies. >> and if you're flying stormy weather may lead to airport delays in chicago and detroit. authorities are trying to determine what caused an explosion at a rhode island beach over the weekend. >> this blast came without warning, tossing a 60-year-old woman into the air and slamming her down into the rocks. the beach was evacuated. the woman was rushed to the hospital, treated for multiple injuries. she returned home last night. >> the last thing i remember was reading my book. and we watched a gentleman get ready to go scuba diving. he was putting on his gear. that's the last thing i remember. >> it was like a human cannon. just -- four feet up, ten feet out, smacked on her torso. it was very dramatic.

she was unconscious for three minutes. >> the beach reopened on sunday. the authorities have ruled out an explosive device. some beach goers said they smelled gas after the explosion. no line, though, under that beach. the family of maszing kentucky mother of five is pleading for held inspect her disappearance. chris call rogers was last seen july 3rd by her live-in boyfriend. her car found abandoned. her cell phone, keys, and diaper bag inside. the boyfriend has been cooperative. and denies knowing anything about her disappearance. three people injured after two flights arriving at washington's dulles airport encountered severe turbulence. the first fight from puerto rico was affected 20 minutes before landing. one passenger and two flight attendants were hurt. a few minutes later, a second flight from san francisco was rocked by turbulence as well. no injuries reported from that incident though. police in south florida say two men were arrested for using a backhoe to steal an atm.

they say the men stole the backhoe and used it to smash the structure housing the atm and then put it in the bed of their truck. shortly after, the police stopped a suspicious-looking truck. the atm was never opened. boston red sox fan, she's recovering after a scary incident at fenway park. she was hit in the head by a foul ball. her wound requiring more than 30 stitches. she was sitting in the same area as another woman who was struck by a broken bat last month. some say protective netting should be extended in that area. the red sox are working with major league baseball to study fan safety. turning to professional golf. it's gearing up for a third major of the season. the british open begins third at st andrews in scotland. >> britain is where the morning sports highlights start. here's our guy at espn. hi i'm kevin connors. it was a sparkling two weeks

at the all england club for roger federer. in the end, it was novak djokovic, winning the championship. men's championship. the djoker won his third title, ninth major overall. he beat federer in four sets. after losing the second set in a lengthy tiebreaker djokovic rebounded to win the final two sets breaking federer in the final game to win the championship. meantime, a dramatic end to the first half of the baseball season. sunday night baseball. the pittsburgh pirates scored three runs in the tenth inning off trevor rosenthal. capped off by a gregory polanco rbi single. the pirates win 6-5. they've won 13 of 16 overall. they're just 2 1/2 games back of the cardinals in the n.l. central. kirk nieuwenhuis entered the game
