president obama expected to defend the historic nuclear deal with iran later today at a news conference. >> but republicans in congress are blasting that new deal vowing they will derail it. abc's bazi kanani joining us now from washington with more on that opposition. good morning to you, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. good morning, reena. it has taken years of diplomacy to get iran to the negotiating table and many months more to work out this deal, but the fight is not over yet. on the streets of iran, celebrations, the crowds hopeful for a better future after negotiators emerged victorious announcing they had finally struck a historic nuclear deal with iran. the basic outline of the deal, iran will voluntarily cut back most of its nuclear activities for the next decade and submit to constant international inspections. in return, the u.s. and its allies will lift the sanctions crippling iran's economy. but it's not a done deal unless

it's approved by congress where the republican majority is already unified in opposition. >> it may be the worst diplomatic agreement in the history of the united states. >> reporter: critics say the deal would only delay iran's nuclear ambitions and would give the country more money to fund terrorist operations. but president obama says legislation to block the deal would be irresponsible and vows to veto it. >> no deal means a greater chance of more war in the middle east. >> reporter: the president and the u.s.' chief negotiator, secretary of state john kerry, now pushing to convince the american public and a skeptical congress to sign on. >> so what's the alternative? the alternative is to, what, go to war immediately, bomb them, sanction them further? well, wait, no, you can't sanction them further. >> reporter: the most recent poll found a majority of americans in favor of working out a deal with iran. now there are some democrats who are opposed to parts of the agreement, but analysts don't

expect there will be enough of them to help republicans overrule a veto. reena, t.j. >> and important detail there, bazi, thank you so much live in washington. in our other major story this morning, the stormy weather forging a path across nearly two dozen state. >> the latest radar showing us the severe weather moving toward the carolinas and georgia where heavy rain, damaging wind and a possible tornado likely. so far, the state of kentucky, though, has been one of the hardest hit with at least two people killed by surging floodwaters. in rural johnson county, 4 inches of rain fell in just an hour destroying dozens of homes, washing out roads and scattering debris just all over the place. the search for six people still missing will resume at daybreak. presidential politics and donald trump topping the latest poll of republican candidates. trump got 17% of voter support in a "usa today" poll followed by jeb bush at 14%. they were the only two candidates to get double digits. but when it comes down to beating hillary clinton, the poll found trump fared the worst among the seven leading gop

candidates. deliberations begin this morning in the mass murder trial stemming from the colorado movie theater massacre. in closing arguments prosecutors insisted that james holmes was sane and deliberately planned that shooting that left 12 people dead and injured 70. but the defense said holmes was controlled by schizophrenia and could not tell right from wrong. the jury has to consider thousands of pieces of evidence and testimony from 250 witnesses. turning now to the hunt for mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman seen here in his prison cell before his bold escape. and we're getting a look inside the tunnel that went from el chapo's prison shower to a house a mile away. there's a ladder a motorcycle and a generator, and it's custom built to his height, 5'6". the mexican government acknowledging el chapo had inside help on a grand scale. so far three top prison officials have been fired. a massachusetts man turned in by his police officer father has been ordered to remain in

jail on terrorism-related charges. in court prosecutors played a portion of an fbi interview in which alexander ciccolo expresses support for isis and calls those beheaded by the terror group criminals and the lowest of low. they say ciccolo planned to set off a pressure cooker bomb in a university cafeteria at lunchtime in order to kill as many people as possible. a disturbing videotape has now been released showing an unarmed man shot dead by police near los angeles. this was two years ago. on this video the man who was drunk at the time refuses a police order to stand still with his hands up. he was shot eight times. the city of gardena later paid his family $4.7 million to settle a lawsuit. the federal judge who order the tape released says the public had a right to see the incident which led to that large payout. newly released dash cam showing a police officer getting deliberately run over. a silver sedan and the passenger got out and ran off.

as the officer moves to go after the passenger, the driver ran him over sending him sliding over the hood of the car. the officer managed to fire three shots. he and the driver both suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. a regional airline is being punished by the faa because of a recent incident in which one of its crews had an encounter with an aircraft. the southwest crew was operating when this occurred. it lost 12,000 feet of altitude so the faa says skywest flights now must fly at a lower altitude and maintain minimum speeds. skywest says no stall took place. well, a big sigh of relief for nasa getting confirmation last night that its mission to pluto is a huge success. after hours of silence, the new horizon spacecraft phoned home letting the space agency know that it had come within 8,000 miles of the distant planet. the nearly ten-year shgs 3 billion mile journey making

headphones for just under 80 bucks. on twitter overnight some called it a letdown and joke. walmart is also putting thousands of products on sale. the finance division of honda paying $25 million to settle claims it charged minorities higher interest rates. those minority customers paid an average of $150 to $250 more during the terms of their loan according to the justice department. an investigation revealed honda dealers could raise interest rates at their own discretion and get more money from honda by doing so. blue bell says it's about ready to start making ice cream again. the struggling company stopped production and recalled its products in april after the ice cream was linked to listeria illnesses and at least three deaths. now blue bell has received a big investment from a prominent texas businessman. no date yet for when it will return to shelf. turn now to a sign of the digital times. a new study indicating how popular playing with tablets is

they were celebrating a birthday. seven others were hurt. several people spoke out at the berkeley city council meeting in favor of tougher building regulations. the city council did decide to call for inspeses on balconies every three years. an attorney for the family of a victim was an advocate calling for change. >> there could be other buildings with the same design and the same issue out there and problem. why do i say that? because we know the same contractors have had similar issues with other buildings that were built at the same time in other locations. >> here is a look at balcony that fell last month. the city plans to hire certified professionals to do the inspections. the city has not said how much it will cost or how many ball cozy are considered "unsafe," in the city.
