live from the kgo-tv broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> cars are burning on a california freeway with drivers forced to abandon them. >> tonight an out of control wildfire is still burning in the dry southern california countryside as firefighters slowly get a handle on it. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama dates. the fire started near his -- hisperia northeast of los angeles. it destroyed 20 vehicles and five homes. >> matt gutman has the story. >> it sparked an inferno on the highway. >> you can feel the heat. >> trucks bursting into flames and at least a dozen cars torched. it jumped the 15 freeway 75 miles east of los angeles. authorities bracing for injuries including burns. >> i do have approximately two to three structures involved.

reports of people trapped. >> the fire consuming at least 3500 acres. the column of smoke miles high. so thick it cast a massive shadow. the fire grinding traffic to a stop. this shows motorists running to safety and some past burning vehicles. >> we are trying to get out. they lost their cars. >> i grabbed my kids and ran up the hill. everyone was screaming. >> helicopters dropping water on the cars. jets laying down red lines of flame retardant hoping to stop the prague gretion. progress. firefighters are blaming a drone like this one for slowing their response time. this is the third time this has happened in the past four weeks. abc news, los angeles.

tonight for the first time we heard the 9-1-1 calls from dublin that lead to the man accused in a kidnapping vallejo police called a hoax. new details came to light on "20 slr 20". "20/20". they reported the connection between that home crime in dublin. >> subject in black had a laser and was fighting with a subject. possible head injury. subject ran through the door. >> subject left his cell phone upstairs. we have his cell phone. >> it was muller's cell phone that helped agents track down and arrest him in orange veil. vallejo police are standing by their investigation and refuse to apologize to huins -- huskins and her family. dozens of friends spent the evening paying tribute to a friend and former teammate in san jose.

the 19-year-old was killed by an officer during a break in and scuffle at a classic car garage in pleasanton. sergio is live at piedmont hills high school with more. sergio? >> reporter: at this high school there were several dozen parents and friends who spent time out here on the football field and some wearing number 50 which was his jersey number. this is the latest event to be put together since his parents hired celebrity attorney mark garagos to push for answers in an officer involved shooting they say did not have happen. candles to honor a fellow student and a scrimmage for a former player on this field and balloons to pay tribute to a young man now gone. this evening trends came together for john demming, junior. >> his character was peace loving and gentle. it was a violent death. >> this is cell phone video of

demming singing the blues. he graduated a year ago and was focused on making music. his parents now want answers. >> i want to know why we were told everyone had a body cam and the next thing we hear is he didn't -- the officer did not have a body cam. >> demming's mother said she was threatened at her own home when police served a search warrant after the shooting. >> i was afraid. it is not over you go to -- not often you go to the gate and have a gunpointed at you. >> it was a break in at a classic car garage that turned into a fight with an officer and ended with demm nie g getting shot in the stomach and face. they said the 19-year-old seemed unusually strong and didn't respond to taser tests. toxicology results have not been released and the department declined to comment further because the district attorney is investigating. abc7 news. in palo alto police are looking for two men.

an attack happened wednesday night in a parking garage in downtown palo alto. the men stuck a screwdriver into the 18 or 19-year-old victim's leg and was not seriously hurt. they called it a hate crime. a new report from the dmv tonight says nearly 400,000 undocumented workers are licensed drivers in california. the state passed a law six months ago allowing them to legally get a license. katie is in the newsroom with more on the story. katie? >> dan, that's nearly 400,000 out of about 800,000 driver's licenses. meaning half of all licenses issued in the last six months went to undocumented workers. for the most -- for most people the numbers are not surprising. >> it is not too crowded on this friday afternoon. >> we were able to get back to more normal numbers and more normal wait times. >> in january when the undocumented workers were allowed to get a driver's license under assembly bill 60

the line stretched outside and around the building in san jose. >> the dmv estimated over the next three years we would have 1.4 million applicants apply for a license. we were not sure if they would come in on the first day or if that would spread out over three years. >> the initial surge of 400,000 licenses does not surprise sara silvia taylor. >> there are so many people on the road who are driving and showing their interest learning the rules of the road that they want to be a part of a safer society. they want to learn. >> she says the law increases public safety and one dmv customer agrees. >> it is better somebody is driving without a license and an accident happens. you don't know who is driving and you don't know where they live. >> another customer says the law is fine by her as well as long as all drivers are held to the same standard. >> they should know english. most signs are in english. they are not in a different

language. it is hard for people to look at the signs and know the rules. >> the licenses given to undocumented immigrants have federal restrictions and have no other benefits other than legal driving. abc7 news. >> the search for two suspects connected to a marijuana grow in san jose has been called off. the santa clara county sheriff tweeted out this picture of the plant seized from alan rock park worth about $16 million. they arrested one person in the raid. sky 7hd was there. the park was shutdown during the search. it will re-open in the morning. the medical marijuana industry is catering to the four-legged family member. a treat made from hemp is curing their animals from a variety of alements. alan wang went to a pet shop in berk looy where the dog treat is selling off the shelf. >> he says his dog suffered from anxiety so he tried these

nasa today unveiled more discoveries about pluto from the data that has begun trickling back after the historic fly by. >> jonathon bloom has some of the highlights. >> i am a little bias, but i think the solar system saved the best for last. >> scientists who have waited their whole careers of a glimpse from the far away dwarf planet had no idea how complex it would be. >> i am still having to remind myself to take deep breaths. the landscape is astoundingly amazing. >> built at nasa ames, jeff moore has been picking apart these new images. >> we discovered a vast craterless plain that has a strange story to tell. >> the planes stand in stark contrast to the mountains found earlier this week. >> creating the same sorts of

the fog is not solid from the exploratorium camera. warm innd la through the weekend and -- warm inland through the weekend and a shower possibility not just sunday, but money -- monday as well. we are dry for the first half of the weekend. the second half of the weekend is very interesting. tropical storm dolores continues to weaken. an area of high pressure will pull some of the moisture up in the form of high clouds initially. and then we may actually start to see the possibility of some showers around here. sunday morning you can see the cloud cover on the increase. the humidity comes up and you will start to notice it especially if you have outdoor plans. isolated showers are possible on sunday afternoon. mainly over the higher terrain, and then sunday evening as well. it continues as we head into monday morning and afternoon. it is another round that is possible. right now if we do get any showers, it pretty much is a best chance that it will be in the south bay and the east

bay. can't rule it out elsewhere. keep that in mind. here is how it will feel to you on sunday. look at the dew points. if they are between 60 and 69 that's humid for us. right now from half moon bay to san carlos and mountain strew and san jose you will be in the 60s. that's what you will need to consider. if you are dwoing to the aidswalk in san francisco it will feel a little bit on the muggy side. but it will be quite comfortable in terms of temperatures. low to mid60s in the morning if you are taking part and then in the afternoon sunny breaks with the upper 60s in san francisco. it should be quite nice for the aidswalk. 50s and 60s to start off tomorrow morning. if you are jogging and walking no matter what you have planned high clouds and sun. 81 santa clara and 80 for milpitas. 86 los gatos. today we got up into the mid-nineties. 80 degrees on the peninsula and 81 loss altos and the fog

a rock star put his show on hold when he saw a woman being hit in the crowd. it happened at a three doors down concert in colorado. he stopped the show and yelled
