good morning. i'm carol lichb tieyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 19th. let's start with a quick look at the weather. >> very active day still continuing from yesterday from southern california right now off the coast, santa barbara, live doppler 7 hd showing all the lightning strike as they continue to push up from the south. monterey is where the active is and it continues to push into carmel valley. so we could get a piece of this in terms of the moisture. shoontd be that active, but we're look at more cloud cover and more humidity. so right now temperatures are very mild in the mid-60s and we'll look for more clouds in the south bay, partly sunny in the north bay and temperatures on the warm side, we're talking

80s and 90s, full details in just a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news this morning, san jose police have arrested the man called a person of interest in the murders of five people in this modesto. early this morning, police spotted this man's car, a 2000 red lincoln navigator, on lucern. moments later, officers took the man into custody. the person of interest is identified as 30-year-old martin martinez of modesto. officials have not said yet why they targeted him. yesterday afternoon officers were called for a security check at a home on knob hill court. when they arrived, they found five bodies inside, two adults, three children. police have not released the victims' identities, their ages, whether they're related or how long they have been dead. the search is on for a

shooter in the east bay. two men were shot near keller beach park in the point richmond neighborhood. officers used dogs and walked along the shore line looking for evidence. we're told they picked up some shell casings. both are expected to be okay. the family of the woman shot and killed at pier 14 will be traveling to washington, d.c. to push for change. kate steinle's parents and her brother will testify in front of the senate judiciary committee on tuesday. they hope to address sanctuary laws and what they believe needs to be done to prevent future tragedies from happening. they will also meet with elected officials on both sides of the aisle throughout the week. francisco sanchez, a five time deportee, has pleaded not guilty, but has said he did fire the shots that killed her.

bell would have played for the spartans at a wide receiver in the fall, a dream now shattered after friday's arrest. >> police officers got a call, possible altercation that was occurring. >> reporter: university police could not share further details except that they arrested him for suspicion of domestic battery. bell has since bailed out of jail. soon after the arrest, the head football coach announced bell was no longer with the team. justin holmes is a second year wide receiver for the spartans. >> he's my football coach, he believes that either you're in or you're in our way. so if you're going to be a problem, you won't be a part of it. >> reporter: san jose state stands by its zero tolerance policy. a policy many students applaud. >> something that the whole team should learn pretty quickly that domestic battery and violence against women and stuff like that is just not an okay thing to do. >> maybe this will be an eye opener for him. >> reporter: bell is the nephew of snoop dogg whose son got

recruited to ucla this year. for now the criminal investigation continues. if found guilty, the school could take further disciplinary actions. in san jose, janet o, abc 7 news. the irish consulate in san francisco will hold a commemorative vigil for the victims of that berkeley balcony collapse. it was on june 16th that an apartment balcony gave way killing six people, injuring seven others. all the victims were students from ireland. city inspectors say dry rot caused the tragedy. six of the seven survivors are still in the hospital. the vigil will be held at 8:30 tonight at martin luther king junior civic center park. two women convicted of abusing their three children are heading to prison. christina dianda received the

maximum of life for torture and child abuse. her partner sentenced to 11 years. prosecutors say the women's children, two boys and a girl, were found last year living in squalor with little food. and a woman is wanted for stealing items from cars. police say this woman is a suspect in multiple thefts from are cars in the burlingame hills area. all the thefts happened yesterday morning. this morning a brush fire near interstate 15 is almost halfway contained. yesterday thunderstorms helped firefighters keep the north fire in the cajon pass area from growing. it's now 45% contained. 700 structures are threatened by the flames. three homes have been destroyed. one person was hurt. all lanes of the highway reopened yesterday, that's where

dozens of cars, trucks, even boats burned on friday. >> we're trying to get out all these people their cars. >> some people who abandoned their cars to evacuate had to pay up to $1100 in towing fees. people using drones delayed firefighting efforts at cajon pass for nearly half an hour friday. a spokeswoman for cal fire says the drones are becoming a problem at fires all over california. firefighting planes will not fly if there are drones in the area. u.s. forest service says five a of the unmanned aircraft were over the interstate friday. officers found the operators and forced them to stop flying. >> they pose such a significant hazard both to the aircraft and the crew that is on board along with the firefighters that are on the ground. >> and officials are saying there are no way to know how many structures or vehicles were lost because of the delay.

congressman paul cook wants to punish drone operators for flying over fires on federal land. about 20 miles away from the freeway fire, hundreds of people have been evacuated from a campground. a wildfire spread to 200 acres, it's now 35% contained. for now, no homes are threatened. tomorrow the san rafael city council will pick up a plan to replace or upgrade the area fire stations. according to our media partner, it's called the essential facilities strategic plan and contains seven public safety projects expected to cost up to $72 million. residents have agreed to pay for the plan by voting to increase the city sales tax for 20 years. and the goal is to modernize san

welcome back everyone. 6:13 on this sunday morning. thank you for waking up so early to join us for the abc 7 sunday morning news.sis a live look. pretty. a chance of a shower today. lisa will have the accuweather forecast. the bay hear has become a hot spot for whale watching. on the july 4th weekend, who were 100 whales were counted in just one hour. and boat tours this month are selling out. and boat tours are selling out. sergio has the awesome images and an explanation from scientists. >> reporter: up close and

personal, that's the kind of experience a lot of bay area whale watchers have been enjoying. every weekend, the oceanic society arranges cruises and some summer tourists have been getting a special treat. >> it's like a firework of blow holes. >> reporter: this season an unusually high concentration of whales as converged just on which the coast between the golden gate bridge and the islands. scientists say there is a simple reason why they're here in such big numbers. >> the whales eat small shrimps called krill and animal plant and this area produces lots of them this time of year. >> reporter: what scientists haven't figured out is why there is so much to feed on this year. lots of anchovies and other small fish are also bringing whales close to the coast. >> we work up at the lookout point, so we get to see them out the window all the time. about once a week lately we've had people saying, oh, look, there are whales out there.

>> reporter: there are so many whales near san francisco bay that federal authorities have issued warnings to ship captains to slow down as they're traveling to the shipping channels coming into the golden gate. the channels cut right next to where whales are feeding. sergio quinn tan, abc 7. a man walking his dog in gilroy took this picture during a close encounter with a mountain lion last thursday. it happened near tee tree way. the man says the mountain lion jumped down from a tree, stood about 5 feet away and briefly followed as he slowly walked away. two other mountain lion sightings were reported in gilroy earlier in the week. there are new concerns over a pricey cup of coffee made from cat poop. it's sold at five coffee shops around the bay area.

it's called the rarest most luxurious coffee in the world. they charge $15 a cup. it's said to lower cholesterol and fight diabetes. the cat eats the flesh of coffee beans. >> something about the body when it goes through it, it makes it special. i don't know how. but it basically poops it out. so it's fine. >> well, now they mostly come from farms where they're caged to control production. animal rights groups say captivity takes a serious toll on those cats. >> do they ever get out of the cages? >> no. they're in there all the time. >> you're friends. >> yes. >> well, eva says they get their coffee from free range in the philippines.

police officers have a dangerous job, so do the highly trained dogs that help them solve crimes. jonathan bloom has a look at new technology keeping police k-9s safe in the east bay. >> reporter: every day the k-9 handlers at the alameda county sheriff's office practice these rare but dangerous scenarios. the pretend suspect wears a bite suit and the dog -- >> custom fitted to each dog. >> reporter: at $1200 each, the cover your k-9 program raises money for them with a dog wash he have july. they can stop a bullet or knife but that's just the beginning. >> and they also have a strobe light so that the dog can be seen via infrared. >> reporter: the light can be bright green or invisible except to infrared cameras. and the vest has a place to mount it on the back. >> that way during the search,

hit south land yesterday continues today. power went out to more than 10,000 customers yesterday afternoon and the threat of lightning strikes forced authorities to close 70 miles of los angeles county beaches as well as the popular santa monica pier. lightning from the storm hit two planes causing long delays at southern california airports. an alaska airlines flight heading from l.a. to washington, d.c. had to turn back yesterday afternoon because of lightning. and a southwest flight from oakland to orange county landed safely after being struck by lightning. dramatic flood video out of arizona. water washed away roads and flowed right next to homes. several mobile homes were simply washed away. several other houses are threatened. the flooding came from the same storm system that hit southern california yesterday.

and lisa you were saying we may be getting a little of that. >> a piece of it. we have clouds and feeling the humidity. but no rain and that will change because pretty likely somebody will see a shower today right here in the bay area. live doppler 7 hd you can see the sweep, looks like same old same old, but we'll take you down to southern california, there is a flash flood watch. showers are moving up to the north. now a remnant low, you about the rain is moving p through the big sur coast.awfully close to monterey and showers are in the forecast today anywhere in the bay area. through 10:00 you'll notice the clouds. feel the humidity out there. it's already pretty much in the 60s everywhere right now. and the best chance of rain will be in the south bay, east bay

everyone will feel the humidity and everyone will have a few clouds around. looet amount of cloud cover will be in the north bay. here is a look at how pretty it is with the sun that has come up about 20 minutes ago. looking at 62 san francisco, 63 in oakland 66 in mountain view, 67 half moon bay. and with a light wind, looks for temperatures to be well into the 70s at the coast. cloudy mount tam. numbers from the upper fix santa rosa, 62 napa. 66 concord. southwest wind only at 10 miles per hour. so it will be warm. more 90s compared to yesterday. that's due to the cloud cover higher relative humidity and dew points. so that's how we measure how comfortable you are. and we url run in the 50s around the bay. and that's why we have the bragging rights. well, today coming up into the

60s. so 50 to 59 is pleasant. feeling humid in the 60s. and 70s is oppressive. so looking at san jose with partly cloudy conditions this morning pretty much for everyone. more muggy today than we've had in the past and we'll look for humid conditions to continue into tomorrow with the possibility of a spotty shower. so all the activity has been in southern california. now moving up through the central coast and a piece of it will perhaps move into the bay area and widespread showers for the northern and southern sierra today. so take a look at tahoe, upper 70s with the cloud cover. yosemite 90, and los angeles still dealing with the rain. so a lot of moisture up there. we need a triggering mechanism and there is an area of low pressure that could provide a little bit of a lift to allow for the showers or thunderstorms. overall for the aids walk it will be dry and a little humid. 67 9:00. mid-70s 1:00 and still quite

warm by 3:00. so highs ranging from the 70s, how about 78 in the city, to the mid-90s inland. 90 mountain view. accuweather 7 day forecast, we're muggy, humid, an isolated shower today tomorrow. looking for temperatures trending downward after the system moves out. middle of the week we're kind of average. in fact below average. and then warmer by next weekend. so the aids walk is today at golden gate park. on site registration begins at 9:00 and the walk starts at 10:30. so no sweat shirt or jacket required. >> and i hope no showers for them. >> it looks pretty good. up next gone with the wind like you've never seen it.

monterey. not a great week end to be camping. if you hear thunder head indoors. here is a look at watsonville. much of the bay area will have the cloud cover, it will feel humid and everyone could see a chance of a shower right on through tomorrow. the details on the active weather coming up. >> lisa, thank you. this morning national guard recruiters in five states are arming themselves in response to last week's deadly shooting in tennessee. the family of the alleged shooter mohammad youssuf abdulazeez has apologized for his actions saying he has suffered from depression for years. five service members died when be abdulazeez alledgedly opened fire on two military installations. law enforcement agencies tell abc news his motivation remains unknown.

well, yet another strange turn in the case of bill cosby. the "new york times" has found a complete text of that deposition he gave back in 2005 when he was being sued by a woman claiming he molested her. this new document provides a much more detailed and disturbing picture. elizabeth herr has the latest. >> reporter: in a ten-year-old deposition, the "new york times" says bill cosby admits under oath that he was a serial adulterer who tried it hard to keep it from his wife. cosby testified in a lawsuit filed against him by a young woman named andrea who accused him of drugging and molesting her. cosby ended up settling the lawsuit. a source close to cosby had previously told abc news the old reason mr. cosby settled was because it would have been embarrassing in those days to put all those women on the stand and his family had no clue.

that would have been very hurtful. in his testimony, the "times" says the comedian discusses romancing and seducing women. he reportedly describes sexual encounters with multiple women, but the "times" says his manner was largely one of casual indifference. the paper says he admits to giving some of them quaaludes but denies it was without their knowledge. more than two dozen women have since accused him of sexual assault, some alleging he drugged them. the "times" reports in his testimony cosby now 78 never admitted to a crime, he has never been charged with one. the cosby camp has repeatedly denied the numerous accusations against him. cosby recently spoke exclusively to abc's linsey davis. >> i have been in this business 52 years and i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. we have new video to show you about a mural in san

francisco's mission district that illustrates gay life. police have released this surveillance video of someone setting it on fire. the arson suspect douses the wall with liquid and then sets it on fire, this happened last month, it was the third time the mural was vandalized. the suspect is described as male, 6-feet, 190 pounds wearing a black sweat shirt and pants. if you know who that is, please contact san francisco police. remarks by gop presidential candidate donald trump about illegal immigrants is sparking a rally today. organizers say trump's statements are insulting that undocumented immigrants from mexico are rapists who bring crime to the u.s. they say those comments will not go unanswered. the rally begins at 1:00 at the 15th street b.a.r.t. station followed by a march to city hall. trump has ignited a new

firestorm by questioning whether john mccain is a war hero. take a listen. >> he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured, okay? >> well, yesterday trump said he was only reacting to an insult by mccain a few weeks ago. mccain referred to a large group of trump supporters at a phoenix event as crazies. trump also says he raised a million dollars for mccain's presidential bid but did not like him much after he lost. secretary of state john kerry fresh off of crafting the iran nuclear agreement will be a guest on "this week." he's expected to discuss the process of bringing tehran to sign a paper severely restricting its nuclear program. on abc 7 at 8:00 this morning. >> nbc 7 was in richmond yesterday as city officials consult the ribbon on the new santa fe union park, at south 2nd street and main avenue. for years there was trash and crime on that corner. and now as you can see there are kids playing, basketball and soccer games going on. it's a safe new clean place to gather. >> and this is a neighborhood with a lot of families and young children that now will be able to come here play enjoy themselves. and it will really sort of revitalize the neighborhood in a way that was very needed. >> that's fantastic. the nonprofit group four richmond neighborhood council and local businesses worked for a year to make that beautiful park a reality. still ahead on the abc 7 sunday morning news, some

more mosquitos have tested positive for west nile violence. officials say they were found in two traps near aspy road and citrus drive. west nile has been found in 31 counties in the state so far this year. the virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitos. there are no medications or vaccines to treat the virus which causes symptoms such as fever, headache and nausea. officials encourage people to wear insect repellant when outside. our producer says a lot of neglect theed swimming pools are breeding grounds. >> all those swimming pools may

6:44 on this sunday morning. hoping you're having a chance to sit back relax, have that cup of coffee while you listen to the abc 7 sunday morning news. this is a live look from our east bay hills camera. going to be a hot one today in the east bay. about 80 degrees in oakland 92 in concord. lisa will tell you what is happening in your neck of the woods. a break true by bay area researchers could provide a powerful new tool as california continues to battle the drought. as cheryl jennings reports, it's giving experts an unprecedented view of clouds. ♪ >> reporter: millions of californians worry about how long our drought may last. some important clues are literally floating above us.

the trouble is we haven't been able to decode them yet. >> despite decades of research, there's still a lot we don't know. >> reporter: to help unravel the mysteries, researchers have invented a new way of looking at clouds. they started by placing two cameras slightly apart along the coast of south florida. they would produce an offset view of the sky that you can duplicate indicate yourself. >> if i close one eye and then the other eye, you will see that. >> reporter: but take the moving targets and blend them together and you get a stunning 3d image of clouds. >> big turbulent mess of heat, water and energy here. >> reporter: and with all that churning, the berkeley team was then able to write a visual recognition software that traps the shape of clouds as they change. the results are incredibly precise models of cloud behavior

from lightning to turbulence to perhaps the most important, rain. >> the process of making rain is about cloud dynamics, how air moves within clouds. and that's what we measure. >> reporter: and while the notion may seem a bit fanciful, they believe it will help develop long term models that are far more precise, helping us plan for the forces that have such a profound effect on our lives. cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. the team has set up a second monitoring station in oklahoma and the data gathered there and in florida is processed using you powerful computers located at the lawrence berkeley lab. a lot of clouds maybe today? >> yes, more cloud cover in the south bay and tons of lightning strikes. numerous lightning strikes monterey big sur. so certainly dangerous

conditions out on the water. and south of the bay area. live doppler 7 hd it looks like the same old same old here, but if you look outside, we have a little bit more cloud cover in some neighborhoods and it is muggy already. it will get increasingly uncomfortable today and tomorrow. here is a look at the flood watch from southern california and look at all the lightning strikes off the southern california coast. now up through monterey and dangerous conditions on the outer way. so big sur. if you hear thunder, go indoors. we have a lot of camping sites here and the moisture will continue to stream up into our area. here is a closer look from watsonville highway 101. and this moisture whether or not the it reaches the ground is a big question today, but we should see some showers and maybe a thunderstorm. here is a look at the cloud cover where temperatures are pretty mild. 65 in san jose, 63 morgan hill, half moon bay 57. it will be warm on the coast

today. very light south winds. and look at this, with the cloud cover from mount tam, just blowing out there. 65 southwest very light this morning. 66 concord and livermore, anywhere from a degree to p degrees warmer than we were yesterday. so we talk about the dew points and this is how our skin feels and how comfortable it is with the air temperature with the moisture in the air. so normally around the bay we have 50 55 dew point temperatures. and that's where we are now. but we're likely to go up into the 60s today feeling humid or muggy and 70 degree dew points or above is where it gets down right hot and oppressive. so we'll look for the numbers today to reflect a warmer today. partly cloudy this morning. and we'll look for the humid conditions with the possibility of a spotty shower maybe a thunderstorm, this will last through tomorrow.
