live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry biel. >> and i'm katie marzullo. modesto police say the man accused of killing five people is also suspected of killing one of those victims' 2-year-old son last year. police arrested martin martinez in san jose early sunday. >> they believe on saturday he killed his mother his ex-girlfriend, their 6-month-old daughter, plus 6-year-old elizabeth dr. cruz had from her former husband and a 5-year-old relative as well. >> police said the bodies were found in the modesto home two days after a neuropathologist confirmed the homicide of cruz's

2-year-old boy seen here on the left who died in october of last year. >> we're also looking to make sure that all of those victims find justice, whether that be mr. martinez being responsible, or ruling out that anybody else could be possibly responsible for that. >> martinez has not been charged in either crime. authorities are still working to transfer him from santa clara county to stanislaus county. >> live team coverage of the modesto killings now. >> let's go live in modesto with new details about the victims. >> reporter: we learned quite a bit of new information in this news conference this afternoon. some of that new information is that police were first called here saturday afternoon because friends of dr. amanda cruz called them out of concern, because she had missed a lunch date. and when they arrived here at her home they found her and four others inside, dead. now, many of the candles and

flowers placed outside of this home are people who first met amanda cruz because she was their physician. but over time they became friends. jennifer french tells us dr. cruz helped her through the last 11 years when her 11-year-old son was born with cerebral palsy. one of the things we learned at the news conference this afternoon is -- >> i was very sad and upset. i went to her and she said, jennifer, if i can deal with my son dying, you can deal with your depression. >> reporter: according to an obituary in the local paper, 2-year-old christopher ripley died last year. the story does not describe how he died. during today's police news conference they said detectives had been investigating his death as a possible homicide and child protective services were monitoring the safety of the

other children. now, we also learned in this news conference that police had wanted to talk with martin martinez as early as thursday. but did not actually get out to try to find him until they noticed that all the people inside the home here were dead, and then they started searching for him in san jose. we'll have continuing coverage coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00 and 6:00. abc 7 news. >> sergio, thank you. sad and complicated case here. martin martinez has family in san jose where he was arrested. they're also dealing with losses from the murders. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee continues our coverage live from san jose. >> reporter: in fact the family members are just holding an impromptu press briefing for reporters who have been staked out here in front of martinez's uncle's home. and i'll attend that as soon as i do my live shot here. but i spoke with a couple of the family members earlier today

and they tell me that they are grieving not only for their own personal loss, but for the families of the other victims. after martin martinez was identified as a person of interest modesto police tipped off san jose police that he might be driving his red lincoln navigator to his uncle's home in east san jose. after modesto police made their grisly discovery san jose police found the car saturday parked at the house. they staked out the lincoln but received another tip that martinez had already left with another family member in another car. that turned out to be his father. they went here to the westfield oak ridge mall to see a movie. martinez's uncle ernie does not want his last name used. he said his brother, martinez's dad, had a rough couple of years. he told abc 7 news if his nephew is guilty, he never told his father about the murders.

kate steinle's parents will be addressing the city's sanctuary laws. the steinle family will meet with elected officials throughout the week. sanchez has pleaded not guilty to kate's murder but said he did fire the shot that killed her. chris will be in washington, d.c. for the steinle family's testimony and will have reports tomorrow live from our nation's capital. drivers in the tri-valley endured a nightmare commute this morning after broken construction equipment blocked lanes near presidentthe 580 junction. construction crews had to keep one lane closed into the afternoon. creating huge backups on 680 from dublin to san ramon, and all the way back to tracy for most of the day. a worker was rescued after being trapped underneath a collapsed roof. sky 7 hd was over the scene this morning.

rescue crews tell abc 7 news the man was wedged between the roof of the garage he was working on. firefighters were able to lift the roof enough for the worker to crawl out on his own. nervous moments today in the east bay as firefighters worked to contain a pair of brush fires that were threatening homes. sky 7 hd was overhead near happy valley road in pleasanton around 11:00 this morning. cal fire contained both fires just before noon. no structures were damaged. >> obviously the hot weather is a factor for any fires that get started. the bay area starting to cool down a little bit, though. >> a good day to enjoy the waterfront. here's the weather update. spencer? >> yes, it is cooling down. good news more good news, i should say. humidity is going to be dropping as well. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. warm in the inland areas.

we've had mid-90s today. but we have mainly sunny skies right now a little fog near the coast and near coastal breeze. thunderstorms breaking off down in the sierra, and north of clear lake. in fact flash flood watches in effect for much of the sierra until 10:00 tonight. that watch extends into southern california. back to the bay area, though the overnight hours so warm and humid. morning lows were only in the upper 60s to low 70s in some spots, most spots in fact. concord 73. 71 in fairfield. those are morning lows. that will start to change tonight. here's a live view looking at a little bit of fog to creep out over the bay. 85 san jose. 90 morgan hill. as we look at fog moving in, through the golden gate from mount tam notice it's still hot inland. mid-90s at santa rosa.

85 at napa. that inland heat will start to taper off tomorrow and the humidity will drop all over the bay area. we'll get back to a more seasonal pattern as i'll explain in a few moments. >> fog is welcomed relief. you can see how hot it will get where you live with an app for your smartphone. mounds of mud remain from a summer storm that drenched southern california over the weekend. here's a look at the mess that was left behind in moreno valley east of los angeles. all the rain shut down the busy interstate there. brandy has the latest from l.a. >> reporter: a deluge of water drenching southern california. >> the street is flooding. >> reporter: powerful floodwaters took out this entire bridge on interstate 10. emergency crews pulling this driver to safety just in time. abc's matt gutman is at the scene. >> he fell right through the bridge, as it collapsed, all of that water knocking out the

underpinnings of this bridge. >> reporter: that major interstate connecting los angeles to phoenix now closed in both directions. >> they're going to be out there evaluating all these other bridges. hopefully this type of situation doesn't happen again in the future. >> reporter: l.a. is experiencing the wettest july on record. getting 36 times the normal amount of rainfall for an entire month, in just one day. >> not every city can handle the amount of water that came down all at once. >> reporter: many neighborhoods now flooded, and damaged. >> it was just a huge amount of rain. and probably five ten minutes. >> reporter: you can see the water here pouring into a shopping mall. an angels game rained out for the first time in 20 years. lightning seen throughout the west, also likely sparking this apartment fire. these storms have helped dampen several wildfires. all of that rain a welcome sight during a drought. but too much at once leads to flooding. and this region is on edge with the threat of more downpours.

a teenager is recovering this afternoon after surviving a 300-foot fall off a cliff in san francisco. here's video of that 18-year-old coming off of a rescue boat and getting placed on a stretcher. crews found him at the bottom of a cliff at land's end shortly after 2:00 this morning. the san francisco fire department said the teenager was walking with a friend by a trail called dead man's point when he suddenly fell. >> there are no lights. this is not a good place to hike. a lot of narrow roads. it's easily if you're not familiar with these trails, to fall off the cliff.

stay away. do not come out here at night. >> a teenager was taken to san francisco general hospital. rescuers say he's pretty banged up but expected to recover. a man who fled from oakland police officers yesterday died after getting stuck between two buildings. look at the space that the man somehow was able to wedge himself into. police used a ruler to show how tight it is. only 12 inches. the man took off running from his vehicle on 65th avenue. he was found half an hour later stuck between the buildings, unconscious, unresponsive. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. police say the man was wanted on a $10,000 warrant. the governor and bay area leaders are at the vatican for a two-day social justice and climate change symposium. governor brown's adviser tweeted this photo of brown and his wife ann who started their day with mass at st. peter's basilica.

the symposium starts tomorrow. a new era is under way in american-cuban diplomat relations. ending more than half a century of cold war animosity. here's more. >> reporter: after 50 years, the u.s. and cuba have restored full diplomatic relations reopening embassies in each other's capitals. a cuban delegation of diplomats, artists and veterans of the cuban revolution commemorate the break-through. the cuban flag raised outside the embassy in washington, d.c. the sinkging of the cuban national anthem. on the caribbean island workers and diplomats have been preparing everything from new business cards to the embassy sign. although things are quiet outside the building today. >> today with the opening of our embassies and the visit of

the foreign minister, we are taking a historic and long overdue step in the right direction. to keep moving forward, both governments must proceed in a spirit of openness and mutual respect. >> reporter: and that engagement includes making it easier for some groups to visit cuba from the united states. cuba and the u.s. broke diplomatic relations in 1961, when cuban president fidel castro ban issued u.s. diplomats calling the u.s. embassy a nest of spies. some presidential candidates say cuba has not done enough. >> i would end the diplomatic relations with the tyranny until such time as they actually held a democratic opening of cuba. >> reporter: the festivities and flag raising in cuba will have to wait for secretary of state john kerry's visit. the official embassy reopening is scheduled there for early august.

stephanie ramos, abc news, washington. break-ups in some cases can be lucrative, especially if you're ebay or paypal. ebay rang the nasdaq closing bell remotely from san jose today, the first day of trading without paypal. paypal spun off from ebay on friday. this morning it debuted as a separate publicly traded company. the shares of both companies gained. ebay rose nearly 2.5% paypal closed up near 5%. new york city's mayor is rejecting calls that afternoon to have a live debate with uber. they've invited bill de blasio to participate in a live streamed conversation about the company's future. the mayor supports a proposal to cap uber's growth for one year, while its impact is studied.

through uber, you can help support california special olympic athletes. for the next week the ride sharing app is offering an inspire ride option. if riders choose this choice, the company will donate $1 to support special olympic athletes. the ride will be the same cost as uber x. back to the weather now. i just got back from hawaii. >> tell us more. >> it was rough. for two weeks. but the weather was really odd. it was so humid, and that's normally not the case in the islands. it seemed like the same weather system with all the humidity has made its way here. >> you brought it back to us thanks larry. >> yes. there has been an increase in humidity here as well as in the hawaiian islands because of the tropical and subtropical moisture flowing in both directions. sunny skies right now over the bay area. a rather brisk breeze has developed near the coast.

cooling influence near the coast already. but still pretty warm and humid in the inland areas. 8 degrees cooler in san francisco than it was this hour yesterday. 10 degrees cooler in hayward, 9 degrees cooler in oakland. the big change close to the coast and the bay. inland areas haven't experienced quite so big a change from yesterday. right now, we're looking at humidity dew point temperatures, fairly elevated. so that explains the humid feel to the air we have today. cooling, drying relief on the way. these are our forecast features. cooler pattern for the next few days drier air arrives tomorrow. that's beginning to happen already. a seasonal pattern will continue through the weekend. there is the remnant low for what was tropical storm and hurricane dolores moving westward. it's kicked the tropical moisture up and down the area

which explains the rise in humidity we had the past couple of days. drier air from our northwest blowing in our direction. some of that humidity is still a headache out towards the hawaiian islands. 7:00 this evening, we'll see a combination of high middle-level clouds moving over as well as low clouds near the coast. we'll be getting back to normal by tomorrow afternoon. overnight lows will be generally in the 60s. still above average. not quite so high as last night. tomorrow's high, low to mid-80s in the south bay, upper 70s to about 80 on the peninsula. low to mid-60s on the coast. low to mid-80s across the north bay valleys tomorrow. low 70s to near 80 in the east bay tomorrow. in the inland east bay, not hot like today. certainly not muggy with highs mainly in the mid to upper 80s. here's the seven day forecast. the cooling continues wednesday thursday and friday. temperatures back up a couple of

the weekend there. martin martinez is accused of killing two women and three young children inside the home. one of the women was martinez's own mother. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodruff said the other woman killed was martinez's ex-girlfriend and the other victim was their 6-month-old daughter. vic lee spoke with martin martinez's uncle who says he doesn't know if his nephew is guilty, but justice will prevail. vic also just spoke with martinez's cousin. you'll hear what she has to say in his live report at 5:00. also there's new key discoveries in the chattanooga shooting rampage investigation today. the fbi has found the gunman's diary, giving disturbing details about this young man's background. marcy gonzalez joining us live in new york with the story. marcy? >> reporter: larry, at this point they don't believe he's linked to any terror groups.

the fbi did find some alarming searches on his cell phone and they're learning more about his past. today dozens of additional fbi agents are in chattanooga, still piecing together why mohammad youssuf abdulazeez who had no known connection to isis chose military facilities as his targets. investigators focusing today on this walmart where they claim the 24-year-old was joined by two other men as he bought ammunition just days before last week's deadly shooting rampage. many paying tribute to the four marines and one sailor killed. >> you want to serve this country. that's what he did. >> reporter: investigators look for a motive. analyzing what abdulazeez's family said was a recent fascination with powerful weapons, highlighted by this video he reposted about ak-47s. >> excellent gun, made well. they run great. >> reporter: despite the smiles in these new images provided to abc news, abdulazeez's family

described him to investigators as a conflicted young man with mental health issues who was on the verge of bankruptcy and wrote in his diary about suicide and being a martyr after losing his job in 2013. along with being on prescription medication, their son abused alcohol and marijuana. the family is so concerned, they said they sent him to jordan last year to get him away from friends who were bad influences in the u.s. the fbi now looking into whether he was radicalized during that seven-month trip. and we learned today that the fbi found abdulazeez's, did search jihadist websites on his cell phone. he called his sister two days before the attack to express shame about a recent dui arrest. and his family believes that may have been the trigger. marcy gonzalez, abc 7 news. katie, back to you. >> masseyground work laid for lifting

international sanctions against iran. it sets up an angry showdown in congress. if congress refuses to lift penalties against iran, it could collapse the entire agreement. iran has pledged to let international monitors inspect its facilities for the next ten years. arizona senator john mccain is responding to remarks by presidential candidate donald trump who dismissed the former vietnam's p.o.w. status. he was five years a p.o.w. mccain said trump does not need to apologize to him personally. >> i think he may owe an apology to the families of those who have sacrificed in conflict. >> trump's criticism of mccain continues with trump saying, mccain has abandoned the nation's veterans.

a three-story sculpture of a naked woman in the east bay. live now near the san leandro b.a.r.t. station. the reception is not entirely warm. >> reporter: to give you some perspective how large this sculpture is i'm average height 5'5". and the foot on point would be much taller than i am. you can imagine how that would stack up next to the b.a.r.t. platform behind me. riders rolling through the east bay will likely come eye level with the naked torso. >> it's a controversial piece of sculpture because she's big, and she's beautiful. and she has no clothes on. >> reporter: the 55-foot sculpture named truth is beauty by marco cochran is moving to san leandro's new tech campus. >> she's symbolic of the art in san leandro, and also

renaissance of technology particularly in terms of women. >> reporter: art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and this time the beholder is a private company. the city required the developer to set aside 1% of the construction budget for public art. >> we did not have any -- put in the contract any jurisdiction, or requirement that it be approved. >> i think it's great. san leandro is out in front. >> reporter: resident and business owner, mike, isn't offended by the sculpture's full frontal. >> whatever draws attention and brings people to san leandro would be good. >> reporter: others say it draws the wrong kind of attention, illustrated in this letter to the editor of the san leandro times. truth is beauty, but tacky is forever. some may recognize the sculpture from a trip to burning man in 2011. city planners hope to attract those same people. >> really changed the image of san leandro, with mill el yans tech millennials, women in

firefighters are making big progress containing a devastating wildfire that pred on to interstate 15 last week. 20 vehicles, including two big rigs burned in the out-of-control fire. the north fire has now burned more than 4,200 acres.

it is now 75% contained, and all evacuations have been lifted. >>. another check of the forecast with spencer christian. >> we're going to get cooler and drier air coming in overnight and into tomorrow. things will get back to the more typical seasonal pattern. here's a look at cloud buildup down in the mt. hamilton area. we have otherwise calm conditions. looks like a little bit of a storm cloud buildup over the higher terrain, down to our south. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. mostly sunny skies right now. low clouds developing at the coastline. we have thunderstorm clouds over in the sierra and mountains in clear lake where thunderstorms have been rambling throughout the afternoon. the national outlook for tomorrow, there will be scattered thunderstorms along the atlantic coast in the eastern great lakes area. a few storms in the midsection

the dating website ashley madison which connects married people seeking affairs was hit by hackers last night. the hackers called themselves the impact team. they have leaked part of the data that they've retrieved online. they threatened to release customers' real names unless the website is shut down. the site claims to have 37 million members. police are searching for a man caught on camera stealing a car with a baby girl in the back seat. the little girl is fine. she's home safe now. she was taken sunday outside a new jersey gas station. the surveillance video shows the child's grandmother pulling up and entering the store, left the keys in the ignition and her granddaughter in the back seat. the suspect jumped right into the driver's seat and took off in the car. the grandmother went after him, but no luck. >> i don't care how much of a split second you're going to be in the store take the baby out. i don't care if they want the car. take the baby out. >> take the keys too. police were able to use the signal from the grandmother's cell phone to track the car's location. they found the car abandoned a

half an hour later. the little girl was safe inside. >> goodness. harper lee's new book "go set a watchman" is shattering records. the company announced the highly anticipated novel is the fastest selling book in the company's history. the book which went on sale last tuesday has already sold more than 1.1 million copies in the u.s. and canada. lee wrote the novel in the 1950s, before pulitzer prize-winning "to kill a mockingbird." it's currently number one on every major best seller list. there are renewed calls for improved safety inside of limousines after four young women died in a crash over the weekend. limousine on a new york highway was nearly split in two when a truck slammed into the middle of that vehicle over the weekend. the eight women inside were enjoying a wine tasting tour. authorities believe the driver of the pickup truck was drunk. the limo only had two seat belts. >> limos more dangerous if

a look at tonight's primetime lineup at 8:00, the bachelorette followed by the whisperers, and abc 7 news at 11:00. this is moving day for a house in san francisco. not for the people inside but for the actual structure itself. the 120-year-old house is actually moving just 80 feet. amy shows us crews have to be really careful.

>> reporter: two men who showed up for work today will really have something to show for it this afternoon. the two will move this house over by 80 feet. just two guys pulling the house, inch by inch. >> it's exciting. as everything it doesn't move quickly. but it's moving. >> reporter: the 80-year-old home across from the city's panhandle sits right where the urban school of san francisco plans to build a high school gym and some classrooms. so the house has to go. they didn't want to demolish it. >> it's a really nice house, once you go inside you'll see the moldings and everything. it's a beautiful old house. and should really be preserved. it also has historic value as well. >> reporter: neighbors agree. it's worth saving. >> it's our heritage. if we wanted to look like fremont, we could do it. but people come because it's unique. >> reporter: the school plans to turn the building into affordable housing. >> hard to hire teachers and find places for them to live right now.

marzullo. >> and i'm dan ashley. these deaths have over the weekend shocked family and friends in two different communities. the victims' family in modesto and the suspect's family in san jose. martin martinez is accused of killing three children along with his former girlfriend and his own mother. melody woodrow is live in modesto. >> reporter: the biggest surprise tonight is that modesto police and child protective services were already investigating martinez in connection with another child's death some nine months ago. still, despite that information investigators said today there were no signs that this kind of violence would occur. new information modesto police saying before martin martinez was suspected of killing five people inside this home, he was the main suspect in the homicide investigation of a 2-year-old, nine months ago. police say little christopher ripley suffered possible brain injuries while martinez cared for him. ripley was the son of dr. amanda

cruz from a previous marriage. police say cruz one of the five victims killed saturday was now in a relationship with martinez. with all due respect, did the police department drop the ball on this one? mr. martinez was a suspect in the 2-year-old's death, and for nine months he was allowed to still have continued contact with this family and these children. could all of these individuals' deaths have been prevented? >> the police department did not drop the ball on this. at that time there was no indication that there would be any violence within that family. there had been no calls for service at that location. >> reporter: the chief said child protective services was involved and martinez wasn't living in the house the last two months. today we learned mother about the victims 38-year-old amanda cruz a 6-year-old daughter named elizabeth from cruz's prior marriage, 6-month-old rachel dr. cruz's daughter with martinez martinez's own mother 57-year-old anna brown romero and 5-y
