dr. amanda cruz from a previous marriage. police say cruz one of the five victims killed saturday was now in a relationship with martinez. with all due respect, did the police department drop the ball on this one? mr. martinez was a suspect in the 2-year-old's death, and for nine months he was allowed to still have continued contact with this family and these children. could all of these individuals' deaths have been prevented? >> the police department did not drop the ball on this. at that time there was no indication that there would be any violence within that family. there had been no calls for service at that location. >> reporter: the chief said child protective services was involved and martinez wasn't living in the house the last two months. today we learned mother about the victims 38-year-old amanda cruz a 6-year-old daughter named elizabeth from cruz's prior marriage, 6-month-old rachel dr. cruz's daughter with martinez martinez's own mother 57-year-old anna brown romero and 5-year-old relative.

outside the ex-husband's home, pictures of 2-year-old christopher and 6-year-old elizabeth with the message, they did not have to die and the claim they both died at the hand of martinez. police have not released a motive but said a forensic specialist discovered that 2-year-old christopher ripley's death was from blunt force trauma. not an accident. >> very limited people knew that that report came out. >> reporter: the chief did not say whether or not amanda cruz knew, only that investigators do not believe the report played a factor in saturday's incident. in modesto melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> cruz worked with the health services agency. cruz's patients are speaking fondly of her today. jennifer french had seen cruz for more than 11 years with back pain depression and more. cruz was in the delivery room when french gave birth to her son who has cerebral palsy. she said dr. cruz was caring and had a positive impact on her life.

>> she knew everything about him, so she knew how to help me when i had to go to a new doctor. i don't know what i'll do. it's going to be weird. she helped me through a lot. >> cruz's workplace said dr. cruz was a beloved part of our care team. we are grieving deeply. we've known her since she joined the physician residency program since a young doctor and blossomed into a highly respected member. martin martinez was arrested early yesterday morning at a south bay shopping mall. abc 7 news reporter vic lee spoke with some of them today at the san jose home where family members have gathered at this time. vic? >> reporter: one of martinez's family members just concluded a presser for the reporters who had had staked out the street where the uncle's home is located. basically she said that the family's trying to figure out what went wrong. what happened. she said the family knew of no

mental issues to speak of. and she said that martinez loved his baby. they did know he broke up with dr. cruz but said they had a long loving relationship prior to that. >> i'm trying to put the pieces together myself. >> reporter: gina martinez is the suspect's cousin. she and other family members are trying to get answers. >> i'm grieving for him too. i just want to see him and ask him what's going on. >> reporter: here's how her cousin was caught early yesterday morning. after martin martinez was identified as a person of interest modesto police tipped off san jose police he might be driving his red lincoln navigator to his uncle's home. after modesto police made the grisly discovery, san jose police found the car saturday parked at the house. they staked out the lincoln but received another trip that martinez had already left with a family member in another car. that family member turned out to be his father. they went here to the westfield

oak ridge mall to see a movie. martinez's uncle does not want his last name moved. he said his father has had a rough couple of years. he lost one of his sons last year and now his wife. he told abc 7 news if his nephew was guilty, he probably never told his father about the murders. >> i would suspect he didn't. my brother says he didn't. >> reporter: in fact ernie says martinez and his father enjoyed the evening together saturday night. >> they were coming out of the movie. who goes to a movie. >> reporter: ernie told us he didn't know if his nephew did it, but if he's guilty, justice will prevail. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> new details emerge about the former night manager of a south bay science camp accused of child molestation. the 27-year-old has been under investigation by the feds that he was under investigation months before accused of six you'lly assaulting a minor in

saratoga. according to the media partners at mercury news. homeland security officials contacted the former camp worker in december of last year. after he sent an undercover investigator a link to 14 child sex videos. another delay tonight in the trial of a man charged with killing of a vallejo police officer. deliberations must start over. jurors are deciding whether bank robbery suspect henry smith shot and killed officer jim in 2011. the judge just removed a juror from bias against police after the juror allegedly told a court bailiff that the sheriff's deputy was quote, a thug with a gup. this is the second time deliberations had to start over. earlier a juror had to be replaced due to a health emergency. a close call for residents of one pleasanton neighborhood as a fast-moving fire swept up a hill near 680 freeway. at one point flames got dangerously to a fire fighting

truck before crews figured out what was going on and moved that vehicle. they're backing out of the way. laura anthony is live in pleasanton with more. laura? >> reporter: came close to buildings here as well. it's warm and windy out here. but this is normal for the afternoon. what was not normal this morning was when this whole hillside went up just after 10:00 a.m. a frightening sign of the times that signals how deep and dangerous the drought has become. by 10:30 this morning, there were two brush fires burning near pleasanton. this one dangerously close to home. >> luckily we got back from vacation last night. all our bags were packed. my wife said, throw everything in the car. so i had everything in the car. we didn't see the fire department right away. >> reporter: thanks to helicopter drops like this one firefighters from several agencies were able to get the upper hand fairly quickly. >> to have a fire of this magnitude at 10:30 in the morning is rare for us.

normally we see this size of a fire late in the afternoon. >> that's happy valley road. >> reporter: a neighbor first heard the aircraft overhead. she went down the street to fake the photos near her home. >> we just started hearing all of this aircraft flying really low over the house. it sounded like a war or something. >> reporter: crews stayed on scene for some time after the flames died down. knowing there could be a lot more like this before this fire season comes to an end. near pleasanton laura anthony, abc 7 news. investigators now say a homeowner mowing his lawn sparked by a 35-acre fire. east county took these pictures of the fire on deer valley road near brentwood. the fire threatened homes at one point. but no one was hurt. the hot weather has increased the danger of wildfires in the bay area. it is particularly hot and sticky. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya

district with a $1.5 million fine for taking water that they should not have. the state accuses the bethany irrigation district of taking water from a pumping station for two weeks after it was told it was not entitled to do so. the district is the so-called senior water rights holder which is generally protected from mandatory cutbacks. they sued the state over water cuts. the district serves mountain house in san joaquin county. much more ahead this monday night. coming up the regional rodeo now facing charges of animal cruelty. how the search for e.t. is now going right through the bay area. tonight, the tycoon spending $100 million to hunt for aliens. flights now fly as the united states and cuba established diplomatic relations. plus the smithsonian's museum one small step to preserve history.

a teenager is recovering after surviving a 300-foot fall off a cliff in san francisco. we can show you the video of the 18-year-old coming off a rescue boat and placed on a stretcher. the san francisco fire department said the teenager was walking with a friend by a trail called dead man's point when he fell. he is expected, we are glad to tell you to recover. the san jose fire department said the cause of a two-alarm apartment fire last month was electrical. it broke out the morning of june 25th on story road. two children and one woman went to the hospital with burns. they're trying to determine where the electrical failure actually happened. in london today, a russian

moisture from tropical storm dolores moving into the area. that's what's firing off the thunderstorms. not just up in lake county but the sierra nevada as you can see. there is a flash flood watch for the sierra until 10:00 p.m. tonight. the thunderstorms do contain some pretty heavy rain. that flash flood watch extends down to southern california and east into nevada. so keep that in mind if you do some traveling. here's a look at the dew points. see the areas in the 60s range? that's where it's still feeling a bit humid. hayward, mountainview, santa rosa, napa fairfield, we'll get rid of that very soon. some of that moisture from dolores showing up in the form of clouds. 73 in oakland. currently in the mid-80s in san jose. a live look from our south beach camera. this was clouds building near mt. hamilton. we're not worried about thunderstorms down there. 90 in santa rosa. mid-80s napa.

here's what you have to look forward to to bring you the cooling. the marine layer from the emoryville camera. we'll see more are the low clouds and fog in the next couple of days leading to the cooler pattern. drier air arrives tomorrow. it's going to be nice weather into the weekend. basically the low pressure associated with dolores, moving away from california. drier air coming in from the north. and that's going to mean it will feel better for you out there tomorrow. especially toward the afternoon hours. tonight we'll have the fog around near the coast. we'll still have some high clouds coming in, going into tomorrow morning's commute. still on the mild side when you leave home for work. but it will be getting back to normal by tomorrow afternoon and evening with the fog at the coast, and the drier air across the bay area. it is going to be warm inland tomorrow morning when you leave home. but not as warm as this morning. we'll have more of the marine influence. so mid-60s in our inland spots. upper 50s to low 60s along the

will become the next chief economist at the international monetary fund. maurice onesfelt was appointed to the post. he is considered one of the top scholars of international economics and is currently on leave from cal's economics department. all the foreign currency travelers bring back from abroad will have a new kind of value. a southern california company says it will install kiosks around the bay area that will accept five foreign currencies and exchange them for gift cards or charitable donations. leftover cash said bay area travelers will see the kiosks by the summer of 2016. slight gains on wall street today for ebay and paypal on their first day of trading as separate companies. ebay executives rang the bell remotely from the san jose headquarters this afternoon. they officially split from its longtime payment company paypal
