live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> no officer comes to work wanting to be involved in something like that. they are very difficult. they are difficult for those involved. they are difficult for the family. they are difficult for the community. >> a hayward police sank. is hot and killed during a traffic stop. this morning, law enforcement from across the bay area honor the man known as the leader in his department. thank you for joining us. i am matt keller. >> i am eric thomas. the shooting victim is 48-year-old hayward police sergeant scott lunger, colleagues say he was well respected accomplished officer. the shooting happened during a traffic stop after 3:00 this

morning near myrtle and lion street. the driver took off and abandoned the truck eight miles away in oakland at 98th. sergeant scott longer was taken to castro valley where he died. we have team coverage. our reporter is at the hospital but, first, we go to janet o where a news conference just wrapped up. janet? >> the flags here at city hall have been lowered to half staff in honor of sergeant scott lunger shot and killed in the line of duty this morning. hayward police told a news conference for a while ago and they say they lost one of the finest. >> scott lunger is a 15-year veteran of our police department he was promoted to sergeant in 2009 and member of the s.w.a.t. family and the ideal police officer. scott loved this job. this is a tragedy that this

happened. >> police say linger was trying to stop a driver who was swerving erratically when the driver shot him. this happened at 3:14 this morning, a second officer on the scene returned fire but the driver drove off. this is the moment scott lunger was taken away by ambulance. police will not confirm how many times he was shot on where he was shot. he was transported to the medical center in castro valley where he was later pronounced dead. neighbors described hearing the exchange of gunfire early this morning. >> the shots were so rapid fire it was war-like. bam. bam. bam. bam. bam. bam. bam. about seven. >> terrible. it could have just been a ticket and he made it something even worse. police have a "person of interest" based on the vehicle registration of this white pickup truck found abandoned at an oakland intersection.

there were at least five bullet hole on the driver side. the truck and plates match the christmas on the vehicle and sky 7 shows the truck being towed away. it will be a critical piece of evidence in the investigation. other law enforcement agencies assisting hayward police have been at the scene all morning and they were stopping drivers asking them if they witnessed anything. we have learned that scott lunger is 48 and a father to two daughters. they have yet to make an arrest at the shooting and they only have one person of interest. >> thank you. a huge display of support from baby area law enforcement for the bay area police department and eden medical center in castro valley. >> it was so quiet here and somber and respectful and crowded. dozens of officers gathered at

the hospital door to show their respect. it was quite something to see. they stood at attention as sergeant scott lunger's body was carried out of the hospital to the coroner's van. we saw officers from oakland police department the c.h.p. bart police alameda county sheriff, and of course hayward police. they all say they wanted to show support for the officer's family and his police department. they wanted to make sure his body received an escort to the coroner's office. it wasn't just law enforcement who came out this morning people would live near the hospital stood along the street to show police they support them and to thank them. >> it makes me sad. it make me mad. i need to come out and show my support. whether it is...there is no one out here...but every little bit accounts. >> i cannot imagine a cop stopping a guy at a traffic light could have this could be anything but routine and i am

guessing he didn't deserve it. i felt bad that anyone who is to lose their life offer it. people who came out say it was very emotional to see the officer escorting the coroner's van. this is a moment you drop everything and you go. investigators stopped what they are doing, put on their uniforms and get to the hospital to show respect when this happens to a department close by. police departments in the bay area are starting to put the black bands over their badges as they mourn sergeant lunger and all local departments will make plans to send funerals do his funeral to show support. thank you, the tragedy played out over police radio airwaves early this morning and you can hear how quickly it escalated from a traffic stop. it is intense and emotional. it could be unsettling. >> the second is clear it is expires.

14. francisco sanchez walked into a courtroom at hall of justice this morning looking thin and frail. this is a retrial conference. francisco sanchez admitted to killing kate steinle in an interview but has pleaded not guilty. neither prosecutors or the defense talked to the media. >> firefighters in vallejo put out this fire burning at a vacant commercial building that break out on sacramento street near daniels avenue shortly after 3:30 this morning. no one was hurt. investigators say the same building previously caught fire. homeless people were staying there. >> morgan hill police are asking to identify a man caught on surveillance video trying to break into a home 11 days ago. the homeowner security camera captured the suspect near a fence. he appears to lack into the camera. police posted video on facebook hoping someone will recognize the man. thieves have struck again at uc berkeley swiping computers

could be a bumpy ride home if you take the ferry to vallejo or to san rafael not of the -- east of the golden gate bridge and north of the bay bridge. you can see the sunshine along the north bay coast that is it and everyone else is going to be cloudy. while the rest of us the sunshine is tempered by the winds. already 77 in san ramon one of warm spots and 76 in livermore and areas that received sunshine first but you can see clouds at half moon bay and san francisco and oakland and san mateo and that is why we are stuck in the 60s. this trough is going to reinforce the cool and dry air and kick up the breezes this afternoon and they will reach all of us and that is why the 90s are out of the forecast. as high as we can get in the south bay is mid-80s in leg hockey and gilroy and everyone else in the mid-to-upper 70s not necessarily pool weather but it is getting close with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s to los altos and mountain view and millbrae is a brick 70. half moon bay is 63 and pacifica
