fantastic 4, only in theaters. we are following two big stories. one is a heartbreaking vigil for a fallen hero. the local officer shot and killed during a traffic stop. >> and crews are struggling to gain ground on a fire that is raging out of control and has been for hours sending people running for safety tonight. good evening, everyone. i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. we start with the breaking news out of napa county where a fast-moving fire has exploded and is threatening homes and forcing vac -- having evacuations. >> it is spreading to solano and yolo counties. right now the fire burned more than 4,000 acres and it is still growing. with 5% containment it is out of control. there are 150 structures that are threatened and threatening

mandatory evacuations. >> residents have been told to get out. campers at canyon creek have also been evacuated. >> alan wang is live at the fire line with more. >> reporter: you can see the fire burning down the ridge toward us and the homes along this road. the good news is that the winds have died down and the humidity is up. the hope now is that firefighters can get a handle on this before it picks back up in the morning. >> drought ridden trees went up like torches as the winds pushed the flames into quail canyon. they sent in this air tanker to protect about a hundred homes here. >> my husband was a little more calm and he is like it is not that close as you think. i don't care i want to get out of here. >> three hikers were rescued. the fast-moving flames jumped the road as wildlife scampered out of the brush.

bulldozers were called in to carve out another line of defense while a farmer's herd of was tell and horses were left to fend for themselves. >> we will let them migrate. there is a bull down there. >> the evacuees say it started around 2:30 this afternoon when the winds were whipping through the canyon. >> it was windy from the beginning. we have a flag hanging and the winds were going all different ways. >> firefighters have decided to make their stand along quail canyon road. >> that's right here. evacuees may not know if their home survived until tomorrow morning. reporting live north of vacaville, abc7 news. >> they are told to grow to the red cross evacuation center in yolo county. a larnl animal -- large animal evacuation center has opened along county road 31. we have all of the info posted

at abc7news.com. >> just listen to the fear and the voices of the people trying toes scape the fire. to escape the fire. you may have seen what started the fire, a car that crashed off the side of the road. this video was shot a short time after the fire began. they are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. >> the dry conditions and the high winds are giving crews a hard time. abc7 news meteorologist has a look. how much smoke is being produced from this fire? it is intense. >> it is indeed. i will show you the signature of the smoke. this is the radar tracking the smoke plume and it really extended from where the fire originated all the way out

coming together to remember a hero. katie joins us live from police headquarters where a memorial is growing there. katie? >> he leaves behind two teenage daughters and an entire community is mourning the loss. it is evident by the large memorial behind me. you can see it now it spans along the wall at hayward police headquarters, and it is evident by the many people who showed up at a candlelight vigil tonight. >> candles lit for the life of hayward sergeant shot and killed while serving his community. >> and turn the hatred and the violence. >> people lined up to hug officers at a vigil organized by the day lay wore center which has worked closely with police. >> behind the gun and the badge they are human. they talk to you and he is a very nice man, a kind man. >> people from hayward and

beyond began laying flowers early in the morning. >> my wife told me a police officer was shot and killed and it hits the heart. >> he served for two years before joining hayward in 2001. people remember him on duty. >> he was a sweet guy. he cared very much about the motorcyclist that fell down. he took care of him. he really just tried to do the very best. >> the 48-year-old officer wore other uniforms. he coached at freedom high school in oakley. diane urban calls him an inspiration. >> we have suffered a tremendous loss today. the world is a little worse for him being gone. >> i wish diane was here. i want to hold her and say i'm sorry. >> sorry for the light distinguished too soon. a ray of hope. >> i know he wants to be a police officer when he gets older. >> comes from a 7-year-old eager to shake the hand of an

officer. in hayward abc7 news. >> and we are also learning more about the suspect tonight. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in hayward where the fatal shooting occurred. cornell? >> this is the spot where he stopped 21-year-old mark anthony estrada for reckless driving. seconds later he fired on him of the it marks the spot of the tragedy and the scene is not far from where the suspect worked. >> pop pop pop. >> neighbors woke to the exchange of gunfire. >> i heard the screaming tires. it took off right afterwards, right after the gunshots. >> hayward police say without warning the suspect opened fire on lungar seconds after he stopped the truck for erratic driving. after he went down his partner fired on the pick up as it sped away. >> partner down. partner down.

>> they were doing cpr to him. >> he was rushed to the center where he passed away from his wounds. the truck was riddled with bullet holes and found a short time later in oakland. >> we have a suspect in custody. mark anthony estrada. >> estrada was wounded in the shooting. he is being treated at highland hospital. he has ties to street gangs but no criminal record. meantime hayward police searched this home in oakland and removed bags of evidence. >> we have recovered some ammunition during a search warrant. we have recovered a gun. >> the chief says estrada is not cooperating with authorities. a hayward roofing company confirms that estrada has worked here for the past two weeks. his father has been an employee for 19 years. management sends its condolences to his family. neighbors are leaving flowers for him at the spot of so much

grown to 4000 acres and spread from napa to yolo and solano counties. people in the quail ridge and golden bear communities are under mandatory evacuation. campers and hikers in can -- canyon creek have been evacuated. the fire is 5% contained. >> abc7 news meteorologist drew touma is here with photos from people using our hash tag. >> this first one is as he is pulling out. he showed this picture of the fire and the smoke and the flames. he captured this scary video of the flames getting close to a house. it is in the path of the fire. another image coming in from the smoke and you can see it rising thousands of feet into the air. one final video and this is coming from christina brown looking north at the fire. you can see how expansive the smoke has been all afternoon and evening. of course if you see something and can shoot it safely, use # abc7 news.

>> drew, thank you. the police chief is retiring after spending nearly three decades protecting his hometown. he made it official today. he says he feels it is time for the next generation to lead. he has been with the department for nearly 30 years and chief for the last three. he lead during a tumultuous time facing retention issues and poor morale. >> we are at a point i think that i think we are looking toward the light. it will take some time and it may take an administration or two. >> he will take over on an interim basis. his last day on-the-job will be january 16th. another san jose state football player is in trouble. it happened after a fight with another player. freshman chad miller was hospitalized after a fight at a university dorm. the other player who was not named was suspended from the team while authorities investigate. it comes after yet another player, a third, freshman recruit kenya bell junior was

cut from the team after being arrested on domestic battery charges. santa clara county has approved a new contract after a second vote. one union rejected the offer 6789. it would cover hospital lab technicians. >> lieutenant governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency. they were pounded by a rare summer storm. the areas include los angeles, riverside and san diego county. severe storms this past weekend caused flash flooding and mudslide. it also damaged roads and highways. >> no storms here but quite windy weather here. >> windy and cooler as we bring sandhya back for a look at the forecast. >> it sure didn't feel like summer today. the temperatures were well below normal. it is a nice break from the heat. as you look at live doppler 7hd, right now we have the fog. it is not just near the coast,

but it is over the bay or the low clouds. i want to show you the plume of smoke from the fire. the rag fire is extending all the way out toward the sacramento valley. this is just taking you back in time as long as the sun was out. the firefighters should get a little help because the clouds cover will be increasing as we head toward tomorrow morning. of course that will had a little humidity to the air and the winds will be relaxing a bit. temperatures in the bay area are in the upper 50s to the low 60s. still have a pretty good breeze blowing through the fair field area where there were gusty winds. overcast skies right now and that's what you will wake up to. spotty drizzle and below average on saturday. it will get warmer on sunday going into next week. into next week it will be even hotter. so there are a couple of systems that have been coming through here and it is bringing us the cooler than normal conditions. that will rase a few more days

and then -- will last a few more days and then things will turn around. 65 in downtown san francisco. you will see cool conditions in daly city. 61 if you will be in half moon bay. 63 and cloudy and then redwood city will see the sun with mid70s, mild in sunnyvale, 74 and 77 in san jose with plenty of sun. we are not looking at our microclimates. it is just a nice variety of weather with conditions ranging from cloudy to sunny. and you will see the cloud cover with the pockets of drizzle. be careful during the morning commute. you will run into damp roadways. you notice the spotty green there. it is a we head toward the afternoon hours things change. lots of sunshine and the cloud cover near the coast starts to shrink. we will hang on to some of it, but it won't be as cloudy as what you wake up to. mid50s to the low 60s. then for the afternoon it will be a nice day. mild inland. 80 in antioch. 77 concord. 73 in san rafael.
