good morning, america. breaking right now, a wall of flames sends vacationers scrambling for safety. this family tries to out fire at a national park. >> go now, go. like, no fast, dad, go. new video this morning of a growing california fire threatening homes. thousands of acres scorched forcing evacuation. and the lightning strike at a beach going off like a bomb. three people rushed to the hospital. air scare. a united jet forced to make an emergency landing. >> yeah, united still have five passed out. everybody's on oxygen. >> passengers falling ill. oxygen masks deployed. one person hospitalized. what caused this medical scare? new this morning, jailhouse mystery. new details about sandra bland's death. the just released recording from behind bars. >> i'm still just at a loss for

words honestly about this whole process. >> what we now know she told her jailers. her family reacts to that dash cam video and what they're learning in their own investigation, only on "gma" this morning. ♪ there is beauty in the world ♪ and beauty and the beast. the pageant contestant with the unusual hobby. what she's doing with these sharks that has some experts outraged. she has thousands of fans online but some are saying they need to protect the predators from her. and good morning, america. we want to get right to those wildfires burning right now in two popular summer vacation spots. look at the flames there in napa valley and glacier national park in montana. >> and those are just two of nearly two dozen fires that are burning right now and moving quickly, scorching thousands of acres, forcing people to evacuate, and abc's aditi roy starts us off in napa valley, california. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, amy.

take a look at those flames blazing behind me. this fire is burning fast and furious, fanned by heavy winds and incredibly dry conditions, threatening homes and forcing people to get out. >> oh, my. >> go. go, dad, go. >> reporter: this morning, dramatic new video of one family escaping a wall of fire running rampant in the world famous glacier national park. >> i don't want to die of flames. go now, go. like, no, fast, dad, go. >> reporter: panic kicking in as the flames stampede across the parklands getting too close for comfort. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: overnight the wind-driven inferno doubling in size chewing through an estimated 4,000 acres during the park's peak tourist season, even forcing visitors to abandon their cars. this road shut down for 50 miles. >> the road corridor was impacted pretty hard, and we

couldn't even get firefighters through there. >> reporter: this wildfire just one of dozens raging through western states. this morning, more than 400 firefighters battling another massive blaze burning out of control near napa. the fire exploding overnight to more than 5,000 acres. this morning, new cell phone video showing what officials believe sparked that blaze, this car on fire after an accident, the flames spreading. the fire now raging dangerously close to this busy highway and these homes threatening 200 structures. officials forcing residents in two neighborhoods to evacuate. >> it's close enough, i want to get out of here. >> reporter: the toughest part about this fire, the steep terrain and heavy winds. right now it's only 5% contained. ginger.

>> aditi, the erratic winds are going to keep being a problem as we go through the coming days. let me show you what's happening here. we have many of the western states from alaska to arizona with 23 large wildfires, 19 of them burning on this side of the nation. you saw the pictures from napa and from glacier national park but you know there are others. and this is why. a lot of the moisture is stuck and trapped under the cold front. they're not going to get into it. there's a high parked up in canada. the wind gusts will go up towards 25, 30 miles per hour and they do do one of these deal they go from all different directions. there in napa you've got a trough coming in so that's going to affect the winds but more pacific moisture will make its way in at least. we will have much more coming up in the nation's weather. for now back to george and amy. >> maybe a little relief. we're going to go to another scary scene on the beach in florida. three people injured when lightning struck, one in critical condition this morning and abc's kendis gibson is in miami beach with the story. good morning, kendis. >> reporter: good morning, george. scary, indeed. the beach is back open this morning but what a horrifying scene. lifeguards spotted the lightning offshore. and they tried to get everybody

out of the water but for a group of three friends, it was too late. >> the guy out here got hit by lightning. >> reporter: this morning the video capturing the chaotic moments minutes after a bolt of lightning struck the south florida beach wednesday. >> i saw three people and they kind of looked like zombies like paralyzed. >> reporter: rescuers running to get to the three victims. >> the noise was very big. >> reporter: lifeguards were clearing the beach when this tower was struck. the bolt traveling from the tower through the sand electrifying the ocean. >> nobody could scream. that's how strong the shock was. >> reporter: one of the victims airlifted to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition this morning. >> cardiac arrest. >> reporter: the other two treated at hospitals and later released. on average 400 americans are struck by lightning every year and while we've seen the jarring force a direct lightning strikes can have like a bolt hitting this pick-up truck, it's the beaches which remain a real concern for experts this summer. lightning strikes high objects and a person on a beach is the shortest path from the sky to the ground.

and lifeguards will once again be on alert for more summer storms today with the mind-set that lightning can strike ten miles away from those storms. amy. >> important to remember, indeed, kendis, thank you. and now to some frightening moments aboard a united airlines flight from denver to los angeles. the plane forced to make an emergency landing after several passengers reported feeling ill. some even passing out. abc's david kerley is at reagan national airport with the latest on that. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. fear and anxiety may have had a lot to do with this incident and the decision by the pilot to put his plane on the ground as quickly as possible. medical or mechanical, the united airlines is trying to solve this morning. this los angeles-bound jet making an emergency landing wednesday morning. >> united still have five passed out. everybody's on oxygen. >> reporter: that was the report shortly after takeoff from denver, several of the 150 passengers reporting feeling ill. >> there was a lot of people that were complaining of being

lightheaded, nausea, sick and the gentleman looked in front of me as if he might be having a seizure when it all started. so you really couldn't tell what was going on. >> reporter: the pilot takes action deploying the oxygen masks then diverting to grand junction, colorado. >> they said that everybody put your mask on. this is a precaution. make sure you have it on and said that we're going to land here. >> paramedics standing by. >> reporter: with ambulances waiting on the tarmac, the plane's emergency landing is safe. firefighters boarding, evacuating passengers. one passenger taken to the hospital with officials believing that patient actually caused a chain reaction of sorts. >> to our best knowledge, we had one patient, several other people around that one patient got anxious, worked up, had some other medical signs and symptoms going on. >> reporter: the other passengers eventually boarding another jet bound for los angeles. now, united airlines is telling us they're checking out the aircraft to see if it could have

contributed to this incident or whether or not it was the one passenger who started feeling sick and the other people were anxious about that and started feeling symptoms themselves. george. >> okay, david, thanks very much. the race for president now, your voice, your vote, and donald trump set to make more headlines today. the republican front-runner visits the border this afternoon to shine a light on his signature issue, immigration, border security. abc's tom llamas is on the scene in laredo, texas. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good good morning. trump's comments on immigration bring him the most heat but also the most praise especially in border towns like where we are today, laredo texas and we saw up close one of the issues he was talking on the campaign trail, our porous borders. just minutes ago we saw two men walk from mexico cross the border along the fence and then border patrol agents took them down right in front of our cameras. this morning, donald trump is set to put the spotlight on the issue that put him center stage. >> there are a lot of people very excited that i'm going to the border.

>> reporter: and we saw this issue firsthand this morning witnessing a border agent take down a man right in front of us. this as the donald says he's incorruptible because of his big bucks. the federal election commission releasing his presidential financial disclosure report, which shows he's worth at least $1.4 billion and has 487 job titles. >> the top person can't be bought. i'm worth far too much money. >> reporter: trump heads to the border town of laredo, texas, today while at war with the state's former governor, rick perry. >> he put glasses on so people will think he's smart. >> reporter: hispanic immigrant groups not laughing either saying the republican presidential candidate is trumping his facts. >> you have either 11 -- anywhere from 11 million to 34 million illegal immigrants in this country. >> reporter: but a just released immigration report from pew research says the number of undocumented immigrants remains steady at 11 million, dropping from 12.2 million after the great recession.

leading the gop pack, trump is finding it lonely at the top and coming under fire. >> i'm called the jackass. you have to fight back. the country has to fight back. >> reporter: trump referring to a spat with senator lindsey graham. trump divulging graham's cell phone number. >> i don't know if it's the right number. let's try it. 202 -- [ laughter ] [ muted ] >> reporter: graham responding with this parody video destroying that cell phone with a butcher knife, blender, even a samurai sword. and this morning republicans are a little nervous about donald trump because he says he will run as an independent if the republicans don't treat him right. george. >> yeah, that's his most explicit threat. tom, thanks very much. we're going to get the latest right now on sandra bland arrested after that routine traffic stop then found dead in her jail cell three days later. this morning we're hearing her voice from jail, learning more about her past. her sister is standing by for an exclusive interview after all the latest from abc's ryan

smith. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. sandra bland's phone call from jail shows her frustration with how a minor traffic incident could have landed her in a cell but a jail intake form noting a previous suicide attempt that could raise more questions in this mysterious case. this morning, a newly released recording of sandra bland leaving this message for a friend the day after her arrest from behind bars. >> i'm still just at a loss for words honestly about this whole process. how did switching lanes with no signal turn into all of this. >> reporter: that call obtained by our houston station ktrk taking place just hours after sandra went before a judge, her bail set at $5,000. she was working to raise that money. the local sheriff shedding new light on their statement that sandra bland committed suicide releasing this intake form from the day bland was jailed with a startling admission. she attempted suicide within the last year. but to the question, are you thinking about killing yourself

today, sandra answering no. raising new questions about jailer's decision to house her alone in this cell. she was charged with assaulting a public service officer, stemming from this arrest caught on police dash cam video starting as a routine traffic stop. >> the reason for your stop is you didn't fail -- you failed to signal your lane change. >> reporter: within minutes -- >> would you mind putting out your cigarette. >> i'm in my car. why do i have to put out my cigarette? >> reporter: escalating into this. >> get out of the car. i will light you up. get out. >> wow. >> now. >> wow. >> get out of the car. >> failure to signal. you're doing all of this for a failure to signal? >> get over there! >> reporter: sandra's family outraged over the tape urging supporters to continue the fight for justice. >> keep tweeting, keep facebooking, keep utilizing the #justiceforsandy. >> reporter: that jail intake form telling different stories. at another point to the question of attempted suicide, the answer is no. on the investigation on her death despite records that an initial autopsy

of sandra bland was defective and another one is needed, authorities reportedly claim it wasn't and a second autopsy is not planned. still no word on when the autopsy report will be released, george. >> thanks, ryan. we're joined now by sandra bland's sister, sharon cooper, and the family's attorney, cannon lambert. thank you both for joining us this morning and let me begin, sharon by extending our condolences. i know you're preparing for your sister's funeral. >> thank you, george, i really appreciate it. >> you know we saw that report, the police report, that your sister told the police she tried to commit suicide after losing a baby. did you know anything about that? >> what i did know, george, was that she did lose a baby in may of 2014, and that's the most that i do know. >> but any kind of history of depression you know about you talked about the highs and lows. no clinical depression, no treatment for depression? >> absolutely not, george. >> ryan mentioned that independent autopsy has not been released yet. have you seen the results? >> i have not. i have not seen the results.

i do know that the preliminary results show that she did have deep tissue bruising to her back. >> to her back. >> which is consistent with the officer having his knee in her back. >> and you're prepared -- >> that's all we have so far. >> and you're prepared to accept the results of this independent autopsy? >> we are. >> tell me -- i mean, we all watched that dash cam video and the situation seemed to escalate so quickly. what was your reaction when you saw it? >> honestly, george, just astounded. wowed. i do believe that she intended to be cooperative as the officer asked her what was wrong with her. she answered appropriately, and i think that it escalated very quickly. >> what's the question you'd most like answered? >> george, we have so many. i have to tell you that there are so many inconsistencies in what we've been provided as a team to date, whether it's the jail documents that are noted as

8:17 even though it was expressly communicated to us that she was booked four hours prior to that time. whether it's the documents that show she did not sign any of those documents at all. >> mr. lambert, what would you all like to see happen next legally on the legal side? >> well, we'd like for them to release their full autopsy. we just yesterday got text messages from the d.a., mr. mathis, indicating that their first autopsy was botched and now they need to do another one. >> finally, sharon, what would you most like americans to know about your sister? >> how phenomenal she was and that she continues to be. it is no surprise that her presence is being reverberated and felt all throughout the world. keep her memory alive and make sure that we can really find out what happened to sandra bland. >> a lot of questions need to be answered, okay, thank you both very much. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. such a tragedy for this family. >> we hope they get their

answers. >> let's go to paula faris now with the other top stories. big news in the health care industry. >> that's right. good morning, george. good morning, amy. this is a big deal that could affect the health care that millions of americans receive. there's word that health insurer anthem is close to announcing a deal to buy cigna for $48 billion. critics say it would mean even less competition in this industry. the companies, however, arguing they need to consolidate to reduce costs. and the director of the fbi says isis now poses a greater risk to the united states than al qaeda. director james comey told the aspen security forum that the big concern is the social media campaign by isis that aims to inspire troubled americans to carry out attacks. comey says he's especially concerned about isis recruiters using encrypted communication software to evade u.s. surveillance efforts. well, the suspect in the charleston church massacre now facing federal hate crime charges clearing the way for prosecutors to seek the death penalty. investigators say dylann roof

was motivated by racial hatred. and a u.s. navy destroyer has been damaged after this test missile malfunctions during an exercise off the virginia coast. the view from a distance, quite dramatic. remarkably no one was hurt. and a royal caribbean cruise ship is back on course after a fire on board. thousands of passengers were ordered to prepare to evacuate but that fire, it was put out quickly. one crew member was burned, however. and a new victory in the push to raise the minimum wage. a state panel here in new york has given the green light to raise the minimum wage for workers at major fast food chains to $15 an hour beginning in 2018. critics predict job cuts and higher prices. authorities in milwaukee say they have received a flood of calls about reported sightings of a big cat first described as a lion seen on monday, but authorities say they have found no credible evidence that a big cat is roaming city streets yet.

held on a $1 million bond. for "good morning america," matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to matt for that. and now to the death of an american b.a.s.e. jumper, the horrifying accident caught on camera. his parachute lines getting tangled, causing the fatal plunge. this tragedy is raising the question of whether this extreme sport is just too dangerous. abc's gio benitez is here with that story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. this morning we are hearing from that b.a.s.e. jumper himself in an interview recorded right before his death. he was jumping from an altitude of 8,200 feet when it went horribly wrong. this morning, the death of yet another american b.a.s.e. jumper caught on camera. abc news will not show you the full video, but this is ian flanders struggling with his parachute. it becomes tangled during a jump. flanders never had a chance, dying on impact. the deadly jump, his second that day. a camera caught up with him moments after his first jump ended without incident.

>> climbing here is amazing. the climbing potential is awesome. >> reporter: the 37-year-old from southern california was excited about this new cliff event in turkey. it was his first trip to the country. >> this village is gorgeous. the people have been very friendly, very hospitable. it's been great. >> reporter: he completed thousands of successful sky dives and b.a.s.e. jumps like this jump off a cliff on a bicycle. he even had a successful jump right before the deadly accident. >> ian flanders was known as a technician, as somebody who was extremely safe and careful. >> reporter: flanders and his fellow extreme athletes jump off mountains, soar through valleys and even hurtle off skyscrapers. flanders now joining an estimated 10 to 15 b.a.s.e. jumpers a year who are killed during their adrenaline rush. just this may famous b.a.s.e. jumper and extreme athlete, dean potter, died when he jumped with a wingsuit at yosemite national park and in january, josh shepherd was killed jumping from

more laser attacks targeting commercial planes overnight. at least nine more laser strikes were reported on planes across the country last night. this dangerous trend continuing to grow with more than 30 reported in just the last week. most of them in the new york city area. one pilot reported being temporarily blinded. one man was arrested this week for targeting flights in dallas. and the other big we're tracking right now, story major wildfires scorching thousands of acres in two popular vacation spots. in napa valley wind-driven flames exploding overnight threatening hundreds of homes prompting evacuations. cell phone video capturing some of the frightening first moments of that blaze sparked by a car fire on the side of the road and in montana's glacier national park, frantic visitors scrambling to flee a growing wildfire. abc's kayna whitworth is there. kayna. >> reporter: paula, good morning to you. this fire exploded so quickly that some families were forced to abandon their cars along the

main road through glacier national park, and you can see that is closed now but this is their peak tourism season. nearly 700,000 visitors came to the park last july. but with these prime fire conditions, it's a different summer. the reynolds creek fire doubled in size in the first 24 hours. there are several evacuation orders in place and they've already lost a historic barn. and, paula, today they planned on sending helicopters high into the mountains to look for backpackers that might be stranded above the fire. >> all right, kayna, thank you. we know you'll be tracking this story all day. and new information now about the woman found dead in a texas jail cell. sandra bland's sister says she knew nothing about a previous suicide attempt by her sister or a history of depression. it comes after authorities released jail documents indicating bland had tried to kill herself last year as the family expresses outrage over the dash cam video showing bland's traffic stop spiraling out of control. those forms are raising questions about why bland was left alone in her cell.

and donald trump is taking his campaign to the u.s./mexico border today discussing immigration policy in laredo, texas, in the wake of his controversial comments about mexicans. now, trump leads the republican pack and says if the party does not treat him right during the primaries, well, he is ready to launch a third party campaign. meantime, potential trouble for hillary clinton. she is now trailing three of her republican rivals in the swing states of virginia, colorado, as well as iowa. and a violent confrontation between airline passengers all caught on tape. look at this. an argument turning into a brawl on a flight between china and russia. at least one passenger was allegedly drunk. others used tape and seat belts -- look at this -- to restrain him. he was detained by police when that flight landed. i guess there's all kind of uses for those seat belts. right? and now a consumer alert. ikea is recalling 27 million chests and dressers because they may tip over and crush children. two toddlers died last year when the furniture fell on them. four were injured.

time for "heat index." t.j. maxx facing a new lawsuit accused of miss leading customers. becky worley has the details. >> you can go to t.j. maxx and have it all for up to 50% off department store prices. >> reporter: t.j. maxx, the price reduction giant that sells itself on being one of the best bargains in the business. but this morning the discount dealer under fire after two individuals filed a proposed class action lawsuit against t.j. maxx claiming it's using deceptive comparative prices to trick its customers into mistakenly believing they're saving specific and substantial amounts on name brand items. consumers now questioning the

accuracy of those compare at prices. in a statement to abc news, t.j. maxx says, "we tell our customers what we mean by compare at prices. transparency is important to us and integrity is ingrained in our culture. beyond that we do not comment on r pending legislation." >> what this case is argue inging is something that they should be more clear. that the average consumer may not see those signs and, in fact, will be looking at this price tag and not really understanding what that price that is compared at actually means. >> reporter: we decided to check it out for ourselves at this t.j. maxx in san jose. their compare at signage posted right at the door but the price behind this michael kors purse not so clear. the t.j. maxx tag says compare at $328, but the manufacturer has its own tag with a suggested price of 228, and when i search online, i find it for way under the compare at price.at both macy's and neiman-marcus.

in our brief visit to one store, most of the compare at prices seemed appropriate. but some weren't. this five-pack of men's undershirts says compare at $30. but a quick check online found them for $19.99 on macy's website, the same price as at t.j. maxx teaching us that being a maxxinista could save you money. >> self-made. >> reporter: but doing your own price comparisons may be the best choice. for "good morning america," becky worley, abc news, san jose. >> thanks to becky for that. i'm here with shopping expert lisa lee freeman. now this actually has a name what happens here. it's called price anchoring and t.j. maxx isn't the only one doing it. >> oh, no, it's a very common trick that stores use. they give you reference points or one reference point and to show you what a great deal you're getting. sometimes it can be deceptive. for example, the compare at is one example of that. but they also use crossouts. let me show you, so, for example, they cross out the

original price, and then they show you the sale price, and you think, wow, what a great deal and whether it's legit or not, you think, fabulous and you snap it up. another example is goldilocks pricing where they want you to buy the -- spend the $59 in this case so they give you a high price that maybe you don't want to spend that much, they give you a cheap price that is too bare bones and steers you to the $59. >> what other head games do these stores play? >> well, another trick is multiple unit pricing. they say. for example, you need to buy ten to get the $10 deal but in many cases you only need to buy one to get the $1 deal. another example is limited quantities. for example, they say five per customer to get the $3, and you think, my gosh, i can only buy five, so you end up buying all five to get the great deal and so you end up buying more, not less. >> even if you didn't need five. >> that's right. >> okay so you have this information. what should shoppers do when they head to the store? >> to protect yourself bring your cell phone with you, your smartphone.

i sort of feel like maureen is the front line for billy in a sport that can be really brutal and not always you know not everyone has his best interests in mind so i think -- i think of her as the front line for him and she's so fiercely protective of her family and making sure that he gets in and out alive without too many of the wrong kinds of punches. >> yeah and it's just when you're watching it it's so real. it's so authentic, a testament to you and jake and all the other actors in the film but how did you turn into maureen, the tough streets of hell's kitchen. >> right. -- >> do you know much about the boxing world. >> i didn't when i started out which was part of the draw to this. so i sort of talked to some families of boxers and spent a little time in the ring myself. >> really. >> trying to you know just get a feel for it. just how physically grueling it is and just to understand a little what jake himself was going through because he was really you know putting

himself through it every day and training twice a day. >> what was it like watching him get hit -- you were filming those scenes they were real. >> right. yeah, yeah it was -- well, it was interesting because i had to play this woman that has been watching her husband get hit for 20 years, you know but i for me rachel was all brand new so i remember being in the front row with 50 and, you know -- jake's team and jake got actually hit in the face and we all went ooh! and i was like no that's not what my character would do. has to be cool and tough. it's like whatever. >> the other beautiful, beautiful part of this story is euna lawrence and the ree relationship the three of you. >> she's just such a special, special person. she's just wise beyond her years and, you know has such an emotional wisdom and she killed me in this film. i knew it was coming and she brought me to tears i think
