remain outside the fire zone. they left empty roads and wide open gates so that firefighters can get in if needed. this is an old drill for them. >> the saddest part for me is all the wild life that gets killed and injured. >> reporter: the wragg fire began yesterday afternoon and tore through 500 acres in the first hour and now it is in the 7,000 acre range. all day cal fire has been concerned about a return of the winds. >> today is going to be the telling factor really. >> reporter: they have not been as bad as yesterday allowing an arial assault by three tankers and ten helicopters. watched it all from his mountain top. he went down to meet daughter lynn, who handed off supplies at the road block. >> it's okay until you start seeing flames because it is only one way in and one way out of my parents' house at the bottom of the road. >> reporter: are you worried? >> yes. >> when you can't do much other than watch and wait it feels better to do all you can.

for now joe and his wife are safe at their house. they are still watching that fire burn across the valley. joe told us his power is out but now he has fuel for at least eight hours. let's hope he doesn't need another delivery tomorrow. live west of winters, wayne freedman abc 7 news. thank you. abc 7 news was at the fire station in santa rosa as crews loaded up air tankers with fire retardant. the tankers made 45 stops yesterday, more than 50000 gallons of fire retardant. today heavy smoke is hampering visibility. half as many planes have been making drops. >> a lot of the terrain is inaccessible so aircraft are highly effective in helping that until we can gain access to this. >> one of two helping fight the wragg fire. several bay area teams are on the fire lines.

this left station 7 in san francisco this morning to get to work on that fire. >> southern marin firefighters expected to be deployed for up to 14 days. >> firefighters from almeida county left from a staging area this morning. crews have come from as far away as san diego to help battle the flames. let's go back live to sky 7 hd over the fire. you can still see the smoke coming off of it. the area around the fire line is considered horse country and evacuations became complicated when an entire ranch was told to get out. >> cornell barnard continues our live team coverage with the story. >> a lot of neighbors stepping up to help tonight 24 hours ago this facility was completely empty. it is full of four legged evacu evacuees from the fire.

>> back in the horse business after closing years ago. today he is reopening the stalls to a lot of animals in need. >> if i can help i will help. >> reporter: saw the flames at the wragg fire bearing down on homes and ranches and scary images like this. horses and cattle left to fend for themselves as flames got dangerously close. >> i love animals and i was not going to let the horses get burned up in the fire when i have the facilities to get them out of there. hours later horse owner and fire vacu evac we showed up. the move took all night. >> it was very stressful but some of them are yearlings and we have a baby and they had never been in a trailer before. >> reporter: everyone made it just fine giving hess time to breathe. her ranch remains safe for now. what does it mean knowing your animals are safe?

>> it means everything. >> reporter: he says he has room for a lot more animals. >> i will put anything up. i have room for dogs, cats. if they can put them in the stall have at it. the animal shelter is taking care of dog and cat bording tonight. so far not a big demand but ernie says the horses can stay here as long as they want. the charge? it's free. >> very nice. thanks very much. breaking news this evening. another fire spreading quickly. it started this afternoon at about 2 p.m. highway 50 is closed in both directions from pollack pines to myers both north and south sides of highway 50 are under voluntary evacuations. this video posted on twitter by abc affiliate in sacramento shows the new superscooper, a plane that can pick up 1,600 gallons of water in 12 seconds.

we reported on that technology the other day. here is a live look at the fire. there are mandatory evacuations for strawberry. the fire is reportedly burning about 60 acres so far. if you see smoke and you are in the area where it is safe to send photo and video post them on social media. only do that if it is safe to do so. and meteorologist sandhya patel has been checking on our weather all afternoon. she is live outside with more on the firefighting conditions. >> as we take a look at conditions in the area you will notice that the temperature at this hour is 72 degrees. it is cooling down a bit but it is definitely on the breezy side. winds gusting to 17 miles per hour. that is not going to help those firefighters. here near the lake berryessa area the wragg fire it's really the wind that is increasing over the last few hours. 77 right now. winds out of the south southwest to 12 gusting to 21 miles per

hour. we will continue to see the increase in the wind conditions through this afternoon and evening hours before things die down. i will be back with a look at local weather in just a few minutes. we have new video this evening in the investigation of the shooting of hayward police sergeant scott lunger. the police department released this surveillance video. that's a car police would like to locate. it was last seen in east oakland shortly after the shooting. the video was recorded near 107th avenue and beverly sheet street not far from the suspect's home. investigators would like to question the driver of the car. the vehicle is described as light colored four door sedan. that suspect is supposed to be transferred to jail today. he is being treated for gun shot wounds at highland hospital in oakland. sergeant lunger died after he was shot during a traffic stop in hayward. earlier this afternoon dozens of hayward police officers and other bay area law enforcement

officers escorted sergeant lunger's hearse to the funeral home. it was obviously a very emotional procession. people in the community came out to show their respect for this well-loved sergeant. sky 7 hd was overhead as the casket arrived at chapel of the chimes in hayward. sergeant lunger's funeral will be a week from today at 10:00 a.m. an neighborhood church. it will be open to the public. a man suspected of killing six people was arraigned in a modesto courtroom today. martin martinez suspected of killing dr. amanda cruz and four others last weekend but today's charges were for a toddler who died last fall. >> reporter: because martinez is already charged with murder of christopher ripley prosecutors can take their time filing charges against him for the mass murder that happened here last

weekend. martin martinez appeared in a modesto courtroom wearing a striped jail jump suit. he said a few words in court acknowledging his name and birthday before his attorney entered a plea in the death of 2-year-old christopher ripley. >> he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. >> reporter: christopher died from injuries sustained while in martinez' care last october. according to the criminal complaint martinez abused the boy so severely the toddler died a few days later. >> she said that he had an accident. >> reporter: a patient of cruz. >> she had just come back to work from her son passing away and she just had her baby. she said that i had my new baby now so i'm really happy and i'm

a san jose state university football player has been suspended after being attacked by a teammate. we are hearing from parents who say their son was the victim of that attack. abc 7 news reporter has more from san jose. >> reporter: a frustrated mother is trying to make sense of an altercation involving her son. >> my concern was getting hit. >> sophomore chad miller says he was struck in the head by a fellow teammate. >> the way it happened it shouldn't have happened like that. >> reporter: miller says he wuz was trying to motivate reps but one took offense with his tone attacking him at his dormitory on campus. his father was stunned. >> when he told me the news i couldn't take it. i just couldn't take it to hear something like that could

happen. >> reporter: two of the bones in his face were fractured. doctors say he will make a full recovery and can return to the field in a month. >> the brain was not damaged. spine and the neck was not damaged. >> reporter: the athletics department declined our request and haven't released the name of the alleged attacker but told us he has been suspended. campus police say he faces potential charges including assault with a deadly weapon. chad's parents hopes this serves as a learning experience. >> when i was playing sports i think it still stays the same now what happens on the field stays on the field whether you fight, argue, push each other, that stays on the field. >> reporter: the family keeping their spirits up for the sake of the team. >> we are going to stay positive. we are christians. we put it in god's hands. pray on it. >> reporter: the case remains under investigation. campus police will forward it to the district attorney's office

sometime next week. u.s. house approved legislation today to punish sanctuary cities that failed to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. this is the first congressional response after the murder of kate steinle in san francisco's pier 14. the bill sponsored by duncan hunter would penalize cities that refuse to cooperate with federal detainer requests. if the senate sends the bill to the president he is expected to veto it. fast food workers say they can't afford to live there. >> fast food workers will make $15 an hour in new york so we understand that things happen in new york they can happen in san jose, california. >> abc 7 news was at story road as they rallied today for a higher minimum wage. new york state just approved a $15 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers.

the current minimum wage is $10.30. san francisco and oakland pay $12.25. just this week the university of california set minimum wage for workers at $15 an hour. during a west coast visit vice president joe biden says he thinks the federal minimum wage should be raised to $12 an hour. this afternoon the vice president was visiting. the company makes inexpensive portable diagnostic blood tests. vice president biden talked about why progress in health care is so important to him. >> my son just fought valiantly for seven years with a cancer of the brain. >> beau biden fought cancer for three years. he passed away in may.

motorcycle maker is recalling 185,000 bikes. the company says because of a saddle bag problem. apparently the bags can fall off. the recall includes models from the 2014 and 2015 years. harly davidson will replace that part for free. a break through tonight from consumer reports. the agency has been testing laundry detergents for years and is seeing what it is calling the best detergent it test said. michael finney takes a look at what they found. >> when consumer reports test laundry detergents she doesn't let them off the hook easily. each is judged on how well it removes tough stains. >> we use swatches that are highly saturated with stains such as blood wine, ring around the collar chocolate ice cream and grass. >> reporter: whisk, oxy clean and one each from sams club and

look at this absolutely gorgeous weather. >> it is a bit on the breezy to windy side. right now out here it's bright and sunny and feels so good. i spent years out here in the dead of winter where it is chilly and when it has been raining and nothing like that right now even though we can use the rain. let's check out live doppler 7 hd. it is quite mild temperatures in the mid 60s in san francisco. coast is clear as you can tell from live doppler 7 hd. the wind is up, part of the reason why we are seeing nice clearing. gusts to 30 at sfo. 24 in san carlos and 21 in fairfield. from our east bay hills camera nothing but blue skies. mid 60s in san francisco. oakland 69. san jose 71 degrees. and near 80 in morgan hill. our highs so far today low 60s to the low 80s. cooler than average but i don't

think too many people are complaining. you can see that there are no clouds or fog around. 80 in santa rosa. low 70s napa. 77 degrees in livermore. here is what you are going to be seeing more of in the overnight hours. fog coming back in through the golden gate. we call it low clouds and fog. below average through sunday. as far as temperatures are concerned and hot weather returning next week. we will get our summer heat but not immediately. here is why. it is one trough coming through bringing us cooler than average conditions. another one follows. this pattern holds through the weekend and then things start to turn around. sunday the trough going through as we head towards monday tuesday, things start to change. high pressure starts to build back westward from the desert southwest going to bring us the summer heat next week particularly tuesday and wednesday. average highs for livermore 89 degrees running cooler than normal right on through the weekend and then the
