>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 26th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meet frances dinglasan, in this morning for lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning everyone. it's currently 58 in san francisco for the marathon runners. today is going to be similar to yesterday. temperatures are slightly below normal. to give you an idea here's a look at some of the airports. sfo today we expect to hit 70. normal is 72.

we are just two degrees below. right here normal at the oakland airport and in san jose. our high is 79 for today. just 4 degrees below normal for this time of year. now we do have a big heat wave. temperatures really coming up midweek. i'll let you know when and where and also i will have your neighborhood forecast coming up. carolyn. >> frances, thank you. we start this morning with developing news from berkeley. part of eastbound interstate 80 is closed because of a railroad bad traffic accident. this is a live look at the freeway at the ashby avenue overcrossing. the highway patrol saying the crash involved at least two cars and a big rig. some of the vehicles ended up on the right-hand shoulder of the freeway near that overcrossing. we are learning they may have to inspect the overpass because fire crews on the scene are concerned about the structural integrity of the crossing since

the accident. two lanes will be closed at least for the next few hours. we will follow the story throughout the morning. now on to the search for a san francisco teacher who has been missing since friday. 46-year-old ed cavanaugh is a popular instructor at downtown high school. that's a continuation school in the city. he's been missing since he parted with a friend while dirt biking. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has more. >> downtown high school is where students come from graduation is out of reach. >> it's a very special place. >> he was an extraordinary teacher. >> he's gruff on the outside but a marshmallow inside. >> ed cavanaugh's combination of hard and soft has endeared him to nearly everyone inside classroom 12 and beyond. he has led more than 20 ten-day backpacking trips with students. all the more reason why his

disappearance on a trail is so confusing. >> i know he has all the skills to survive in the wilderness. my only concern is he's a diabetic. >> his sister said he would never ride without insulin on him. the question is whether or not he has enough. >> it just doesn't feel like a real experience. >> word of what now feels like a bad dream, spread between teachers. >> we are just counting the hours until we see him. >> he came in day in and day out and was willing to do whatever it took to these kids, a lot of them who quit on school, to get them back into school. >> which is why no one is giving up on ed. >> ed, we can't wait for you to come back so we can hear your extraordinary story. >> one that ed's teaching family expects him to share with students when they return next month. abc7 news. >> a one-mile strip of highway 1 in pacifica is open this morning after it was closed yesterday following a head-on crash.

it happened just after 6:30 yesterday. two people are hurt, and police are calling it a major injury crash. two cars were involved. both of badly damaged. all lanes were shut down in both directions until about 4:00 this morning by crestview drive. a small plane went down at the san carlos airport last night. the redwood city fire department tweeted this picture. you see the plane in a slight nosedive position in tall grass. the faa said there was only one person on board and that person fortunately was not hurt. happening today a special honor for fallen hayward police officer scott lunger, the 48-year-old lunger was shot and killed last wednesday morning during a traffic stop. the man accused of killing him faces charges that make him eligible for the death penalty. baseball was a passion of lunger's. he played in a senior league in the east bay, the tri-valley a's.

the a's will hold a special tribute to him before their game in granada high school in livermore. a 15-year-old veteran of the force, he will be laid to rest with full honors thursday. because so many are expected to attend, his funeral will be at oracle arena. it is at 10:00 a.m. and it is open to the public. you can offer your condolences by sharing this badge on social media. you will find it on our abc7 news facebook page or twitter and instagram under abc7newsbayarea. >> there's a permanent memorial to a fall he officer in san leandro. it's on hayes street. dan nieme way.

it's on the tenth anniversary of that officer's death. dozens of his colleagues celebrated his life and honored him at a special ceremony. the police shared what the officer wrote about what it meant to be an officer. >> we can't save the world. in fact, i doubt the world even wants to be saved. if, however, just once in a while we can make someone a little safer, leave someone just a little better off than we found them, doesn't that count for something? >> nieme left behind a wife and two children. the man who shot him is on death row. a wildfire continues to burn at this hour just north of interstate 80 in novato and placer counties. the fire started around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. the fire has grown to had thousand acres. there are mandatory evacuations. 600 firefighters are doing everything they can to stop those flames. >> we have a very large response on the fire with conditions so dry. we are hitting it with everything we have. a large air tanker, as well, since it is difficult to get access on the ground.

we have couldn'ters making water drops, doing everything we can to slow down this fire. >> the investigators are trying to find a white jeep wrangler with a white top and no doors seen leaving the area when the fire started. there's good news out of napa county this morning. all mandatory evacuations at the fire near the lake have been lifted. that fire, which began wednesday, has burned 6900 acres and it is now 55% contained. residents had questions at a town hall meeting. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana was there. >> through the week the rag fire raged, consuming hundreds of acres in the first day. but now crews have a better handle on the fire. the good news of the week is there have been no injuries to citizens and the structure loss was very minimal. all the residences are still standing. >> the fire chief told us crews are still cutting a containment

line along the southern edge of the fire, but all the residents were allowed to return home. fire trucks are still on the ground patrolling for hotspots but now the evacuations are clear and a lot of the residents are going over lessons learned from the fire. they fielded a number of questions, including concerns about drinking water, how evacuations can be carried out better and concerns about communication. when evacuations were called early in the week, not everyone got the reverse 911 call because the system doesn't recognize cell phone numbers. one had a solution based on a fire last year. >> we did a robo call system. >> another challenge, evacuating livestock and lessons learned helped to get animals moved fast. >> i must have seen 50 trailers in like a two or three hour time span. it was amazing how everyone got together. and i know there are people moving cattle.

>> fire team leaders are concerned about the rest of the fire season because lapped scape -- landscape is parched from the ongoing drought. that's why they repeated an important message to residence. create and maintain defensible spaces around homes. abc7 news. happening now, runners are a half-hour into the san francisco marathon. here's a live look at the race. here's a live look. you see the path where the race begins and ends. this year's marathon is more important to serious runners because it is now sanctioned as a usa track and field qualifier race for the 2016 olympic marathon trials. again, the race ends at the embarcadero and mission streets after winding its way through the city. showing you right there. more than 25,000 runners.

they will end back where they started on the embarcadero. good luck, everyone. a chaotic scene in a quiet tokyo neighborhood after a plane crash. three people killed and five others injured. houses at the crash site burned to the ground. it's unclear what caused the plane to go down. the neighborhood is about 500 yards from a local airport used by small aircraft. and scary moments at the cosmopolitan hotel in las vegas after a fire broke out on one of the pool decks. abc7 news reporter matt keller was there and tweeted this video of black smoke billowing into the air. fire crews evacuated the hotel and shut down nearby streets for several hours. abc news reporter alex perez has the latest. >> a towering inferno on the las vegas strip. parts of the cosmopolitan hotel up in flames.

one of the trendiest and luxurious hotels in the country. >> evacuate all the floors above the pool. >> smoke billowing across the desert sky as firefighters battle the blaze. >> we have a rapid spread on the synthetic cabana covers. all the palm trees are on fire. >> the cause of the blaze remains under investigation but "the las vegas sun" reports hotel employees suspect the fire may have been started by a cigarette. it started on the 14th floor pool deck and quickly consumed the cabanas. that was at 12:15 p.m.. witnesses in shock. some capturing the whole scene on their cell phones. >> oh, my gosh, it's so bad. >> there's something serious going on. it's igniting. >> there were 100 people just running from the hotel. >> the hotel, a magnet for celebrities, no one for nonstop night live and sleek design. there were no life-threatening injuries.

it took about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control. the cause is still under investigation. that was alex perez reporting. officials say guests are staying at the hotel. new this morning, president obama wrapping up a historic visit to kenya, a country that considers him a local son. president obama delivered an address to thousands at an indoor arena in nairobi. the president touched on the issues of guy rights, treatment of women and urged kenyans to embrace social change. he also thanked the country for its hospitality. >> i am proud to be the first american president to come to kenya. [applause] >> and, of course, i'm the first kenyan american to be president of the united states. [applause] >> the president heads to ethiopia next the first time a sitting president has been to that east african country. president obama will hold talks

you see more of the marathon runners who made their way to the ferry building all the way out to the golden gate brimming. the low clouds cover just above the towers, as well. its currently 58 in santa rosa and napa 59. low 60s right now in concord and in livermore. this time we are showinga shot of the bay and the bay bridge with the gray skies. so we've got morning clouds once again. some spotty drizzle possible mainly near the coast. mild to warm in terms of temperatures. but the breeze will pick up this afternoon. then possible record heat midweek. things are going to get hot around here. the radar satellite image shows the upper level trough. now this is going to go south. that will bring us the increased winds this afternoon. so expect breezy condition later on. and that on shore flow will keep things slightly below normal temperatures for today in some locations. but it's still going to be warm in san jose. 79.

88 for the gilroy garlic festival. look for 84 in los gatos. and menlo park 78 for you. very comfortable. milbrae, cooler at 73 degrees. notice how the clouds kind of cling to the coast where it's going to be breezy as well. 63 in pacifica, as well as in daly city. downtown san francisco 67 degrees. we will find low 80s through most of santa rosa sonoma and napa and even some low 90s in cloverdale and lake port. also for the east bay, upper 60s to mid-70s. very similar to yesterday. the warmest spots will be antioch and brentwood in the upper 80s. 82 in san ramon. here's what you need to prepare for. we have this area of low pressure being replaced by high pressure with this offshore flow. that land-to-sea breeze will create very hot weather inland. 100 degrees plus. and near record-breaking temperatures. so, for example, in livermore we are slightly below normal again

cloud cover for most of us. from the live camera you can see it's clear over parts of the bay area and inland areas. inland east bay will see plenty of sunshine this afternoon with temperatures in the 80s to upper 80 along the coast and in san francisco where the clouds will kind of cling around and stick around most of the day. staying cloudy but we could see partial clearing later on. temperatures in the 60s and around the bay becoming sunny. comfortable once again we have a big warmup on the way. i'll let you know when you will see triple-digit heat coming up. carolyn. >> thank you very much frances. a few more verbal jabs from republican presidential candidate donald trump. his target this time, hillary clinton. trump was in iowa where a standing-room-only crowd waited over two hours in the heat to hear him. he took a shot at clinton and accusations of her use of private e-mail while secretary of state. intelligence investigators in washington said this past week that secret government

airport, they get to rent your car out to other drivers while you are away. >> i was one of their first customers. the first couple of years it was fine. >> but misty now calls herself a former customer because of this unpleasant surprise. >> i was told the person who rented it as part of the car share was delayed in his return and that they were contacting him. >> san francisco police finally found the car littered with clothing, pillows and blankets. >> looked like a wild party had been thrown in there with the cigarette butts, ashes everywhere and hypodermic needles in the glove box. >> was the vehicle stolen by the person who rent it had? >> we believe so, yes. >> the management filed the police report. >> i did a simple search of the man's name on the police report john loin and that name pops up multiple times for car thefts and crimes. >> do you do a background check? >> we do not. >> he says the thefts are incredibly rare. >> to my knowledge it's only happened a handful of times in

they will go and now the ball is in her court. in the newsroom. jonathan bloom, abc7 news. >> every dog has its day, and in southern california it was the day for corgis. the dogs and their owners nearly took over a section of huntington beach. back in april near 650 corgis participated in corgi beach day, and there were at least that many yesterday. there's also a serious side to the fun. t-shirts and stickers were sold to raise money to benefit a local rescue that helps find homes for that breed of dog. still ahead, are you driving on recalled tires? of a system to make tires scannable to alert everyone of recalls. >> neal is with the san jose-based company alien technology, a provider of rfid technology. some companies, he says, already have scannable tires. >> a lot of companies, they are either embedding an rfid device inside of the tire or on the outside wall of the tire >> but the rubber manufacturer's association said it's too early

filled with colors. it's the annual kite festival at the park. you can go there and watch them we've their kites along the shoreline. there will be choreographed team events and kite battles. if you are not one to sit on the sidelines, there is a kite-making course and kite-knowing lessons. the event continues through today. they should have enough wind to get those up and flying. >> yeah, definitely again today. we will see the westerly winds pick up to 10 to 20 miles an hour in the afternoon at berkeley. good kite-flying weather. and for now a look at live doppler 7hd. showing us just some of the morning low clouds we are contending with. a typical pattern for this time of the year. you will see the low clouds from mt. tam. and you will see the sunshine if you are at this elevation, as well. temperatures are starting to climb up into the low 60s in oakland, mountain view and in san jose. in san francisco eats currently

58 degrees, as we take a look at the golden gate bridge camera. you see some of the san francisco marathon runners making their way back. novato 57. fairfield 59 degrees. a beautiful shot of lake tahoe where it's currently 41 degrees. here's a hint of the week to come. in tahoe this week we will see upper 80s possible. get ready for that. you know what that means here. we have morning clouds spotty drizzle. a mild to warm day with a breezy afternoon and then possible record heat midweek. and i'll show you where exactly. so here's the forecast animation. 7:00 this morning basically we've got the cloud cover spilling into the bay. you know the drill. possibly some drizzle along the coast. and then by lunchtime pulling back to the coast but sticking around all around many we will have a range of temperatures from 60s at the coast once again to mostly 70s around the bay and even upper 80s inland.

your highs for today in your neighborhood, in san jose look for 79. 84 in livermore. antioch 88. even some low 90s. clear lake at 92. napa very nice at 89 degrees. and 64 in have moon bay. if you are headed to the a's and giants game this afternoon at 1:05, you will still need your sunscreen and your shades because we will get some sunshine this afternoon. the u.v. index still very high and temperatures mainly near the mid-60s. climbing up to 67 degrees by the time the game ends. a lot of folks headed to the gilroy garlic festival as well. cooler today but still quite warm. hitting 88 by this afternoon and pretty comfortable by 7:00 this evening at 78 degrees. also overnight lows once again upper 50s to low 60s. cloud cover moving in overnight. around the state you will see numbers very similar to yesterday. 96 in fresno.

bad combination for the a's yesterday. no d.h. in national league parks, which means their pitcher is forced to hit. that can become a real disadvantage, especially when the team you are facing has the best-hitting pitcher in baseball, madison bumgarner. giants-a's, at&t park. scoreless game until the third. bumgarner at the plate. smacks a 3-2 pitch from chris bassett into the bleachers. his third homer of the season, ninth of his career. solo shot, giving himself a 1-0 lead. a's would counter in the fourth. josh, a double down the line. scoring from first. that will tie the game at one. that was madison bumgarner's only mistake in seven innings of work. he earned the win thanks to matt duffy. this drives in two and the a's 2-1 in the ninth.
