the upper 70s. we have a big heat wave on the way, and i'll let you know when you can expect that and where you will see triple digit heat. carolyn. >> frap ses, thank you. >> question l. start with with develop news. an officer involved shooting. abc7 news it told it happened on north macdonald road. that's the street that runs along the perimeter of the airport grounds. we are now work to go gather additional details and we will bring them to you as soon as we learn more. >> there are shut down lanes on 101 this morning but they are back open after a fatal collision near south san francisco. police arrived open keen south of the parkway off-ramp just before 5:30. they found a pedestrian lying in the number one lane. the victim had been struck by at least one car. chp officers said a taxi driver told them he hit the person.

lanes were closed for about two hours. the accident is now under investigation. >> and developing news from berkeley where part of eastbound eastbound interstate 80 remains closed at this hour because of a traffic accident earlier this morning. this is a live look at the freeway at the ashby avenue overcrossing. authorities say a truck slammed head-on into the oliver crossing. structural engineers have been asked to inspect the overpass because fire crews are now concerned about the integrity of the crossing. the chp said two lanes will be closed until noon. the truck driver has been hospitalized. also this morning, the search for a san francisco teacher who has been missing for more than a week.

46-year-old ed cavanaugh is a popular instructor at downtown high school. that's a continuation school in the city. he's been missing since he parted with a friend while dirt biking. abc7 news reporter melanie has more. >> downtown high school is where students come from graduation is or seems out of reach. >> it's a very special place. >> he was an extraordinary teacher. he's very unique. >> he's gruff on the outside but a marshmallow inside. >> ed cavanaugh's combination of hard and soft has endeared him to nearly everyone inside classroom 12 and beyond. he has led more than 20 ten-day backpacking trips with students. all the more reason why his disappearance on a trail is so confusing. >> i know he has all the skills to survive in the wilderness. my only concern is he's a diabetic. >> his sister said he would never ride without insulin on him. the question is whether or not he has enough. >> it just doesn't feel like a real experience.

>> word of what now feels like a bad dream, spread between teachers by text. >> we are just counting the hours until we see him. >> he came in day in and day out and was willing to do whatever it took to these kids, a lot of them who quit on school, to get them back into school. >> which is why no one is giving up on ed. >> ed, we can't wait for you to come back so we can hear your extraordinary story. >> one that ed's teaching family expects him to share with students when they return next month. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> happening today, today, a special honor for fallen police officer scott lunger is just a short time away. he was shot and killed last wednesday during a traffic spot. the man accused of killing him faces charges that make him eligible for the death penalty. baseball was a passion of lunger's. he played in a senior league in the east bay, the tri-valley a's. the a's will hold a special

tribute to him before their game in granada high school in livermore. sergeant lunger, a 15-year-old veteran of the force, he will be laid to rest with full honors thursday. because so many are expected to attend, his funeral will be at oracle arena. it is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and it is open to the public. you can offer your condolences by sharing this badge on social media. you will find it on our abc7 news facebook page or twitter and instagram under abc7newsbayarea. a wildfire continues to burn at this hour just north of interstate 80 in novato and placer counties. the fire started around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. just west of alta. the fire is just 5% contained. officials originally said it burned 4,000 acres. there are mandatory evacuations.

nearly 800 firefighters are on the line doing everything they can to stop the flames. >> we have a very large response on the fire with conditions so dry. we are hitting it with everything we have. a large air tanker, as well, since it is difficult to get access on the ground. we have a lot of air tankers making water drops and couldn'tters, doing everything we can to slow down the fire. >> the investigators are trying to find a white jeep wrangler with no top and a white top and no doors seen leaving the area when the fire started. there's good news out of napa county this morning. all mandatory evacuations at the wragg fire near the lake have been lifted. that fire, which began wednesday, has burned 6900 acres and it is now 55% contained. residents had questions at a town hall meeting. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana was there. >> through the week the rag fire raged, consuming hundreds of acres in the first day.

but now crews have a better handle on the fire. the good news of the week is there have been no injuries to citizens and the structure loss was very minimal. >> happening now, sorry about that given there. happening now the 38th annual san francisco marathon race is over for some, but it's still on for others. >> three two one! [cheers and applause] >> runners set off bright and early at 5:30 this morning in cool and dark weather. we have a live look from our abc7 golden gate camera. the final wave of people running the second half marathon left a few minutes ago from golden gate park. this year's marathon has more important to serious runners because ice now sanctioned as a usa track and field qualifier race for the 2016 olympic team trials. race ends at the embarcadero and mission street after winding its

t >> back to the wragg fire burning and the community meeting held for evacuated residents. here been is abc7 news reporter sergio quintana's story. >> the fire chief told us crews are still cutting a containment line along the southern edge of

the fire but all roads were reopened and residents were allowed to return home. fire trucks are still on the ground patrolling for hotspots but now the evacuations are clear and a lot of the residents are going over lessons learned from the fire. fire team leaders fielded a number of questions, including concerns about drinking water, how evacuations can be carried out better and concerns about communication. when evacuations were called early in the week, not everyone got the reverse 911 call because the system doesn't recognize cell phone numbers. one had a solution based on a fire last year. >> set up our own robo call system, a private one. it's relatively inexpensive. >> another challenge, evacuating livestock and lessons learned helped to get animals moved fast. >> i must have seen 50 trailers in like a two or three-hour time span. it was amazing how everyone got together. and i know there are people moving cattle. >> fire team leaders are concerned about the rest of the fire season because the landscape is parched from the ongoing drought.

that's why they repeated an residents. create and maintain defensible spaces around homes. abc7 news. a chaotic scene in a quiet tokyo neighborhood after a plane crash. three people killed and five others injured. houses at the crash site burned to the ground. it's unclear what caused the plane to go down. the neighborhood is about 500 yards from a local airport used by small aircraft. >> and we are following developing news from paris, where police opened fire on a car that tried to crash through a barrier at the tour de france cycling race. a police spokesperson said the car tried ramming barricades at the concord where the cyclists make their final celebratory lap. it appears the two occupants in the car escaped. no one else was injured. a large manhunt is underway right now. and scary moments at the cosmopolitan hotel in las vegas after a fire broke out on one of

the pool decks. abc7 news reporter matt keller was there and tweeted this video of black smoke billowing into the air. fire crews evacuated the hotel and shut down nearby streets for several hours. abc news reporter alex perez has the latest. >> a towering inferno on the las vegas strip. parts of the cosmopolitan hotel up in flames. one of the trendiest and luxurious hotels in the country. >> evacuate all the floors above the pool. >> smoke billowing across the desert sky as firefighters battle the blaze. >> we have a rapid spread on the synthetic cabana covers. all the palm trees are on fire. >> one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. the cause of the blaze remains under investigation but "the las vegas sun" reports hotel employees suspect the fire may have been started by a cigarette. it started on the 14th floor pool deck at 12:15 p.m. and

quickly consumed the cabanas and artificial trees. witnesses in shock. some capturing the whole scene on their cell phones. >> oh, my gosh, it's so bad. >> there's something serious going on. it's igniting. >> there were 100 people just running from the hotel. >> the hotel, a magnet for celebrities, known for nonstop night live and sleek design. there were no life-threatening injuries. it took about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control. the cause is still under investigation. that was alex perez reporting. officials say guests are staying at the hotel. new this morning, president obama has wrapped up a historic visit to kenya, a country that considers him a local son. president obama delivered an address to thousands at an indoor arena in nairobi. the president touched on the issues of guy rights, treatment of women and urged kenyans to embrace social change. he also thanked the country for its hospitality. >> i am proud to be the first american president to come to

kenya. [applause] >> and, of course, i'm the first kenyan american to be president of the united states. berkeley is blooming. the plant, nicknamed trudy, only blooms every few years and yesterday began opening. she puts on an odor that's reminiscent of rotting flesh, which is how it got the name "corpse flower." they will have extended viewing hours today and 9 to 7 so you can catch a whiff. and as you said, such a nice name for the plant that's stinky. >> you can call it little stinker, instead. >> well, today you cap find what you like, depending on where you go. live doppler hd showing us the clouds sticking around, spilling into parts of the bay right now. you can see some of the overcast conditions over the golden gate bridge. temperatures right now are starting to climb. so in san francisco it's still cool, 60 °. oakland 64. san jose 66. and morgan hill 59 degrees. but there is sunshine over

san jose with this live shot and in santa rosa 61. check out fairfield, 66 degrees and in concord and livermore it's currently 68 degrees. we will head to mt. tam to get above some of those low clouds. here's what you need to know. we have the morning clouds, but that will clear away by this afternoon. mild to warm conditions again. the breeze will pick up later on as well. possible record heat midweek. here's what is going on upstairs. the trough will push south and push through. that increases the on shore flow so we have the breezy afternoon, as well. temperatures just a little bit below normal in some locations. so it's still comfortable. check out san jose, 79 degrees. today 88 degrees for the gilroy garlic festival later on this afternoon. and we will find plenty of upper 70s through menlo park, palo alto, mountain view san mateo at 75. but, of course, at the coast is where we will see temperatures in the mid-to low 60s. 63 in daly city with cloud

cover. 67 downtown san francisco for the giants and a's game today. mild 80s through novato and napa with plenty of sunshine. comfortable for the kite festival in berkeley at 69. westerly breeze about 10 to 289 miles an hour. fremont hitting 75. look for upper 80s through antioch and brentwood and low 80s in san ramon and pleasanton. now here's the thing you need to know. midweek heat. the heat is on! this is going to replace the area of low pressure. the pressure is high, and that means when we have the land-to-sea breeze temperatures inland will reach about 100 degrees or even above midweek. we will look out for near record-breaking numbers and we will keep you posted on that. and that will slowly start to taper off toward the end of the week. here's an example. livermore average high 88. today we will be at 84.

recalled tires known to be subject to blowouts could be on the car you are driving. recall system doesn't work very well. but now there is a plan to fix it. "7 on your side" michael finney has been reporting on for almost a decade. he has an update. >> a scanner like this one to keep track of tires is what some see as an answer to an inefficient tire recall system. federal regulators estimate that 20 to 38 percent of all recalled tires are never taken off the road. some think a scanning system is certainly better than what we have now. >> it would sure be a time-saver, and it would be a lot more accurate. >> under the current system recall notices are sent via the mail. but he estimates two-thirds of tire manufacturers he deals with don't send out notices. he is forced to look up the information on a government data base.

>> i will just scroll through. you can see there's about 20 on each screen here. >> there are dozens of manufacturers, each with many models and with different tire identification numbers that are 12 digits long. >> there is some margin of error there. we could make a mistake in transposing one of those numbers. >> last year investigators take a church van overturned in florida after the tread separated from a recalled tire. two people were killed and 8 injured. this week the tire industry association came out in support of a system to make tires scannable to alert everyone of recalls. >> neil mitchell is with a san jose-based company, alien technology a provide are rifd technology. some companies, he says, already have scannable tires. >> a lot of companies, they are either embedding an rfid device inside of the tire or on the outside wall of the tire >> but the rubber manufacturer's association said it's too early to implement the system because the infrastructure is not in place.

this week berkeley skies are filled with colors. it's the annual kite festival at the park. you can go there and watch them we've their kites along the shoreline. there will be choreographed team events and kite battles. if you are not one to sit on the sidelines, there is a kite-making course and kite-flying lessons. the event continues through today. abc7 was at pedal fest. it's a festival for people

enjoying a lot of two-wheeled entertainment, live music and pedal-powered ice cream. it raises money for a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe, convenient and enjoyable biking for people in the east bay. >> those watching the bay bridge series yesterday saw a unique vehicle patrolling the waters off at&t park. the announcers definitely took notice. >> that's got to be the luckiest guy on the force right there. >> i want to be that guy. >> yeah, me, too. what is that thing? a new vehicle for the san francisco police. a lot of people saw it on tv and in person. melanie woodrow has more. >> i don't know what you call it. what would you call that thing? >> it kind of looks like robo cop. >> looks like some sort of batman. >> a jet ski that looks like it can convert to an atm. >> she got it right.

skies over the golden gate bridge with this live shot right now. they are starting to open up the lanes and you can see the live shot. looks like they are going to be changing the lane configuration, as well. san francisco 60 degrees. mountain through already at 67. and san jose sunny there with temperatures right near 66 degrees. here we are looking for mt. tam. and you see some of the cloud cover, but you also see some clearing there below. so here's what you can expect. we've got the morning clouds. that will clear by the afternoon. and then we will see mild to warm conditions cubs again with the breeze picking up. the sea breeze at about 10 to 20 miles an hour, and possible record heat midweek. i'll show you where and why it's going to get so hot. the radar satellite image shows the trough. it's going to go south. that increases the on shore flow so that's why temperatures are slightly below normal, and that will also mean the afternoon sea breeze will pick up as well. it's very typical for this time of year. now for today's highs, look for

numbers to be close to yesterday. concord 85 oakland 71 degrees. and check out half moon bay. it's going to be sweater weather there near 64 degrees. and you will see the sea breeze. and if you are headed to the a's and giants game today, you will still need the sunscreen. u.v. index will be high and sunnier conditions later on this afternoon. temperatures starting off at 64 degrees when the game starts and then ramping up to about 67 degrees. not too much change. also a lot of folks attending the gilroy garlic festival. it will be a little more comfortable today, hitting a high of 88 by 4:00 this afternoon and then 7:00 this evening cooling down to 78 degrees. be prepared for that. and bring some breath mint for your companion. here's a look at california highs. a lot of 90 as through the california valley. fresno at 96. sacramento 91.

stop was shot in the stomach near sfo. that incident happened just before 7:00 this morning. the suspect rammed what was later determined to be a stolen car into a light post. police say he then changed clothes, tried to carjack someone, then made his way to san bruno avenue. police chief greg suhr said according to witnesses the suspect advanced on the officers. >> one of the other officers could hear the suspect saying shoot me shoot me shoot me. a second round ensued. and the officer struck the suspect in what appears to be the abdomen. he goes down. officers responded to the seen and he's at the hospital in now what we believe to be serious but stable condition. >> that news conference happening just a few minutes ago. the chief said the officer will be placed on paid leave which is routine. the officer was not hurt in the incident. we will have more details tonight on abc7 news at 5:00.
