abc7 news starts right now with live, breaking news. >> that breaking news is in vallejo where redwood parkway is closed after a deadly shooting. the dresser -- the driver of this car lost control and slammed into three parked cars. police say somebody shot at the driver moments before the crash. he was pronounced dead at the scene. for more go to abc7 news bay area. good evening. now we have a warning from police. thieves are targeting cars and stealing anything of value. dozens have been hit since wednesday. the rash of thefts began on wednesday in the relatively safe community of moraga and continued this morning. lilian kim joins us with more. >> reporter: there has been no visible damage to any of the vehicles. no broken windows for

instance. moraga police believe the victims are leaving their car doors unlocked, but not everyone is convinced. >> when i got closer i noticed the contents of the glove come compartment were on the front seat. i knew we were broken into. >> jane is one of dozens of moraga residents who woke up with their cars broken into. there were no signs that anyone broke their way in. so they believe the items stolen everything from laptops to sunglasses are the results of owners not locking their vehicles. >> so you left it unlocked? >> i thought it was locked. >> you leave it unlocked? >> not anymore. >> he wok up to find the garage door open that same morning. nothing was taken from the garage. he assumes the thieves ran out of time. the same people are believed to have come back the next day to steal her car and she was certain it was locked. >> we made a big point of saying let's make sure it is

locked. we know it was locked. therefore i believe it was locked the night before as well. >> which leaves some believing this is a sophisticated operation and no one appears to be immune even sanders ranch a gated community that was targeted this morning. >> i don't think it was casual kids. to have so many cars hit at once it was quite a coordinated effort. >> moraga police are following up on lids and securing -- leads and securing video. lilian kim, abc7 news. an abc7 news viewer sent this video of a woman walking up to their home in hayward and taking a package from the front porch last night. police told us they took a report on this incident. it happened near montgomery and sunset boulevard. muni service in san francisco is back to normal after a suspicious briefcase on a platform stopped all of the trains. police closed down the church street station after 8:00.

businesses and people who live in the area were asked to stay inside as the bomb squad and bomb-sniffing dogs checked it out. they started running again about an hour ago. developing in santa cruz police are trying to find a missing 9-year-old girl. madison middleton disappeared. she was on a white scooter at the time and wearing a purple dress with black leggings and a helmet. and now we want to turn to the wildfires burning across california. firefighters are battling nearly a dozen fires in the state. here in the bay area the rag fire in napa and solano county has burned 6500 acres and it is 65% contained. right now hundreds of crews are focused on the lowell fire in nevada county that has burned 1500 acres and is 15% contained. >> it is a hard battle on the front lines of the lowell fire. >> very nasty and very hard to get into the canyon. very overgrown. >> we learned four firefighters suffered burn

injuries and had to be airlifted from the area. five planes and 14 helicopters were called in to help knockdown the flames. burning so hot you can see the fire from space. there aren't many hydrants in the area that is forcing them to truck up water from elsewhere. 1100 firefighters are working to protect about 2,000 structures and hundreds of people have been told to evacuate their homes. >> walking out when i actually said i am on the way out the door and wonder if i will see this again. >> those who knew the drill grabbed valuables first. >> things my father gave me before he passed away like his pocket watch. really momentos. >> the cause was not known. they were looking for a vehicle of interest, but now say that's no longer the case. >> three of the injured firefighters will likely be released from the hospital tonight. the fourth is at uc davis medical center with serious burns. strong winds fueled a small fire that destroyed a

couple of houses. the eight-10 acre fire started in the afternoon and the fire is now 90% contained. let's head to meteorologist drew tuma for a first check on weather and live doppler heavy sd. the heat will be moving in midweek and we are look to comfortable temperatures. 71 in oakland. 79 in san jose and fairfield. a warm high of 85 degrees. we will widen out the picture with highs in the 70s. you will look off to the east and a lot of 90s were achieved today and even 100 in dallas. that is the air mass that is moving in over the next couple days. we'll let you know how hot we will get the potential to break the record. >> thank you drew. students came together to pay respects to a former classmate. 19-year-old claire orton was killed in what police describe

as a murder-suicide. sergio was at tonight's vigil. >> claire orton graduated from high school last summer but she left a lasting impression on the school. they were shocked to hear she is gone. >> i am best friends with her brother, and i just remember feeling shocked and so many others felt exactly the same way. >> her brother neil was among those in the crowd. the school is on summer break so the organizers expected a smaller turnout. >> classes don't resume until august 24th. organizers are a little overwhelmed by the turnout. >> we were thinking 25, 30 people. then i e-mailed one of my teachers and i said i will let the entire cross country team know. >> the crowd held candles around her picture and made a short procession to the school's running field. she was a cross country star and an honor student. orton was at her parents' home from her first year of

college. she was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend who was from lafayette. he then turned the gun on himself. the vigil was an opportunity for as many people as possible to come together and grieve. >> this is supposed to be a positive experience and a positive outlet for people to speak. >> the crowd stayed mostly silent through the whole event. abc7 news. >> we are working to find out the identity of and the charges against a man shot by police after a carjacking near sfo. police say the man first crashed a stolen car. he took it from long-term parking and he then ran into traffic and tried to carjack other drives, but without success. he hid in some bushes and when he came out he was told to stop, but he moved toward the officer. >> one shot is fired. it does not strike the suspect. he was told to go and the other officers are heard

saying shoot me, shoot me shoot me. it appears to be the abdomen. >> he is expected to survive. >> a man accused of shooting a woman near 25th and connecticut street is under arrest tonight. abc7 news was at the scene in san francisco where officers have a man handcuffed to a fence after he tried to run away. >> an officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. he loved baseball. he played for the tri-valley a's, a men's league in the east bay. abc7 news was at graw gnaw tau high school -- granada high school. his glove and hat were placed on first base. >> they had a chance to forfeit the crime and i was telling scott he was playing

covering san ramon san mateo and all of the bay area, this is abc7 news. bobbi kristina brown, daughter of the late singer and entertainer whitney houston has died. her aunt, pat houston put out a statement that bobbi kristina is finally at peace in the arms of god. abc news reporter brandy hit with the details. >> like the second act of a family tragedy whitney houston's daughter has followed her mother in death. >> 21-year-old female in the bathtub face down. >> bobbi kristina brown was found unresponsive in the bathtub of her bathtub in her home outside at atlanta. doctors placed her on a ventilator and later moved to a special intensive care unit in another city and then to

hospice care as her condition deteriorated. her death too similar to her mother's. >> paramedics have a 46-year-old female found in the bathroom. >> in february of 2012 whitney houston was found in a hotel bathtub where authorities say she accidentally drowned. they found a dozen bottles of pills in her suite and determinedcthat cocaine contributed to her death. bobbi was the only child of whitney houston and bobby brown. known as krissy she was the sole heir to her mother's ease stap. estate. she claimed to be married but lawyers say they were never truly married. abc news los angeles. cal water issued a boil water alert for certain customers in lot altos because of e-coli contamination. customers between 280 and foothill expressway and burke road and magdalana avenue.

officials say tests indicate water in the area has e-coli. the water is safe for showering and bathing and other uses in the home. san francisco is facing a new lawsuit over new legislation putting health warning labels on the sugary drinks. they filed the suit and claim the city is trying to ensure that there is no free market place of ideas. the ordinance in june requires the health warnings be placed on ads on city property. from you exercising and eating right and still have an inch or two you can't get rid of, there is a new option. there is a device that literally kills fat cells. doctors say it could deliver better results than competing technologies. >> some will shrink the fat cells. the fat cells will still be there. >> coming up tomorrow night on abc7 news at 11:00 how it works and what it costs to melt away those extra pounds. more than 25,000 runners took part in the san francisco

out there right now it is 61 in oakland and currently 60 in san francisco. 65 in napa. fremont is currently 65 and antioch is checking in with a temperature of 64 at this hour. live doppler 7hd along with the satellite here is the set up. we have a weak cold front brush by us to the north. what it did it brought us the comfortable temperatures and the clear skies. what will quickly replace it is a big dome will bring us warm temperatures for the next 72 hours. plenty of stars out there and pretty nice sleeping weather. we will fall into the mid50s and low 60s and dropping to 58 in san francisco and the same in oakland. 60 in concord and 59 in livermore. for monday we begin the warming trend. 86 in san jose. 85 in santa clara. 86 in cupertino. 82 redwood city. 67 the high in pacifica. downtown san francisco, lots of sunshine and 74. 67 daly city. to the north bay, 84 to

petaluma. 90 napa and 84 vallejo. oakland 77 degrees. 81 in fremont and inland is warm in the 90s. 97 antioch and up to 90 in san ramon. the future temperatures takes it from there. look at the inland locations. 80s and maybe low 90s in oakland and the east bay and even into san jose we are in the 90s. the heat peaks on wednesday. wednesday afternoon around 1:06 and mid-nineties. we will be in the upper 90s in san jose and santa rosa. we will be in the 90s as well. the warmest air mass all year moves in and just some tips if you can. if you have to be outside frequent breaks in the shade. check on the pets, kids and elderly. they are the most saw step table. the accu-weather seven-day forecast shows we are sun soaked tomorrow and hot on

a putrid plant grew the biggest crowd in 12 years. abc7 news was in berkeley as more than a thousand visitors checked out the corpse flower. the full bloom only lasts a day. >> rarely do you see it because it lasts a short time. i think there is another element. i would guess everyone in here

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> good evening. i'm katie. in the headlines a deadly shooting shutdown redwood parkway. police believe someone shot a driver moments before he lost control and slammed into three parked cars. the driver died at the scene. firefighters are watching hotspots near a fire that destroyed two homes fear clear lake. the fire was 90% contained. a suspected it carjacker shot by police is expected to survive. police say the unarmed man ignored an officer's order to stop and moved toward the officer saying "shoot me" several times. police in moraga are reviewing security video after dozens of cars were broken into in less than a week. police say the cars were

needs medication. owners of a long-time san francisco restaurant head to court to fight to stay open. sin bads is in a dispute over the pier2 property on the embarcadero. restaurant owners filed a lawsuit for a stay. a record fine for chrysler. they slapped fiat with a record $105 million fine for allegedly mishandling recalls. according to the agency they botched two dozen recalls involving 11 million potentially defective cars. the findings are expected to be released tomorrow. starbucks is no longer banning a florida man from stores after he took action to protect a spot for people with disability. he says he was confronting drivers outside a st. petersburg store who were illegally parking in the

handicapped spot. the coffee giant september him a letter accusing him of threatening other customers. he is standing up for people with disabilities. >> this next story is a great reminder of the power of kindness. it started when a new jersey waitress decided to help two tired firefighters. they worked all night fighting a warehouse fire and stopped in for an early breakfast. instead of the bill woodward left the note thanking them for all they do serving others. they put the note on facebook and that's when her story came out. she has been trying to raise money to buy her dad a van and now nearly $60,000 was pledged. >> the fact it reached different states and cities and it has spread across the

a covering san rafael, south bay, pleasanton and all of the bay area this is abc7 news. >> tonight the abc7 news i team investigates how a marin county gym owner mistreated some of the young men who came to him for training. greg alan shutdown this business in may after the i team revealed he lied about being a military hero and the fbi is investigating possible charges. dan noyes has an update. >> reporter: joey is heading off to college soon. he was just starting his freshman year of high school when he went to san rafael's house of steel. his dad thought it would toughen him up. on 4:00 in the morning on a school day he made the mistake of looking him in the eye. >> he said don't you dare look me in the face or i will smash your head in the wall. >> you were 14 years old.

lieutenant." >> i would feel betrayed. >> i asked them to analyze the training tech eke intos. the house of steel training was difficult especially for those like joey the first day. >> you had to do 1 -- 100 push ups and if you didn't you had to start over. i could not do it. >> you can hurt somebody like that. how can you trade somebody if you don't know their ability? >> he held a hose over their faces as they laid outside on the ground. >> you have to scream otherwise the water goes in your mouth. to prevent you from choking you have to keep screaming. if it gets in there it is a disaster. >> several sources said he used the technique with the hose. >> it sounds like something you would do in a pow camp. >> do you use water in anyway

besides hydrating and in a healthy way? >> absolutely not. >> he said alan and his squad leaders use drinking water as punishment and in one session running laps in this parking lot he downed 10 bottles. >> we would have to drink a whole water bottle after one lap and then we would get another bottle and have to dribbing -- drink that in another lap. we kept doing it until we vomited it back up. >> one of the squad leaders made him do push ups in the mess. >> what kind of person makes somebody do push ups in their own vomit? i don't see how the guy slept at night. >> he says alan seems to have made up training techniques, what he thought marines might do because he never attended boot camp himself. bull is upset about what alan did in the name of the u.s. marine corp. >> it absolutelien infuriates me. that's unamerican. you don't do stuff like that. we are a nation built on honesty and integrity and

dedication. these words have meaning. they mean something. >> some young men credit the training of giving them a head start. >> getting in shape and a lot of running and a lot of cal calisthenics. >> reconnaissance marine was stunned when i broke the news that alan is a fake and first sergeant bull told me with all of the efforts he could have become a real marine and wouldn't have had to lie about it. after my first report in may 5811 shutdown the house of steel and two weeks ago i saw a crew patching the walls at the gym and pre -- preparing for new tenants. alan did not return my calls or text but i did reach his attorney who would not comment for the report. they will not allow marines to work out with him. i will be keeping track of the fbi investigation and tell you what happens next. for the i team, dan noyes, abc7 news.
