good morning, america. breaking news for our viewers in the west. fires and floods new wildfires scorching the west. flames shooting hundreds of feet in the air, hundreds of homes threatens as torrential downpours slam the east coast. city under watt e-roads wash add way. happening now, lost at sea. >> we want them home. >> a mother's plea for her son as he disappeared on a fishing trip. their boat found overturned. the all-out search by the coast guard right now. scary landing. a violent storm batters this passenger jet. a code red warning for the pilots. hurricane-force winds rocked the plane side to side. the frightening landing. and gone too soon. bobbi kristina brown dies overnight. six months after being found unresponsive in her georgia home and the mystery this morning of

how she died. the outpouring for the daughter of superstar whitney houston this morning. and good morning, america. such sad news about bobbi kristina. she was so young. still so many questions. you see here there with her mom, whitney houston. she died three years ago. still so many questions about what caused her death. but we do want to begin with the wildfires as we come on the air in the west. 20 large fires burning now, including two new ones. high winds make it difficult to fight the flames. matt gutman is in nevada city. good morning matt. >> reporter: that's right. there's dozens of wildfires in california right now. perhaps one of them are like the dangerous behind me. with sunrise it's gotten hotter and starting to creep up this hill. you can see it burning up this

hill right now. firefighters out here in force. dozens of crews trying to stop this from cresting the hill because, on the other side, are homes. overnight, wildfires raging across california. >> fires burning very, very quickly. >> reporter: in sacramento's nevada county, 1500 acres still burning this morning. >> hope nobody loses too much of their property. >> reporter: that fire only 15% contained. on the ground, over 1100 firefighters battling it. >> personnel from as far away as santa cruz had driven to save my home. >> reporter: planes and choppers attacking the blaze from the air. in this time-lapse video, the fire looks almost like an erupting volcano. >> we saw the flames when they crested the ridge there, going 500 feet tall. >> reporter: in okay oakhurst

20 miles away 450 structures are threatened. that fire has consumed 1100 acres so far with only 5% containment. since january, california has seen over 5,000 wildfires. nearly 75,000 acres have burned. now there are dozens of strike crews out here trying to fight these flames getting fearer and hotter. here's what they're battling again, these dry leaves. this it is so dry out here authorities told me these were likely started by an exhaust from a car. >> matt gutman, we thank you. to the latest on the movie and we have more flooding and more rain on the way. >> this is what that looks like. flash flood watch still fromle ft. meyerses up to several days. you can pick up to four inches of rain in the yellow area. right at the coast. orlando, 1 to 2 inches. remember some storms of come

through quick and we have flash flooding potential. we have severe flooding threats in the northern plains. bismarck. and fire danger is high. big ridge, high pressure building in. we could see record highs in northern california arias. gusty went winds, too. to the latest on the movie theater rampage in louisiana. the two women killed thursday night will be laid to rest today. we're learning more about the gunman this morning. his journal revealing the attack was pre meditated. questions still remain about why he did it. ryan owens is in lafayette with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: lara, good morning to you. you're quite right. one of the biggest mysteries that remain unsolved is why did a drifter whose last known address is it 500 miles from alabama, is this theater. this morning, police say they cannot find any real connection between the killer and this community. the murders of these two young women in a louisiana movie theater was premeditated and meticulously planned.

that's the startling conclusion this morning of state police after reading the journals of 59-year-old john "rusty" houser. >> he made comments he was coming. it was written down. the movie theater, the time, everything. "trainwreck." 7:15. >> reporter: in that journal? >> in that journal. >> reporter: detectives found that journal along with wigs, glasses, disguises in a motel 6 room where houser has been living since july. cbs news obtained this footage from the motel 6, showing houser walking up and down the hallways stopping by the front desk. even his car leaving just 20 minutes before the shooting. >> i need you en route to the grand theatre on johnson, we have an active shooter over there. >> reporter: police say houser parked that car next to the emergency exit to theater 14, so he could make a quick getaway. officers got here so fast, he ran back into the theater and shot himself. houser had a long history of mental illness. his family even had him committed. despite that, he was able to legally buy a gun at an alabama pawn shop.

>> we must choose good when others choose evil. >> reporter: at sunday's services at this deeply religious community, prayers for the nine injured and the two women who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy. 33-year-old jillian johnson and 21-year-old mayci breaux. both will be laid to rest later today. four victims remain in the hospital this morning. but here's some good news. those two hero teacher, one of whom pulled the fire alarm that mate have saved countless live both are now home from the hospital. george? >> that is good news, thank you, ryan. the race for president now. "your voice, your vote." new polls showing donald trump solidifying his place at the top of the field. ahead of jeb bush in wisconsin, governor scott walker, even after the remarks about governor mccain's war record. abc's political analyst matthew dowd is here. trump is showing staying power. that poll shows the majority of republicans him want him to stay in the race. what is he tapping into? >> i think the first thing,

it's been a mainstream in our country's history, a sense of anger and frustration. there's a group of voters out there that's very angry. that's often led to great change. civil rights, robin covering the special olympics. much of that started with anger. it has to be vented in a constructive, not destructive way. but i think that anger exists. i think the second thing is, there's a bunch of republicans that want straight talk. it's one that we wanted out of a candidate that got derailed because of a closed bridge that was a straight talker. the question becomes for donald trump, does he turn too many bridges and no longer survive in this? he's in it to stay. no question. >> it will complicate the debate for everyone else. meantime, new questions about hillary clinton's e-mails. government investigators find that several of them were classified. >> i think hillary will have an ongoing problem. she walks into this race. she was very popular before she got in. as soon as she walks in, there's a trust problem, much of which is self- inflicted. the history of the clintons is much of what happens to them is

not some gop conspiracy or media conspiracy. it's self- inflicted kwounds that she's going have to deal with. part of the problem they had, if they go overboard on it. some of the things mike huckabee said, they should allow that trust factor to exist and then let the voters decide on it. >> thank you, matt dowd. thanks very much. we want to turn to the desperate search for the two teens lost at sea off the coast of florida. the boat was found overturned but still no sign of the boys. abc's kendis gibson has more on that story. good morning, kendis. >> reporter: lara, good morning. this really is a race against time. but there's reason for hope. both of these boys have pretty much spent their entire lives boating. which is why their families felt comfortable enough to let them go out on their own and the coast guard telling us, there were life vests on board that boat. so, overnight, there was no let-up in the search. this morning, an around-the-clock search for two missing teenagers turning

increasingly urgent. coast guard crews uncovering a a damaged, overturned boat recovered. the same boat perry cohen and austin stephanos took on a fishing trip friday. the coast guard lowering the rescue swimmer, on to the vessel. the boys nowhere in sight. >> we want them home. >> reporter: the 14-year-olds departed jupiter, florida, friday afternoon to go fishing posting a snapchat indicating they were heading to the bahamas. at least 75 miles away. >> it's unexplainable. unbearable. these are our boys. these are our babies. >> there is nothing in the universe that we wouldn't give to have our boys back. >> reporter: now the increasingly worried parents enlisting football hall-of-famer and neighbor, joe namath in efforts to raise more than $100,000 in the search. >> they're so fine, these two young fellas. we just keep on praying, man. it's hard. it's so hard. >> reporter: with warmer temperatures and the boys'

extensive boating experience, as well as their food and water supplies, officials are holding out hope. >> all indications point to someone could survive. we've seen it happen before. >> reporter: the coast guard search now covering 26,000 nautical square miles. in the meantime, this reminder for experts. if you're heading out on the open ocean, always carry one of these personal locate beacons to send a sign of distress so coast guard can find you. george? >> makes a lot of sense. okay kendis, thanks so much. we turn now to the huge fire at a las vegas hotel that had guests running for their lives. 0 amazingly, no serious injuries at the cosmopolitan, a 3,000-room resort. this morning, investigators are closing in on the cause of the inferno. alex perez is in las vegas with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. i want to show you what may have stopped this from becoming a tragedy. take a look. right up there above that sign is the burned pool deck. the right here, next door, the fire department. crews were able to respond

within seconds. this morning, authorities zeroing in on a small area as they try to find out what sparked this blaze on the trendy cosmopolitan hotel on the vegas strip. >> it was literally walls of fire in every direction. >> reporter: it was just after noon saturday when within minutes, a small fire turned the 14th floor of this luxury hotel into a towering inferno. plumes of black smoke filling the sky. artificial palm trees and cabanas, fueling the flames. >> unbelievable. unbelievable. >> reporter: a few hundred guests on the deck scrambling down 14 stories to safety on the ground in minutes. >> when we were leaving, rushing toward the exit, we could feel the heat from the flames on our back. i have never seen a fire move that fast. >> it is so bad. >> reporter: a frightening reminder of the 1980 blaze at the mgm grand that killed 85 people. >> fire swept through the lower floors of the mgm grand. >> reporter: just three months later, an arson attack at the

las vegas hilton left eight dead, sparking authorities to pass sweeping changes of mandatory sprinklers and automatic alarms and emergency exit stairwells like these used to evacuate guests in saturday's fire pressurized, along with elevator shafts to help keep thick smoke out, all of this making sin city one much the safest in the world when it comes to fire safety and high rises. >> as fast as that fire took off and seeing that pool deck as loaded with people and patrons as it was, we're very lucky it went down as it did. >> reporter: and the hotel in a statement thanking its employees for being able to get everyone to safety so quickly. lara? >> thank you so much. so lucky. now to bobbi kristina. the daughter of whitney houston and bobby brown passed away last night. the 22-year-old's death coming six months after she was found unresponsive in a bathtub. the medical examiner plans an autopsy as questions still surround her death and abc's chris connelly has more. >> reporter: overnight, the final chapter in a heartbreaking

story. bobbi kristina brown, the daughter of whitney houston and bobby brown, pronounced dead, five months after being found unresponsive in her georgia home. in a statement, the houston family saying bobbi kristina passed away sunday july 26th. 2015, surrounded by her family. she is finally at peace in the arms of god. sympathy and uplift from celebrities on twitter. oprah tweeting, peace at last. dionne warwick, a cousin in the houston family, sharing her thoughts on bravo's "watch what happens live" sunday night. >> she was a sweetheart. she will be missed. that's for sure. >> yeah. >> she was a good girl. >> reporter: brown, an aspiring singer and actress, was found face-down in her bathtub in january of this year. >> 21-year-old female in the bathtub, face down. pd's en route. >> reporter: the case still under investigation. roswell police saying in a statement sunday night, our hearts go out to bobbi kristina's family. this does remain an active

thankfully touching down safely. the landing turned out to be all right. a wild crash at this motorcycle race overseas. the bike's throttle got stuck, throwing driver casey stoner into the air after hitting a barrier. he broke his leg and shoulder but seems to be in good spirits, posting this picture from the hospital. good for him. and finally, a baseball fan goes to the angels game to cheer on his favorite player, mike trout. he carries a fish net. appropriately labeled the trout net. and takes his seat in right field. then this happens, mike trout hits a grand slam. i bet you know where this is going because it wouldn't be in my newscast if it wasn't. >> no. >> yes, it lands right in the trout net. it's pretty incredible. he showed it off. it's two feet wide. if you think about that. >> trout was very accommodating. >> mike trout is very accurate. >> a little bonus.

grand slam. okay, amy, thanks. we turn to the search for what appears to be a lion on the loose in milwaukee. the city on edge for more than a week now. authorities thought they had the lion cornered over the weekend. but it slipped away. reena ninan has more on how police are hunting down the big cat. >> reporter: for the past week, 911 operators in milwaukee have been overwhelmed by calls about a four-legged stranger prowling their city. >> there's a wild animal back there? >> what did it look like? >> like a lion or tiger. >> i can't shoot him? >> no, don't shoot him. >> i'm going back in the house. >> reporter: armed with only this grainy cell phone image to back them up. >> i'm calling to report the possible sighting of a young lion. i'm not joking and i'm not crazy. >> reporter: the sightings treated like a modern day bigfoot by city authorities. >> we haven't found it. we haven't seen it, and we haven't had any subsequent confirmed sightings. >> reporter: but they are singing a different tune here this morning launching a massive manhunt after police described

right now, now developments in the fatal stabbing of the reality tv star known as the legal diva. loredana nesci's boyfriend is being charged her with murder, but he's claiming self-defense. >> reporter: the essence of reality shows is drama. not like this. a popular attorney is dead. the prime suspect, her boyfriend who she battled with in front of the cameras. this morning, the lawyer for robert reagan, accused of killing his reality tv star lawyer girlfriend, loredana nesci, says his client acted in self-defense. >> i'm not going to sit here and allow you to personally insult me that way. please. >> reporter: the relationship played out on the reality show featured the tough-talking attorney. who was a former lapd officer and body builder. >> something is just not adding up. >> reporter: robert reagan, 51, is charged with murdering loredana with a knife. but his attorney said the woman known as the legal diva attacked him first with the knife. the lawyers saying robert tried

to disarm her and in the intense struggle that ensued she's tragically suffered a fatal wound. friends say she was tough, not violent. >> she was just the nicest person you would have ever met. she helped so many people. you come in and ask her for help and she would never tell you know. it was never about money with her clients. >> reporter: she was known for her sharp tongue and neighbors said the couple fought often. >> they were always kind of yelling back and forth at each other. more often than not i would say. nothing to where you could think someone would kill someone. >> reporter: something even loredana's family admits. >> i have heard plenty of arguments between the two. i have never seen either of them lay a hand on each other. >> reporter: loredana's family sitting down with abc news, telling us they are now caring for the couple's 5-year-old son. >> we are distraught over the whole thing. we have a lot of healing ahead of us. >> reporter: her family says they're not surprised by the self-defense claim from reagan's attorney. that's what defense lawyers do.

reagan will be arraigned on august 20th. bail set at $1 million. he's being held behind bars. >> such a shame. thank you. turning now to the road rage incident in florida that spun out of control, ending in a fatal shooting. the deadly encounter played out on two separate 911 calls from both angry drivers. phillip mena has the story. >> reporter: this morning, a florida man out on bond after allegedly shooting and killing a father in front of his family. >> don't shoot! >> sir. >> i have 911 on the phone. [ gunshots ] >> reporter: robert doyle charged with second-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault for the deadly road rage incident praying out in dueling emergency calls, both men calling 911. >> he's going to flip me off? i'm going [ bleep ]. >> some maniac trying to follow me, trying to run me off the road. my gun is out. it's cocked and locked. >> reporter: police say this man was with his wife, 8-year-old

daughter, and 7-year-old grandson, as he followed robert doyle home. >> i'm going to follow him right to his house. >> no, no. you guys need to go home. >> the gun's coming out. >> reporter: the deadly confrontation ending outside doyle's house. >> he was walking toward the car and got shot five times in the back. >> reporter: they say doyle then forced gonzalez's wife and two young children out of the car at gunpoint. >> the guy held them hostage with the gun until the cops arrived. >> reporter: doyle has yet to enter a plea but is set to be arraigned early next month. for "good morning america," phillip mena, abc news, new york. >> what a horrible story. the latest now on hulk hogan. the superstar wrestler fired by the wwe, kicked out of the hall of fame, after his racist remarks on a private tape were made public. honing is now apologizing but his long relationship with the wwe appears to be over. david wright has the story. >> reporter: this morning, the

most famous professional wrestler of all time is no longer a wwe hall of famer. hulk hogan, for now, just another gym rat. spotted this weekend with his wife on their way to work out in clearwater, florida. hogan has been body-slammed by his own words eight years ago. in a racist outburst complete with the "n" word caught on tape. the wwe saying in a statement, we are committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds. >> the swiftness with which the wwe made the decision to scrub hogan from their website and hall of fame has surprised some. especially because he was such a face of the organization for so many years. >> reporter: the recording is the first big bombshell in the court filings from hogan's $100 million liable suit against gawker media. hogan is suing the media for posting a sex tape of him with the wife of his then best friend, a florida deejay called bubba the love sponge.

you want to talk about what's going on in your life, other people's lives. at what point does it cross the line and just becomes dirty gossip? >> there's a simple litmus test. is what you're about to say or share or listen to, is it harmful to somebody else? is it destructive in character? is it something you would never ever say directly to the person you're taking about? and i would even go so far as to say is it something that you would potentially deny if ever asked if you said it or participated in it? if it fits any of those thing, it's probably not healthy gossip. it's not the good kind of chitter chatter at the water cooler. >> my mom always said, if you can't say it to their face, don't say it behind their back. a good golden rule. what do you do when someone starts gossiping to you about someone else? it can be uncomfortable. >> there's a few options. the first is, call them on it. right? so it's very clearly. >> really? >> clearly saying, that's harmful gossip. i don't want a part of it.

it takes a big level of comfort. not everybody is comfortable policing other people. i don't know that i would be comfortable with that. there are other options if that is too harsh. step away from the situation. don't give an audience to somebody who is gossiping. by listening, you're an active participant. step away from that conversation. the other is to turn a negative into a positive. and this is where you can really take control. somebody says to you, oh, my gosh. you know, jane is such a suck-up to the boss.that they're having an affair. you're like, yikes. right. and so to that, you say, i actually really like jane. i respect her work. >> i like that. >> that totally takes the high road when somebody's gone low. >> that's perfect. >> how do you handle, if the gossip you hear is about you? when you know people are talking about you behind your back. we have all been there. what do you do? >> first, if it's untrue, petty, laughable, something you can dismiss, don't add fuel the fire. just let it go. let it die down.

it will disappear. people will realize they're not getting a rise out of you. it's going to go away. >> that's hard to do, too. >> it's very hard to do. especially when it's about you and you do take it so personally. if it is true, there's a couple of different tactics. one of them is address it directly. so, you know, i know that i was caught on an informational interview with the competition. now everybody is saying, you know what? she's not happy here. i bet she's going to leave. i need to nip the gossip. i might say to somebody, you know what? there's a lot of gossip about my employment. i want you to know i'm really committed to this position. and if and when that changes, you're going to be the first to know. and so simply by addressing it and nipping it, you're not lying. you're nipping it. it has a chance to die down. the other option is, if it's something being said about you that's true but it's just too personal and difficult for you to talk about it. maybe a situation where i'm going through a divorce. someone has discovered that. everybody is gossiping about that divorce.
