ing your good morning, america. happening now, heat alert. stifling temperatures across the country. heat advisories in the south and east as temperatures rise into triple digits in the west, fueling those out-of-control wildfires. >> we have hundreds and hundreds of homes that could be threatened. >> thousands forced from their homes. more than 5,000 firefighters on the front lines. breaking overnight mail threat. the fbi investigating threatening letters some with a strange white powder sent to nearly two dozen government offices. a police officer rushed to the hospital. the very latest this morning. holding out hope. new video showing the capsized boat of those missing teenagers lost at sea. the coast guard expands its hunt and why their parents say this water cooler could be the life raft that's keeping them alive. ♪ you make me feel like ♪ and a "bachelorette"

but the july fry is on from louisiana to shreveport up to kansas city and st. louis. they are in an excessive heat warning. that means air temperatures will reach 100 in little rock and 100 in memphis. but it will feel up to 110, even 113 in some places. then we put on tomorrow's highs. because it's sticky, it's hot and it could be, if you're exposed for cumulative days, dangerous. i'm more concerned about the heat and the potential records out west. we won't have records here in the east. but look at that. sacramento stays in the 100s. very dry, very gusty, terrible for the fire conditions and that's why we head to our matt gutman there at the lowell fire. matt. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. just since we've been here this morning, this fire has exploded. breaking containment jumping from one side of this hill to the other. very bad news for firefighters. here's why. see how that wind carries that sand? that's what it's been doing with the flames.

breaking barriers and making things much more dangerous for firefighters here. overnight with new fires exploding fueled by wind and heat, firefighters scrambling to gain the upper hand. new fires smoking up in bass lake and oakhurst. here at the lowell fire stakes still high. firefighters amassing at the top of hillsides to meet the flames. >> we have hundreds and hundreds of homes that could be threatened. >> reporter: 1800 homes evacuated so far. from the sky an all-out aerial attack. a dozen choppers and another dozen air tankers. we've been watching this fire for four hours now steadily march up this hill now. helicopter after helicopter dousing those flames. these fires taxing firefighters physically and mentally. >> grueling hours sometimes but that's what we signed up for. >> reporter: this morning across california, more than 5,000 firefighters battling 9 separate major wildfires. homeowners hacking down their beloved pines. was there a point over the past few hours or days that you thought you might lose this house?

>> yeah, about every ten minutes. >> reporter: with firefighters strapped, helping themselves. now we have just spoken with firefighters. even they don't know how many new achors are burning. that's how big this new burn is. what they do know is where the wind and temperatures set in the triple digits it will be a very long fight over the next few days. george? >> thanks, matt. we're going to turn now to those threatening letters september to nearly two dozen government offices in oregon. some of them contain a white powder, one sheriff has been rushed to the hospital with a roar. pierre thomas has all the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the concern in oregon is real this morning after that law enforcement official was hospitalized after opening one of at least ten letters sent to state offices. we don't yet know what that substance is but "the oregonian newspaper" quotes a state official saying the officer sustained a rash immediately upon opening that letter. the fbi is assisting local if i

believe officials adds they work the determine precisely what this substance is and who sent it. investigators are investigating whether it came from the same person. we expect that state officials will be testing that substance. and we may learn more today about exactly what we're dealing with, george. >> okay, pierre. we have seen these kind of attacks before, thanks. now to a real scare in the sky. a crowded passenger plane from china to dallas forced to turn around after it was struck by hail. you can see the damage to the nose right there. the plane did land safely and abc's jim avila has our story. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, lara. it was a short flight, less than an hour. but one passengers aboard one of aviation's newest planes will not forget. this morning a look at what severe hail can do to a modern jetliner. >> yeah, wow. >> reporter: this brand-new boeing dreamliner took off monday, an american airlines flight from beijing headed to dallas-ft. worth. 44 minutes into the flight the plane hit severe weather. >> all we can tell you it was just crazy, going sideways, up and down. >> yeah, it was pretty scary. >> it was scary.

>> we dropped a good few hundred feet at least. >> i thought the plane was going down actually. >> just that feeling of -- >> reporter: the pilots turned back for beijing and landed safely, but with some major dents in the nose cone. >> hail can damage an airplane to the point that it actually brings an airplane down if it damages engines or control surfaces it can make it unflyable. >> reporter: it's not the first time this type of thing has happened. in june, this delta 747 forced the land after hail pummeled the nose and wings so badly, delta grounded the plane permanently. as for that dreamliner, fortunately none of that dreamliner's 222 passengers and crew on board was hurt. the nose cone covers some radar equipment, but the plane's operations were not hindered. remember, this plane is made completely of carbon fiber so it could take some time to repair. george? >> okay, jim, thanks. we have the race for president now.

"your voice, your vote." and what it takes to get noticed in this already heated race. former arkansas governor mike huckabee stirring up the latest firestorm by suggesting the nuclear deal with iran could cause another holocaust. president obama, so many others hitting back hard. and tom llamas is here with all the fireworks. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george so far, this has been a campaign of shock and awe soundbites on the republican side. many saying there are just some things that are off the table and any comparison to the holocaust is one of them. but when huckabee got a chance to respond, he kept going. >> thank you. >> reporter: this morning, former arkansas governor mike huckabee, the latest republican presidential candidate, grabbing headlines. first comparing president obama's iran policy to the holocaust. >> he's so naive he would trust the iranians and he would take the israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven. >> reporter: then standing his ground monday defending his comments on fox news. >> three times i've been to auschwitz. when i talked about the oven

door, i have stood at that oven door. i know exactly what it looks like. >> reporter: refusing to apologize. >> i will not apologize and i will not recant and no one loves israel more. >> reporter: president obama even weighing in from africa. >> in 18 months i'm turning over the keys. i want to make sure i'm turning over the keys to somebody who is serious about the serious problems that the country faces and the world faces. >> reporter: the president saying presidential hopefuls seem to be trying to outtrump trump, who has been dominating news cycles and polls. >> and he's probably the worst president in the history of our country. >> maybe this is just an effort to push mr. trump out of the headlines. but it's not the kind of leadership that is needed for america right now. >> reporter: and we're now nine days away from the first republican debate. the top ten candidates from the five most recent national polls would make the main stage and right now let's take a look. that's trump, bush, walker, rubio, paul, cruz, huckabee, carson, christie, and perry.

lara, it looks like a crowded field, but there are six people who won't qualify for the main event. >> that's true. and lots and lots to say. thank you, tom. turning to that urgent search for those two missing teens lost at sea. the coast guard expanding its hunt. while their families hold out hope they may have grabbed smlg to stay afloat when their boat capsized. kendis gibson is in jupiter, florida, with all the latest. good morning, kendis. >> reporter: lara, good morning. this is the very spot where those teens made a critical decision. leaving the safety of the inlet for the atlantic ocean, right over there. family and friends are hoping they made an important decision and are clinging on to a cooler or another floating device. this morning the coast guard expanding its massive search for 14-year-old austin stefanos and perry cohen. aircrafts and boats now patrolling 27,000 square nautical miles of ocean. >> nobody's on board. >> reporter: newly released video showing the teenagers'

capsized boat floating 67 miles from the florida shore. is that a good or bad thing? does it give you a sense of -- >> it's a good thing because it validated our search efforts that we were looking in the right area. >> reporter: the teens set out from this marina friday morning reportedly heading to the bahamas. >> the water is relatively warm. you can survive for quite a few days. >> reporter: their families now circulating a new flier to boaters and pilots over the atlantic, saying we believe the boys made floating devices, noting that life jackets and a cooler were missing from their boat. >> these two kids have some experience on the water. we hope they had extra personal flotation devices. certainly, that will to live. >> i think between the two of them they work as a team they're going to be found and they're going to be okay. >> reporter: the teens are trained mariners both licensed to operate vessels on their own. it's part of the lifestyle in jupiter. what's the earliest age when you took it up? >> like the same age, 14. >> reporter: 14 years old, you went out on your own? >> yeah. >> reporter: but that culture is sparking debate online with some criticizing the boys' families

for allowing them to go out on their own. even the coast guard doesn't have age recommendations for boaters. overnight, a hopeful vigil as friends and family set off lanterns lighting up the night sky over jupiter. this, by the way, is the same location where more than 100 people came out for that vigil last night. the coast guard captain in charge of this entire operation telling me personally they do not plan to give up. lara? >> all right. none of us will give up. thank you so much, kendis. we want to turn now to amy with the other top stories this morning. starting with a big decision by the boy scouts. >> that's right. we have new reaction overnight to the decision by the boy scouts to lift the ban on gay scout leaders. the organization says church-based units will still be allowed to exclude gay adults. but the mormon church, a major sponsor of the boy scouts, is protesting the move and threatening to quit the organization, saying its century-long association with scouting will need to be examined. also breaking overnight a tragic end to the search for a

missing 8-year-old in northern california. police in santa cruz say the body of madyson middleton has been found behind the apartment complex where she lived. she was last seen sunday riding her scooter. a 15-year-old boy who lived in the same complex is now under arrest and being questioned. people in oklahoma have been rattled by a series of earthquakes. groceries were knocked off the shelves near the epicenter north of oklahoma city. look at that. the biggest quake, a magnitude 4.5. about 2 million people felt that shaking, experts have linked oil and gas drilling to a 50% increase in quakes in that area in recent years. and some tense moments on the road as a robbery suspect led police on a nearly two-hour chase between new jersey and philadelphia. the man speeding through a mall parking lot until finally, a state trooper clipped him on this corner, flipping the van over. he climbed out of the window but then quickly surrendered. a bizarre case of stolen cash caught on camera.

two workers on their way to filling atms in new jersey say they inadvertently left a bag full of $141,000 in cash right there on that lawn. and then you see later, thieves in a van drive by and pick it up. police say by the time the workers realized their mistake and they went back, the thieves were long gone with the cash and they do not believe this was an inside job. >> hmm. >> wow. finally, a race that really turned up the heat. a local gas company dressed kids up as appliances for this race between innings at a baseball game in michigan. things got off to a rocky start when the oven overheated. >> oh! >> oh! >> stumbling over his feet. minutes later, it was the dryer taking a tumble. >> oh! >> the water heater thought it had just the right temperature for this one. but the others raced back, and a big collision. this until he tripped and lost everything to the dryer.

>> oh, wow. always good to watch. so funny. when they're safe. >> the dryer by a nose. >> did you guys get any of my puns? >> yes, we got 'em all. >> the oven overheated. >> i was proud of you. >> you have a future in sportscasting. a little play by play. >> if you call that sports. but yes. >> thanks, amy. we turn to an outrageous 911 call out of new mexico. it came from a woman trying to save a teenager who was shot at a party. you hear a dispatcher tell the woman she's on her own then hang up after the caller snapped at him. abc's reena ninan has the story. good morning, reena. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning to you. 911 operators are trained to keep you talking so they know what resources to dispatch. the other thing about 911 calls, they're always recorded. even if the operator decides they've had enough. >> i'm doing cpr as we speak. i'm keeping him alive. >> okay, is he not breathing? >> barely. stay with him. one more breath. [ inaudible ].

stay with him. good job. just stay with me, okay, okay. there you go. good job, jaydon. >> reporter: this is the desperate call following a fatal drive-by shooting last month. a woman frantically calling 911, looking for help to save 17-year-old jaydon chavez-silver's life. in the call the dispatcher allegedly hangs up. >> is he breathing? >> he's barely breathing. how many times do i have to [ bleep ] tell you? >> okay, you know what, ma'am. you can do this yourself. i'm not going to deal with this okay? >> no, my friend is dying. >> reporter: that's when the phone line apparently goes dead. officials say units were on their way to the albuquerque scene before the call was disconnected, but chavez-silver passed away. the dispatcher that answered the call for the teen who dreamed about flying in the air force this morning on administrative leave. the department now investigating. police have not named suspects in the shooting. they believe the teen was not the intended target. just wrong place, wrong time.

as for that 911 operator, the local fire chief says they take these allegations very seriously, george. >> as they should, that is just tragic. reena, thanks very much. switching gears now, big day for football. >> yeah, it is history being made in the nfl this morning. the arizona cardinals have become the first team to hire a female coach. and abc's t.j. holmes is here with the story. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: and strahan, not only that. she's going to be coaching inside linebackers, guys known as some of the toughest and smartest guys on defense. with all due respect, of course, strahan. you'll hear a lot of words to describe her, pioneer, trail blazer. make sure you use another word, as well. qualified. overnight the arizona cardinals soaring into the history books. >> sacked again. >> reporter: the team naming jen welter to its training camp and preseason coaching staff, believed to be the first female ever to hold a coaching position in the nfl. >> she has a very accomplished background in terms of playing and coaching.

she understands the game. she's played the game. >> reporter: welter who will coach the linebackers, is no stranger to football first. she's known as the first lady of men's football becoming in february the first coach to coach a men's league, the indoor football league. and in 2014, becoming the first woman to play a nonkicking position in a men's pro league despite being only 5'2" and 130 pounds. >> everybody wanted to see like, oh, my gosh, what's going to happen when she gets hit for the first time? and i got hit, and popped right back up and we lined back up and did it again. i mean, that's football. >> reporter: welter the latest to burst through that ceiling. >> here we go here we go. watch out. come on now. >> reporter: she follows sara thomas who, in april was hired as the league's first full-time female referee. the league's newest barrier breaker tweeting overnight "i'm honored to be part of the bird gang. love the football family here with the arizona cardinals." and her new players already returning the love. pro bowler patrick peterson tweeting one team, one goal. let's go to work, coach.

good morning, america. right now, dangerous heat stretching across the country this morning. heat advisories in the south. the east bracing for a possible wave. triple-digit temperatures are fueling the wildfires in the west. also, federal officials will be grilled on capitol hill today about those live anthrax samples that were sent accidentally to dozens of labs around the country. a major investigation under way. also in the headlines right now, that prison worker who helped those two killers escape in upstate new york is heading to court this morning. joyce mitchell is reportedly hoping to reach a plea deal. we say good morning, america. a lot to get to this morning. check out this picture, imagine waking up next to this 5,000-pound tree right on your bed. a 20-year-old woman was actually in the bed when the tree came down, fell right on top of her. and actually the emergency responder said it took a long time to get her out.

they say it was the way she was sleeping that may have saved her life. >> she was sleeping when it happened. she is so lucky. we'll have more on that coming up. we want to begin with bobbi kristina brown. still so many questions about how and why she died. authorities say the investigation is open. it is active. and abc's david wright is tracking it all for us this morning. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, lara. bobbi kristina brown never regained consciousness to explain how she ended up face down in her own bathtub. the initial autopsy completed yesterday didn't explain it either. and what's not clear is was she the victim of her own lifestyle or of a crime? >> 21-year-old female in the bathtub face down. >> reporter: this morning new questions about the day last january that bobbi kristina brown's boyfriend found her unresponsive in the bathtub of her suburban atlanta home. >> there is cpr in progress. we're getting it third party that is not on scene. she is gurgling at this time. >> reporter: the medical examiner's office now tells abc

news the initial autopsy is inconclusive. it does not show an obvious underlying cause of death or any significant injuries. the question of how and why she died still the focus of an active investigation. subpoenas issued. ♪ and i ♪ >> reporter: one big question -- could drugs have been a factor? as they were for her famous mother, whitney houston, who drowned in a hotel bathtub nearly three years to the day earlier. >> she said she'd learned from her mother's mistakes and was looking to move on and grow and move past her drug use. >> reporter: another possibility that a recent car crash might be to blame. just four days before she slipped into a coma, bobbi kristina crashed her friend's jeep into an oncoming car. or is there some other explanation? brown was last seen publicly the week before her death leaving a cvs store with her boyfriend nick gordon. sources close to the couple say they had a stormy relationship. brown's conservators recently served gordon with a $40 million lawsuit claiming he stole her money.

and physically abused her. allegations gordon denies. according to the suit, when she entered the hospital, her mouth was swollen and one of her teeth knocked out. as whitney houston's sole heir, bobbi kristina brown was set to inherit some $20 million. the boyfriend has not been criminally charged. his mother tells abc news he is in mourning and that her son loved her and cared for her deeply. one more tragic detail to add, lara, or george, and that is that she's being buried next to her mom. >> okay, david, thanks very much. dan abrams here right now. david just talked about the $20 million bobbi kristina was set to inherit when she turned 30. what happens to that now? >> you have to separate that out into the money that she's already received from the will, which is a couple million dollars. that goes to her estate, that could likely end up with bobby brown. the rest of it goes back to what whitney houston's will said, so because she didn't get the rest

incredible story, good morning to you. that tree just about as big as this one and that is why so many this morning are calling this story a miracle. this morning an incredible image on new york's long island. a massive tree weighing 5,000 pounds crashing right through a family's home at midnight, pinning a 20-year-old woman right to her bed. incredibly the young woman alive but stuck. when you saw this damage, you must have been thinking, my gosh, she is lucky. >> yeah, no, absolutely, that was some of the most extensive damage i've ever seen. >> reporter: dozens of rescuers working for two hours using hydraulic lifts to free the woman. overnight, that 20-year-old telling abc news she's thankful to be alive. >> she was great. she was talking to us and she was able to tell us what was going on. >> reporter: emergency responders crediting her survival to the fact that she was sleeping on her side, saying mere inches separated her from more serious injury. so many now asking what caused that tree to come crashing down? this morning, word that the tree was rotting at the base.

some worry we open the door to desperate women selling their eggs to the highest bidder or putting their health at risk to make money interest their genetic material all things that will probably come out in this lawsuit. george. >> a lot of issues to work through. deborah, thanks so much. we're joined by dr. jen ashton and dan abrams is back. walk us through the process of donation. >> medically this is a very extend tiff process. the first thing a woman considering donating her eggs has to go through is a general medical evaluation. make sure she's healthy enough to go through it then we suppress the donor's ovarian function so we can override that take control then stimulate they are ovaries with daily injections of hormones then there's monitoring with ultrasound sonograms to know when you're going to retrieve those eggs and then the egg retrieveal process involves an these ya risks of bleeding infection, damaged internal organs with a very long needle. takes three to five weeks? we heard one woman, $38,000 for

her eggs. how is the price set? >> when you talk about donating eggs versus sperm, it's not apples to apples. when the talk about the sperm donation it's based on an hourly rate so men are paid $60 to $75 an hour and they have estimated that women take about 56 hours to go through this entire process so they arrive at a price of $4,000. these are not equivalent processes. men, first of all, can donate 2 million sperm at a pop. women are born with 300 eggs that they off late over their reproductive lifetime. >> dan, i know these egg donation prices are just guidelines so where does a lawsuit come? no specific legal caps. >> the clinics are signing up agreeing to abide by these particular guidelines. this a pretty strong lawsuit. i mean when you think about the fact that the purpose of the law, right the antitrust law is to say that businesses

entities covertly or overtly, can't get together and agree on particular prices and generally it's an effort to increase prices not bring down prices. but i think that here you can make a very good argument "a," when the price is capped on the women, well is the price capped then on the clinics? and secondly another i think interesting response to this argument of well you know women desperate women are going to do this when they shouldn't. what about the difference between a woman makes $30,000 a year an a woman who makes $300,000 a year. that $5,000 is going to mean a lot less to someone who makes 300,000 so are we going to start evaluating how much money they make in assessing how much they're allowed to sell their eggs for? it's pretty strong moving forward? we'll look at it. dan, thanks very much. jen, you'll take questions on twitter all morning. >> yes. >> @drjashton.

♪ who run this ♪ >> reporter: beyonce empowering girls who are running the world. in many ways, it's true. few the last few decades, women have been breaking professional barriers. but this morning, a report by harvard's educational school revealing there is a hidden barrier your teen girls are running up against. >> girls are facing biases from many sources. they're facing biases from teen boys from some parents, from each other. >> reporter: the startling result, these biases could be holding girls back from succeeding. >> we have made a lot of progress in terms of gender equality, but we still have a long way to go. >> reporter: the study of 20,000 students showing only 8% of teen girls preferred female political leaders. >> i expected more. >> males have always led, so i guess we're kind of used to it. >> right now it seems to be mostly a male-dominated sphere. >> reporter: but what's more surprising, even some mothers appearing to be biased supporting school councils more when led by boys.

people to support. and they're also feeling so insecure about how they look. so, think about instagram and social media. they're feeling like i'm not as pretty as the next girl so they're not supporting each other. >> and the first time you see someone delike one of your instagrams, it sets off all kinds of emotion. >> that's it. betrayal. exactly, exactly. >> how do you break these patterns especially for moms? >> right. i mean, i think one of the things we have to remember about moms is that they grew up with a different set of messages and they're also not dumb. they know that girls who are outspoken and who are seen as aggressive are probably going to suffer for it. so they may be worried about their daughters. but i think that there's a lot that parents can do. this isn't just about what girls need to do. it's what we can all do for them. >> so what should parents be doing for them? >> well, first of all, research shows that chores can be distributed in very gendered ways. that means we tell boys to mow the lawn and girls do the dishes so change it up at home. that's a big thing parents can do. let boys do caregiving. beliefs and attitudes start very earl li.

and parents can help kids change it early and quickly in the home. another thing, change the way we talk to our kids. so, if you have an outspoken girl, do you call her bossy or do you say, i'm so glad you spoke up? if you have guys at home who talk about doing things like a girl as if that's a weak thing to do, we've got to say, knock it off. that's not the way to talk. >> so, we've got to be checking ourselves all the time. >> totally. we all have our own biases. i mean, this is what i do for a living. but i can tell you i have a 3-year-old daughter and when she doesn't want to wear a dress, i get bummed out. i got to deal with my own stuff. every parent has to look at their own biases. what toys are we buying for our kids? are we buying the girls makeup kits and boys the science kits? it's okay to do that but change it up a little bit. >> never too early to do that. >> never too early. >> let's go outside to ginger. hey, george. now it's time to debt out and give. we're sharing stories of incredible people making a difference in communities across the nation. it's part of abc's be inspired initiative and this morning, the young boy whose mission it is to bring a smile to the faces of kids in the hospital. ♪ >> reporter: a child's smile can
