live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> santa cruz police believe they have found the body of a missing 8-year-old girl following an intense search for maddy middleton. a teen boy is being questioned and police are about to hold a news conference. >> i am eric thomas here for christian. >> this is an excruciatingly difficult day for everyone after a child's body was found in a dumpster behind the apartment complex which maddy lived with her mother. a news conference is about to get underway in santa cruz. that is where janet o has the latest.

janet? >> what started off as a case of a missing child is now a murder investigation. police will be addressing many questions at the news conference that is about to get underway. back at the sketch the coroner was seen leaving this morning after spending hours on site along with investigator whose have been at the art center throughout the night and morning gathering evidence from the garage where the dumpster was located and where maddy's body was found yesterday evening. they have been gathering evidence and what appears to be the suspect's apartment on the third floor. that is where neighbors say the 15-year-old teen lived with his family. thestein in police custody being questioned in connection with the death of 8-year-old. many parents have been coming by to pay respects leaving a flower at the growing memorial in honor of maddy too close to home of a tragedy. >> you realize you have to be vigilant all the time. it is sad we have to live in a world where these things occur.

customers by early evening. another water main break near folger was capped quickly. selling cars is not normally dangerous but do not tell that to a car salesman who went through a terrifying test drive when a customer asked to test drive a van drove his home in pittsburg end with a police chase and crash in antioch. amy hollyfield joins us. colleagues say the sales associate was pretty shaken up but he is okay. fortunately, the march who kidnapped him wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. the car he stole had a tracking device in it. it started out as a routine test drive. the customer ever drove the van to the by birth home to the family. >> the seams man went to the house and the three year old son was running in the car, saying,

daddy, it has tvs, it has leather. kind of weird. >> the sales associate say that the test drive turned into a crime. the customer left his home and became threat being. >> gentleman turned to him and said we are not going back to the dealership. you are coming with me. the salesman was, like no, we need to get back to the dealership and the man grabbed his shirt and slammed him against the window of the passenger window of the car and the salesman was freaked out and the guy was hitting high speeds and driving crazy. i believe he smashed two cars. >> when heavy traffic forced the driver stop the salesman jumped out of the car and called police. >> finding the stole card was not hard. >> onstar located the car and remain swad in. can you not get away. that is the best thing about g.m. >> they have the man's driver's license on record standard procedure. he was booked into jail.

public. birdrying services are private. scott lunger was shot and killed last week in the line of daughter. >> new details on the man charged in the shooting death of kate steinle on san francisco's pier 14. a late august preliminary hearing has been set for francisco sanchez seen in court this morning. the undocumented immigrant is accused of killing the 32-year-old woman on july 1. francisco sanchez pleaded not guilty despite admitting on camera to one of our abc7 news crews that he fired the weapon that killed here. francisco sanchez has previously been convict evidence seven felonies and deported five times. >> the concern of water contamination is the result of tests expected tomorrow determining how much longer people in los altos neighborhood will have to boil drinking water because of e. coli bacteria. 850 customers living between interstate 280 burke road and magdalena avenue are affected. california water authorities think it was contaminated during

repairs to a water main break on friday. workers have collected samples to determine when the water is safe to drink again. >> crews still battling nine wildfires across california right now two of the biggest close to the bay area firefighters have the 6,500 acre wragg fire near lake berryessa 80 percent contained with gulf containment expected by thursday. evacuation warnings are still in affect for those living near the lowell fire northeast of sacramento. it has burned 2,200 acres since saturday and it is 30 percent contained. the willow fire has burned 1700 acres since saturday and crews have it only 5 percent contained. >> parts of the bay area could be so hot we could hit triple digits today because of a heat wave. >> meteorologist mike nicco is here with the forecast and he has been wanting us. >> we have been watching it for a couple of days so well jump right into it by opening the

i inrow dues the mayor. >> thank you, chief. on behalf of the santa cruz community, the city of santa cruz and the santa cruz city council i want to begin by expressing my deepest sympathies to the parents, the family and friends of madyson middleton. our thoughts and our hearts and our prayers go out to those chose to madyson middleton who have been devastated by the tragic loss of this very precious life. i know thousands of members of this community are joining with her loved one in greening the loss and will continue to provide support. while it is important we seek justice and i have great confidence that everyone involved in our criminal justice system will continue to work toward that end today is also a day to honor the life of madyson

middleton and offer our support to those who have been most profoundly affected by her death. thank you. good morning, everyone, thank you for being here. i am the police chief for santa cruz kevin vogel. i express my sympathies to the family of madyson middleton. this has been just a horrific experience for the family and our entire community and i express sympathy from the santa cruz police department and from myself. i am going to go through a chronology of evens starting with sunday evening when mad was first reported missing to the santa cruz police department. the first report came in at approximately 6:08 p.m. on sunday, july 26 from the tannery art center located on

river street where madyson lived. she was last seen on that evening at approximately 5:05 p.m. where she was captured on a video system at the complex lying her scooter around the complex. when we first received the call we dispatched officers and upon learning we had a missing 8-year-old we flooded the area with police officers and detectives in an effort to locate madyson conducting an extensive search of the area she was last seen clouding the surrounding wood land areas and open spaces, the river levee and the entire tannery arts center complex in our effort to locate her. we realized quickly that we needed additional resources to assist us in the search. therefore my staff contacted santa cruz county sheriff's

office on sunday evening and requested the assistance of their search-and-rescue team. we also requested specially trained k-9 units from the california state office of emergency services to assist us with our efforts. the police department staff in santa cruz as well as our other allied law enforcement agencies worked throughout the night to follow up and consider the search for madyson and hopes of finding her safely. we reached out to the f.b.i. on sunday folk their assistance. they sent a team of agents to us to assist with the search for maddy with additional resources to be brought in on monday morning. all available personnel and f.b.i. personnel and search-and-rescue personally from santa cruz county and adjoining counties conditions the search for maddy hoping to find her safe.

last night at 7:55 p.m. a santa cruz police detective conducted a secondary and more thorough canvas of the complex which included the search of a recycle bin located in an enclosure on the first floor parking structure at the tannery arts center complex. maddy's body was located in that recycle bin. without compromising the integrity of this investigation, i will merely say that maddy's body was concealed if a recycled bin in a way that was not obvious or readily appoint. there was a 15-year old male juvenile who resides in an apartment on the property in the location where her body was pound and he was near when maddy was located. he was subsequently taken into custody. he was property back to the santa cruz police department and

interviewed. investigators from the santa cruz police department interviewed this interview into the early, early morning hours this morning. he was subsequently arrested for the murder of madyson middleton. additionally investigators have located evidence that links the suspect to this horrific crime. we have determined that maddy was an aquantitiesance of the suspect by both being residents of the complex and it appears she was lured to the suspect's pant willingly. additionally we have determined that made was murdered inside of the suspect's apartment. she was then carried downstairs to the recycle bin where she was concealed in the recycle bin. we have determined that the suspect acted alone. not in cop sort with anyone -- in concert with anyone else. there is no risk or threat to our community at this point.

the suspect is currently in custody. he is being housed at santa cruz county juvenile detention facility. i would like to thank the members of my staff who worked relentlesslies many working 36 hours straight driven by our desire and hope we would find maddy safe. our investigation is still in full swing and we have many hours of work in front of us. i also would like to thank our law enforcement partners who assisted us and contributed with personnel and other resources. specifically, i thank the sheriff of our county jim hart and his search-and-rescue team and his staff who searched relentlessly in the trails, woods and waterways and open spaces in the hopes of finding maddy. i also want to thank the san mateo county sheriff who provided resource if the search-and-rescue efforts. standing behind me is our

district attorney, jeff rosewell. we have worked together for a long-term and every case of this magnitude or any case where there is a criminal prosecution goes to the district attorney's office. jeff and his staff have been right beside us throughout the entire investigation. i could not think of anyone else i would rather work so closely with throughout a case like this in our district attorney's office and they have opinion magnificent so i extend my thanks. i also thank the any my and specifically special agent mall con palmore who assisted us. in hours the f.b.i. brought in 50-plussing as and set up a command post and assisted us with the investigation. i want to thank the american red cross. they sustained our first responders throughout this investigation and they were out and still are i believe, at the

complex where this occurred. they were a great community partner in this. i want to thank the communities members would came forward and offered assistance and support. we had -- i would not hazard a guess how many came out but they helped canvas and they were this for whatever we needed throughout the entire investigation. we could not do something like this without the support of our community. our communities really showed up in force after maddy disappeared. i want to extend my sincere thank you for the community and really the message here is how much this community comes together when we are in a time of crisis hike we have been for the last 36 hours. lastly, again, to the family of madyson middleton, i am sure all of you can relate to this as a
