the future of awesome. live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, thank you for joining us. >> first at 4:00 developing news from santa cruz. it's so sad. new information about the murder of madison middleton she is the 8-year-old girl found in a recycling bin last night. david louie joins us live at the santa cruz apartment complex where she lived. david? >> reporter: this is not only the place where she lived, but where the young boy who is accused of murdering her lived. hanging out all the time, when they were trying to locate maddy. he is now locked up. the apartments, residents come

to grip that is this was an inside job. a 15-year-old boy that madison middleton knew was responsible for her death. >> it appears she was lured to the suspects apartment, willingly. additionally we determined she was murdered inside the suspects apartment. she was then carried down stairs to the recycle bin. >> reporter: police believe it happened an hour after she disappeared and before police were called. at first police and volunteers took part in a search operation. they tried to track her. here, you can see one of the dogs close to the bin where her body would be found but she went undetected. her body was hidden out of view. stage two it turned from search to recovery, the 8-year-old was found. >> a secondary and more thorough canvas of the area revealed her body. >> reporter: the district

it was 80% contained before taking off today. we had this photo of the flair up. the huge plume of smoke is back again. if you happen to be at a safe distance from the fire, share your photos using #abc7now. fire crews are on the scene of a brush fire knocked down in the dublin area. we are on the ground with the latest. melanie? >> reporter: that's right. right now, fir officials are working to mop up what remains of the fire. i'll step out of the way as they work their way down camp park military base. the fire has been burning since 11:30 this morning. there's no terrain, no buildings or homes affected. 750 acres were burning. right now, however the fire is 90% contained at approximately 250 acres. you are looking at video from

earlier today at the fire's height from sky 7. during that, a lot of fire officials stepped in to help with this one including cal fire alameda fire department and san ramon fire department district all assisting u.s. military firefighters working on the base to put out the fire. the fire department told me earlier they have been playing catch up on this one all day. >> they started getting an upper hand on it. thought it was under control. the wind came up and it blew over the containment lines and started burning again. we have been chasing the fire all day long. >> reporter: fire officials say they have not determined the cause, but what they have determined is that a drone did hamper their efforts earlier today while fighting the fire. they are useing this to remind drone enthusiasts not to fly them over fires. abc 7 news. >> melanie, thank you so much.

been declining. today is a spare the air day. tomorrow is the second spare the air day. likely to get a third one on thursday. we expect relatively good air quality friday and saturday across the area. changes on the way after the heat peaks tomorrow. we'll see high clouds coming in on thursday and a little bit of easing up of the heat. humidity is going to increase on thursday. it may not feel comfortable, but should xhin diminish the risk of fire. >> spencer, thank you so much. you can see just how hot it is going to get where you live. we have more information at abc7news.com/app. firefighters in san bruno quickly put out a shed fire this afternoon. it was reported just after 12:30 on haines avenue. we captured this video moments after the first fire truck arrived. the fire destroyed the shed and

set a nearby fence on fire. officials say millions of gallons of water have been lost because of a broken transmission line in san bruno. crews discovered the broken 54-inch pipe around 9:30 last night. it supplies water to the peninsula as part of the water system. no customers are affected at this time. crews don't know how long it will take to repair the pipes. the water is flowing into a creek that runs into the bay. water service has been restored in berkeley this morning. it happened near hurst. the rupture is under investigation. >> an unattended piece of luggage caused a huge headache. sky 7 was over the terminal just

before noon. a bomb squad was called in to make sure there was nothing dangerous inside. they closed the arrivals and the adjacent bar station for 90 minutes while they investigated. they caused trouble with travelers and airlines because of late arriving passengers and crew members. >> what a nightmare. selling cars not only a dangerous profession, but do not sell to a car salesman who went through a terrifying test drive. >> it happened yesterday when a customer asked to test drive a van in concord. that drive ended with a police chase and crash in antioch. amy has the story. >> reporter: it started as a routine test drive. the customer drove the van to his home to show the family with the salesman riding shotgun. >> he went to the house.

his 3-year-old son was in the car saying daddy it's got tvs and leather. it's weird. >> reporter: the sales associate says it turned into a crime after the customer left his home and became threatening. >> the gentleman turned to him saying hey, we are not going back to the dealership. you are coming with me. the salesman said no we need to get back to the dealership. he said no grabbed his shirt and slammed him against the passenger window of the car. of course the salesman was freaked out. then the guy was hitting high speeds and driving crazy. i believe he smashed two cars. >> reporter: when heavy traffic forlsed the driver to stop the salesman jumped out of the car and called police. finding the stolen car wasn't hard. >> on star located the car. that's the best thing about the gm product. >> they had the man's drivers license on record standard procedure before a test drive.

he was booked into jail. the van appears totalled. there are pictures of it at the crash scene. the victim is going to be okay. >> he was shocked, shaken up. my general sales manager went to pick him up himself. you could tell he was frazzled. >> reporter: the victim is off today. he's got a photo lineup to go look at down at the police department. he does plan to return to work. his colleagues say they all plan to continue doing test drives. it's business as usual at the end of the month and they have quotas to make. in concord, amy, abc 7 news. memorial plans for hayward fallen police officer have been finalized. a public viewing will be held tomorrow on mission boulevard in hayward from 4:00 in the afternoon to 9:00 at night. thursday a police motorcade will escort the body to the arena. law enforcement from around the country are expected to attend.

the event is open to the public. burial services are private. he was shot and killed last week in the line of duty. the coast guard says it's optimistic two teenagers missing at sea can be found alive. >> families of the 14-year-old boys not giving up hope even though the boat capsized on sunday. our reporter has the latest on the search. >> reporter: it is a large and intense search up and down the coast of florida. the search for the missing boaters austin stephanos and perry cohen moves toward georgia. a good samaritan spotted a cooler. the tip turned up nothing. >> they had experience on the water. we hoped they had extra personal flotation devices, certainly that will to live. >> reporter: they were last seen friday at a marina fueling for a trip. this video shows the teens

capsized single 19-foot boat discovered in the water about 67 miles east of pons dayce de leon. the cooler was missing from the boat. >> for me when they told me they found the boat capsized it was a relief, in a way, and it was horrible. >> we know the concentration will be so much stronger now. >> last night, hundreds gathered in jupiter inlet and lit lanterns hoping they would find their way home. as the search continues, the criticism is growing after the teens were allowed to set off on their own. their parents say they grew up in the boating community and both are more than capable. abc news washington. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00, a brady cover up. they needed to hide evidence

roger goodell upheld the decision for the four-game suspension suspension. we have the details. >> reporter: upon further review the call off the field scam. the nfl announcing roger goodell upheld the four game suspension on tom brady for his role in deflategate. he sat down with nfl officials to appeal the punishment. the quarterback turned in an impressive appearance giving explanations for the points raised in the deflate gate investigation report. the four-time super bowl champion wasn't able to change goodell's mind. in fact new details emerged to seal his fate. today, the nfl says that goodell upheld the suspension in part because brady had an assistant destroy his cell phone because he knew investigators wanted to

see text messages he changed with staffers. it took months until the quarterback said the phone was destroyed. the four-game ban is har chshharsh. they wanted to make a statement saying the actions constitute integrity of football. brady's first game back will be against the indianapolis colts the team that threw the flag in the first place about the football. brady and the nfl player's union are expected to challenge the league in court. abc news, washington. today, the nation met a woman tackling her way through the gridiron glass ceiling. she is the first to hold a coach position in the nfl. they named her to the coaching staff. it's a six-week internship, but

marks a barrier for women in sports. >> i didn't start playing football to be here. i didn't even dream that it would you saywas possible. i think the beauty of this is that though it's a dream i never could have had now it's a dream other girls can grow up and have. >> she was the first woman to play running back for a professional football team. she signed with the texas revolution of the indoor football league. the mayor of los angeles says their city is ready to host the 2024 olympic games. the u.s. olympic committee severed ties with boston after it struggled to win support for the effort. they will try to find another american city to nominate to host the games. it will have to work quickly. they have to notify the olympic committee by september. san francisco's twitter beat wall street with the earnings

flow of moisture will probably go off to the west. it's possible to work into the bay area. at the moment, not likely. now, friday night, the humidity increases. that will continue into the weekend. it will feel muggy here on friday and saturday as well. overnight, this night look for mostly clear skies. it will be quite mild with low temperatures mainly in the upper 50s to low and mid-60s in some locations around the bay and inland. tomorrow, hot again high temperatures reaching 104. livermore, 107. 102 in concord. 99 in morgan hills. 97 in napa. 88 in oakland, 80 in san francisco. here is the accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow possibly on thursday as well. the heat will ease up thursday inland. even as it cools, it will feel muggy and uncomfortable. >> thank you so much spencer.

we have breaking news from vacaville. a fire burning off elmira road. see all the black smoke coming out there. this is an industrial road there. they closed it between leisure town road and christine drive. we don't have any information about the extend of damage. we spoke to an employee of jim hanson auto motive. officials recommended people nearby leave but there are no mandatory evacuations at this point. coverage will continue on twitter.

how much is a human egg worth? two women are fighting price limits they think are unfair. >> abc news reporter, debra roberts has the story. >> 30-year-old katie riley is one of thousands of women who donated her eggs to help others start a family. >> my reason was financial. >> she was paid 8,000 dallas but says it was far from easy. >> i got very very bloated, i was exhausted, i suffered fainting spells and severe abdomen pain. >> reporter: who controls the price of a human egg? that question at the center of a lawsuit filed by two women on behalf of all donors claiming fertility clinics have unreasonable kept the eggs value. the american society for reproductive medicine sets it standards for the industry. they insist anything more than $5,000 requires justification

police confirm they found the body of 8-year-old madison maddy middleton in a recycling bin last night. police took a 15-year-old boy in custody in connection with the case. the teen is the only suspect and acted alone. david louie tweeted this photo you see here. these candles and drawings were placed outside the police department for maddy. we'll have a live report at 5:00. bay area weather is heating up. spare the air alert is in effect today and another for tomorrow. spencer christian will have the forecast in about ten minutes. a san francisco muni driver is under investigation after mistreating a passenger with disabilities. abc 7 reporter tells us the muni driver refused to pick her up and she filed a complaint. we have the story. carolyn? >> reporter: muni received 5,000

complaints last month. this is the first time someone filed a freedom of information about to get the video and posting it on social media. liz henry is disabled and uses this scooter she takes on muni to get to her high-tech job in san francisco. the 46-year-old says some operators are nice. this video from muni's own camera led to a formal complaint. >> they are hostile. they don't want to mess with the ramp, they don't want to be delayed and feel like i shouldn't be on the bus. >> if the bus is crowded i can't let you on the bus. i'm not putting all these people -- >> reporter: it was 25 years ago the americans with disabilities act was passed, designed to break down barriers and ensure access. all muni vehicles have disabled ramps and operators have training.

minute. she's facing up to eight years in prison if convicted. a spy in prison will be released in november after spending 30 years in prison. he passed suitcases full of u.s. military secrets to israeli handlers back in 1985. he pleaded guilty, sentenced to life in prison. he is 60 years old american citizen but israel granted him citizenship in 1995. some believe he was punished excessively given he spied for a country that is a u.s. ally. last week it was the senate. today, house members got their chance to ask questions about the historic nuclear deal with iran. they didn't hold back peppering officials relentlessly. we have the story. >> reporter: house republicans didn't hold back, they grilled secretary of state john kerry and his team as the committee

absolutely no sunset in this agreement. not in ten years, not in 15 years, not in 20 years, not in 25 years. no sunset ever. >> reporter: broadcast both of kerry's appearances before congressional committees. iran not airing remarks by officials. a top adviser to donald trump apologized today for a controversial comment he made to a reporter for the political website, "the daily beast." someone cannot legally rape their spouse. he said he made the comment in a moment of shock and anger when asked about a rape allegation ivana alleged during court proceedings. ivana trump backed away from that and she backtracked from the claim marital rape is illegal in all 50 states since 1953.

announcer: covering san rafael south bay pleasantton and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. a search is under way for a bag filled with $141,000 in cash after two atm workers accidentally left it behind in new jersey. >> oh boy. >> the oops was caught on camera. take a look. a worker carrying the money in an unmarked bag after carrying it to a family business. he sets it down and walks around to the back of the car before getting in and taking off. >> at some point, the person who was supposed to have the bag realized it wasn't in the car with him. he called back to the office to see if it was still at the curbside where he left it. >> it was not. surveillance shows a man in a white van picking up the bag and

drivers beware of the red light cameras. >> abc 7 news reporter joins us live with the story, vick? >> well, more than 1,000 citations in one month from those cameras over there. and a lot of that money going to the city coughers. intersections have red light cameras, all of them on mill gray avenue. this one, capturing drivers exiting highway 101 southbound with the most prolific giving out 595 citations in june alone, most of them for making a rolling right turn. >> she stopped and then she, you know made a right, like what you normally do.

a simple right turn. >> made a right stop at the stop sign and got a ticket. >> reporter: mike showed his ticket. it will cost more than 400 bucks. a number of citations in june, 1,555. more than any month since the cameras were installed here nine years ago. that's according to statistics analyzed by highwayrobbery.net. they track highway cameras all over california. 90% are for turns, mostly rolling rights, violations that cost the least number of collisions but make the most money in fines. senator jerry hill reduced fines failed. cities should not use the cameras to make money. >> they look at every opportunity to increase revenue in situations where they are not dangerous. >> reporter: question how much has the city made from the cameras and are there fewer
