>> santa cruz is shaken to the core over the murder of 8-year-old madison "maddie" middleton. >> it feels like if one of your kids kills your other kids that's how we feel as parents in this community. >> police say a 15-year-old boy who lives at the art center killed fellow resident maddie luring her into his apartment. >> she knew him. i think she was eight years old and she had a reasonable amount of trust in him. >> they believe the teen watched them search and that maddie was likely dead before anyone knew she was missing. >> he was nearby when maddie was located. he was subsequently taken into custody. >> maddie attended the boys and girls club this summer and today children made cards for her family. >> there is a lot of questions from our youth mostly why did this happen and how could somebody do this? those are tough questions to answer. >> police are waiting on autopsy results before saying

is live in solano county. alan? >> cal fire had an 80% containment on an almost defeated wildfire until the winds whipped it back up this afternoon. >> the winds have shifted to a northerly direction and that tends to be hot and dry wind. >> after nearly a week of battling, cal fire air tankers and helicopters were at it again. >> about a half hour ago we can see flames all over the whole ridge. >> evacuations on pleasant valley road and mixed canyon are mandatory but many residents refuse to leave. >> since they saved all of the houses last time that were in the middle of the fire these people are not that worried about it. >> some team say the last evacuation was too much of a hassle, so they are waiting it out. >> i have seven horses back there. we have four kids here and four dogs. it is easier for now. >> for those who made another hasty retreat animal control workers were busy rescuing their pets.

land. sky 7hd was over a brushfire where two drones in ter feared with water drops. the fire officials say drones pose a major risk to pilots and the collision could result in major damage. flames burned 250 acres. the smoke could be seen from throughout the tri-valley. a hayward woman faces charges in the death of her mother. she was arrested at the bart station and officers were responding to calls about a fight involving her and her daughter. the investigation lead them to her parents' house where they discovered her mother's body. new details tonight. search crews recovered the body of a man who disappeared while swimming in the russian river. search divers found the body of the 40-year-old man who disappeared in the area of sunset beach. he was visiting from southern california. his family members contacted police last night when they lost sight of him. >> crews hope to have a broken water line that spilled 15 million gallons of water fixed

covering daly city, los gatos and all of the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> check out this scene in southern california. a tree crashed on to a group of children in pasadena today injuring eight. two critically. the tree is a 75-year-old pine that sits on the ground of the kids space children's museum. they were under doing arts and crafts when there was a loud crack. the children ran, but some didn't get out of the way in time. >> i have two little kids myself. my heart was beating and it was just -- youy -- you know thinking about my own kids. i went out there and i tried to save as many as i could. >> investigators said there was very little wind. they believe the tree may have dried out during the on going drought. >> there is growing outrage worldwide after a beloved lion

was killed by a dentist on an african safari. now the dentist is facing backlash that is costing him his livelihood. here is david wright with the story. >> cecil the lion was the star attraction at zimbabwe's national park until this minnesota dentist came along looking for the hemming way trophy photo. >> gentlemen, there is a war -- >> they allegedly poached the lion shooting him with a bow and arrow. now the hunter is being hunted himself. his dental practice seen here in this promotional video shutdown today. people leaving stuffed animals at the door. his yelp entry swamped with outrage. "you are a horrible human being" another called him a monster. he issued a statement i had no idea that the lion i took down was a known local favorite insisting he relied on the expertise of his guides.

those guides now facing poaching charges in africa. this dentist an angry roar. abc news, new york. >> happening now, a bay area man hopes to be the first ever to swim from the golden gate bridge to the fairlawn islands. she was in belvedere and prepared to leave for the historic swim. at any moment the resident will begin the 30-mile trek to the fairlawn islands. the waters are frigid and the freeding grounds for enormous great white sharks. he swam the english channel but this is colder and more dangerous. he told us he is ready. >> i trained for much colder water. there were a couple of jellyfish when we went out a few weeks ago but i am not worried about any of that. i just wanted to get in the water and get this swim done. >> the swim will take 13 to 18 hours of successful -- if successful. he hopes to celebrate with a cold beer. you can track his progress

the haze. we will see the hazy skies again tomorrow. exploratorium giving you good visibility right now. not the case as we head into tomorrow. once again another spare the air has been declared. poor air quality inland. moderate for the rest of you. thursday is still remaining poor across parts of the bay area. the inland east bay in particular, but a little improvement along the coast. friday and saturday, you will be able to breathe easier. it is an absolutely clear view of san francisco. heat peaks in land tomorrow. it is another spare the air day. we are looking at record highs possible for a second straight day. satellite-radar showing what is over us. hot air mass in place and that is not going to nudge right away. tomorrow another day of heat. thursday things start to change and not only will we see an increase in fog, but we will watch the monsoon moisture come in. as the humidity increases it will make it feel sticky not just friday but saturday as well. be prepared. we may be tracking a couple of showers as we head toward that

friday time period. right now we are keeping them off. there isn't complete agreement with the models. tomorrow morning patches of fog around santa cruz, monterey and pacifica. most other areas are clear. low to mid60s for the coast and in the 50s. and then tomorrow afternoon make sure you have your sunscreen. 98 in the south bay in morgan hill 96 gilroy and 95 san jose. 93 in sunnyvale and 99 in los gatos. it will be pretty hot. mid-nineties red rood city, loss altos, you don't have air conditioning it will be a rough one. 73 in pacifica and as you know on the peninsula in san francisco many homes are not equiped with air conditioning. downtown san francisco 80 degrees. a little fog. daly city 73. in the north bay, 100 in santa rosa. 95 san rafael. vallejo 90 degrees east bay. 88 oakland. 92 in union city. newark, 90 in hayward and 94 in fremont. inland spots will be on the steamy side.
