[ bleep ] tell you? >> you know what, man, you can deal with it yourself. i'm not going to deal with this. >> he's dying. >> reporter: that's when the phone line apparently goes dead. officials say units were on the way to the scene before the call was dissected disconnected. but chavez silver who dreamed about flying in the air force, passed away. the dispatcher on administrative leave. the department now investigating. >> the albuquerque fire chief says they take this obvious allegation very, very seriously and they're still going to continue the investigation. but boy, what a heartbreak. just a guy that everyone i've read everything about it just so much promise, and just they believe wrong place, wrong time. >> but the dispatcher, i mean, everybody has a bad moment. some people aren't allowed to. you help somebody out in a desperate situation. they get short with you. they get snappy. they're in a traumatic situation. you're the professional supposed to help them out. everybody has a bad moment. sometimes you can't. >> it's heartbreaking. 911 operators are trained to

well that former prison employee is now providing new details about how she helped two convicted murderers escape. >> joyce mitchell admitted her role in the plot as part of a plea deal. she also confessed to a relationship with one inmate. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: joyce "tilly" mitchell in snackles stripes and tears, pleading guilty to helping the two murderers escape. >> she was swept off her feet a bit for a period. and then when she realized who she was dealing with, everything changed. >> reporter: in newly released statements, mitchell describes a deepening friendship with inmate richard matt. "he treated me with respect and was nice to me," she says "he made me feel special." that relationship turning sexual. "inmate matt grabbed me and kissed me." mitchell also admits sending naked pictures to the other prisoner, david sweat, telling police matt told her "we were all going to be together." >> she got in over her head and into something that she never should have started, but she did, and she's paying the price.

>> reporter: mitchell ads mitts smuggling hacksaw blades chisels, a punch tool and a screwdriver to the prisoners, hiding them inside frozen hamburger meat. matt giving her two pills to drug her husband, lyle, on the day of the escape. they referred to lyle as the glitch. the plan, joyce mitchell would pick up the escapees and drive back home where they would kill her husband, but she gets cold feet. and when she doesn't show up, the men escape into the deep rugged woods, launching the three-week manhunt. joyce mitchell, soon under arrest as we track down her husband. >> what do you make of the reports that she was trying to have you killed? >> reporter: lyle mitchell visiting his wife in jail. and why did she do it? "i was caught up in the fantasy," she says. "i enjoyed the attention, the feeling both of them gave me and the thought of a different life." joyce mitchell will be sentenced in september. she faces up to seven years behind bars. her lawyer says she knows she made a horrible mistake. gio benitez, abc news, new york. authorities in texas have

released jailhouse video of sandra bland, the young, black woman found hanging in her cell. bland can be seen getting her mug shot taken, filling out forms and going in and out of her cell over a three-day period. the footage is intended to dispel rumors that she was dead before arriving at the jail. authorities say such conspiracy theories about bland have led to death threats against county officials. the mother of colorado theater shooter james holmes is expected to take the stand today in an effort to save his life. yesterday his father recounted his childhood with birthday parties, soccer games, family outings. he says it wasn't until 2011 that he began to notice that something was not quite right about his son. jurors are deciding whether holmes should get the death penalty for the 2012 shootings. a florida man arrested for an isis-inspired bomb plot. they say harlem suarez wanted to bury a remote-controlled bomb on a key west beach and detonate it. he also talked about planting bombs in south florida.

suarez came under fbi scrutiny after he posted pro isis comments on facebook. well, outrage is growing over the death of a beloved african lion hunted down and killed by an american. a dentist from the minneapolis area who reportedly paid $50,000 to strike the deadly blow. here's more from abc's david wright. >> reporter: cecil the lion was the star attraction at zimbabwe's national park until this minnesota dentist came along, looking for that hemingway trophy photo. >> the gentleman was an american called walter james palmer. >> reporter: on july 6th dr. walter palmer and his guides allegedly poached the lion shooting him with a bow and arrow. now the hunter is being hunted himself. his dental practice, seen here in this promotional video, shut down, people leaving stuffed animals at the door. his yelp entry, swamped with outrage. "you are a horrible human being," posted one reviewer. another called him a monster.

palmer issued a statement -- "i had no idea that the lion i took down was a known local favorite," insisting he relied on the expertise of his guides. those guides now facing poaching charges in africa. the dentist, a worldwide outcry. david wright, abc news, new york. well, the coast guard has broadened the search for those two lost boys at sea. the florida boys here. no new clues have turned up since their overturned boat was found sunday but officials believe it's still possible they could find them alive. we're talking about perry cohen and austin stephenos. haven't been seen since they set out for a fishing trip friday. crews are scouring into the waters off georgia and south carolina. some private pilots have also joined the search. firefighters in california battling not just the flames but the searing heat and high winds, too. new fires erupting every day. this one in castro valley. firefighters on the line at every one of them, taking back

one foot at a time. abc's matt gutman taking it in from the air. >> reporter: that new wildfire in castro valley, firefighters chasing the fiery periphery, soon engulfed by smoke themselves. across the state, the fires unrelenting. 20 major burns, about 2,000 structures threatened. and on the lines, over 11,000 exhausted firefighters. here at the lowell fire, containment up to 30%, but still an uphill battle. we joined cal fire to survey the so-called air attack from a helicopter. 15 aircraft buzzing the tree tops, dumping water just feet from smoldering trees, then dropping down again and again for new loads of water, all of this showing the scope of a fire like this. and in the 45 minutes that we were in that helicopter, cal fire responded to five new fires in northern california alone. and with that wind that you can probably hear against my mike and the soaring heat here rough road ahead for firefighters. matt gutman abc news, grass valley california.

an oklahoma daycare center has shut down after allegations that two little boys suffered severe sunburns while in its care. the boys' mother posted these pictures of the children's injuries on facebook. some are so graphic, we can't even show them to you right here. she says her 5 and 7-year-old sons were left outside at a splash park last friday without any sunscreen or shirts. >> they were supposed to take care of them and they did not. and that's the bottom line. >> the boys are being treated at a burn center in texas. the state of oklahoma is investigating that daycare center. the hottest weather this summer has settled in here in the northeast. temperatures in new york will be back in the mid-90s today and higher than that in parts of new jersey. cooling centers have been set up across the area and people are basically being told not to do anything strenuous outdoors. parts of the northeast can expect more hot weather, dangerous heat indexes and poor air quality today. gusty winds, high temps in california's fire zone. thunderstorms from chicago to

the ntsb says human error the ntsb says human error was to blame for this deadly crash of a virgin galactic spacecraft last october. investigators found that the co-pilot unlocked a braking system early that caused the spacecraft to tear apart. the co-pilot died in the accident. the pilot managed to survive it. virgin galactic has said it hopes to resume test flights later this year with a new aircraft. the faa trying to sort out who is to blame for a passenger plane nearly running out of gas in midair. >> the pilot with 144 passengers on board had less than five minutes of fuel left when he tried to land and was told the airport was closed. abc's jim avila on this emergency that came next. >> reporter: a rare and serious midair scare. an allegiant airlines md-80 on a flight from las vegas to fargo, north dakota, carrying 150, less than five minutes from falling

out of the sky as the fuel gauge registers near empty. >> we're circling fargo. we don't have enough fuel to go anywhere else. >> allegiant 426. roger. there will be a window opening in about 20 minutes for a landing. >> yeah, i don't have 20 minutes. >> reporter: an exchange you never want to hear. the pilots had been delayed on takeoff from vegas and arrived after the fargo airport had been closed by a navy blue angels practice that had been planned months before. the air controller directing him to another airport unless he declared an emergency. >> there is grand forks airport which is 70 miles to the north. >> listen we're at bingo fuel here in probably three to four minutes and i've got to come in and land. >> reporter: bingo is a military term that means running on empty. >> there were two mistakes here. one, nobody picked up the blues were practicing. and two, they didn't leave themselves enough gas in case there was another problem at

pilot bull. >> you bring a fight to donald trump, he's going to take that fight. >> reporter: this time cohen the one fighting scolding a reporter who asked about trump's ugly divorce from ex-wife ivana. in her 1919 divorce deposition, ivana trump reportedly accused her husband of rape. but cohen tells the reporter that "understand by the very definition you cannot rape your spouse. it is true, you cannot rape your spouse and there's very clear case law." but marital rape is illegal in all 50 states. cohen also issuing this threat. "you write a story that has mr. trump's story in it with the word rape and i'm going to mess your life up." ivana defending her ex -- "i have recently read some comments attributed to me at a time of very high tension during my divorce from donald. the story is totally without merit." trump pointing to that statement. >> there's no rape there. believe me. that happens. you don't issue a statement like that. and she just issued it which i

must tell you, i thought was terrific. >> reporter: but trump distancing himself from his longtime adviser, saying he disagreed with cohen's comments. tom llamas, abc news, new york. >> cohen himself is apologizing for his statements. says he made what he calls an inarticulate comment. well the coast guard has broadened the search for two florida boys lost at sea. no new clues have turned up since their overturned boat was found sunday but officials believe it is still possible to find them alive. perry cohen and austin stephanos haven't been seen since they set out for a fishing trip on friday. crews now scouring into the waters off georgia and south carolina and some private pilots have also joined the search. well tom brady and the rest of the new england patriots report for training camp today, just one day after brady's four-game suspension for his connection to that deflategate scandal was upheld. the nfl commissioner refused his appeal largely because of new evidence in the case. details now from abc's ryan smith. >> reporter: the blockbuster reveal, what we never knew. new england patriots superstar

quarterback tom brady watched by 120 million win the super bowl had his assistant destroy his cell phone right before meeting with league investigators, according to the nfl. in this 20-page ruling, commissioner roger goodell slamming brady, claiming he attempted to conceal evidence of his personal involvement in the tampering scheme. the commissioner also revealing that destroyed phone contained nearly 10,000 text messages with many individuals over four months. during that time, brady was investigated for his role in deflating those footballs. with the phone gone and text messages wiped out, his suspension will stand. one-fourth of the season he will sit out. in january, brady told reporters when asked if he was a cheater -- >> is tom brady a cheater? >> i don't believe so. i mean i feel like i've always played within the rules. >> reporter: responding to the commissioner's decision brady's agent, don yee firing back calling the appeals process a sham. and about brady turning over

electronic data claiming "tom was completely transparent," and the nfl players association tells abc news they'll appeal the ruling in federal court. >> the agent calling the investigation a sham. he also said that he provided the commissioner with an unprecedented amount of electronic data, saying they don't think any private citizen would have agreed to provide anyone with the amount of information that tom was willing to reveal. >> reporter: ryan smith, abc news, new york. chaos at a summer day camp in southern california as a massive tree came crashing down on a group of small children. eight kids were injured, two of them rushed to the hospital in critical condition, as parents, all of them watching in horror. it happened in a park in pasadena near the children's museum museum just as everyone was lining up to go home. the victims ranging from 6 to 8 years old. the tree was 75 feet tall. it's unclear what brought it down. new wildfire evacuations in california this morning. dangerously high heat and wind gusts reignited a fire that crews had nearly extinguished up in napa valley.

>> reporter: 8-year-old zion harvey was all smiles as he walked the out for a news conference at the children's hospital, announcing his successful operation. he is the first child to receive a double hand transplant. he's now undergoing intensive hand therapy, but overall, says he feels -- >> happy. >> reporter: zion had to have his hands and feet amputated several years ago due to an infection. he now walks with prosthetic legs and had learned to live without hands. he also had a kidney transplant in the past so he was already on antirejection medication. this made him a good candidate for a hand transplant. his mother says ultimately, the decision was his. >> it was no more of a risk than a kidney transplant. so i felt like i was willing to take that risk for him, if he wanted it. >> we've rehearsed. we know our steps. >> reporter: the surgery was a team effort by 40 doctors, nurses and speciality staff from chop, penn medicine and

it's wednesday, july 29th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now" with t.j. holmes and reena ninan. good morning, everyone. we're going to start this half hour with the defending super bowl champion new england patriots. >> yep, team reporting to training camp today, a day after quarterback tom brady's four-game deflategate suspension was upheld by nfl commissioner roger goodell. the players union now vowing to appeal the case in court, federal court. details from abc's karen travers. >> reporter: upon further review, the call off the field stands. the nfl announcing that commissioner roger goodell has upheld the four-game suspension on patriots quarterback tom brady for his role in deflategate. brady sat down with nfl officials last month to appeal his punishment. analysts say the superstar quarterback turned in an impressive performance at the ten-hour hearing, giving sincere answers and explanations for the points raised in the nfl's deflategate investigation

eight kids were injured, two of them rushed to the hospital in critical condition as parents watched in horror. it happened at a park in pasadena near a children's museum just as everyone was lining up to go home. the victims range from 6 to 8 years old. it's unclear what brought down the 75-foot tree. >> the search for two florida boys who vanished at sea is intensifying with the chance of finding them alive going down with every hour that passes. the coast guard has extended the search area. private pilots who have been moved by this story have volunteered to look for the teenagers. we get more now from abc's kendis gibson. >> reporter: the search area for perry cohen and austin stephanos has now extended further north from jupiter, florida, to charleston south carolina. a navy ship and coast guard vessels scanning for any sign of the 14-year-olds. on sunday, their overturned boat found 67 miles off the coast of central florida. >> nobody's on board. >> reporter: aiding the rescue effort, this c-130 hercules, a military transport plane, but

trying to locate the teens from the air is no small feat. members of the coast guard typically spend eight-hour-plus shifts, searching for tiny objects at speeds of more than 200 miles an hour. >> because you never know when something's going to happen and you need to be prepared. >> reporter: the 14-year-olds left friday on a fishing trip but after reaching the atlantic ocean, a powerful line of storms moved through, their parents holding out for a miracle. >> i think between the two of them, they work as a team. they're going to be found and they're going to be okay. >> reporter: kendis gibson, abc news, jupiter, florida. the new york prison employee who helped two convicted murderers escape could spend seven years behind bars. joyce mitchell entered a plea deal yesterday, admitting that she smuggled hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch tool and a screwdriver to the prisoners. mitchell described a friendship with inmate richard matt, which then turned sexual. also, she sent naked photos to the other inmate, david sweat. >> she got in over her head into

something that she never should have started, but she did, and she's paying the price. >> part of the plan was also to kill mitchell's husband on the day of the escape, but she apparently got cold feet and never showed up. matt was killed while on the run. sweat back in custody now. well a florida man has been charged with an isis-inspired plot to bomb a busy beach. authorities say harlem suarez came to the fbi's attention through his facebook post praising isis. court documents show suarez told an undercover agent that he wanted to make a nail-filled backpack bomb and then bury it on a beach in his hometown of key west and detonate it remotely. the spy at the center of the biggest espionage cases in recent american history will soon be a free man. jonathan pollard has been granted parole after spending 30 years in prison. pollard was a navy intelligence analyst when he was convicted of spying for israel. supporters say he was excessively punished, given that he spied for a u.s. ally. but critics say he's a traitor who disclosed damaging secrets.

pollard, now 60, will be released in november. a former navy s.e.a.l. filed a complaint claiming he was the victim of homophobic bullying while working as a cia contractor. fred joepz is jones is his name. says things got so bad, he feared for his life. he spoke to our brian ross. >> hello. my name is fred jones. >> reporter: a secret operative for the cia in afghanistan recorded this cell phone message three weeks ago, in case he did not make it out alive. >> the reason i'm making this is in the event that something happens to me. >> reporter: but brett jones, a former navy s.e.a.l. and now a private contractor, tells abc news that the people he feared were not the terrorists, but his own fellow cia operatives who turned on him after they learned he was gay. >> i walked into the team room and heard one of the guys talking to another guy. he said something something he's a [ bleep ]. >> reporter: when no one was around, jones took this cell phone video of the powerpoint for a high-risk, upcoming cia

seriously, especially given the cia's position of zero tolerance against such behavior aimed at a man who again and again put his life on the line for his country. brian ross, abc news, new york. so, an american dentist is under fire for killing a beloved lion in africa. cecil the lion was the star attraction at a national park in zimbabwe. dr. walter palmer shot him with a bow and arrow earlier this month after allegedly luring him from a protected area. palmer issued a statement, saying he had no idea the lion was a local favorite. he is now facing poaching charges in zimbabwe, and american conservationists are outraged. >> the u.s. government right now is considering whether or not to protect lions under the u.s. endangered species act. so, fingers crossed that this is done in the near future. it will stop these situations from at the very least bringing that trophy back here. >> palmer's minnesota dental practice is closed for now. he reportedly paid $50,000 for the hunt. he already has a felony record

you can deal with it yourself. i'm not going to deal with this, okay? >> no, he's dying! >> reporter: that's when the phone line apparently goes dead. officials say units were on the way to the albuquerque scene before the call was disconnected. but chavez-silver, the teen who dreamed about flying in the air force, passed away. the dispatcher who answered the call on administrative leave, the department now investigating. >> the albuquerque fire chief says they take this obvious allegation very, very seriously and they're still going to continue the investigation. but boy, what a heartbreak. just a guy that everyone, i've read that everything about it just so much promise. and they believe wrong place, wrong time. >> but the dispatcher, i mean, everybody has a bad moment. but you know some people aren't allowed to. you just help somebody out. they're in a desperate situation, okay? they get short with you. they get snappy. they're in a traumatic situation. you're the professional supposed to help them out. everybody has a bad moment. but sometimes, gosh, you can't -- >> it's heartbreaking. 911 operators are trained to keep you talking even when

well, that former prison employee is now providing new details about how she helped two convicted murderers escape. >> joyce mitchell admitted her role in the plot as part of a plea deal. she also confessed to a relationship with one inmate. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: joyce "tilly" mitchell in stripes, shackles and tears, pleading guilty to helping the two murderers escape. >> she was swept off her feet a bit for a period. and then when she realized who she was dealing with, everything changed. >> reporter: in newly released statements, mitchell describes a deepening friendship with inmate richard matt. "he treated me with respect and was nice to me," she says, "he made me feel special." that relationship turning sexual. "inmate matt grabbed me and kissed me." mitchell also admits sending naked pictures to the other prisoner, david sweat, telling police matt told her, "we were all going to be together." >> she got in over her head and into something that she never should have started, but she did, and she's paying the price. >> reporter: mitchell ads mitts

"i was caught up in the fantasy," she says. "i enjoyed the attention, the feeling both of them gave me and the thought of a different life." joyce mitchell will be sentenced in september. she faces up to seven years behind bars. her lawyer says she knows she made a horrible mistake. gio benitez, abc news, new york. authorities in texas have released jailhouse video of

sandra bland, the young, black woman found hanging in her cell. bland can be seen getting her mug shot taken, filling out forms and going in and out of her cell over a three-day period. the footage is intended to dispel rumors that she was dead before arriving at the jail. authorities say such conspiracy theories about bland have led to death threats against county officials. the mother of colorado theater shooter james holmes is expected to take the stand today in an effort to save his life. yesterday his father recounted his childhood with birthday parties, soccer games, family outings. he says it wasn't until 2011 that he began to notice that something was not quite right about his son. jurors are deciding whether holmes should get the death penalty for the 2012 shootings. a florida man has been arrested for what the fbi described as an isis-inspired bomb plot. they say harlem suarez wanted to bury a remote-controlled bomb on a key west beach and detonate it. he also talked about planting bombs in south florida. suarez came under fbi scrutiny

had no idea that the lion i took down was a known local favorite," insisting he relied on the expertise of his guides. those guides now facing poaching charges in africa. the dentist, a worldwide outcry. david wright, abc news, new york. well, the coast guard has broadened the search for those two lost boys at sea. the florida boys here. no new clues have turned up since their overturned boat was found sunday, but officials believe it's still possible they could find them alive. we're talking about perry cohen and austin stephanos. haven't been seen since they set out for a fishing trip friday. crews are now also scouring into the waters off georgia and south carolina. some private pilots have also joined the search. firefighters in california battling not just the flames but the searing heat and high winds, too. new fires erupting every day. this one in castro valley. firefighters on the line at every one of them, taking back one foot at a time. abc's matt gutman taking it in

from the air. >> reporter: that wildfire in castro valley firefighters chasing the fiery periphery, soon engulfed by smoke themselves. across the state, the fires unrelenting. 20 major burns, about 2,000 structures threatened. and on the lines, over 11,000 exhausted firefighters. here at the lowell fire, containment up to 30%, but still an uphill battle. we joined cal fire to survey the so-called air attack from a helicopter. 15 aircraft buzzing the tree tops, dumping water just feet from smoldering trees, then dropping down again and again for new loads of water, all of this showing the scope of a fire like this. and in the 45 minutes that we were in that helicopter, cal fire responded to five new fires in northern california alone. and with that wind that you can probably hear against my mike and the soaring heat here, rough road ahead for firefighters. matt gutman, abc news, grass valley, california. an oklahoma daycare center

has shut down after allegations that two little boys suffered severe sunburns while in its care. the boys' mother posted these pictures of the children's injuries on facebook. some are so graphic, we can't even show them to you right here. she says her 5 and 7-year-old sons were left outside at a splash park last friday without any sunscreen or shirts. >> they were supposed to take care of them and they did not. and that's the bottom line. >> the boys are being treated at a burn center in texas. the state of oklahoma is investigating that daycare center. the hottest weather this summer has settled in here in the northeast. temperatures in new york will be back in the mid-90s today and higher than that in parts of new jersey. cooling centers have been set up across the area, and people are basically being told not to do anything strenuous outdoors. parts of the northeast can expect more hot weather, dangerous heat indexes and poor air quality today. gusty winds, high temps in california's fire zone. thunderstorms from chicago to the eastern great lakes.

the ntsb says human error was to blame for this deadly crash of a virgin galactic spacecraft last october. investigators found that the co-pilot unlocked a braking system early that caused the spacecraft to tear apart. the co-pilot died in the accident. the pilot managed to survive it. virgin galactic has said it hopes to resume test flights later this year with a new aircraft. the faa is trying to sort out who is to blame for a passenger plane nearly running out of gas in midair. >> the pilot with 144 passengers on board had less than five minutes of fuel left when he tried to land and was told the airport was closed. abc's jim avila on this emergency that came next. >> reporter: a rare and serious midair scare. an allegiant airlines md-80 on a flight from las vegas to fargo, north dakota, carrying 150, less than five minutes from falling
