bear in life and a beast on the baseball field. >> reporter: inside tony jackson's garage a place to reminisce. >> big memories. >> reporter: while many new sergeant scott lunger in his police uniform jackson got to know him as this one. after his police shift ended around 2:00 a.m. jackson says he would nap in his car before games began at 9:00. >> many times we would have to wake him up. >> reporter: once up he was on. >> he was a beast, yes. he played hard. >> reporter: jackson lovingly calls him dolpp. the morning sergeant lunger died jackson texted him and then again by his name. >> scott, please answer me. >> reporter: silence.

is going to get where you live with the abc 7 weather app for your smart phone. it is free. we have more information at abc7news.com/apps. sky 7 hd showing the after math of a horrific accident. sheriff's deputies say the woman behind the wheel of a toyota corolla accidently hit and killed her husband earlier today. lyanne melendez live at the chp headquarters with the story. >> you know, we know that these things happen and chp officers reported before they are just horrible. this is a terrible accident. now, chp is still investigating this incident but they are pretty sure that this was an accident saying the wife made a mistake between the two pedals. according to chp investigators, 84-year-old yvonne cutrel was trying to reposition the car

with the garage door open. her husband was giving her instructions. then she accidently hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. because the husband was in front of the car he was run over and pinned beneath the toyota corolla. these ground shots show how the car went through the back wall of the garage and into the backyard stopping in front of a pile of pipes and scrap metal. >> regardless of age or gender it is an unfortunate set of circumstances. this truly is an accident while it is still being investigated. certainly drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this related investigation but our condolences. we certainly feel for the family. >> reporter: the husband was alive and talking in the ambulance but died at the medical center. he was shy of his 90th birthday.

authorities still haven't released the name of a driver killed in a four-car crash on 880 in oakland in the southbound direction near high street around 5:00. sky 7 hd was over the scene. the chp says the crash happened when a driver trying avoid a stalled vehicle was hit by two other vehicles. that crash shut down multiple lanes more than two hours. melinda hague revealed she is stepping down effective september 16789 hague has served since being nominated by president obama and confirmed by the senate. the current term expires in late 2016. at new president could select his or her own u.s. attorney for our region in 2017. this piece of debris might help explain the mysterious disappearance of malaysia airlines flight 370.

investigators believe it is a wing flag from a boeing 777. it washed up on a french island in the western indian ocean. the flight vanished after taking off in march of last year. the flight had 239 people on board. he once owned a spot on the list of the world's most wanted men. today the white house confirmed the death of taliban leader omar. >> there are questions over why officials left omar's death a secret for more than two years. >> reporter: one of the world's most wanted terrorists confirmed dead, the taliban leader who was osama bin laden's chief ally. >> we believe reports of his death are credible. >> reporter: the afghan government confirming he died two years ago the exact cause of death remains unknown but a former senior taliban official tells abc news he died from tuberculosis and was buried

. the department of fish and wild life is investigating a large oil slick spotted about 1,000 feet from a beach in santa barbara. officials aren't yet calling it an oil spill but they say the size of the oil sheen seems to indicate it is more than just natural oil seepage. bay area officials have talked with los angeles about a possible joint bid for 2024 summer olympic games. according to san francisco chronicle giants ceo talked about a joint proposal to split the games. led the bay area's initial bid.

the building combines six maintenance facilities into one. it has sky lights and motion censors. and the water is recycled. it also is used to decorate the bicycle path along the eastern span of the bridge. if you plan on crossing the bay bridge this weekend you won't be able to ride bart between san francisco and oakland because bart trains will not run through the trans bay tube on saturday and sunday. beware. crews are performing major track repairs that require bart to shut down the tube. shuttle buses shut down with the 19th street station. full service will resume on monday morning. now to an effort to get men to understand the harassment known as cat calling. >> a new video shows a group of men and shows what their girlfriends face as they walk down the street every day. >> you making me --

side just after 4:00 this morning. it had a lot of dry fuel to keep it going and a home on deer hill road in its path. >> right when i saw it i sprinted down stairs for my dog and woke up my parents. >> reporter: the family got out safely including nemeo, the family dog and the home was saved. >> it was scary. two pretty big fires. they have done a great job. >> reporter: firefighters were bracing for a hot tough day when this broke out before the sun came up with today's possible record heat they are worried this won't be the only fire they battle. >> we normally don't see these types of fires until we are in the late september, early october timeframe and we are concerned. we are already starting to see signs of fatigue.

>> reporter: this week firefighters are already worn out from helping with the fires. >> one of the crews that responded to that fire yesterday they were out there for six or seven hours came back and were back in the district about 10:00 last night. that happens to be the station that was -- >> reporter: they got this fire done. they kept it to eight acres and no one was hurt. >> it was really scary. it was really scary. but i knew it was going to be all right. >> reporter: this fire is obviously out but firefighters are leaving their hose lines out in case. they don't want to take anything for granted in this hot, dry weather. these are treacherous times on l.a. county beaches. life guards rescued more than 400 people yesterday as a result of high surf and powerful rip currents and dozens of people were caught up and no one was seriously hurt and warning beach goers to expect dangerous rip

currents through friday as tropical storms head into the region. we are learning about terrifying moments after a tree came tumbling down injuring eight kids. >> people were running around screaming. >> so scary for these little ones. two remain in critical condition. investigators say there was very little wind and believe the drought is to blame in the accident. there is still no sign of the two florida teens who disappeared on a fishing trip. coast guard crews extended the search area northward off the south carolina coast. 14-year-old perry cohen have been missing. their capsized boat was found sunday. officials say they are still hopeful they will find them. they remain quiet through their son's murder trial. now the parents of james holmes are breaking their silence. today they tried to convince a jury that their son deserves

life in prison and not the death penalty. >> is james holmes your son? >> yes he is. >> reporter: for a second day james holmes parents testified in court. holmes mother breaking down on the stand. >> he has a serious mental illness, schizophrenia chose him. he didn't choose it. and i still love my son cht. >> reporter: the same jury that convicted the 27 year old of killing 12 people inside this colorado theater and injuring 70 others is deciding whether he deserves the death penalty. >> you never had an inkling of the arsenal that your son was amassing in his apartment in aurora? >> no. he didn't tell us anything about what he was thinking of doing. >> reporter: in the weeks leading up robert holmes exchanged several e-mails and phone calls with his son who just dropped out of school. >> trying to determine whether he was depressed. >> reporter: adamant they had no

idea their son had homicidal thoughts holmes' parents insists he never harmed anyone until july 20 2012. other family and friends of james holmes testified he was polite, shy and never sought attention. death sentences must be unanimous. if all 12 jurors don't agree holmes will spend the rest of his life in prison. and we take another live look inside the hayward police department right now where we are awaiting a news conference on more information on the funeral which is set tomorrow for officer scott lunger. we are told that it should be happening any moment now so we will keep an eye on it and w

department psychologist has been by our side as we have worked through truly the darkest hour in our police department's history. for that i am so grateful. a lot of people are asking what can they do? what can the community do? what can people do? you can come out and support sergeant scott lunger tomorrow in the procession and at the celebration of life. the procession starts tomorrow at 8:45 in the morning and so many of our community members are so loving and so supportive and we hope that they will literally line the streets to support scott and his family as they proceed to the oracle arena where we will talk pause with our brothers and sisters community members, friends supporters, people who care about public safety and know

department. and so like any daughter who just lost their rock they are getting through it breath by breath. >> how many officers are in the department and how many will be there tomorrow? >> we are just about 200 sworn and about 150 professional staff so we are about 350 strong. most everybody in the police department plans to attend the funeral. the internment is private but for the police family. and the few people that are not attending the funeral is because they want to honor scott by being present in our police and

celebrity wife shop followed by abc 7 news at 11:00. a petition demanding justice for the lion killed by a dentist garnered more than 400,000 signatures and the dentist is in hiding. marcy gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: outside of the dental office in minnesota and around the world outrage over this man walter james palmer killing this beloved protected lion during a hunting trip. cecil the lion reportedly lured out of the national park by palmer and his guides earlier this month. the consertration task force saying he did not have a permit yet shot the lion with a bow and arrow tracking him for more than a day before finishing him off. the bbc saying the hunters tried to remove the gps collar
