our abc 7 facebook page. >> on to other news for now. in san francisco, two police officers are recovering this afternoon after a brawl with a hit and run suspect. and that man later died in police custody. >> this all happened this morning on lombard street in the marina district. that's where we found carolyn tyler who joins us live. carolyn in. >> good afternoon. we do not have identifications yet of anyone involved in the incident. but one sign of just how violent that struggle was is that toppled fence over there. >> the incident began at 5:30 this morning on richardson avenue near the golden gate bridge. a van rear-ended a bmw pushing it into parked cars. police say when the crash victim approached the van's driver, he was incoherent. >> he was speaking something about god, god's will. >> the police chief says the victim ran, calling 911 while the suspects followed. a few blocks away at lumbard and

pierce, two female officers tried to detain the man. from a witness describes as about 6'4", at least, 250 pounds. >> one officer was thrown to the ground and suffered head injuries. another was punched multiple times by the suspect. >> police scanners alerted other officers to the brawl. so violent it toppled this fence. >> two injured officers. >> the man then pounded on the door of this restaurant but officers arrived and handcuffed him at some point while he was down, he stopped breathing. a guest at the surf motel next door said he saw the unsuccessful effort to revive him. >> they were doing cpr. think were doing all the right things. >> police have surveillance video from nearby businesses to help with the investigation. the chief who attended the funeral service for sergeant lunger is relieved his injured officers are okay. >> right now, we're just happy

that we don't have another lengthy hospital stay or funeral to attend. >> in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> this young man, 15-year-old adrian jerry gonzalez made his first court appearance in santa cruz today. he is facing charges as adult for kidnap, rape and murder of his neighbor. prosecutors claimed that gonzalez lured little maddie into his family's apartment on sunday. >> i have not received any police reports yet. i know the police are busy as are prosecutors. i expect to receive information on the case. maybe tomorrow, probably next week. >> we are in a position to go forward at a moment's notice on this case. and we're confident in the jurors of sand santa cruz. >> gonzalez is being held in a juvenile correction center. he is due back in court in september. >> burning about 40 acres of

open space at a cattle ranch on natalie drive. the fire is contained. no one was hurt. no structures burned. the fire created so much smoke that at one point people at walnut creek and lafayette were asked to stay inside and close their windows. >> the rocky fire burning for more than 24 hours. this is a look at conditions on the ground where firefighters are working on containment today. three structures have been destroyed. several outbuildings have been damaged. the fire is up to 8300 acres and there are mandatory evacuations for people who live in the area. >> let's check on our wind conditions outside right now. >> yeah. spencer christian is here with our accu weather update. hi, spencer. >> let's look right now at a live doppler 7 hd. sunny skies mainly across the bay area. warm but not nearly as hot as yesterday. let me take you to the area of that fire in lake county. it is sizzling 102 degrees in the area right now. dangerously low, relative humidity. 12%. can you see how dry it is. winds there are not very strong

but occasionally gusting up to 13 miles per hour so that does hamper the fire fighting effort. meanwhile only 87 degrees right now so it is warm but not hot. relative humidity there is much higher than lake county. 31% and winds are not a factor there at the moment. winds are very light about 1 mile per hour. 24-hour temperature change is significant. no triple digits showing up right now with 10 degrees cooler at fairfield right now, there was at this hour yesterday. 9 degrees cooler in concorde. and even around the bay, most locations, and this blue sky looking west ward from emeryvil emeryville. 93 in morgan mill, pretty warm. we see clouds near golden gate but nothing widespread. 84 in santa rosa. 90s in fairfield but once again a far cry from yesterday's 106 and 108. a look at the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, spencer.

a rise in use. we will see how the bay area did last month with conservation. the drought is leading to new users a at central valley lake. watch out for leachers. the lake is about 90 minutes west of the national park. our sister station kfsn talked with one bay area woman who found her family covered with leaches. >> nancy and her family came to lake yosemite to cool down on a very hot day. but left the water with little brown leaches stuck to their legs. >> small and creepy. >> another woman sent us these photos of the tiny blood-sucking worms that latched on to her skin during swim. m merces posted warnings about sightings leaches in lakes, rivers and ponds across the

state. >> they are naugtive to califora and the waters and streams. certainly with the drought and warmer waters, i think it maybe it is not surprising. >> the merced irrigation disstrict usually fills this man made reservoir in the spring by releasing water from make mcclure. but that wasn't done this year so there is less space for the leaches to spread out. >> with the drought, we just don't have the water to fill the lakes that would normally be there in time of year. >> the count aye decided not to sell boating passes this summer and attendance is down nearly 20% from the same time last year. but andy said he and his grandsons still love spending time here. >> it is a hot day and a little cooler here. so it is a nice place to be. >> experts say the leaches do not transmit diseases and are are relatively harmless. but they can cause small wounds. officials say the best way to remove a leach is to scrape it

i'm sure spencer christian would remember back in the day, niners were red and gold. a great quarterback. unfortunately the niner teams weren't very good back then. >> that's right. otherwise he would have been in the hall of fame before now. he had the skills and leadership qualities. 7 hd, leading you into the hot weather forecast. mostly sunny skies around the bay area but clouds are on the way. the ones coming our way are down south producing thunderstorms and showers from santa barbara county and bakersfield south ward all the way down to the san diego area. so let's look at current temperatures right now in the bay area under mostly sunny skies. quite a bit less intense in our inland areas. 97 ant antioch and livermoore. most other inland locations are in the 80s up to about 90 at concorde and san ramon. 74 in oakland.

towers showing low clouds and fog pushing out over san francisco and the bay from the coast and this is bringing a bit of a cooling effect no doubt. these are our forecast features, partly clud aye as high clouds move in as well. further cooling into the weekend and milder and muggy by bay area standards over the next couple of days and here is what is happening in the atmosphere. that big hot air mass is sliding east ward now and getting an onshore flow, cooling onshore flow i might add. we have clouds and moisture around the south. our forecast 7:00 this evening at which that flow will be mainly to our east out over the sierra. but during overnight hours we will see high clouds pushing through the bay area. we will feel an increase in humidity. so a little bit muggy tomorrow and perhaps into saturday as well. and that moisture will feed the possibility of sierra thunderstorms. rather unusual currents tomorrow. back to the bay area tonight. partly cloudy. low clouds and high clouds. mild with the low temperatures mainly in upper 50s to low 60s.

. now at 4:30, the emotional memorial service for sergeant scott lunger whose end of watch was july 22nd. among speakers were his father and two college-age daughters who gave touching tributes. several other family members, pierce and colleagues paid respects and talked about what sergeant lunger talked to them. the speeches by his daughter were incredibly moving. i think we can agree with katie's assessment that they are brave women. this photo here is of east bay residents showing their support for the sergeant along the precession route. melanie will have more on how the community is reacting at 5:00. sergeant lunger was a 15-year veteran of the hayward

shell oil ice breaker retreated after a showdown with environmental activists were dangling from portland's tallest bridge. more than a dozen green peace members were upheld from st. john's bridge forming a human barricade to block the ship from head together arctic. the activists were warned they were breaking the law but took no action. >> all right. time to check on our weather.

u.s. senate banned the rental of recall cars that have not been fixed. the bill is named for rachel and jacqueline holk of southern california. they died in the fiery crash of a rented pt cruiser back in 2004. now you may remember my reports showed enterprise rented the car even though it will been recalled for a steering problem. the family was shocked to find out there is nothing to stop rentals of defective cars. today's bill would change all that making it illegal to rent out recalled cars before they are repaired. the bill now goes to the house of representative. i will of course keep track of what happens. ford took a bold step putting aluminum siding, i should say this year, putting aluminum siding instead of steel on its trucks. crash test shows mixed results. highway safety provided th this crash test video showing the super model did well earning a top safety rating.
