>> fire emergency in california. the state's largest fire is chasing i'm from interior homes tonight. we want get to right to our developing news on the lake county wildfire. the rocky fire is burning 45 miles north of santa rosa, growing to 35 square miles five percent contained. flames destroyed three structures and the fire is threatening hundreds of homes tonight. emergency officials have issued another round of evacuation orders.

cornell bernard is live in lake county. >> reporter: it's a really nervous time for everyone, and the fire has moved north. you can see the smoke behind me. new evacuation orders have been issued for the golden eagle housing development. and all areas east of the cash creek recreationaway along highway 20. that's several miles from where we are now where the fire has scorched everything in sight. >> just keeping a eye and see when we can get back in there and give is the okay. >> he is waiting to go home his family has been living in this rv in the parking lot of david's feed store. hay bales are covered, protected from falling emberes. self dogs and eight, and a miniature horse are here, too. firefighters told the family to leave their home as the rocky fire grew more intense. luckily his house survived. >> been a scary time for you guys. >> absolutely. >> just don't know -- how the

winds change. >> reporter: more than 1500 firefighters from across the west are battling the fire across unforgiving, steep, rugged hillsides. as the fire marches north the weather is helping. >> we don't have those high winds out of the north. humidities are starting to come up and temperatures coming down. >> reporter: the death of firefighter david ruhl is a grim reminder how dangerous the job can be. >> unfortunately there's tragic occurrences that do occur around the country, and we constantly push safety. safety all the time. >> reporter: the red cross evacuation shelter at middle town high school is open with room for more. >> we're expecting a possibility of more if the evacuations in clear lake become mandatory. so we have ramped up the shelter to accommodate 100 people. >> reporter: locals and evacuees sending a very big thank you to firefighters for all they've

done, but to keep in mine, 6100 structures remain threatened by the fire. evacuees are hoping the weather does cooperate and firefighters can finally get the upper hand on this blaze. we're live in lake county, abc7 news. >> thank you. and more now on the fire -- firefighterrer who died. officials say david ruhl was killed while exploring ways to attack the fire when erattic winds stoked the flames and he became trapped. he was from south dakota and has been assigned in california. ruhl was helping battling a wildfire in the modoc national forest. around the state, 21 large fires most of them in northern california, are pushing 7,000 firefighters to their him as they battle flames amid drought. firefighters are reporting good progress on this fire, burning in napa and solano counties near lake berryessa. it charged 126 scare miles since

started july 22nd. it's 29% contained. another fire ignitedded yesterday in trinity county west of redding. this fire is five percent constrained has forced evacuations. crews are keeping a close eye on the forecast because of the familiar for lightning in the area today. we want to stick with weather now. cooler on the fire linessed today compared to yesterday but firefighters still facing weather challenges. drew tuma has the latest on the conditions. >> and we saw that active southwest wind pushing the lake county fire to the north. so the temperature right now is a very warm 95 degrees. relative humidity is low at 22%. the winds right now out of the south southwest at eight miles-per-hour and dusting to 15. future weather takes you through lake county over the next 12 hours or so. tomorrow morning, good news. by 6:00, the winds are going to

calm down. but in the late afternoon hours and early evening, the winds are going to pick up between 10 and 15 miles-per-hour out of the southwest. unfortunately, that onshore breeze is giving us relative cool temperatures in the 70s and 80s and this cooling trend continue ford the second half of the weekend. we'll talk about sunday with the full accuweather seven-day forecast in just a few. >> a major bart shutdown in effect while crews work on track maintenance. there's no transbay tube service this way but bart ranked to keep things moving. sergio is live. >> reporter: to make sure that passengers are able to navigate their way from the market street train here to the transbay terminal they have dispatched a small army of people in fluorescent vests which you can't see through the big group of people are walking to the

temporary trapsbay terminal. some of the works have been here since this morning to help direct passengers to the dropoff and loading opinions for the shuttle buses. they connect bart train requireds who get to embarcadero station and then walk here to the temporary trapsbay terminal to continue on to trains through downtown oakland. bart has marshaled nearly 100 buses from bay area transit areas to provide the free service. passengers from oakland told us the bus ride was not crowded actually fast, 20 to 25 minutes and bart says a drop in erodership has helped. >> typically on a saturday we see 100,000 people using bart to get across the bay. so far the ridership numbers show that's down by 50%. which is great. we wanted to get the message out remembering if you don't have to travel across the bay please don't do so. >> reporter: crews have been hard at work replacing a series of aging transfer rails near the

west oakland bart station and that is why train service under the bay had to be stopped this weekend, according to bart, the crews are making great progress and these bus bridges are going to be in operation for regular service tomorrow and then compare together to break, as usual, over a sunday night, and then continue on monday. reporting live in san francisco, abc7 news. >> okay, thank you. bart is providing a lot of information about how to get around without transbay service and we have that information on our web site, abc7news.com. new details about an exchange of gunfire between san jose employs and a suspect. police say around 11:30 last night the man took off running as officers approached a group of people at the light rail station. they say the suspects opened fire and officers shot back. he is accused of then carjacking a vehicle and trying to run over an officer. that officer shot at the man but

missed. the pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into another car. two people in that car were taken to the hospital. they're expected to recover. the suspect suffered minor injuries. no one was hit by gunfire. also in san jose, flames reduced a large home to rubble in the vista point area and in the fight a firefighter suffered a minor burn to his ear. the fire started just after 3:00 this morning. fire dispatch tells abc7 news the roughly 7,000 square foot home was still under construction. no word yet on what sparked the fire. ahead, why a construction of a giant telescope in hawai'i is leading to arrests. >> what researchers are saying after word that the brother of the famous lion, cecil, had also been shot and killed. >> the dream toes play football. i said don't give up on your dream. >> a dream come true for a rising football star. 140 characters got him on the team.
