>> live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good morning, everyone. it's sunday, august 2nd. i'm chris nguyen, in for carolyn tyler. let's start with meteorologist lisa argen, who is tracking the weather >> good morning. we are beginning to see some clearing at livermore and san ramon. the rain, we may see more of it today. maybe a thunderstorm in the sierra nevada, and quincy look at lightning strikes. and a live look outside from mt. tam. the marine layer over 2,000 feet deep. and underneath the clouds we are mild with 66 in mountain view, 65 in san jose. 62 in half moon bay. so the low clouds and fog will erode to the shoreline. partial afternoon sun at the coast and temperatures remaining on the mild side. a very typical summer-like

pattern. we will fill in the details in just a few minutes. chris >> lisa, thank you. we have new numbers to share this morning on the massive wildfire burning in lake county. the rocky fire is the largest of the 21 major fires burning in northern california. it's now burned 46,000 acres. last night it was at 27,000. the fire is still just 5% could be taped. flames are highway 20 and west of highway 16. we have the latest. >> the rocky fire can best are summed up as unpredictable. >> one day it was blowing to the west, another day blowing to the east. it's been a tough fight. >> as the fire makes its way toward a main thoroughfare in lake county, officials are stepping up an advisory for a mandatory evacuation for a dozen homes.

also highway 20 to highway 16 to high bay 53 is closed. missy clark, who drove here to help her friend pack up to get out, finds herself stuck. >> you can see the fire just at the crest of the hill. i tried to get back out in time and the fire was too quick. >> weather temperatures have not helped. >> even with cooler temperatures and higher humidity, we have active, fire extreme fire behavior. >> firefighters are surprised by just how hard the fire is pushing. they say they are prepared. >> as needs arise, more resources come in, they get move around the incident. 1500 firefighters are here from all over the state. there's a strong aerial fight, a well. firefighters are pretreating the ridge line with retardant so if the fire bumps into it, it won't go anywhere. it's a beautiful country. it's nice out here. but at the same time, it's dangerous. >> firefighters left documenting the fire's path, trying to anticipate where it will move next. in lake county, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> some encouraging news about the wragg fire burning.

matt spencer came into the city from oakland and managed to make it into san francisco before friends. >> you said you actually had friends who were carpooling? >> yeah, and they will be stuck on the bridge for a while. >> bart dispatched a small army of street guides to direct passengers from trains that stopped in downtown san francisco to the temporary transbay terminal and they were you also in oakland to make sure passengers got on the right bus. >> i asked are you going to san francisco? and they said yes, so i said get on the bus. >> marcus forgot the trains weren't running through the transbay tube today, so instead he got a free bus ride. >> it was cool. something different. instead of driving i got to look off into the water. >> this is video provided by bart of the work being done this weekend. crews are replacing aging transitions rails. in order to ease as much congestion as possible, they have interesting advice to transbay commuters this weekend. >> so far the ridership is down by 50%.

that is great because we want to get the message out if you don't have to travel across the bay, then please don't do so. >> regular transbay tube service will resume monday morning. another shutdown to complete the work will happen labor day weekend. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> bart has a fleet of 94 buses available for commuters. they say the buses are running about once every minute. to move things along the buses will have priority through the bay bridge toll plaza. >> stepped ferry service continues today. the alameda-oakland ferry had a 25% jump in ridership yesterday morning because of the transbay tube closer. for help navigating around traffic problems, get waze on your smartphone. be sure to download it from apple's app store or google play and join the waze group for free. time now 9:06. >> an amtrak hit and killed a woman in oakland last night.

now investigators want to know why she was open the tracks. it was happened before 6:30 near industrial parkway. firefighters tried to revive the woman, but she died at the scene. witnesses say she was pushing a baby carriage, but only had her belongings inside of it. they think she didn't hear the train coming. in emeryville two people were hurt when a car crashed into the side of the building. it happened around 5:15 p.m. yesterday. it was at 40th and horton. police say this car crashed into another car before hitting the building. we are told everyone involved is expected to be okay. a search is on far a parolee suspected of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. concord police are looking for this man, 52-year-old james bolden, a registered sex offender. he's 6 feet tall. 170 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. he has recently been seen driving this gold 1991 honda accord, california license plate number 6cgg337. hundreds of people gathered in modesto yesterday to remember amanda cruz and her two daughters, 6-year-old elizabeth

ripley and 6-month-old rachel martinez who was murdered two weeks ago in their home. the baby's father has been arrested, 34-year-old man, suspected of killing them, their mother and another five-year-old girl. he's also charged with the death of cruz's two-year-old son christopher, who died from head injuries last september. >> i want to represent her. i want him to see my face. and i want him to see her face with my face. >> cruz and her daughters were laid to rest friday during a private service. 9:08 is our time. happening today, san mateo county mosquito and veteran control workers will begin spraying in menlo park to control the spread of the west nile virus. mosquitoes carrying the virus were found last week in the area between menlo avenue, creek drive, san mateo drive and waverly street. the spraying begins tonight at 9:00 and runs through monday morning at 5:00, weather permitting.

an historic el nino system could bring a lot of rain to the state, but california officials believe it could be too much. they are now getting ready for worst-case scenarios. emergency officials say california faces many challenges due to its elevation range variety of topography and climate. wildfires bring an added complication because they bring debris from mudslides in heavy rain. national weather experts won't know until early fall if this year's el nino will be strong enough to bring intense rainstorms. >> in higher elevations you are certainly looking at snow and slurries happening. you will have a different type of debris flow, and possibly land collapses because the ground isn't used to the weight of the snow. >> state emergency officials say they have already begun the process of talking with local and state agencies so they are all on the same page in terms of procedures. they say the faster their response times to events like floods, the more they can contain them.

>> covering fremont, palo alto north bay and all the bay area this is abc7 news. >> great to have you with us on this sunday morning. time right now is 9:13. a live look outside at our san jose camera. just how warm will it get? lisa returns in a little bit with the full accuweather forecast. a man said he shot and killed a bear in self-defense. it happened in auburn, northeast of sacramento yesterday morning. the man said the bear killed at least six of his chickens and was at his doorstep, ready to attack him and his dog. >> a lot of chickens around here, a lot of chicken coops and i don't know if they are just looking for food? >> the man said he called authorities, but claimed they didn't get there in time.

neighbors described the man as an animal lover and said he would not have shot the bear unless he was in fear for his life. >> this morning zimbabwe officials say a second american killed a lion in an illegal hunt several months ago. meanwhile, the fate of another high i don't know is in question, believed to be the brother of the one killed by the american dentist. philip has the latest. >> this morning zimbabwe cracking down on hunting, restricting the act in the wake of the illegal killing of cecil, the lion. they released this statement. hunting of lions, elephants outside of the parks has been suspended with immediate effect. dr. walter palmer shot and killed the beloved lion, cecil. overnight rumors swirling of another devastating poaching. this time cecil's brother lion, jaric co. but park officials releasing this photo of jericho alive and

holder made from a baby rye months russ foot. the items were smuggled into the u.s. to be sold overseas, where people believe they have special powers. in iran ground up rhino horns are given because they believed to cure hangovers. >> not only of their status symbol but their wealth and their ability to provide it to their guests. the u.s. department of justice said this type of illegal trade is driven mostly by asian buyers, willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. new this morning, a man who posted this video of himself jumping a fence at the columbus, ohio zoo to pet wild cougars will soon be camed himself. he was fined more than $300 for his stunt and will be confined to jail. he said he was an idiot for jumping the fence, but the nearness of the cougars was an opportunity of the lifetime. he also added that he hopes it will not get him

fired from his job as a bartender. kraft is recalling cases of single-sliced cheese slices. the concern is that some of the wrapping may stay on the cheese after the wrapper is removed. it has a used date by december 29th through january 4th. in new york city a fourth person has died from legionnaires' outbreak. it started in the bronx on friday at the opera house hotel. since then the bacteria has been found also at a hospital. the bacteria is inhaled and can grow larger in air conditioner units or plumbing, but it cannot be spread person to person. >> more than 250 students will be prepared to the first day of school thanks to yesterday's stuff-the-bus school supply giveaway in antioch. a teenager created the program to help fellow students stay focused in school with pens and papers. the oakland schoolchild has raised more than $10,000 through

community donations. motorcycle officers from the bay area and across the country got revved up on the embarcadero yesterday for the third annual san francisco international police motorcycle competition and exhibition. abc7 news was at pier 30 where participants performed u-turns circles and rapid acceleration all for bragging rights and safety training while on the job. >> doing a presidential escort or doing special events like the giants winning the world series where we have to do this on real surface streets. it's better to have a practice or dress rehearsal out here versus learning the hard way and making errors out on the street. the event also offered a bicycle obstacle course for the kids. >> happening now, nearly 1500 cyclists will take to the streets for the 24th edition of the tour de peninsula in san mateo. it's considered one of the bay areas longest-running fun bicycle rides.

it started, and finishes at eucalyptus picnic area at coyote point recreation area. there are three route options based on experience level. the ride started bat 2 hours ago at 7:00 a.m. time now is 9:19. weather-wise we are off to a mild start across the bay area. we are, all in the 60s. several of us will be waiting on the sun for the next several hours. the next hour or so the east bay should clear. but more low clouds and fog this morning due to a healthier marine push, over 2,000 feet. above that the winds are pretty gusty and we are still looking at moisture from the sierra nevada to the northern sacramento valley where between last night and this morning, over hundred lightning strikes. so still very active on the periphery of an area of high pressure bringing in that subtropical moisture. around lower lake right now 73 degrees. relative humidity 57%. by about 3:00 4:00 in the afternoon, that should drop to 20%. the winds right now of light. they are expected to increase.

once again be quite erratic anywhere from 15 to 17 miles an hour. so temperatures yesterday were in the mid-90s. today forecasting a high of near 90 degrees. so slightly cooler and cooler still tomorrow into tuesday. so here's a look at that wind profile throughout the rest of the day. you will notice that the wind is certainly not cooperating. it could be a lot worse but still hard to get a hand on that fire. so here's a look at mt. tam. the low clouds the fog. cloudy in the north bay and elsewhere with 62 in san francisco. 64 in oakland, 65 for you in san jose. little change for the south bay. subtle changes here and there with the timing of the sunshine, as that marine layer continues to peel back. so you will notice at 11:00 the east bay sunny parts of the bay. and still the peninsula in the north bay are cloudy. but we could get just a little bit of sun at the coast today. but tomorrow it looks like the fog really mixes out and we will get more average sun with a

cooler day for your monday afternoon. right now looking at numbers all across the bay area in the 60s. gusty winds by the delta at 7. and live more, we are seeing brighter condition out there. emeryville cloudy for you. cloudy and mild with a typical summer spread today. then more cooling tomorrow. the coolest day of the week should be tuesday as the trough lifts on out of the bay area. then we will be looking at warmer conditions. just gradual warming come wednesday and thursday. look at all the low clouds, all the way out to our east bay. but as i widen it you notice the mid-level clouds where we have the moisture and the rain and the lightning from the northern sacramento valley into the sierra nevada. and then low clouds and fog all the way down into southern california. 87 is the forecasted high today in livermore. there's your cool-downs for monday and tuesday. slightly warmer but not too hot. it cools back down by next friday and saturday. so look for about 80 today. once again san jose, 78

>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. did good morning everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. we are starting this hatch hour with a look at the weather forecast with meet lisa argen. hi lisa. >> hi, chris. we see the gray skies here over lake tahoe where the threat of thunderstorms continues. back home temperatures mild in the upper 60s with very breezy conditions by the delta. livermore trying to break out into some sun at 67. 63 in santa rosa. we are looking at a cooler start for most of you. anywhere from three to four degrees cooler from concord, san carlos and hayward. with he will look for the temperatures to trend gradually downward today. the low 70s in san francisco. low 70s to mid-68 #* -- mid-80s around the bay. typical summertime weather and we will talk about the customers below average in the next couple of days. that's all coming up.

chris. >> thanks, lisa. new details this morning on the search for missing malaysian airline flight 307. officials say a second piece of plane debris that washed ashore belongs to a domestic ladder and is not a plane part. the piece was found on reunion island. that was where the first piece was found last week. the piece helped the plane turn and slow down for landing. it's barely damaged, supporting the u.s. belief someone deliberately took the plane off course. if you wanted minimize the amount of floating debris the best way to do that would likely be ditch the airplane, land it on the water intact, open the doors, let it fill up, and sink. >> flight 370 went down last what without a trace with 239 people on board. the flapper arm is in france and analysis will begin to wednesday. >> knew this morning, president obama will impose keeper cuts on

emissions from power plants than recently expected. that's the word from officials at the white house. president obama calls it the most significant step the u.s. was ever taken to fight global warming. last year the president mandated a 30% cut in carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2030. it will require a 32% cut and it will be announced tomorrow at a white house event. >> now news that could shake up the presidential nomination. advice preds joe biden may jump into the ring to fulfill his son's dying wish. >> this morning joe biden isn't saying yes, but he isn't saying no to a possible run at the white house. his political machine is gearing up. >> hi, how are you? >> abc news has learn the vice president's chief of staff is quietly talking to biden supporters and democratic supporters, clearing the way for a possible presidential

month. this morning some good news for firefighters battling the willow fire. officials believe the worst of this fire is likely behind them. crews containing 50% of the blaze that has ripped through more than 5,000 acres. >> and that was cana whitworth reporting. the largest fire is the rocky fire. it continues to grow and firefighters are not making progress. it has burned 36,000 acres and is just not contained. highway 16 is closed from highway 20 to the yellow county line in both directions because of the fire. new this morning, a nine-year-old kansas batboy is in critical condition after being hit in the head with a bat. kyle went to retrieve a bat during an amateur game in wichita yesterday. he ran by a batter taking practice swings in the on-deck

>> welcome back. an i-phone helped catch a suspected burglar in utah. the security camera was connected to his i-phone. when he came home he noticed lights on so he checked his app and saw the burglar going through his mail. he called the police. police said she was in the house for an hour and was armed with a knife. a woman who was blind for 16 years now has the ability to see again. she had a condition that caused her vision to decline at the age of 18. at 45 she couldn't see herself in the mirror anymore. she was given special glasses with a tiny camera that appear first images. the signal is september back to the glasses and the image is transmitted to the implants.
