a critical moment today in the battle against a rapidly growing fire that doubled in size overnight. here's the epicenter in the fight against the flames. hello, i'm katie marzullo. we begin with developing news on the rocky fire. sky 7hd bringses this live look at the fire burning in lower lake north of santa rosa. shifting winds are blamed nor rapid advance of flames. the fire has scorched more than 73 square miles, nearly the size of the city of oakland. the fire is five percent contained. flames destroyed 24 homes and

tonight 6300 homes are in harm's way. cornell bernard is live in lower lake. a lot of worried people out there tonight. >> reporter: folks are so worried tonight. many are trying to remain calm, but take a look at this. scenes like this are certainly not helping with that at all. this is just incredible. he rocky fire has crossed this ridge in the last ten minutes, moving to the northwest, and an intense air assault is underway. with tankers dropping water and fire retardant on this fast-moving blaze. far from here the fire continues to march north with a vengeance. 2,000 firefighters from across the state trying to prevent this intense blaze from jumping highway 20. so far that battleline has not been crossed. backfires have been set to prevent the spread. hundreds of worried results

needed more information and went to a community meeting at lower lake high school to get updates from calfire on this blaze. so far there is no word when evacuate residents can return home, and others are wondering tonight when they may have to pack up and go. >> i haven't slept for two days. and now i'm concerned about spring valley because my nephew lives out there. >> how are you feeling? >> well, we're just getting tired of this. >> yesterday the runs that the fire made were significant and the energy components that the fire released was probably, i would say historic. >> reporter: historic indeed. firefighters say lower temperatures higher humidity, helping a bit, but the wind has kicked up in the last hour. something that firefighters to not want to see. and what you're looking at right now is certainly testament to that. let's go back live to sky 7hd

with this incredible vantage point as the fire continues to burn to the northwest tonight. across three counties we are told. lake county, co lose a county and yuba county. firefighters say this fire, as you heard from the calfire spokesman is historic, they say firefighters who have been on the front lines sense then 1980s have ever seen a fire this intense. full containment on this fire, not expected until august 10th live in lake county tonight abc7 news. >> scary stuff. the rocky fire is the largest of 21 major fires burning in california. you can see them here on this map, burning up and down the state. at least six of the fires north of sacramento were sparked by lightning. the teenager is accused of starting this wildfire in a central valley. the fire is burning in the

in ridership yesterday morning because of the transbay toupe closure. i if you ride san francisco's muni metro in the late evening hours, shuttle buses will take you between the embarcadero station and st. francis circle from now until january. the buses will run between 9:30 in the evening and 1:30 in the morning. the buses will connect with lightrail vehicles running on surface streets. muni is upgrading communications equipment in the subway. now to a developing story from memphis tennessee. police have taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the deadly shooting of a police officer. officer sean bolton died after being shot several times during a traffic stop late last night. investigators believe that a passenger from that car opened fire on bolton. police suspect the person was in possession of marijuana. >> looking at coward. he's a coward.

you gun down, you murder a police officer. for less than two grams of marijuana. you have literally destroyed a family. >> the head of the memphis police praised a good samaritan who used officer bolton's radio to call for help. a nine-year-old kansas bat boy is in critical condition after being hit in the head with a bat. witnesses say kaiser carlisle went to retrieve a bat during an amateur baseball league game in wichita, yesterday. he rantweight by a batter taking practices swings and was hit in a head. carlisle was wearing a helmet. breaking news. hazmat staff are responding to a fire at the phillips refinery in rodeo. most people should not be affected. the fire is now out but the air quality is still being tested.

they're just like elephants. >> this is the third dead whale to wash ashore in pacifica since mid-april. scientist have not determined what killed the whales or another one that washed up in half moon bay. tonight, san mateo county mosquito workers will begin spraying to control the spread of the west nile virus. mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in the area between menlo avenue, creek drive, san mateo driver, and waiverly street. many bay area residents face rising rents, and tomorrow richmond city council will take another look at imposing rent control to help out tenants. the council has already approved a major to enact rent control and eviction protection. the law requires the propose sal to be read twice before the it comes a law. richmond would be the first bay area city to enact rent control
