th this is abc7 news. >> there is so much energy and heat in the main body of the fire. >> the rocky fire is burning hot and intense tonight forcing more evacuations. good evening, everyone. the rocky fire in lake county continues to grow. it has burned nearly 85 square miles and has become the largest fire ever in lake county. and it has spread to yolo and coluuso counties. 3,000 firefighters are battling the fire and it is only 5% contained. sergio is live with the latest. sergio? >> katie, tonight we found a hill so we could watch the fire line in the distance. it is something we notice a lot of the residents near clear lake doing.

a lot of people are evacuated and they say they have things packed just in case they have to leave. at sunset crews started backfires to cut a fire line along this ridge which is only a couple miles away from the town of clear lake. >> we are afraid it will jump that ridge and come down. >> it is really close. >> it is and out back it is nothing but grass. >> gail and lots of friends cleared out equipment from their business. it is close to one of the evacuation areas. >> we are getting our tools out of the shop as fast as we can. >> david middleton is moving out. he moved his tools to his home in clear lake just in case. at the intersection of state roads 53 and 20chp officers closed down traffic preventing anyone from going back in. that's where emma and her son live. >> it is a mandatory evacuation in spring valley which is east of here. they are not letting us in at this point.

we are stuck down here. >> it is big and heading toward my house. >> they don't have anything with them. she has been on the phone with her husband who is still at home. she is trying to convince him to pack up and leave. >> he is out there right now. he is thinking he wul fight the fire -- he will fight the fire. but they haven't been able to stop it. it is pretty hopeless. >> you can see some of the rural buildings destroyed. fire crews are throwing just about everything they've got at this blaze including jumbo jet bombers and more than 2700 firefighters m. >> last night the fire made significant runs and it almost doubled in size overnight. >> the rocky fire spread through three counties over more than 54,000 acres. crews are trying to keep it from doubling again. >> abc7 news. >> so far 24 homes and 26 out buildings have been destroyed in the rocky fire. more than 6,000 other structures are still threatened. looking at this map it shows the mandatory evacuations

under way for spring valley. and we have new video from the california national guard showing a new perspective on the rocky fire. watch as a guard helicopter picks up lake water and drops it around the intense flames. these along with the thousands of gallons of retardant dropped by air tankers helps with the efforts on the front lines. >> the firefighters on the ground can get in there and get the fire out. >> the c-130 airplane can make 15 drops a day. two more are coming from colorado to join the fight. strike teams are at the rocky fire. this photo from vallejo firefighters was posted on twitter today. it shows how big the fire is. there are 21 major fires. you can see them on this map. the majority are in northern california. >> fire officials hope to have full containment of the rag

fire sometime tomorrow. the fire which began on july 22nd has burned more than 8,000 acres. it is now 95% contained. let's head to meteorologist drew touma for a look at what firefighters are facing. >> the rocky fire has gotten so massive that now the smoke ago seen from space. this is satellite imagery from earlier this evening. you notice this gray area you can see right here to the east of clear lake that's the smoke from the rocky fire earlier this evening. this is when firefighters try and make the greatest advance on fires. the relative humidity goes up and the winds calm down. the temperature is 71 degrees. the all important relative humidity is up to 53%. that's up from 17% earlier this afternoon. the winds are calming down out of the north just gusting to six miles per hour at this time. a closer look at your monday forecast where you live with the full accu-weather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you.

same thing. what is going on? the whale that washed ashore is a 33-foot long humpback. biologists converged to perform a necropsy. they hoped to find a cause of death, and while they spotted a few bites, they still don't know how it died. >> it could be blunt force trauma. it could be old age that is starting to come on shore and malnutrition cases. >> people who live in and around pacifica think something bigger is going on. this is the third dead whale to wash ashore. a sperm whale washed up in april. in those cases there was no official cause of death. >> it makes me really sad. we love the whales. we go whale watching, and we watch them. it is sad what is going on in our environment. i wish they would find out why they are doing this. it would be interesting to know. hopefully they can find a way

to stop it. >> biologists say at this point there is no reason to be alarmed. the whales are likely not a sign of a bigger problem. >> we got recent reports that over the last week or so there have been 100 to 200 humpbacks feeding. there are just more whales in the area and that's more chance of having a dead one. >> they are working on a plan to remove the dead whale. they will likely bury it or tow it out to sea. abc7 news. >> philips 66 is trying to figure out what caused a small fire inlits refinery. the fire started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. hazmat issued a health alert for the community just after the flare up. firefighters had it out by 5:00 and hazmat lifted the health alert. county workers are spraying to get rid of mosquitoes carrying the west nile virus. they found infected mosquitoes between menlo avenue and creek drive and san mateo drive and waverly street. spraying started at 9:00.

crews are using a synthetic chemical that the county says poses little risk. spraying ends tomorrow at 5:00 in the morning. also tomorrow morning bart's trans bay two between oakland and san francisco will be open to passengers dwen. it has been closed all weekend for much needed track work. 9 four free buses took people across the bay and extra ferries were running as well. traffic was no heavier than usual. >> it worked really well. they said an hour to two-hour delay. >> perfect. enough time to take the kids out and let them see the water on the bus. it was fun. i would rather do it on the bus than the bart. >> they will close down over labor day weekend to complete the work. be sure to watch the abc7 news morning team starting tomorrow at 4:30 for the latest on the

closing ceremonies capped the special olympic world games at the los angeles memorial coliseum. crowds cheered the 6500 athletes who competed at the venue the last week. it provides an opportunity for athletes to shine despite physical and intellectual challenges. organizers estimate half a million people witnessed them display their skills. sad news in the games. police are looking for a special olympics bowler. he was separated from his group during a festival at usc last night. he is frommal albania and does not speak english but he does respond to his name. new details in the controversies surrounding the death of cecil the lion. another american could be in trouble accused of taking part in an illegal hunt. abc news reporter philip mena has more. >> reporter: a growing mystery and a new investigation and a sigh of relief as the controversy rages around the death of cecil the lion and

the minnesota dentist who killed him. news a second american is suspected it in the hunt of a lion in april. >> law enforcement officers are looking into the matter so we can understand what transpired. >> the announcement hours after the release of this photo proving cecil's ally is alive and well. reports on saturday indicate a hunter killed the lion who is now taking care of cecil's cubs but he was spotted roaming with pride. zimbabwe is cracking down on hunting. the parks and wildlife authority acknowledging the economic impact asking for donations to replace the massive fees the pro fee -- the trophy hunters pay. money critical to funding conservation efforts. >> there wouldn't be half the lions we have today if not for the hunting community. >> not everyone agrees.

users receive an e-mail that appears to be from microsoft. it asks you to download a file that provides a windows 10 upgrade for free. but if you install the file it puts something called ransom ware on your computer. it takes over your computer until you pay the hacker that made it. security experts urge you to delete the e-mail if you get it. let's check the forecast and let's send it over to meteorologists for news on a cool down. >> august starting out on a comfortable note with temperatures below normal. that trend continues into monday as well. live doppler 7hd is quiet. we mainly cooled off into the 60s at the 11:00 p.m. hour. 64 san mateo and 62 in fremont. san jose 65 and downtown san francisco checking in with a temperature mild at this hour of 62 degrees. you look off the northern california coast and there is a little bit of spin in the atmosphere right there. that's an upper level low. what it is doing is enhancing

our marine layer and it is giving us a cooler on shore wind and bringing us the cooler afternoon temperatures. and that's the same set up headed our way for monday. future weather shows you tomorrow morning if you are up material at 5:00 in the morning, low clouds around the bay and perhaps isolated spots popping up along the coast. by 9:00 úhe clouds pull back and it is shaping up to be delightful. a lot of sunshine and temperatures are continuing the below normal trend for august. we will jump to the pacific and give you an update on hurricane guillermo. it is weakening and still a category one storm. winds are 85 miles per hour and tracking to the west northwest at 10 miles per hour. as you go to future weather mode by wednesday it gets close to the big island of hawaii and to the early afternoon and likely some downpours and rough surf. you notice the storm as a tropical storm parallels the island chain. by thursday it brings heavy rain. along with the rain it will likely bring g'sy winds. by thursday you notice the

giants three games into their 10-game road trip got to look at mike leak. he had a good outing but not much offensive support. he will miss a few innings after this bad boy. leak had a great debut. struck out five. one mistake in the 6th and gave up a homer to josh hamilton. 2-0 rangers. he allowed one hit in the first eight innings. he gave up the second hit of the game. he then pulls the starter after 80 pitches.

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. good evening. in tonight's headlines, bart will be running trains again through the trans bay tube starting at 4:00 tomorrow morning. the vital connection between oakland and san francisco has been closed all weekend for track work. watch the abc7 morning news tomorrow starting at 4:30. for the latest on the reopening of the trans bay tube. biologists trying to find out what caused the death of a whale in pacifica. the 33-foot humpback washed up this morning and it has been drawing a big crowd. it is the third dead whale found since april. happening in menlo park 9 county woulders are spraying to get rid of -- workers are spraying to get rid of the west nile virus. it ends at 5:00 tomorrow morning. growing danger from california's raging wildfires. the worst is burning north of here in lake county. the fast-moving rocky fire has doubled in size in the past 24

hours. more than 12,000 people have had to evacuate the area. two does inhomes are gone -- two dozen homes are gone. fires are burning in nine states tonight. clayton has the latest. >> firefighters are working day and night against the rocky fire raging north of sacramento. 2,000 firefighters are trying to stop it. it is already chewed through 50,000 acres destroying at least 24 homes and threat thig thousands more. threatening thousands more. the military called up two pour firefighting planes from colorado sending them to california where they will join the large dc10 tankers. right there is a dc10. he is going to drop the fire retardant. it can carry 12,000 gallons of fire retardant at once. there it goes. >> the train here is bone dry

and lightning isn't helping. 13,000 lightning strikes are sparking more than 260 new fires. >> we have seen a couple of spot fires and those pretty much escalated and got big and took off on the side of the mountain. >> more than 12,000 people are evacuated from their homes. he is temporarily camping in an rv with pets. >> just keep an eye and see when we can get back in there. >> even as they keep up the fight, the firefighters are mourning one of their own. forest service firefighter 38 years old and lost his life in northern california as he surveyed the fire zone. >> and the crews on the rocky fire in california are hoping they will get a break from the weather in the next couple days. abc news, lake county california. >> officials in malaysia say an object found this weekend on the same island where a piece of boeing 777 was found is not from a plane. it was identified as a lawyered. it was identified as a ladder. it has been verified to be a

piece of boeing 777. for the first time nasa is offering a glimpse of wreckage from the space shuttle's challenger and columbia. the new exhibit at kennedy space center features two pieces of debris, one from each shuttle and it includes personal reminders of the 14 astronauts who were killed. now to a developing story out of tennessee. a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting of a police officer. abc news reporter richard cantu has more. >> a city in mourning after a traffic stop turned deadly. a memphis police officer shot and killed late saturday by a driver he pulled over. that officer sean bolton, a former marine who served in iraq. he was shot multiple times in the southeast part of the city. >> the driver the vehicle later turned himself into police and has since been

released without charge. the passenger of the vehicle who is believed to be the shooter has been identified as 29-year-old tremain will burn. he is still at large and a warrant for first degree murder has been issued for his arrest. bolton called it senseless saying, quote, my brother's life was just beginning only for it to end in a tragedy. there is enough evil in this world and he fought it until the end of his life. the mayor asking for prayers saying bolton's death speaks volumes to the danger of police work. >> this again is evidence of the fact that there are so many guns on our streets in the wrong hands. at any given minute in a 24-hour day they are dealing with folks who have no rules. >> sean bolton was the third member of the memphis police department killed in less than five years. he was just 33 years old. richard can to, abc news, new york. police are investigating after a pair of explosions

just 20 minutes apart at two churches in new mexico. it happened this morning in las-crusas. the churches are a few minutes apart and authorities are trying to figure out if the blasts are related. president obama faces a possible showdown with america's energy producers as he moves to further cut greenhouse gas emissions. president obama believe the regulations will fight climate change caused by carbon dioxide. some states hinted they will not comply. others in stepped to sue immediately. a san francisco non-profit celebrated a major milestone. they were one of 2 -- 200 college graduates. it began as the omega boys club aiming to protect them

th new at 11:00, the u.s. honor flag is flying over hayward tonight in honor of fallen police sergeant scott lungar. it will fly for 15 hours over the hayward police department one hour for each year he served. he was shot and killed during a traffic stop on july 22nd. the flag honors american heros who sacrifice their lives protecting our communities and their country. if you ever bought furniture that requires you to assemble the pieces you know it can be frustrating.

parts. >> ikea told her to keep calling the store to see if the parts came in. they did not. >> we have our deadline with our contractor of when they want to start. i'm like, a little frenzied. >> upper cabinets. we contacted ikea and someone listened. ikea finally sent the missing pieces, telling us the kitchen set is a new product and sales had boomed. a spokesperson said the ikea store in emeryville did make her aware of the stock situation. she was only charged for parts that were available and the remaining pieces were september free -- were sent free of charge. >> i can't even believe the response was night and day. >> now that everything is here the rest is easy. right? >> it seems like i have a lot of stuff we'll see what it
