county. the fire is behind us. the goal is to keep it that way. what you see now is calm compared with what we saw here an hour ago. let's show you part of what you'll be looking at those flames and billowing black smoke from an intentional fire to burn away fuel when the blaze changes direction. this highway -- section of highway 20 is where the firefighters were making a stand to contain it. they want to keep it south of highway 20, west of highway 16 but that fire has spotted in places. wind is part of the problem. the extremely dry fuel is another. here is cal fire spokesman who is not making predictions about that wind and the fuel and what they might do. >> we're starting to see the fire activity pick up. it's hard to speculate. this has been a very dynamic fire for us simply because this area doesn't have any fire history for the most part. >> reporter: when you say no fire history what does that mean mean? >> it has not burned in some of these areas, so the vegetation and the brush very very dense.
4:02 pm
>> reporter: cal fire continues to fight much of this blaze from the air. in addition to tanker planes they have 17 even by the military dumping water into the steep ravines. they're picking up the water and dumping it as fast as possible. as we come back live there's another one of those spot fires on the ridge behind us. this is nothing to be concerned about, at least not right now, but it's amazing how one minute there's a fire. the next minute there's nothing. and then the next something else sparks. yet a little spot behind us we have fire trucks, bulldozers, a large convoy of crews moving up highway 20 in that direction. we're going to follow them. hopefully we'll have more for you tonight at 6:00. live in lake county on highway 20 wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> all right, wayne. thank you for that update. let's take one more look at the fire from sky 7 hd live. you can see all that scorched area, the scorched earth and the

relative humidity is low. only 22%. it's very dry there. winds out of the south steady at 8 miles an hour, gusting to 17 miles an hour. earlier in the day the winds have been shifting direction from time to time and of course that complicates things for firefighters. right now gusts up to 17 miles per hour and just to put the size of the fire in perspective we say 60,000 acres, that equates to about 94 square miles, which is a huge, massive area for fire. if there's any encouraging news the winds will be diminishing. our wind gusts forecast shows winds dropping off sharply during the overnight and early morning hours and even as they increase midday tomorrow they won't make it back up to the levels today. mainly sunny skies as we look westward from emeryville. temperatures in the 70s in most locations, 81 at morgan hill and warmer as we look over the bay and some of our inland locations, 83 in fairfield. i'll have the complete
