vic lee abc 7 news. and word a second special olympian who went missing has been found. he was spotted at los angeles international airport. a search turned up nothing. the man was just located about six miles away. it's not clear how he got there or what he did all day. a turn for the worse in the fight against a raging wildfire. a spot fire from the rocky fire has jumped highway 20 near the town of lower lake. it's just what crews were trying to prevent. nearly 3,000 firefighters are battling the flames including crews from out of state. firefighters say they're worried now that the flames have jumped the highway. >> a whole new wilderness area and a substantial amount that's there due to no roads very very tough access. >> right now firefighters report 12% containment, more than double from yesterday.

here's the view from sky 7 hd. look at all the flames lapping up there trying to fight it from above. since the fire started on wednesday, it's destroyed 2 4 homes and scorched nearly 94 square miles. >> it is so hard to wrap your head around how huge this fire is. but had might help give you some perspective. cal fire puts the size of the rocky fire as it's known at 60,000 acres almost, as we said 94 square miles. now when you add up the area of san mateo, belmont san carlos, redwood city, atherton, just shy of the amount of land that has burned near clear lake. as you can imagine a fire that massive affects a lot of people. and abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live with how some of the evacuees are coping. sergio? >> reporter: we know that a lot of people in the area have been finding high hills that they can watch the progress of this

firefight. back there a mile away is the western section of this fire line. and then a little bit to your right is where the fire continues. that plume over there that's gray is only about 2 miles away from the town of clear lake. that is very close to a lot of people who are getting nervous. massive plumes of smoke tower as residents worry how close the fire is burning. nearly 40 evacuees checked into middletown last night but others continue to camp out at sites throughout the area. >> we can run the air conditioner so the baby is cool. we have a dog with us and my husband and i. >> reporter: geri driver and her foster baby were able to evacuate from their home last week and set up a mobile home camper with free power and water hookup thanks to the association. it's a challenge to be here so long because the animals are used to running around on their

property. >> we packed up our stuff, grabbed our animals and had to go because we saw the flames coming. we were like yeah we're not going to stay here any longer. >> reporter: at the equestrian center the stables have become one of the area's most popular livestock evacuation spots. one of the largest groups are 17 alpacas. >> they came to us wednesday night and we've been housing them since then. their owners have not contacted us. >> reporter: they were brought here along with two goats. the staff hopes to make contact soon with their owners. otherwise they may have to get foster homes for the whole group. now last night there were a number of streets and highway that is were blocked off and some of them remained closed this afternoon including that one right down there. the good news is overnight there have not been any new evacuations that have been called but this afternoon it does look like these flames are

starting to explode. we'll be checking back to see the progress of the firefight s. reporting live in lake county, i'm sergio quintana, abc 7 news. look at all that thick smoke behind sergio. the gusty winds aren't helping the firefighters. a look at the conditions, drew tuma. this is a tough time to make progress. relative humidity dropped to bone-dry levels and the wind increase. to the rocky fire this hour. the temperature 88 degrees. that relative humidity only at 16% and the winds out of the south/southwest gusting to 18 miles per hour. we talked about it earlier. this fire takes up 94 square miles. we're going to give you another perspective. we took the perimeter of the rocky fire in red and overlayed it on top of the city in san francisco and you can see that fire would engulf the city and then some. here is the sheer scope of what firefighters are dealing with this hour. we'll see that trend early tomorrow morning. winds become calm.

that's great for firefighters. unfortunately, the winds will increase and we are tracking a return of the heat moving inland. we'll detail the numbers of the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. dan? >> thanks very much, drew. a firefighter who died in the line of duty last week was honored during a procession. here you see cars going out into smoky mountains toward mt. shasta. he was reported missing while fighting the fire in the national forest. crews discovered his body friday morning. an autopsy is scheduled next week to determine exactly how he died. more than 9,000 firefighters are battling 21 active fires across california. there have been thousands of lightning strikes since last week sparking hundreds of small wildfires. an oklahoma police sergeant is undergoing a second surgery after a man shot him with an assault rifle early this morning. the shooting happened along mlk way and apgar street in north oakland. officers returned fire killing

that suspect. abc 7 news report erer has the story. >> reporter: he is expected to survive. the sexual assault suspect shot by police was pronounced dead at the hospital this morning. >> it's sad to see this. >> reporter: linda jenkins walked by the scene in north oakland. she, too, has been hit by gunfire. >> it's senseless. >> reporter: police markers cover the street along mlk way and apgar streets. two officers exchanged fire around 1:30 in the morning with a man suspected of sexual assault. >> it's likely close to a full magazine if not full. >> reporter: chief whent. >> the officer came out with a rifle and immediately began firing upon the officers that were in front of the house. >> reporter: police say the 48-year-old man wielded this

it's been just over a month since kate steinle was shot and killed allegedly by an immigrant who had been deported several times. the incident hassan at that santa clara revisiting its policy. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live in san jose with an update. david? >> reporter: ama, the potential shift in policy is aim at keeping dangerous people from being released into the community. portions of that community thinks this might rekindle distrust towards law enforcement. a review is under way. they have been asked to review whether the policy should be modified. the shooting death of kate steinle on the san francisco waterfront has raised concerns cities and counties with

policies of noncooperation with homeland security are allowing dangerous felons to go free. the mayor has urged them to reconsider the policy first enacted in 2011. >> as long as we are clearly disarcinadis disding wishing this is something we reserve for violent felons, it's very clear to our residents that they can continue to trust the city and the county. >> reporter: sheriff lori smith says she has always believed in i.c.e. holds. >> i think we ought to place i.c.e. holds, serious and violent felonies. >> reporter: the supervisor sits on the working group. >> we want to make sure people aren't afraid to dial 911 or to be afraid of people in our community and so i think that means it's time for a good thoughtful discussion. >> reporter: lisa marie opposes any change in the existing policy.

deported five times and does not have a legal basis to remain in the united states. >> a reminder this afternoon don't open your door for strangers. a teenaged girl opens the door to a man she thought was delivering a pizza. he wasn't. police say it happened on suzanne drive just before 10:00. briefly grabbed the girl's mother. the father got involved and the entire family ended up driving the men away. >> it could be made illegal to trap bobcats across the state. they are expected to have two options. a statewide or partial ban. the california department of fish and wildlife recommended the partial band. the partial ban. they would be able to hunt in much of northern california but

have to pay more than $1300 to do that. well something to share tonight, an image from the california department of fish and wildlife shows a really rare sight. a wolf right in the center of your screen. the photo captured last month shows what official believe to be a wolf. the last wolf sighting was the famous or-7 in 2011. officials confirm this animal is not or-7 which is in southern oregon. before then not a single wolf had been sighted since 1924. >> wow. well salt is slowly crippling california's almond industry. tonight from our sister station in fresno, we have mover on how almond growers. >> reporter: the signs of distress are obvious in this almond orchard. loss of foliage, burned leaves and a much smaller crop that looks to be drying up.

>> it should be lush green and vibrant. >> reporter: the almond grower likens it to a train wreck in slow motion. >> the tree defoliated early. it lost all of its leaves due to high salinity. >> reporter: groundwater pumping is the norm with so many growers facing zero water allocation. you can actually see the salt rising to the top. there are quality problems. >> the municipalities from stockton on up through sacramento are dumping their water, their sewage water, treated sewage water. >> reporter: he says the salty irrigation water has impacted the size of his almonds. the crop has shrunk by two-thirds and the nuts are much smaller this year. >> about the only thing that

kernel will be good for is something really low valued as almond butter or milk. >> reporter: this problem has been reported around western fresno and merced county all praying for rain. >> without any rainfall to push the salt naturally down through the soil it's just this continued buildup. >> reporter: the trees would have been productive at least six more years. the state created a website designed to take water waste complaints. so far more than 700 tips. more than 300 water agencies have signed up to get the tips. those water districts can take the information from the site and notify those responsible for wasting water.

79 in livermore. future tower cam showing you downtown san francisco in the foreground, basking in sunshine. so, too, is the east bay and the east bay hills. the forecast calls for a partly cloudy day tomorrow also on the mild side. then we're tracking warmer temperatures wednesday into thursday and then mother nature has a few mood swings so we'll cool down once again come friday. thursday this area of low pressure that will continue to move in along the coast. that will bring the cooldown from the heat. no sign of showers we say yet but there is some instability in the atmosphere that we will be watching for an isolated shower to end the workweek. where we are seeing significant showers, the pacific now tropical storm guillermo has weakened 65-mile-an-hour winds. the latest track has guillermo more to the north of hawaii so the island away from the storm. light rain expected wednesday
