avoiding a scuffle with trump. >> the story appeared today quoting an anonymous gop donor who said you called mr. trump, a clown, a buffoon and something else that cannot be repeated on television. >> no, it's not true, but i have said that mr. trump's language is divisive. >> reporter: now, one thing the candidates could all agree on, hillary clinton. they all said they all took aim at the democratic front-runner and they all said that they could beat her in a general election and would do better for the country. reena, t.j. >> yeah, bazi, a lot of talk about trump, but did any of the other candidates do themselves any favors with their performance last night? >> well, analysts are talking a lot about ohio governor john kasich. they say they feel he really pulled out a good performance in the first half of the debate, that he really seemed quite reasonable when compared with donald trump. they also have neurosurgeon ben carson on their list of winners coming out of this debate. they say he really started to shine toward the very end of the debate, that he had a very

strong closing statement and that he has actually been trending on social media. also on that list of winners this morning, getting a good response from analysts is florida senator marco rubio. analysts are saying that he managed to hold his own, that he was poised, he had good answers and that he seemed very presidential. >> all right. so there were some other people up there besides trump after all. bazi kanani for us live in washington. thank you so much. and there was also a debate before the debate. you know the candidates who did not make it to that main stage for the main event. well, they had their own forum. >> former senator rick santorum, louisiana governor bobby jindal, former new york governor george pataki and former virginia governor jim gilmore, as well as former ceo carly fiorina shared the stage. >> we need to be very well aware of the fact that china and russia are using technology to attack us just as isis is using technology to recruit those who would murder american citizens. >> to start with, unlike president obama, i'll actually

name the enemy that we confront. we've got a president -- >> analysts say fiorina far and away the winner. one even predicted that next time she'll be on the debate stage with the top candidates. lots of reaction overnight on social media. the most searched for candidates online, donald trump and ben carson. >> and, of course, people were tweeting like crazy including former house speaker newt gingrich saying they should invite carly fiorina back for the 9:00 debate. >> funny man kevin nealon 46 tweeting, "this is turning into jerry springer." >> i thought that at times too. there was this alice stewart, communications assistant. she took this picture. how many republicans can you cram into one elevator? you can stay with us at abc news for the latest on the debate. later in "the pulse," rosie o'donnell, well, her reaction after trump's comment plus live team coverage on "good morning america." well, this morning, a blow to president obama's efforts on the nuclear deal with iran. influential new york senator

chuck shuman says he won't vote in favor. schumer becomes the most senior democrat to go against the administration on the deal. schumer says in the short term we might be slightly better off with the deal but he's not convinced for the long term. russian hackers are thought to be behind a cyberattack on the joint chiefs of staff, the hack affected about 2500 people at the pentagon's joint chiefs including war planners, decision makers, as well. pentagon officials say it was sophisticated yet simple. it was a phishing attack, meaning the hackers dummied up either an e-mail or a login that looked so real that a member of the staff was fooled. well taiwan is bracing for what's expected to be a direct hit from a powerful typhoon over the next day. the storm will bring damaging wind flooding rain and powerful surf to the island before moving toward china. the obama administration is already sending federal aid to the hard-hit island of saipan. it's a u.s. commonwealth declared a disaster area. there's no power or running water there since the storm hit sunday. fire crews in northern california are hampered by newly issued red flag warnings. that means they can expect increasing wind and lightning

which could spark new fires. governor jerry brown visited the crews on the front lines. he warned this is only the beginning for the drought ravaged state noting that historically august and september are much worse than july during fire season. and across the country it's going to be very stormy in the mid-atlantic today. the rain will be especially heavy in the carolinas where more than 3 inches could accumulate and flash flooding is likely. that stormy weather will also reach florida along the gulf coast, as well. well, still ahead, lawmakers going after airlines accusing them of nickel and diming passengers. also, air rage. a passenger punching another person on the plane, what caused this melee. plus, signing off. jon stewart's emotional good-bye from "the daily show."

well, search teams from france are heading to the tiny island where that wing flap was found after more debris has washed ashore. malaysian officials say items like this, which could be part of a plane window, will be tested to see if it came from flight 370, but relatives of passengers from that missing jet are frustrated that they're not getting straight answers from investigators. turn to nashville where new details are emerging about the terror that unfolded this week inside a movie theater. after vincente montano attacked a family with pepper spray and a hatchet, he cracked open a canister of propane. police say he also had lighter fluid likely attempting to set off a bomb but he was stopped in his tracks by an officer after pulling out a pellet gun that looked real. >> immediately upon entering the

relief doesn't get any better than this. advil. well, we got a runaway goat here caused a bit of a scare appearing on interstate 85 in charlotte, north carolina, at the height of the evening rush and just as animal control officers were about to corral the goat, it jumped over the median dodging traffic going in the other direction. it was safely captured. nobody including the goat hurt. if you're heading out this morning be on the lookout for heavy rain and flooded roadways in the mid-atlantic especially in the carolinas. also flash flood warnings in parts of arizona and new mexico. >> and if you're flying, airport delays possible today in washington, d.c. and charlotte. turn to the nhl now following developments in the investigation of one of its biggest stars. >> patrick kane has played a big role helping the chicago blackhawks win three championships in the last six years, but now he's the subject of a sexual assault investigation near his summer

residence near buffalo, new york. reports say police are looking into an alleged incident involving kane and a woman that began in a bar last weekend. kane has not been charged. a united airlines passenger is facing multiple charges after punching another passenger and later hitting a police officer at chicago's o'hare airport. crew members say it all started when he refused to turn off his cell phone before takeoff so the plane had to return to the gate. police say he was so unruly, they had to tackle him to the ground. well, the coast guard has announced a massive drug bust off mexico. it seized 12,000 pounds of cocaine from a makeshift submarine that was partially submerged. the drugs valued at more than $180 million making it the largest bust in coast guard history. four suspected smugglers were arrested. they had to arrest the cookie lady. the carolina cookie lady locked up for fraud. say it ain't so.

police say vickie gaynor would go around town selling homemade cookies to send her kids to church camp. one problem, she wasn't baking them. she was buying them at walmart. the other problem, her kids never went to church camp and she was also charged with forging a prescription to get the pain medication oxycodone earlier than prescribed. turn to southwest colorado now where an environmental cleanup crew accidentally triggered a spill of mine waste in the animas river. they created a stream of mustard colored muck and they got a close-up look. the river has been closed to the public. the epa insists the drinking water in that is safe, but the impact on fish and wildlife still not clear. >> it does look more like mustard than gatorade. >> drink it if you want to. soccer fans you have plenty to be excited about. the english premier league kicks off tomorrow. >> as for yesterday's payable
