us this morning. i'm looking at the "the new york times." it says trump steals the show. we heard you say the questions were unfair. you tweeted megyn kelly and her fellow moderators were not professional. are you worried they drew blood? >> number one, i had a great time. it probably got record ratings. i wonder what they would have been if i wasn't in the mix. interesting to see, frankly. i had a great time. some of the candidates i got to know. i never met. i didn't know and they were really great people. i really had a wonderful evening but the questions asked of me were much, much more difficult and poignant and really unfair than other people were asked but that was okay. i guess that's part of the game when you're number one in the poll, i guess that's what happens. >> the others got tough questions, as well. republicans seem most bothered by your lack of a pledge to the nominee if it's not you. you said it depends on how the party treats you. what i want to know if you are not the nominee what would the

republican party, what would the nominee have to do to convince you not to run as an independent? >> well, if i respect the nominee, which is very important to me, again, i'm not really a politician, i mean, i'm running the opposite because -- >> you are a politician now, aren't you? >> well, i don't view myself as a politician to be honest with you, george. i think i'm somebody that's going to try to straighten out this country and make america great again. that's what i'm looking to do but i want to run as a republican. i want to win as a republican. that's the best chance of winning. but depending on what happens, we will see and, you know, i've been treated very nicely but if i'm treated with respect which i should be, and if i like the person running i'm not running as an independent, i want to run as a republican. i think everyone knows that. i think the rnc knows that and that's what i'm looking to do and that's certainly the best chance of winning. >> did you see anyone else up there on the stage last night who you could support? >> oh, absolutely. i don't want to mention names now but there were numerous people. i have a lot of respect for a lot of the people up on the stage. >> anyone not impress you?

>> i don't want to get into that either but i must tell you i really got to know some of the people last night. that was a pretty heated deal. i guess they said it would be record stuff, record type of ratings and it was a very heated evening and you sort of are in the trenches with people and, george, it was -- it was a fascinating night and i really did get to like some of the candidates. >> it was a fascinating night for all. you did get pressed hard on a lot of things including your past positions, you used to say you were pro-choice. now you say you're pro-life. did you learn anything from those questions? do you think you'll have to change anything as we head into the next debate. >> i evolved. i mean ronald reagan was a democrat. he became a republican. he was sort of a liberal democrat actually and, you know, you evolve and things happen and i'm pro-life and other things that we talk about. i actually discussed single payer and why it no longer would work and could have worked years ago but it won't work now and we talked about that and i think i

gave full answers on that. we discussed all things, but, you know, you grow and you evolve and that's what happens with me and that's what happens with most people on that stage. >> you know, before we go what was unfair about megyn kelly's questions? >> well, i think, number one, i'm not sure and i'm checking this out. you know, some of the statements she made about the women i don't recognize those words whatsoever. i mean we're going to look at that very carefully but i don't recognize those words. >> you take them back if you did say them? >> she came up with words i didn't recognize so we'll see what happens. we'll take a serious look at it but when i said the rosie o'donnell thing that got the biggest -- i would say the biggest laugh, applause, et cetera, of the evening. i mean that was a pretty startling noise in that arena, so, look, it was an amazing evening. i'm not complaining about anything. i think that -- i think i did very well. you know drudge had me as number one and "time" magazine had me as number one and "the new york times" has me as number one.

>> "time" magazine says they're still compiling results but -- we'll see. >> i think i'm way ahead, george, in all fairness. >> i guess. >> pretty hard when you have a 40 some odd percent of the vote. pretty hard to beat. >> that may be. will you be the front-runner going to the next debate? >> i would think so. some people, most people the real pro said that based on the performance last night my numbers should even go up. i'm at 26%. we just had in south carolina mid-30s, in north carolina, mid-30s and nevada we're doing great and won the hispanic vote in nevada, which is very interesting and i say i'm going to win the hispanic vote. i won the hispanic vote. we had incredible numbers in georgia, in the mid-30s. >> we will be -- >> we are doing pretty well. >> we will be watching. thanks. you heard donald trump say he thinks he's going to go up after the debate. do you agree? >> he thinks he wins just about

everything he does. i think he dominated the debate but i think his momentum has stalled. to me it reminds me of buying a house, find the house which you've never seen before and then you call the inspectors in and start to say, wait a second. there's cracks here and you may have foundation problems. that's what happened. people are going to pause for a second. his momentum has slowed. 'definitely not going up after last night and the biggest mistake he didn't show up and take it to a presidential gravitas level. he stayed at his same sort of mannerism shtick he's come into the debate with. >> he decided to play the game that brought him there in the first place. there were some strong performances last night. i was struck by marco rubio and john kasich. >> i thought of the winners, three winners, first marco rubio. i thought he was the most inspirational in the course of the evening, young new generation. i thought john kasich was the most dependable. somebody you could see as president and carly fiorina in the earlier debate, my expectations because she was the most logical is going to jump up into the next debate and be on the main stage in the next debate so one of those ten will fall. and she's rising. >> anyone not meet the mark. >> i thought jeb who needed to

get restarted on his momentum didn't show up. he was probably the biggest loser of the night. not any specific mistake but just no energy there at all and i think he needs it. he's going to need every dollar of his $100 million to try to get back in the race because he didn't do well last night. >> matt dowd, see you sunday on "this week." hillary clinton said she couldn't watch the debate. was holding a fund-raiser in california. look at this, kim kardashian tweeted out a picture of her and kanye west last night. she, of course, is the democratic front-runner. drew fire and we'll talk about it all sunday on "this week." >> we will be watching. thank you, george. moving now though to a major breach at the pentagon. hackers breaking into an e-mail system used by our top military leaders. the attack believed to have possibly come from russia or china. abc's martha raddatz is in washington with the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, lara. the u.s. is pointing the finger at china or russia. the leading suspect, russia and they're not just talking about a couple of russian hackers, they mean state sponsored hacking with the blessing of russia's

secretive and aggressive president vladimir putin. think about it, the pentagon is one of the most secure facilities in the world and yet hackers were able to penetrate that system. the good news is this was the unclassified e-mail system but you're still talking about at least 2500 people on what's called the joint staff, war planners, decisionmakers, people who the russians would love to know more about. and while this attack was sophisticated, it was also dangerously simple. it was a phishing attack meaning they dummied up an e-mail or login that looked so real that a member of the joint staff could have been fooled by it, lara. >> so real looking. so what are we doing about this problem? >> reporter: well, the pentagon mostly plays defense and head of cybercommand is urging the administration to get more aggressive saying we are at a tipping point, lara. >> martha raddatz in washington, thank you very much. turning now to that severe weather overnight, storms from california to the midwest.

that walmart we showed you battered by a possible tornado. ginger following it all. good morning, ginger. >> hey, good morning to you. you can see inside that walmart after the storm went through, they will do a survey to determine if that was a tornado, but, listen, there were more than 128 severe storm report, south dakota to south carolina. at least five reported tornadoes from minnesota to alabama. driving rain, and stunning storm structure in south dakota. at least five people injured at this walmart in troy, alabama. a possible tornado shredding the store. the roof collapsing. winds blowing everything off the shelves and in the parking lot, the storm flipping semi trucks. storms flooding parts of the southeast and mid-atlantic. heavy rain and gusts to 60 miles per hour destroying homes and plucking trees. in charleston, south carolina, this time lapse capturing the moment as lightning stings the land. splitting this tree in two.

and now we go to taiwan where we are just hours from landfall. that typhoon is making its way to taiwan. the northern half, northeast going to get the worst of it. we're losing life. an 8-year-old lost her life in the ocean. the high surf going to be an issue. storm surge will rise up to 10 feet. others were rescued in that same surf and not just that, you guys, it's the rainfall that i'm concerned about. we have pictures from saipan, what happened there is just minimal compared to what could happen in some of the mountains in taiwan, the landslides, flash flooding. we will cover this for the next 24 hours. george and lara. >> ginger, thank you very much. amy with the other top stories starting with a big announcement from a very influential senator. >> one of the top democrats, lara, says he will vote against the obama administration's nuclear deal with iran. new york senator charles schumer is now the most senior democrat to oppose the president. schumer says he believes iran will never change. despite his move opponents do not appear to have enough votes to sink the deal.

and new details now about the man shot after launching that attack in a tennessee movie theater. police now say vincente montano had cannisters of propane and lighter fluid suggesting he may have been planning on setting off an explosion. he was said to be angry and hearing voices when he attacked movie-goers with a hatchet. and pepper spray. thankfully no one was seriously injured. and in medical news a tenth person has now died in that outbreak of legionnaires' disease in new york. the total number of cases has reached 100. the outbreak blamed on cooling towers on top of an apartment building. all cases have been isolated to sections of the south bronx, but also overnight a fatal case of legionnaires has been confirmed in cleveland. in southwest colorado, a big mistake by epa workers. they were investigating contamination at a gold mine when they triggered a spill sending a million gallons of mine waste flooding into the animas river turning the water a mustard yellow color. look at that. the river is closed until health

officials can confirm the water is safe. and in northern colorado a massive fire erupted when this natural gas pipeline was struck by workers in the area. the flames and the smoke seen for miles, the fire burning for hours, nobody was injured. and as kids start heading back to school a new report warns classes are starting too early in the morning. the cdc saying five out of every six middle schools and high schools start classes earlier than 8:30 making it hard for teens to get the sleep they need to be healthy. it recommends later start times so kids can avoid being chronically sleep deprived. a back-to-school spelling lesson for teachers and students alike. take a look at the sign placed outside a middle school in dallas. students returning from summer vacation greeted with the message we are glad you are hear. parents pounced on social media saying the school staff can't hide behind auto correct. the superintendent saying it was an honest mistake anyone could make and superintendent -- >> just unfortunate.

speaking out about the case of mistaken identity that has him behind bars. >> it's not what i did that is the problem. it's who was involved. >> reporter: brent farley charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct after an anonymous tip on facebook about a fugitive led him and nearly a dozen bounty hunters to the home of the phoenix chief of police, joseph yahner. >> what is your emergency? >> we have some -- i don't know if they're bounty hunters or what they are, but they just banged on our door. >> reporter: the situation quickly escalating. farley was the aggressor. >> once the situation got de-escalated one of the individuals that remained there that we booked into jail ultimately was still refusing to leave the home. was demanding that he identify himself. >> reporter: but farley says not so. >> when the chief opened the door, he was aggressive. i backed off. >> reporter: he also denies the police allegations he had his weapon unholstered during the confrontation. >> at no time did i point a

weapon at anybody. >> reporter: but state officials say farley shouldn't have been there in the first place. >> i do not have a license as a bounty hunter in arizona. >> all right, guys, they say the police got it wrong on a couple of things. there were 7, not 11 bounty hunters out there. his daughter, 11-year-old daughter was actually out there with them at the time. now investigators are looking into whether this was a hoax. did somebody call up, call these bounty hunters and send them specifically to that officer's house, maybe they wanted to see a deadly confrontation. maybe it was just supposed to be a joke but now it's taken on a different level of seriousness. >> all right, t.j., thanks. let's go to amy in the social square. 7:41 back with "gma investigates." this morning sunroofs that shatter for seemingly no reason. sometimes while you're even driving. and after getting hundreds of complaints, a government agency is now investigating. abc's mara schiavocampo has the details. >> reporter: this woman says her sunroof spontaneously exploded while waiting at a stop sign. >> all of a sudden we hear what sounded like a gunshot. >> reporter: wade owens says his shattered while driving on the highway. >> the glass caves in, boom. >> reporter: plus, more stories online about drivers in shock. >> my sunroof exploded in front of my eyes. >> glass expert mash meshalum demonstrates what it looks like when a sunroof shatters. even pushing it down to simulate it falling on the driver.

>> the cracks go at over 3,000 miles an hour so in an absolute instant this glass is completely broken. >> what's going on? >> reporter: most are made of tempered glass for your safety breaking into smaller more rounded pieces instead of sharp dangerous shards but experts say that can lead to spontaneous shattering if there's a manufacturing defect. >> the glass is constantly in tension and just like when you put a pin in a balloon it catastrophically breaks, the same thing happens with tempered glass. >> reporter: "gma investigates" finding nearly 400 complaints in the national highway traffic safety administration's database across all makes and models. nhtsa telling us it's reviewing the complaints and investigating certain kia sorentos. kia is telling us it's evaluating the performance of the panoramic sunroofs in the 2011 to 2013 vehicles but in their investigation have found only foreign objects such as rocks and gravel have been

♪ welcome back to "gm . welcome back to "gma." time for the "heat index" and this morning's hot button. that surprise wedding, jennifer aniston and justin theroux tie the knot in a secret ceremony. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: it's the biggest secret wedding ever, after a three-year engagement and constant guessing about just when they would finally tie the knot, jennifer aniston and justin theroux made it official wednesday night. the hollywood power couple getting married in the backyard of their bel air home. the yard made into a casual lounge with cozy nooks, ottomans, a raised stage. more than 70 guests were invited including former cast mates and longtime friends lisa kudrow and courteney cox. as well as ellen degeneres and her wife portia and comedians chelsea handler and jimmy kimmel. they all thought they were

but when it comes to how to handle them, most parents are divided. some choosing to love their toddlers through it. >> parents can really use it as a teachable moment to show their kids how to problem solve and to teach them how to express themselves. >> reporter: and others choosing to ignore the fit and enforce a time-out. >> when a child is really being defiant, they're hitting, they're overwhelmed with emotion, that child is best suited for a time-out. >> reporter: but before parental battle lines are drawn a new study says both sides are actually right. reers from oklahoma state university interviewed 102 moms who provided details descriptions of five times they had to discipline their kids for hitting, whining or defiance and found out toddlers needed reasoning. and punishments. mother of three says when it comes to her little ones she prefers the nurturing approach especially for her 4-year-old son. >> i try to calm him down, get him, you know, whether to use

his words or get control over his emotions and then from there decide what my next step is. >> reporter: for "good morning america," reena ninan, abc news, new york. >> all right, joining us now are parenting expert ericka souter and dr. richard besser. ericka, what do you think about this? >> the first thing to remember from the study there is no one size fits all way to discipline your kid. every kid is different. it's about knowing your kid. the second great thing is that we're now hearing time-outs can be a good thing and we should utilize them when it's appropriate. the study had lots of interesting information. that small demographic of moms felt -- many felt negotiating with your kid, talking them through their tantrum or the upset period was a good idea but interestingly enough in the long term that method may not be so helpful. >> when they're teenagers and talk back, i know. >> definitely doesn't work. so you're a pediatrician, how does this stack up with what you recommend? >> it's in line.

there is no one way to did this. there is a whole variety of tools so in addition -- there's times when you want to negotiate and compromise but there are other things you should know about. the first one is called natural consequences. so you have a little child there. you give them a cookie. they throw it on the floor. you don't keep replacing it. logical consequence, they have a toy. they break it. you don't keep replacing it. they learn you break your toy and it's gone. there's withholding privileges which tends to work as kids get older and things they want to do. >> that's effective. >> no phone. >> exactly. >> and then time-outs. time-outs can be really effective but so many parents talk to me about how hard they are and challenging to get going. >> yeah, the time-outs thing, i did that a lot but when you have a child that's kicking and screaming like a full-blown tantrum it's hard to get them to stay. >> if you threaten the time-out you have to follow through on this. you have to keep going and the next thing you want to do is you want to make sure you do it immediately. don't wait a half hour or until they calm down. get down to their level and you explain, this is why you're in a time-out.

this is what you've done. >> you add time if -- that's what i always did, the longer you do it, the longer you're going to be there. >> in the middle of it, it's hard to do it. >> it is. >> so best advice as you said there is no one right -- one fit for all. so what would you say to parents who are like, i'm still not sure which way to go. >> learn the tools. trust your instincts. make sure both parents are on the same page. >> good call. >> and lastly recognize when you as a parent also need a time-out. >> walk away. >> i do. >> times you have to walk away. >> can you take a nap? >> mommy needs a time-out. >> yes. >> usually involves wine. all right, hey, we want to thank both of you and let you know we asked do you give your children time-outs? 74% of you said you did. 26% said no. the other question will be whether they work. >> that's next week. our super shopping secrets turning your trash to treasure.
