>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler, thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 9th. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning. hi, everyone. you see the sunshine behind you. your sunday is starting out sunnier and cooler for most because the marine layer has been disrupted. the exploratorium camera looks brilliant out there. many have dropped off to cooler readings. it was 48 in santa rosa this morning, 57 in morgan hill, 58 san francisco. parts of the peninsula breezy. but today a warmer day for most and the stratus should clear to the coast. we are looking at temperatures from the upper 60s to the lower 70s in san francisco. around the bay 70s and 80s. upper 80s to low 90s.

we will pinpoint your warmer sunday and talk about a cooler week ahead in just a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. in developing news this morning, the u.s. forest service is reporting one of its firefighters has died after a tree fell on him. according to the so he shallated press, he was hit last night working in a new fire in a remote area between the lake tahoe basin management and eldorado national forest. a second firefighter was injured, but was treated and released. firefighters credit cooler weather with helping them gain ground against that massive wildfire burning near clear lake. officials lifted all evacuations orders yesterday. the rocky fire is now 70% contained. it charred 109 square miles. the flames have also destroyed 43 homes. about 3,000 firefighters are still on the front lines.

cal fire expects to have it fully contained by thursday. an oakland musician is apologizing to his fans for being kicked out of outside lands, accused of scalping performer tickets. outside lands is the sold-out music event of the year and people are doing whatever they can to get inside outside lands. including jumping the fence. our abc7 news crew caught these fence jumpers on video. but that hasn't been the only issue. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow caught up with the band musician. >> oakland artist and performer fantastic negreto getting sidelined before the show. >> out of nowhere ten sfpd officers rush us and grab us and handcuff us and instruct us to get on the ground. >> officers detained three people after receiving information they were pedaling

artists writsbands not meant for resale. >> acting on a tip from another entertainer who advised us of what was going on. so our officers then looked into it, went to the location and see the transaction take place. >> apparently an intern from our office had sold one wristband. he had nothing to do with it. outside lands, according to sfpd, making the decision to call off the show. as for his fans -- >> well, that's unfortunate, but i will play for them again. it's not over. >> for one ticket they used us as an example, and that's what hurt me and i hurt for outside lands. nobody wants it. were we jumping the fence? no. >> although there were fence jumpers and no word if they were cited. abc7 news. >> san francisco police said

they will give arrests and citation totals after it is over. outside lands wraps up tonight with elton john. in the south bay police are investigating after a standoff ended on royal crest drive in san jose last night. that's where a police dog helped officers capture a wanted felon. paramedics took the suspect to a hospital. it is not clear if he was bitten by the police dog. investigator say the situation started in sunnyvale where undercover officers started following the man, ending in san jose. >> this morning a man is in jail accused of killing his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter in redwood city. police say they received a call about a child not breathing at an apartment complex on madison avenue. the girl died after being rushed to a hospital thursday afternoon. detectives arrested daniel contreras yesterday. police say contreras told them the child fell, but the coronor performed an autopsy and determined someone killed her.

san francisco 49er's coach jim tomsula said there was no fight between former linebacker aldon smith and quarterback colin kaepernick before smith's dui arrest on thursday. >> i don't know where that could even come from. no. >> abc7 news was at levi stadium yesterday as tomsula shot down rumors of a smith-kaepernick beef. the team released smith on friday after his fifth arrest since 2012. he is now out on bail. a car fire shut down traffic on highway 4 and discovery bay. it began just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. in the westbound lanes near regatta drive. we were sent this photo of the car engulfed in flames. it also started a grass fire that was quickly put out.

if you have photos or video of news in your community, we want to see it. you can post them using #abc7now. we may show them on air or use them in the news. police are asking anyone with a private security camera to register it. officers often use surveillance footage to help them identify suspects and even solve crimes. the registration will not give police remote access to your home or business security camera. tens of thousands of people packed into at&t park last night. it was not to see the giants. instead of cheering for base hits and strikeouts, people were applauding mega-church leaders, joel and victoria olsteen. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details on what was called a night of hope. >> they wore crazy worshiper shirts and flew in from as far

away from toronto, canada for this event. >> we have friends that live in san francisco and i have family in anaheim. when we saw he was coming to san francisco in august, we made it a family vacation. >> nearly a packed house in the park for people who are not lock for a home run, they looking for hope. >> it's a message that resonates with a woman who drove from modesto. >> there is a path for you. for instance, i just lost my job. i'm okay with that because i believe a door closed and another one will open. >> our message is how can we lift someone up and with god's help they can still fulfill their destiny. >> we talked with him before he took the stage. this is a sold-out event for a people spending 18 bucks for a chance to soak in what some people call a prosperity gospel. >> i hope you know right now that god is smiling down on you. >> olsteen's ministry operates

in some areas, flooding streets and causing mudslides. more than 1 million people are without power. hundreds of flights have been cancelled. the prime minister of japan is vowing to do everything he can to prevent the introduction of atomic weapons into his country. today is the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of nagasaki. a large crowd gathered in the city to pray for peace. nagasaki was the second and last city to experience an atomic bombing august 9, 1945. hiroshima was the first, three days earlier. most military experts agree the bombings helped shorten world war ii in the pacific by several months. san francisco is one of 26 cities worldwide holding rallies today against atomic weapons. the group global zero will hold a rally at 3:30 at dolores park. demonstrators, bicyclists and the public will participate by

cycling the equivalent of the circumference of a small nuclear blast, about 7 miles. san jose honored the legacy of the world war ii generation yesterday with the spirit of 45-day. the police department tweeted these pictures of the world war ii 70th annivesary commemorative celebration weekend at history park. it was august 14, 1945, when president truman announced japan surrendered, sparking celebrations for the end of world war ii. new zealand native, now san francisco resident kim chambers became the first woman to swim from the farallon islands to the golden gate bridge. a 30-mile, 17-hour journey through shark-infested waters. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow met up with her at the san francisco yacht club and has the story of her record-breaking story. farallon islands to the golden gate bridge. >> i'm in shock. i mean, i wanted that honor, but, you know, it's always up to mother nature. >> mother nature and sharks. kim, who is from new zealand, managing to elude them. >> i guess great white sharks don't like kiwis. >> chambers said one of the biggest challenges was keeping 17-hour, 12-minute journey. food down during her 17-hour, 12-minute journey. the temperatures in the low 60s, mom rooting for her the entire time. >> i knew internally what she was going through, and it's really hard not to reach out because it's my daughter. but i just kept -- i was just amazed at how she had such mental fortitude and physical determination to finish. >> also cheering, her training partner, simon, who attempted the same swim last week. >> i may be justified in not

finishing my swim, only three miles away, but the fact kim was successful, the disappointment of not finishing for me is now completely gone. >> kim says she swims for charity and to inspire little girls. >> dream big. you don't know what may happen and you might surprise yourself. >> even if you are the first. abc7 news. >> baseball history will be made in the north bay this week when a woman will pitch for the team. it's the independent san rafael pacific. the sailors will tour the rubber this wednesday. the santa barbara native signed a one-day contract to become the first woman on the roster in the club's history. the pacifics have been involved in other firsts. last month they became the first professional team to use an automated umpire. and another team in the league, the sonoma stompers, recently showcased the first openly gay professional baseball player, shawn conroy. a follow-up now on a

photographer who took pictures of a youth league team, but never delivered the photos. "7 on your side" michael finney has been looking for that photographer for months and finally found him. >> the back of el christian junior falcons and their parents wanted to remember moments like these. >> we had a photographer come out and take some pictures and cash all our checks and take all our money and didn't produce any pictures. >> his name was clyde jones. after a while he stopped returning their phone calls. didn't return mine either. >> is clyde here? >> so i went looking for him. he wasn't at the business address indicated on his website. he wasn't at his last known personal address in fairfield either. i aired a report and heard from others who told us they were taken in by clyde too. among them, amy wilkerson. >> i was the program director for the oakland pal dukes.

>> happening today, the a's will honor the memory of fallen police sergeant scott lunger. his father and two daughters will participate in the ceremonial first pitch in this afternoon's game against the astros. hall of famer ricky henderson will catch the ball from sergeant lunger's father. henderson was his favorite player. they will also hang a jersey with his badge number 106 in the back of their dugout during the game. lunger was shot and killed in a traffic stop two weeks ago. this is just one of several tributes to that sergeant. >> exactly. it's a brilliant day out there. it's not only warmer, if you like that, but it's sunnier sooner and the marine layer has backed off, the winds as well. as a result, we have some very mild 9:00 a.m. temperatures. live doppler hd, you see some of the stratus pulling away from the bay.

not going to make it totally sunny at the beaches, but at least today one of the warmer days out of the next seven. here's the reason why. there's an upper level low off the british columbia coast. it's not going to impact us today, but as it begins to move inland, the marine layer ramps up and we will cool off quickly. here's a look from the sutro tower cam. a look at the city with the fog frame it. 60 san francisco. mountain view 66. no wind in morgan hill. you drop to 57. in fact, morning temperatures were in the 40s and widespread 50s with our clear sky and very little wind. but now we are recovering and our exploratorium camera shows a bank of low clouds out there. and where the numbers are responding to, about three hours of sunshine in the eastern valleys. 69 degrees. concord leading the way. up livermore, 66 novato. these numbers were in the 40s and 50s so already a humor jump for the north bay.

a 24 hour temperature change. and you were about 13 degrees cooler a couple hours ago and now three or four degrees warmer than this time yesterday in the north bay. you see livermore and san jose still kind of cool. emeryville, it's lightening up. you see the golden gate bridge in the distance. overall, partly cloudy, briefly warmer today and cooler air arrives for not only tomorrow but much of the work week. we show you why from this area of low pressure here. out ahead of it is a ridge. the ridge gets pumped up ahead of it. that brings us a brief warmup for your sunday afternoon. it looks like this in san jose. notice not much of a change. the afternoon high 82 and then you drop about 3 degrees and pretty much stay there, hovering around 80 all week long. pretty nice, but by next weekend modest warmup for most of you. highs today in the south bay around san jose, even warmer. santa cruz sunny and 79. on the peninsula we have more 80s from menlo park and los

gatos. almost there in mountain view at 9. 81 redwood city. san francisco in the low 70s. warming up today. and you still have some of the fog here at the coast with upper 60s from pacifica. notice the reds and or ranks creeping into the north bay. that's where the warmth really gets going while it stays pleasant from oakland and union city. 80 castro valley. check out the orange and yellow line here. to the low 90s out by the delta. less of a breeze there. the accuweather seven-day forecast then, the cooler breeze arrives tomorrow. that will cool everyone down except at the coast. it will stay pretty much status quo. then right through the middle of the week it's comfortable and just slightly warmer into next weekend. you can see what's showing up on live doppler 7hd anytime with the abc7 news weather app. it's free. we have more information at abc7news.com/apps. if we around going to get rain, which we don't this time of

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. we have been watching our marine layer really shrink. the result is a sunny golden gate bridge where temperatures are being impacted by some earlier sun, except around morgan hill, where less wind has allowed you to experience cooler temperatures this morning. 57 there. 62 half moon bay. 61 oakland. and mt. tam you can see the clouds scattering out and warmer numbers over the east bay

valleys, upper 60s. even santa rosa, 62 degrees. we are looking at the fog still hung up on parts ofethe peninsula and clearing all of the east bay. it means a sunnier beach day for some and some warmer weather today. we will tell you how warm in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. we have breaking news out of texas this morning where deputies say they have a suspect in custody after finding eight bodies, five of them children, inside a home. deputies were conducting a welfare check in harris county when they learned the man, who would not let them inside, had warrant for aggravated assault on a family member. one of the officers looked inside a window and saw the body of a young child. >> upon entering the home and clearing it for any other subjects and to check for the welfare of any other people inside the house, the bodies of eight victims were found inside the residence. at this time we have what appear to be five children and three

adults. >> authorities aren't saying how the victims died or their relationship to the suspect. >> republican presidential candidate donald trump is fighting back this morning against the backlash created by his own remarks, especially those concerning a female news anchor. abc's devin reports. >> businessman donald trump! >> this morning the republican party is in turmoil. donald trump facing a major shake-up inside his presidential campaign. a spokesman telling abc news he fired long time political advisor roger stone. a charge stone denied on twitter, saying he fired trump over the attacks on megyn kelly, fox news anchor. >> you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. >> there's a tsunami of criticism of what he seems to imply against women.

>> i really think it was inappropriate and i don't want him at my event. >> he was dumped from the lineup of conservatives in a lineup at atlanta. he asked to clarify his comments and he said you could see blood come out of her wherever, nose. he said political correctness is killing our country. weakness. trump supporters lashed out in his defense. i have e-mails from people referring to me as gay, and that donald trump is standing up to all of us. but now his rivals were standing up to him. once timid, many taking a tougher line. carly fiorini, the only gop woman, said mr. trump, there is no excuse. governor scott walker states he agrees, and jeb bush. >> come on. give me a break. we want to win. what domed trump said is wrong. >> and donald trump still refuses to apologize to megyn

kelly. many top leaders are anxious that the attacks could hurt their chances to attract women voters. abc news, washington. >> donald trump is denying he hates women, saying he believes women can be, quote, killers in a good way. a lot of you just saw trump on "this week." the presidential candidate defend himself against the allegations he hates women saying female voters are giving him his margin in the policy. trump later explained when he meant when he called women killers in a 1997 book. >> they are phenomenal, and i have many executives that are women. they are doing a phenomenal job. i pay them a tremendous amount of money. they make money for me, they make money for themselves, and in many cases they truly are really talented and they can be killers. >> trump adds, no matter what, his campaign is full speed

ahead. a montana hiker found dead in yellowstone national park was killed by a grizzly bear. the park said tracks were found from at least one female bear and a cub. the map's found was found friday. he was defensive wounds on his fore arms. game wardens in florida say they killed an alligator early this morning that they believe bit off a woman's arm yesterday. it happened yesterday afternoon while the woman swam in a river near orlando. people canoeing and kayaking nearby heard her screams. one of them beat the alligator with a paddle while it continued to attack the woman. those folks then pulled her from the water. the 37-year-old victim was then rushed into surgery. >> whatever your weekend plans involve, they probably have not topped this next story. that is daredevil billionaire elon musk, the man behind tesla electric cars and spacex.

what is he doing on top of that plane? abc news reporter sarah haynes has the details. >> elon musk, living life on the edge. look as he performs this death defying stunt. taking a stroll on top of a flying plane. a man worth $13.2 billion, considered by many to be a leader of the future, risking his life the just a normal day for him. >> a billionaire playboy philanthropist. >> and liftoff. >> he created spacex, the private rocket company, and launched tesla motors, one of the world's first all-electric sports cars. musk is married to a model, and when he's not busy being one of the world's greatest living inventors, he spends his time jet setting and dabbling in

other extreme sports like kite boarding. he shared his day with the wing walking team in hampshire, i think land, and one very supportive wife. she even took this photo, which musk posted to. it said, "went for a nice wing walk. what could possibly go wrong? >> let's check out sports. the giants will try to avoid being swept at wrigley field by the cubs. first pitch at 11:20 this morning. also, two more bay area greats are now enshrined in the pro football hall of fame. here's mike shumann with more in this morning's sports. >> good morning. well, the pro football hall of fame with eight new inductees yesterday in canton, ohio. largest group since 1967. former 49 charles haley gets the call, well-deserved. he's the only one in nfl history to win five super bowl rings. and mr. d, he ac manied the team aspect of his sport. i am truly blessed by god.

i have played with some of the greatest players ever in the history of football, and i've learned a lot. and the one thing i learned about these guys is unselfish play. team matters. we need to go back to that. it's not an individual sport team. that's the only way we can have success. >> mr. raider, tim brown, also gets the nod. 17 year career, almost 15,000 yards receiving. 1,000 the 4 catches. and 109 touchdowns. he went to nine pro goals in nine different seasons. he put up these numbers with 19 different quarterbacks. even more impressive. talked about his hall of fame coach, freddy. >> so the first practice that we had, you know, i ran the roll-out, i dropped the ball or something, and fred must have cursed me like no man has ever cursed me before. so i practiced the rest of the day with a little tear in my eye and after practice i went to freddy, and i said freddy, we aren't going to make it like that.

i need for you to talk to me a little differently. so we worked that thing out and after 15 years we had an incredible relationship. >> congratulations to both. giants struggle in the dog days of august. after winning 13 of 15 at home they hit the road and yesterday in chicago. with yesterday's loss they are 3-6 away from home. matt cain on the hill. a home run, two-run shot and 2-1 giants. the cubs fan trying to disrespect him and throw it back. he needs a little work on his game. cain couldn't hold the lead. bottom of three. a homer. five runs, 4 innings, 3-2 cubbies. tied at 3 but montero knocked in another run. that was in the ticket. base hit and start of two-run fifth. adds three more in the eighth. addison russell, the former a. cubs needed the three runs because the giants rally, but come up short. cubs win their third straight over the giants, 8-6, the final.

this morning. you can see the cloud cover. the low clouds still will be with us in patches at the coast. but really a nice-looking day with upper 60s from fairfield and concord. the west wind really backing off. that's why we are still mild this morning. even up in the north bay with a cooler start. temperatures are recovering into the mid-60s already. here's our vollmer peak camera. there's the deck of low clouds. mild temperatures this morning. briefly warmer today. then with that sea breeze kicking up later on today the marine layer is back, it cools us off as soon as tomorrow. in fact, much of the week ahead. so there's the area of low pressure. but it's a brief ridge of high pressure, then it's warming us up out ahead of it. with that we will look for temperatures not only here, but even in the sacramento valley to be warmer. it's dryer in the sierra nevada with 9 there. at the coast it will be comfortable. 69. the clouds kind of hanging on
