good morning, i'm phillip mena. >> and i'm reena ninan. we begin with breaking news. out of ferguson, missouri. bullets flying overnight as protesters mark one year since the fatal police shooting of michael brown. [ gunfire ] >> take cover. >> cover! >> police say officers came under heavy gunfire overnight. they returned fire. and one man was shot. he's now in critical condition. here's a look at the bullet holes in the unmarked cars. police say bottles and bricks were thrown at officers. stores were also looted. this violence coming hours after a peaceful march. for from kenneth moton. >> reporter: shots fired overnight in ferguson, missouri. the moment captured during an interview with interim ferguson police chief andre anderson. [ gunfire ] >> chief? where you at? >> reporter: the violence broke out around 11:00 p.m. police in riot gear trying to

keep peace and order. st. louis county said officers got into a gun fight with protesters, leaving cars with bullet holes. >> what we have done to date is we allow people to protest. we allow people to disseminate. we have given them plenty of egress so they can leave. >> reporter: the unrest comes on the one-year anniversary of the death of 18-year-old michael brown. an unarmed black man killed by white police officer darren wilson, who was later cleared of wrongdoing. the incident caused riots in the city. outrage across the country. and protests from coast to coast were sparked. igniting the black lives matter movement. >> give all my love to my family, my friends, my people, my new friends. >> reporter: yesterday, brown's father led hundreds of demonstrators in a quiet march. they surrounded a memorial. the spot where brown's lifeless body laid in the street. a "washington post" analysis shows 24 black men shot and killed by police this year. so many here still demanding justice. >> they are not going to give it to us! they have not given it to us yet! >> reporter: and the protests will continue today in ferguson. it's a planned day of civil disobedience.

police say they are ready to protect businesses and law-abiding residents. phillip and reena? >> thank you, kenneth. still a very active scene right now in ferguson. >> we want to take a look here at these pictures coming in. police in riot gear standing face to face with protesters. another image showing a man with a shotgun standing in front of a store. reports say he's the store owner, fending off possible looters. >> jim ryan with abc radio is live in ferguson where a press conference just wrapped up. jim, ferguson police chief john belmar calling the scene chaotic. saying other individuals were armed. six, in fact. do police have any idea where those people are? >> reporter: none at all. the st. louis county police chief saying those -- at least six other people who might have had guns ran off into the darkness that surrounds florison avenue. this all happening very close to the site where the gas station

was torched last year. it's gone now. demonstrations are continuing. it involved at least two groups of people who had guns. one man ran toward police cars, opened fire on one police suv, according to the chief. that's when he was shot by the police officers inside the vehicle. >> you have been covering this ferguson situation for the past year now. the riots, the looting, everything from the beginning. can you tell us, what is the feeling right now on the ground? how does it compare to a year ago? >> reporter: it's really similar. very much like what we were feeling a week after the shooting last year. you remember, it took a few days before protests really ramped up. then at some point, people in those crowds had guns. that's what we have seen here today and throughout the weekend. so now police are on guard. they'll be watching again tomorrow, monday, tuesday, as the demonstrations are expected to continue. they hope, of course, that they don't turn violent again. >> and already reports of

possible civil disobedience today. we'll certainly be watching this. jim ryan on the ground. thank you so much. turning to presidential politics now. donald trump is refusing to back down from the comments he made about megyn kelly. >> trump made the rounds of the sunday talk shows to defend himself, saying i cherish women. here's devin dwyer. >> reporter: under fire and firing back, donald trump standing by insults he hurled at fox debate moderator megyn kelly. >> no apologies to megyn kelly? >> no, not at all. she asked me a very nasty question. i have nothing against her. but she asked me a nasty question. >> reporter: on abc's "this week," trump defending his comments that set off a firestorm. >> blood coming out of her wherever. >> reporter: insisting he didn't mean to imply anything inappropriate. >> i was referring to nose, ears. they're very common statements. only a deviant would think of what people said. >> reporter: the republican front-runner with a recent history of controversial comments about immigrants and p.o.w.s, now arguing he has no problem with women. >> i have always had a great relationship to the women. women are tremendous.

>> reporter: the woman at the center of it all. >> you have called women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs. >> reporter: for the first time, her defending her treatment of trump. >> he felt attacked. it wasn't an attack. it was a fair question. but i get it. >> reporter: megyn kelly moving on. as the gop rivals, sensing an opening in the race, try to do the same. >> all the air in the balloon is going to donald trump right now. >> i don't really pay any attention to these other things. >> reporter: can trump sustain his surge? for the second time in a week, his campaign facing a shakeup. the billionaire businessman says he fired long-time top political adviser roger stone. stone claiming he fired trump. more evacuations in the west as new wildfires break out over the weekend. residents have been driven from as many as 1,000 homes in northern arizona. the flames swept through 6,000 acres since saturday. nearly a dozen structures were destroyed near the california border. more homes evacuated in

northern california after a new fire erupted yesterday afternoon near lake tahoe. it's burning north of the rocky fire, where 60,000 acres have already been scorched. this fire has not destroyed any homes so far. it's just zero percent contained. and drones continue to be a problem at one of the nation's busiest airports. one came close yesterday to four flights coming in from a landing at newark airport. two united flights, an express jet, and this northwest airline flight. >> 5837, we just saw the drone at 3,000. >> copy. you saw the drone. what altitude? >> 3,000 feet. it was probably about 400 off our left wing. >> attention all aircraft. use caution. drone activity reported. >> the four flights all landed safely. there were no injuries. there has been a significant increase in drone encounters. as the unmanned aircraft becomes more popular. an ex-con with a long history of violence has been charged with the murders of eight family members in houston.

police say david conley handcuffed the victims and shot each one in the head. killed were a husband and wife and six children, ranging in age from 6 to 13 years old. he had previously been arrested for attacking the woman, with whom he shared a child. that child among the victims. a football legend has died. frank gifford passed away yesterday from natural causes. he was a standout player in college. played offense and defense for the new york giants. often in the same game. he achieved real celebrity as the cornerstone of abc's "monday night football." beginning in the early 1970s. frank gifford would have celebrated his 85th birthday next sunday. still ahead. summer slide. the impressive streak for gas prices. plus, highway drama. a motorcycle and a police cruiser smashing into each other. the controversial collision all caught on camera. and a massive explosion. a house suddenly engulfed in flames.

talk about a dramatic explosion. this after a crash in michigan. a car was rear ended and struck the gas meter of that home. firefighters saw the damaged meter and rushed to get a young couple and their baby out of the house. it exloaded just moments later. destroying practically everything the family owned. they had just moved in. four other homes were damaged. remarkably, no one was injured. well, the toxic sludge spill from an abandoned gold mine in southern colorado is three times bigger than first reported. now estimated at 3 million gallons. colorado's governor declared a state of emergency. new mexico's governor is

criticizing the epa whose workers caused the spill many the river there, for waiting 24 hours to notify her state that the sludge was moving downstream. the navajo nation is planning to sue. towns along the river are trucking in clean water. and have suspended recreational boating. they are trying to determine the extent of the spill and risks. the summer slide continues at the pump with gasoline prices tumbling every day for three consecutive weeks. according to aaa, the national average for regular gasoline is now $2.59 a gallon, down 16 cents from a month ago. and about 88 cents lower than the price this time last year. the fantastic four have flopped at the box office with an anything but fantastic opening this weekend. "mission impossible: rogue nation" held onto the top spot for the second straight week, taking in $29 million. "fantastic four" opened with just over $26 million. and the new thriller, "the gift"

major headaches for drivers in arizona. crews are working to clear about 25 miles of route 89 after a mud slide blocked the road. workers are trying to remove debris and boulders. right now, it's unclear when that road will reopen. and another problem for drivers in the southwest this morning will be flooding in new mexico and colorado. roads will be wet in the northwest and florida and most of the east from the ohio valley to the atlantic coast. and if you're flying, airport delays are likeliest today in detroit and washington. well, we're learning new details about a deadly grizzly bear attack in yellow stone national park. >> the victim was a veteran hiker whose forearms had defensive wounds. investigators found partial tracks likely from an adult female bear and at least one cub. if the bear is trapped and linked to the attack, it will be euthanized. the victim has not yet been publicly identified. the families of two florida

teens missing at sea have now ended their private search. the boys, both 14 years old, went missing on a fishing trip july 24th. family members acknowledged that without new information, continuing the search wasn't practical. the coast guard ended its search after one week. the search costing $40,000 per day. two people and a dog had to be rescued after their boat caught fire about three miles off the coast of ocean city, new jersey. a good samaritan radioed for help while the three on board jumped on a dinghy stocked with life vests. the couple lived on that boat and lost everything when it sank. a tense landing at the airport in ft. lauderdale. a pilot of a small plane was forced to come in for a belly landing after a problem with his landing gear. as he landed, he jumped from the plane but wasn't hurt. fire crews and police officers were standing by to make sure he was safe. a dramatic confrontation on the road between bikers and the police in milwaukee. the bikers were riding in a

group when they say an officer ran one of them off the road. the squad car was seen weaving in and out of traffic in front of the motorcycles. police say the bikers were driving dangerously and the officer was trying to slow them down. no one was seriously injured. a frightening accident for two british tourists left dangling after their parasail line broke. the young brother and sister were up in the air when a freak storm blew through, snapping the rope holding them to the boat. finally, they came down in some bushes and only, luckily, minor scrapes and bruises. time for sports. >> and for last night's highlights, here are our guys at espn. >> alongside john buccigross, i'm john anderson. i'll do the baseball. >> i'll do the football. preseason football began sunday night in canton, ohio. the hall of fame game. of course, players inducted into the hall of fame, like jerome bettis. plenty of steeler fans to see his speech, they stuck around for the game.

this morning. not a good way to start monday. weather-wise we are convey it with live doppler hd with no wet weather to spoke of. here is the ferry building, the flags are unfurled so a stronger sea breeze. starting in the upper 50s to mid-60s. by noon, we are 76 inland to 82 by hurricane and back to 76 at 7:00. an the bay we will hit 66 at noon, 74 at 4:00, and 6 at 7:00 and we will hand in the mid-60s for the better part of the day along the coast where the clouds are more stubborn. >> we begin with breaking news this morning, a multialarm fire burning in san leandro. our reporter is near the scene. >> i will step out of the way right away so you can see what going on, the marina super market, marina boulevard in san leandro, the firefighters are actively spraying the fire right now. it looks like there were afe

businesses in here. we have the marina super market, a medical supply shot, a smoke shop, a coffee shop and a nail shop. firefighters say this is a four-alarm fire. we have video to show you of flames from early this morning. can see the fire was actively burning especially around the marina supermarket area. firefighters are still very much on the scene spraying this fire. there are at least half a dozen fire trucks i can see very much an active scene and we will check with officials here with much more throughout the morning. i want to minutes as we came in here circling an the neighbor, there are a lot of homes around here but not a lot of people outside. although this is very much an active sketch it is possible a lot of people are asleep. it is early in the morning and perhaps they do not realize a is going on.
