alphabet, a holding company like berkshire hathaway. co-founders larry page will be ceo and sergei brind will be president. >> google said that alphabet was a reference to the many different parts of their company, right? the other thing, also, they say it's an alphabet. it's the best that they can make. they see this as really the future of what google needs to be. >> reporter: longtime google executive becomes google ceo which will be one of several companies under alphabet. google will continue to focus on internet searches, mapping and youtube. as to who will lead the other company such as google car and google ventures, that has yet to be announced. tech analysts say while the news came as a surprise at first, it ultimately makes sense. >> a lot of people would argue google has gotten too big and by dividing it into separate companies with the old google being there as the biggest one makes it more entrepreneurial and less bureaucratic at least potentially. >> reporter: so far so good. the company's stock was up about 5% in after hours trading.

lilian kim, abc 7 news. another problem for san francisco. the "san francisco chronicle" is reporting does not have a valid driver's license all year. it was suspended in february after he failed to report a traffic accident last october. now under state law both drivers involved in an accident have to file a damage report with the department of motor vehicles if somebody's hurt or if the damage amounted to at least $750. the other driver reported the accident. his office says he is preparing a statement but has not yet responded. >> the trail is under way tonight. he was shot two years ago when a car full of teenagers pulled up alongside yanne melendez is live story. >> reporter: let me underline all of those teens involved in the case, total of six, were at

the time, two years ago, between the ages of 13 and 16 years old. i think everyone in that courtroom agrees today that on that day, again, two years ago, more than one life was lost. 34-year-old quinn boyer had just dropped off his father at his home in the oakland hills after taking him to a doctor's appointment. when boyer came up to a stop sign he was approached by a car full of teens. prosecutors say one of them got out of the car and shot boyer in the head. the car went off the road and into this ravine. boyer later died. his widow was the first to take the stand at the murder trial today. >> they don't know what they gave up when they decided to take this path. they have no idea what they gave up. >> reporter: burton, the alleged shooter, is being tried as an adult. his attorney maintains he did not kill boyer. >> we do believe that someone else was the shooter and i think the evidence will be quite

convincing in that area. >> reporter: the second teen being tried is david mcneill. >> there's a lack of evidence that mr. mcneill, my client, participated actively in the crime against quinn boyer. >> reporter: according to prosecutors, the teens had previously stolen a car and after the murder surveillance cameras show them dumping the vehicle at this school in oakland. three of the other teens pled guilty in juvenile court and are serving time. the fourth pled no contest and is doing 15 years in prison. >> i lost all my joy when i lost quinn. >> reporter: boyer's father held back tears when he testified today. >> looked forward to grandchildren. >> reporter: boyer was a paramedic in santa clara county. today co-workers and friend came to show their support for his family. in oakland, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. a suspect is now in custody in san jose. sky 7 hd flew over east san jose this afternoon where police arrested the man.

the incident happened capital expressway. police say the carjacker fired. they did not shoot back and nobody was hurt. just a few hours separated two shootings in which san jose police shot at armed suspects. a man died after officers shot him near east san antonio street last night. detectives say he was wanted in a stabbing. about six hours later a woman called police complaining her brother had returned home drunk and had a shotgun. officers confronted him on san marcos drive just after midnight. >> the suspect was outside of the residence with the shotgun. once he racked the shotgun, officers shot at the suspect. >> the man ran back inside the home and police believe he then shot and killed himself. >> a frightening scene involving a school bus full of kids. a multivehicle collision on busy interstate 80 this morning. none of the children onboard wearing seat belts.

reporter laura anthony is live where it happened in berkeley. laura, scary. >> reporter: it was, dan. california does have a seat belt law for school buses but it only applies to those buses built in the last ten years. the accident on this freeway this morning was older than that. the injuries were many but none too serious after a packed yellow school bus plowed into the back of a van setting off a chain reaction accident on busy interstate 80. the bus carried about 50 kids aged 5 to 15 headed to a park in oakland as part of their summer day camp experience. because the berkeley unified bus is more than 10 years old, none of the kids were wearing seat belts. >> the bus that was involved in the accident was not equipped with seat belts. and seat belts are not required on school buses. >> reporter: the chp reports 19 kids and adults and the bus driver suffered minor injuries.

mostly bloody noses and bumps and bruises. how are you doing? >> good. >> reporter: four other drivers in other cars were treated at area hospitals. >> we had 26 patients that were transported and additional around 17 that were not injured. >> reporter: a recent study by the national highway traffic safety administration found regardless of seat belts students are nearly eight times safer riding in a school bus than a car. california law requires only those buses built after july 1, 2005, be equipped with seat belts. in berkeley, laura anthony, abc 7 news. b.a.r.t. service came to a halt after a car crashed near the tracks. this is a vehicle after it crashed tlou the guardrail and then came to a stop below the b.a.r.t. straks. this video shows you the traffic the suv caused to the guardrail on interstate 680. b.a.r.t. powered down service to

inspect the tracks for damage and did not find any. it then resumed normal service. a woman injured on highway 101 in san jose has been arrested for drunk driving. they say carmen was under the influence of alcohol when her acura sedan slammed no a blue scion that had earlier hit a center divider. the driver of the scion died at the scene. investigators say three people including two 14-year-old boys were in the car when it happened. they suffered minor to moderate injuries. a warning tonight for residents in the city of alameda. police say to watch out for a man that we'd like to show you a picture of in a moment, and lock your doors and windows at night. there's the gentleman we're talking about. he's suspected in six break-ins between june 16 and august 9. the most recent incident police say the man cut a hole in a window screen and assaulted a young girl sleeping in the room.

cal fire is accusing accusations of failing to pay death benefits to the families of 14 air tanker pilots killed in the line of duty. an attorney for their families claimed state law requires a one time death benefit payment. they want $4 million plus interest. pilot hunt died last fall. hunt and other pilots worked for private firms hired by the state to fight fires. the sacramento bee is reporting they have not formally reviewed the claims filed by the families. and happening now, firefighters are afraid a new fire burning in lake county could meet up with the much larger rocky foyer a few miles away. the jerusalem fire broke out yesterday afternoon and that triggered mandatory evacuations and that included some who had just returned home. so far the jerusalem fire burned about 5,000 acres in 24 hours. investigators are working to find out what sparked that fire. >> meantime, cal fire officers arrested this man, silva, on

suspicion of arson. and allegedly starting a backfire. it is not the cause of the jerusalem or rocky fires. they believe he set it to protect some marijuana plants on his property. still ahead, a grocery store is in ruins. that's the sound of fire destroying the dreams of business owners in the east bay. the damage estimates soaring. that story coming up. plus, it looks like it's becoming a trend. the latest bay area company to give workers more time off to have a baby. >> a truly terrifying encounter with a typhoon. >> new standards for olive oil in california. we'll explain what they are. stay with us.

we hear these stories all the time. it's been happening a lot around the bay area. in san francisco tonight, some residents are battling a different kind of landlord, the city of san francisco. it's affecting people living who have to move perhaps to treasure island next door. carolyn tyler joins us. carolyn? >> reporter: well, cheryl, everybody knows san francisco has an affordability crisis. why they're being forced out to make room for what they say is a luxury development. about 100 people live here with affordable rent. now they're being told to leave the former navy housing because of longtime development plans to build a hotel and a ferry terminal. >> it's very, very frustrating.

>> reporter: a family of six has lived since 2002. and like everyone must get out next month. >> an understanding that this is temporary. >> reporter: but many residents don't want to move to treasure island concerned about crime, contaminated soil that the navy has spent millions cleaning up. another option, relocation packages to those who want to leave but many feel they should be allowed to return when the development is done. >> i feel they're moving us out of the city. anybody from the working class people. >> reporter: only a few of the new condos will be affordable. a supervisor considers treasure island's planned development

part of the package. >> we are building close to 28% on the island on both treasure island. >> reporter: some residents feel they can't fight city hall but others plan to sue. abc 7 news. firefighters had no trouble really with the blaze this afternoon in north san jose. east of highway 101. they found a pile of garbage and rubber on fire. it took only a few minutes to get the fire under control. the aftermath of a fire in san leandro. a supermarket is gone. a medical supply shop seriously damaged. damage is estimated at least a million dollars. this happened in marina boulevard. melanie woodrow has more. >> reporter: the four alarm fire breaking around 2:30 in the morning.

firefighters dousing those and part of the medical supply store. it doesn't feel like real life. >> firefighters saying other businesses in the strip mall likely have smoke damage. >> praying to god it hasn't affected my business. >> reporter: these firefighters are not taking any chances. the good news no injuries even with an explosion at the marina market shooting glass and debris into the street. >> it was something scary. >> reporter: then a water main break adding to the overnight chaos. some cars sinking. with this piece of old furniture curbside showing how high watt her been rising. at least one woman finding a use for the leftovers saying she plans to water her plants.

alameda county firefighters say they received some help this morning from hayward and oakland. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. add adobe to the list of companies giving more time off to new parents. the san jose based software company announced it will offer 26 weeks of paid time off for new moms and 16 weeks of paid time off for new dads. it will give 16 weeks of paid leave to employees who become parents via adoption, surrogacy or foster care. similar moves from netflix and microsoft last week. governor brown signed legislation today that removes the term alien from the california labor code. up until now any person not a citizen or national of the united states. introduced legislation to have it removed. the governor funded legislation setting new standards for labeling and grading of olive oil produced in california.

the word california cannot appear on the label unless the oil is made from olives grown exclusively in the state. a way to boost california's fledgling olive oil industry. a warning tonight between x ped yeah and orbitz will lead to higher prices. >> michael finney is here. there's a lot going on in this industry. you reported a very short time ago that xpedia completed its purchase of travelocity and consumer watchdog sees as shrinking competition in the travel industry. the california-based group now says a proposed merger between that expanded xpedia and orbitz would give 79% of the market. it says this would create control and limit consumer joys. they deny all of that and says its xcompetitors include price line, google, trip adviser and amazon.

here is what orbitz already opens. xpedia owns hotels, trip tickets, hotwire.com. the next gift card you get could be an e-gift card. been around for years but now they're really catching on. online gift card sales are increasing by nearly 30% a year. 97% offer online while only 3% of local retailers offer them. they do seem to be a favorite of last-minute shoppers. one out of every four gift cards sold in december are purchased between december 21 and 24. if you're a verizon wireless customer, big changes you need to know about. the company will no longer subsidize the cost of your smartphone. so if you buy a $600 phone, that's pretty much what you're going to pay, $600. people used to be able to get heavily subsidized phones if

moment for these drivers in taiwan getting caught in a tornado whipping around at 120 miles an hour. it was spawned by typhoon souldedor that has blasted the islands with 100-mile-an-hour wind and as much as 50 inches of rain causing dead ly landslides. at least 21 people have died and more than 100 people hurt. and check out this. isn't that weird? they were bent from a billboard falling on top of them during the typhoon. the cars are starting to melt. it was 98 degrees when a british tourist took these pictures as the cars start ed to drip. no kidding. no one could believe what they were seeing. bits were buckling and dropping to the ground. weird. >> wow.

members of the international space station crew have become the first gardeners in space and their harvest a crop of lettuce. scott kelly tweeted it was one small bite for man. one giant leap for nasa veggie and our journey to mars. kelly on the right with rest of the crew. red romaine lettuce they are calling. the international space station is thought the lettuce will repel radiation and lift a person's mood. the astronauts will eat half the harvest and froze and package the rest to bring back home to earth for scientific analysis. the experiment is part of a wider mission to create sustainable conditions for nasa's ongoing journey to mars mission. very cool. crews were still busy cleaning up.
