good evening. tonight in one of america's most popular and iconic national parks a murder mystery. the suspect is not a man but a bear. authorities believe they haveer

taken down one person and raised concern in yellowstone at the height of the tourist season. >> reporter: bear encounters captured on camera in yellowstone with alarming frequency this summer. >> last evening on the driver's side window and stuff had paw prints smeared across it. >> reporter: not with old faithful's regularity, but enough to put park visitors on high alert. >> i don't like all of the bear stories i've been hearing. >> reporter: this mother black bear caught charging tourists to protect her cubs. >> there is a bear on my car. oh, my gosh. >> reporter: this family in their car, terrifyingly close to a grizzly. an encounter turned deadly for lance crosby, an experienced worker who worked with the park urgent care clinics for past five seasons. the 63-year-old montana native was missing for a day and a half before his body was found by

authorities in a popular off-trail area. the grizzly bear is believed to have attacked because she was protecting her cubs. >> he had defensive wound on his forearms he was alive when he encountered the bear. >> reporter: authorities catching the aggressive animal believed for the attack and her cub. >> they did catch a female adult bear in the process of doing testing with the bear to make sure we have captured the right bear. >> reporter: if the tests confirm the bear is involved the bear will be euthanized along with her cub. there are fears if the cub survives it could learn the predatory behavior after watching the attack. somest ma estimate there are 80 grizzlies in yellowstone and 3.5 million visitors to the park every year. authorities say these attacks are rare. this is just the eighth bear related fatality in yellowstone in 100 years. but encounters seem on the rise. the summer months bringing large crowds and bears. not just in yellowstone.

>> you could feel it puncture deeply. you could feel the teeth. >> reporter: this man landed in the hospital after he was attacked by two blackberries on a deer hunting trip in alaska with his son-in-law. his son-in-law firing at the two bears, saving both of their lives. >> i see the two small cubs, maybe 30 pound apiece running up this slope. this mother bear who was closer to me comes running towards me. >> reporter: steven kritchbaum in george washington national park with his dog knows firsthand the ferocity and terror of a bear attack. >> she bit my thigh and knocked me to the ground. i'm on my back. and she is bite might legs. and i'm kicking like this. >> reporter: his dog spring to his aid. attacking the bear. allowing him to grab for a rick and fight back. he was fortunate as bears can grow as big as 7 feet and well

over 1,000 pounds. >> oh, there is a bear. a bear right across. >> on the history channel show "alone" these powerful animals have the seasoned outdoorsmen fearing for their lives. >> just found a bear. >> this is crazy. >> reporter: it centers around ten survivalists trying to jut last each other in remote wilderness of vancouver island. one competitor barely lasting through the first night. >> bear. >> reporter: another giving up after getting charged by ape bear. >> oh, [ bleep ]. >> hey, bear. >> i was just charged by a bear. . he just kept coming. i back add wed away into the wo. >> there was a bear den adjacent to my camp. >> reporter: the finale airs in two weeks. allen kay is one of four left battling in the wilderness. >> 100 yards away. >> reporter: he managed to survive in bear country for weeks. >> i didn't really feel any

direct threat. i don't think the bear did. i made it a pin the to make a little extra noise as i move around the island so they knew, here he comes. >> reporter: his strategy all about preparation. >> just really disciplined how i handled my food. don't eat where you sleep. just not something you do in predator country. >> reporter: some times encounters are unavoidable. >> i really think the key if you have a bear encounter. first prevention. make noise. don't be super still, watch your scent. be aware. >> reporter: to demonstrate what to do confronted by a bear in the wild. >> oh. >> does it hurt to have your head inside a bear's mouth? >> not really. >> reporter: they got up close and personal with a 1,300 pound grizzly. >> we have confidence in one another. >> reporter: this is the stunt bear bart, recognizable from "game of thrones." bart's trainer is doug sousse,

he says not all bears are created equal. >> grizzlies would be the biggest concern. >> reporter: but sousse says if you do happen to come in contact with a bear there are a few things you should do. talk slow. move slower. >> slowly back away, increase the distance between you and the bear. absolutely never run under any conditions. >> reporter: if a bear charges protect yourself. >> if a bear were ever to be on top of you. what you would do to protect one's vital spots. cover your face and neck like this. >> reporter: with a little bear spray you can hopefully avoid finding yourself in that position. bear spray is your last line of defense. this would be in your holster. >> pull the safety off. just like that. >> yes. >> this is why you >> the bear is charging towards you. you will give one quick spray.

i need. i am going to say, you can, but. then we massage the way that they can get their apartment and make it comfortable for them. >> be ready to bend a little. >> totally. and girl, i know how to make them bend. >> cut. >> reporter: compromise is a recurring theme with clients like randy and daniel. recent college graduates grapple with sticker shock. what do you want to have in your apartment? >> washer/dryer would be nice. >> also a nice living area, space, so we could put a sectional couch. get the 50, 60 inch tv on the wall. >> right. >> the guys are looking for amenities that aren't realistic for their budget of $3,000. i think they're used to their parents house that have great amenities. you are on a college budget or graduated you can't afford these types of things. >> reporter: the broker helped clients visualize potential. finding creative solutions for small spaces.

>> the master bedroom is that room right there. >> reporter: this is the living? >> right. >> okay. >> but it also can be. that's the master bedroom. waiting to see if you caught on. so this is a convertible two bedroom. >> ah. >> so you divide it right here. you have a huge living room area and a huge bedroom. >> because new york city rent is so high. people will save money by converting a one bedroom to a two bedroom. what they do is put up a wall and create their own room. not surprised randy and daniel are cool with putting up a wall. i'm sure i could convince them to use bunkbed. >> reporter: not just the clients of against the wall. being a broker in new york city comes with pressure to close deals fast. >> we make our entire income of based on commission. if we don't close the deal. we don't make money. i want to do something that will be comfortable, logical, affordable. the only reason the deal will close. otherwise i will lose them completely and end up with zero. >> no more [ bleep ].
