>> jimmy: welcome back. christina applegate, rick springfield, and music from tyler the create other way. there's a new dr. seuss book on sale, or i should say it's an old dr. seuss book that was newly discovered, called "what pet should i get?" a little boy and girl go to the pet store, try to figure out what pet they should get. spoiler alert, they wind up getting a monkey and the rips one of the boy's ears off. dr. seuss himself passed away in 1991. after eating bad green eggs, he died. the book is believed to have been written between 1958 and 1962, and because it was written a long time ago, we thought it would be a good idea to give it -- to freshen up and give it a bit of a modern spin. here with a selection from the new book "what pet should i get?" the one, the only, tyler the creator. tyler? [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: thank you for -- well, for telling us the story of "jesse's girl." that was the true story? >> that was the true story, as a matter of fact, yes. no, i met him in a stained glass class. i thought my music career was over in 1979. and i said, well, i'll take up stained glass, how hard could it be? >> jimmy: you wanted to do that for a living? >> yeah. >> jimmy: wow. >> it was a life choice. i met this guy, his name was gary. i tried that and it didn't really work so i changed it ""gary's girl" doesn't sound good. >> randy's girl. it's written on top and then crossed out. >> jimmy: the song would be a hit no matter what name, though i don't know if gary would have worked. gary would have been mad if you used gary's name. why jesse?

>> i was looking for a name that felt right. as a writer -- like christina. you know? >> jimmy: like christina. >> names that light up, i guess. gary didn't light it. sorry, any garys in the audience. >> jimmy: we do not allow them in the room. a few months ago you were involved in one of the strangest court cases i've ever heard. >> gasgate. >> jimmy: are you allowed to talk about that? >> i am, because we won. >> jimmy: congratulations. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: someone sued you? >> someone sued me. i go into the audience when i play, at some point i go into the audience. and i've been doing it 20 years. you bump into people, that kind of thing. this woman decided she was going to sue me for brain damage because i hit her with my butt. now, i work out but it's not

that hard. >> jimmy: it's not that hard, yeah. >> she follow med for ten years with this court case. went through five lawyers. they all realized it was ridiculous. and we eventually -- she got with a guy that, you know, took it to court. and so i'm sitting in a court of law. her attorney is going, mr. springfield, do you recognize these buttocks? a big photo of my butt she'd taken to show how close she was. >> jimmy: did you recognize them? >> i said, yes, i believe they're mine. exhibit b. and it became an exhibit. >> jimmy: wow. >> actually an exhibit. >> jimmy: do you have that? did you get to keep that? that would be a nice memento. >> i actually signed -- we auctioned it off for my friend linda blair runs a dog -- >> jimmy: that'sice. at least some tiny good came out of it. >> good came out of it. >> jimmy: has that made you less inclined to go out into the audience? >> no. because that was really the

whole point of going to the wall with it. i mean, people -- they're all going, why don't you throw money at her? and that's not what i wanted to do. that's not the kind of guy i am. >> jimmy: i don't blame you. i think you did absolutely the right thing. they thought, he's not going to want to spend time on this, he'll give us $25,000. instead, you gave them your ass. >> i did. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: you've been on the show a couple of times. i feel like, there are certain artists that come here and they have fans and, you know, whatever. but your fans seem to be a little extra crazed. i think you made some kind of an impact on a group of women at a certain time -- >> when the window was open. >> jimmy: yeah, the window, it was a big stained glass windows and they were wide open. do you have problems with this sort of thing? what's the craziest experience you've had with one of these characters? >> well, i mean, a lot of crazy stuff happened in the '80s when everybody was still pretty young, you know. i was in a jacuzzi at a hotel once. and this woman was in the

jacuzzi with me -- >> jimmy: i like it already. >> not the usual fan. >> jimmy: oh. >> why are these people looking at you? i said i'm an actor and singer. she goes, really? totally played like she didn't know who i was. eventually she said, i'm an heiress to the marriott chain, hotel chain, would you like free hotel rooms? i went -- okay. sounds good. so she got -- ended up coming on the bus with us to the whole tour. and getting us free hotel rooms. at marriott hotels. and we thought, wow, this is great. and then when the tour was over the fbi came looking for her for all the bad checks she dropped to pay for all the hotels. she wasn't -- she was a stones fan and stalked this whole thing out. >> jimmy: wow. >> she was with us like three months dropping these checks. i went looking for her after the tour. i wanted her to work for me. >> jimmy: yeah, sure. resourceful. you're in this movie with meryl streep, which had to be i'm sure -- when you got that telephone call it was probably

very exciting. >> who is this? >> jimmy: i mean, really. it doesn't get any better than that. >> yeah. >> jimmy: so you get in there, you're acting with meryl streep. she plays a rock musician, you play a rock musician. is this the most intimidating situation you've ever been in? >> yeah. definitely. i mean, she's the top of the food chain, you know. i likened it to being in a band with paul mccartney. it was pretty intimidating. and i'm not the only one that's felt that. i've heard from other actors. >> jimmy: i'm sure, yeah. >> i mean, you know. i got to bring my a-game. that was really the only thought. once you walk into the room and you see her, you know -- my first audition was to be in a -- i had a house in hollywood hills, had a band set up, meryl was there with the guitar. i walk in. just seeing her, it was a ahh moment. she's very gracious. she's aware of that effect. as an actor knows you've got to get past that to get to a truthful performance. she works at getting rid of that. you know, she's a really lovely

person. as well as being a giant talent. >> jimmy: she's playing the guitar? >> it's intense, it's intense. playing the guitar -- playing the electric guitar is a whole other thing than banging on the acoustic. a whole other set of tools. she not only does that, she sings at the same time. i know professional musicians who have trouble singing and playing. >> right. >> and jonathan demi, our incredible director, wanted it all live. he didn't want to do any overdubs. most of the music you see are lip synching. >> jimmy: and it's never right. >> even if you don't know what they're doing you kind of go, hm. you go the rca dog head tilt. so jonathan had not only amazing movies, he also did "stop making sense" and documentaries on neil young. he knew what a live performance should look like. >> jimmy: right. yeah. >> so this was one of the reasons i got the gig was he wanted a real guitar player.

a lot of actors play guitar, not an unusual thing. but it was -- it was a little intense. especially when they said, after the end of the shoot, i'm waiting for the call, let's fix a few things, this was nothing. and i'm, guys, don't you want to overdub it? i've done live stuff before and there's a couple of things that make you -- i saw the movie and i'm really, really happy with it. >> jimmy: i have to say -- >> she kills it. >> jimmy: when i saw the poster i was happy for you. it's weird that she plays ricki.
