the jerusalem fire has reached all the way east to napa and yolo counties. the area is near the southern tip of the much larger rocky fire. it is now 14,000 acres and just 5% contained. at least 60 structures are threatened with more than 1,600 firefighters working to contain it. >> two alameda county sheriff's deputies are recovering this morning after an explosion at a home where they found a body. deputies were serving an eviction notice in west oakland yesterday morning when the house just exploded. and this is youtube video showing the intense flames. investigators traced the blast to natural gas. deputies eventually entered the home and discovered the body of a 45-year-old man. they also found signs of booby traps. investigators have not ruled out the possibility the explosion was intentional. the deputies were not seriously hurt. family, friends, and supporters of a man who died in the jail will hold a rally and vigil in downtown oakland.

jail guards allegedly ignored screams for help from nearby inmates and did not call for emergency medical support. martinez died that day. his death has now triggered a call for justice. the rally and vigil begin at 7:00 tonight near lake side drive and lake merit boulevard. >> a sexually violent predator in the east bay could be a free man as soon as friday. a judge is set to rule whether he will be released. he's at the hospital after a probation violation stemming from an interaction with an 18-year-old. he was placed in a walnut creek neighborhood earlier this year, prompting many objections from residents there. three carjacking suspects are off the streets in san jose. a perimeter monday near east ridge mall where police spotted the suspects. they were connected to a carjacking six miles away near the blossom hill station.

as officers moved in, the suspects tried to carjack two more drivers, but they were not successful. the suspects fired shots as they ran. ran. no one was hurt. tappealing a court order. ellen pao is appealing an order to pay more than a quarter million dollars in attorney fees to her former employer, kleiner perkins. pao has sued the firm claiming it denied her promotions because of her gender. she lost the trial but sparked a diversity debate. pao recently resigned as ceo of reddit. republican presidential hopeful jeb bush is scheduled to return to the bay area. he will attend a fundraiser in san francisco. tickets cost $2,700. this is the former florida governor's second stop here in the bay area in a month. the smart train may lose its funding. a u.s. senate committee

drastically cut a program. officials are still hopeful that some deal can be reached. in 2008, voters approved a sales tack with the promise the train would run from clover dale to larksburg, where riders could catch a ferry into san francisco. now back to that search for a woman who may have jumped off the bay bridge into the waters below. abc 7 news reporter janet oh is live near the scene with the very latest for us. janet? >> reporter: you can see the coast guard out there on their boats with the flashing lights. they are following up on reports of a woman who may have gotten out of the water and seen on shore, but that is unconfirmed at this time. the search still continues this morning at this hour. several agencies are also on boats searching the san

francisco waterfront. it started out as a single car crash at 2:00 this morning. there are two people in that car. when they approached them, they say one woman believed to be the driver jumped over the guardrail and plunged 70 feet into the frigid water. >> we believe it's a diver that jumped over the rails. jumped over the rails. about 50 yards >> another passenger witnessed everything and fainted when she saw her friend jump. officials are not sure what prompted the driver to jump into the water. they're not sure what caused the single car crash early this morning. that is all under investigation. reporting live in oakland, janet reporting live in oakland, janet oh, abc 7 news. a water main break sent gallons of water rushing into

the street. can't get that video up right now, but we should tell you that during this drug ththat was a r tough situation. at least one garage has been flooded. more than two dozen people are without water. the city of oakland has not presented a viable plan to keep the raiders in oakland. yesterday, team owners met in yesterday, team owners met in chicago to listen former niners executive is leading that effort and claims the raiders and chargers are committed to moving. >> it works for california, and it certainly works for the l.a. market and now it works for the two teams that are playing in the most dilapidated and terrible stadiums in the league. the raiders and chargers are committed to l.a. and they spent a lot of money, a lot of money. >> no decision was made at the owner's meeting. the next round of owners

terminal once again. we will bring you that information. >> we also have breaking news here in the bay area. thank you for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. that breaking news, underneath the bay bridge. search crews researching for a woman who reportedly jumped off the bridge into the water. >> janet oh is there with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, kristen. the challenge really was that it was dark and hard to see, but now that it's light out, officials are hoping to find this woman who jumped from the bay bridge three and a half hours ago. you can see the coast guard is there right behind us, still searching, actively searching. i want to show you real quickly, just in the last half-hour, we saw chp arrive here over to the left of us and they have been searching around this building area for whatever reason. they won't tell us why. now, let's show you that video that we shot earlier this morning. the coast guard flying above and

have been searching all morning from the air. the woman was seen getting out of the water. a witness got back into the water. all of this confusing at this point. chp says this started out as a single car crash on the eastern span of the bay bridge at 2:00 this morning. three people were in that car when officers approached them near the crash site. they say the driver, for whatever reason, jumped over the guardrail and plunged 70 feet below into the san francisco bay, prompting this widespread search. >> the officer deployed off the coast of the bay. >> reporter: tiburon and oakland fire are also part of the ongoing search efforts. they are looking near the san francisco waterfront.

the concern is the woman suffering from hypothermia. this is still a search effort and not a recovery mission. they believe the woman may still be alive. they say the jump itself was survivable. they are still investigating what caused that early morning crash on the bay bridge. reporting live in oakland, janet oh, abc 7 news. >> we want to see how things are going traffic-wise to do that situation. i will have that in just a moment. but first, i'm showing you behind it. you can't really see it. we just passed some fire crews that are just off of the side of the freeway. we do have one lane currently blocked. this is eastbound side of highway 84. that's where we had a field fire that was burning. everything's under control. we still have one lane blocked between willow road and university avenue. let's go to other parts of the bay area. that is a look towards the eastern span of the bay bridge. traffic unaffected. all the slowing is in the westbound direction. moving over to the richmond san

call a hard landing in japan. the chopper went down near a ship in okinawa. it is badly damaged. no word on what caused the hard landing or the extent of the injuries. a seven-hour standoff is finally over. it's not clear how the suspect was taken into custody, but an arrest was made just a few hours ago at a home in delmonte avenue. it all started around 5:00 yesterday when authorities went to check on a report that a wanted felon was inside a house there. nearby homes were evacuated. police are not saying if the suspect was armed. but they are still looking for a second person in connection with the standoff. developing news. new mandatory evacuations in lake county as two large fires have nearly converged. it tore through the dry brush in lake county yesterday. it has grown to 14,000 acres and is only 5% contained. more than 1,600 firefighters are on scene, and at least 50

structures are threatened. many residents have been ready to go in a moment's notice. >> we've been bulldozing dark patches. and we love living here. it can be very frightening. it can be very stressful. >> the fire appears to be moving east. firefighters said many more homes would be in danger if it shifts back to the west. >> happening now, bay area kids are starting a new school year while their districts are scrambling the high more teachers. abc 7 news reporter matt kellar is live in san jose with thousands of kids returning to school this morning. it's a bay area wide problem, really. >> yes, bay area wide problem. also a california problem. classes start for the largest school district in all of silicon valley, san jose unified. but the biggest challenge is trying to get enough teachers inside those classrooms. san jose unified spokesperson says they're still looking to fill 12 open teaching positions.

this happened in most california districts as a result of years of layoffs during the recession years. and now requirements from the baby boomer generation. and to make things worse, the number of those entering teacher preparation programs in california dropped by more than 55% from 2008 through 2012. school districts are being a lot more aggressive now recruiting teachers. >> going to the candidate as opposed to the candidate coming to us. we did a lot of regional job fairs going to the regional campuses. and we were very aggressive about finding those top quality candidates. >> the average teacher makes about $75,000 a year in salary and another $25,000 in benefits. but with the increased cost of living in the bay area, especially housing, it can be tough recruiting teachers to stay in the area p it's a shortage officials say will take years to meet the demand, especially for math and science. reporting live in san jose, matt
