by protesters. this video shows the store near 12th and clay streets. front window is smashed. glass is all over the ground there. the protests stemmed from a fatal police shooting that took place earlier in the day. abc explains how the tense situation played out on oakland streets. >> reporter: oakland polic chased the armed robbery suspect from of t69th after and international boulevard to this intersection at 27th and mlk. police say the driver crashed into a car, jumped out and ran while carrying this loaded handgun. he tried to car jack a vehicle, then ran off before three officers opened fire on him. police say he did not fire his weapon at them. >> a 9 millimeter handgun was reported stolen. it was found next to him at the scene. >> reporter: at least one officer used a tourniquet like this to help the wounded suspect who died at the hospital. >> after the suspect was shot, they immediately activated this

kit. this kit is to help with gunshot wounds. officers did activate this kit prior to medical person until responding and transporting the suspect to a local hospital. >> reporter: lolita drake says it happened right in front of her social club and many of her senior citizen friends were stuck inside. >> i would have been scared because i could have been out there, too. >> reporter: police say the dud suspect is a 24-year-old man from oakland whose vehicle is connected to a july 27th armed robbery. all three officers who shot him were wearing body cameras that were activated. this is the department's third officer-involved shooting of the year that's ended in the death of a suspect. in oakland, alan wong, abc 7 news. happening now -- work is under way on the first of three express lane segments that will express lane segments that will eventually run

>> reporter: traffic is obviously a big issue for people here in the bay area. the hope is these express lanes on 680 will make your morning and evening commutes a little bit faster. according to our media partner, the "contra costa times," construction was scheduled to begin overnight. you see these types of express lanes in the bay area, they'll eventually go both directions. workers will be preparing the highway for the installation of fiber-optic cables bringing information to the overhead signs, alerting drivers to the tolls. car poolers, motorcyclists and certain clean air vehicles can use the hov lanes now. they will still be able to use express lanes for free but according to the newspaper, by 2016, solo drivers will be able to pay to drive in those lanes. the price depends on how much traffic there is. more traffic, the more you'll pay. this will be done using fastrack. they'll be given cards to

indicate how many people are in their car. they estimate drivers will save five to ten minutes, on average, during their commute. construction will take place during weekdays from 8:00 at 9:00 until 5:00 in the morning. matt keller, abc 7 news. 4:33 now. new this morning, isis is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack in baghdad. at least 62 people died overnight when a truck bomb was detonated in the city's largest market. police say another 125 were wounded. officials say that market is especially crowded on thursdays as people stock up on food for the weekend. the death toll following a massive explosion at a warehouse in tianjin china remains at 34. smoke is still billowing from the warehouse which officials say was used to store dangerous chemical materials. blast and heat were so intense they destroyed office buildings and bloo you out windows at a nearby apartment complex. the explosion also melted roads

and new cars in a nearby parking lot. officials say those cars are still too hot to touch this morning. no word what triggered the blast. the exposure produced so much heat you could detect it from space. that orange dot there is the blast. this infrared image was seen by a japanese weather satellite over the blast site. back here, more than 2,000 firefighters are battling the jerusalem fire burning in lake county. cal fire says it remains active and firefighters are working aggressively to keep it from spreading. right now it stands at 20,500 acres and it is 16% contained. the good news is it seems to be burning away from homes. the fire has already moved up to the edge of areas already blackened by the rocky fire. that massive fire is 95% contained after charring nearly 70,000 acres. alameda police are trying to determine if a teen arrested for sexually assaulting a young girl also committed up to a dozen home burglaries. the 17-year-old turned himself in to police after investigators

released these surveillance photos. investigators have already tied him to five robberies in alameda's west end, all of which involved female victims. in a most recent attack on sunday, police say a prowler sexually assaulted a young girl sleeping in her bedroom. police are looking for a drone that forced a medical helicopter carrying a patient to take evasive action. the pilot had to make a sudden turn to avoid the unmanned aircraft yesterday afternoon just north of the fresno yosemite international airport. the chopper was hospiteaded to hospital with the patient. the drone missed the rotor barely flying a dangerous 20 feet beneath the blade. the helicopter made it safely to the hospital. the faa says encounters between drones and aircraft near airports are an increasing problem. ready, set -- shop! this morning, the biggest outlet mall in the state is opening a slew of new stores in livermore. at least 30 new shops open this morning at 10:00, including carolina herrera, jimmy chu and

outside an apartment building on the corner of stockton and lombard streets last night. the owner is a prominent alzheimer's researcher at uc irvine. he inherited the building and n invoked the ellis act to evict tenants. the tenants began fighting evictions but now just two remain. >> it is a very close-knit community that is being destroyed. it's worth fighting for. my home is worth zb >> if both sides don't reach an agreement, a lawsuit is set to go to trial next week. is uber break being the law by allowing its users to rent or lease the cars they use? did the 2013 law that legalized the car booking service require drivers to own their vehicles? the outcome is crucial to uber's new low-cost ride service called uber x. the company announced some of the uber x drivers will be leasing or renting a car because

your forecast and traffic coming up. the city of los angeles has literally black balled a reservoir to help save water. check it out. officials just dumped the last of 96 million plastic balls into the los angeles reservoir. they are called shave balls and they float on the surface block being the sun's rays. officials say they can prevent up to 300 million gallons of water from evaporating each year. the balls are part of a $35 million initiative to protect l.a.'s water supply during the drought. in antioch officials are considering increasing the water supply with a desalination system. it will explore the usefulness of water pumped from the san e joaquin river. eligible homeowners can get a $500 discounted package with drought resistant plans and landscape materials. california will soon have the toughest showerhead

requirements in the nation. starting next july the flow from new showerheads and bathroom faucets sold in stores will be capped at 2 gallons a minute down from a half gallon from the current standard. reduced again in 2018 to 1.8 gallons a minute. the state has also announced a $30 million rebate program to replace old toilets. homeowners will be paid for cleanup and repairs after a water main break in alamo. the water break sent thousands it of gallons of water gushing down the street and into homes and backyards. four homes were flooded. it was so bad in some areas, one guy's pet pig, rose -- that is the pig's name -- ran inside to seek higher ground on a couch. >> yeah, she can swim a little bit, thank god. i knew she could handle herself. >> officials say it was caused by a ten-inch cast iron pipe

one lane just reopened after a crash that occurred around 4:20 this morning. we have heavy delays northbound of 880 near highway 37. this accident causing a jam this early morning. if you're traveling on to 37, it is looking clear but for the next few minutes your transition to 101 is going to be closed. drive time traffic, 680, highway 24, everything looks clear with the exception of 580. that's the busy spot. 4:56. researchers are trying to figure out why guy beavers are dying in martinez creek. 3 of 4 baby beavers born this year now have unexpectedly died. officials say a fourth dead beaver was spotted floating in the water this week. scientists say they didn't find anything unusual after examining the body of one of the beavers last month. veterinarians have ruled out the drought and algae and related toxins. five beavers currently live in the creek. an armed robbery in new mexico ended with a victim

taking matters into his own hands. now the victim faces charges. look at the top of your screen. you see a black car run down two teens on the street. right there. the teens are okay, thankfully. but police say minutes before they robbed the driver in a nearby park, the two teens were eventually arrested along with two others for the robbery and the driver is also facing charges for returning down the suspects intentionally. the scene of a murder in san francisco's pier 14. new at 5:00, the suspect police have in custody and the others still on the run. also, colin kaepernick has he said but he does have a problem with one of his teammates. a look at east bay toward the eastern span of the do you like the passaaadd? it's a good looking car. this is the model rear end event. the model year end sales event.
