lanes. that's kicking up gravel as cars drive over it. just watch out for cracked windshields. as i move over to westbound traffic, looks a little bit heavier. still, moving along. let's take another look at this drive. this is the macarthur it is light and clear. 680 starting to build a bit breaking news in oakland. 15-20 people are displaced following a building fire near 8th avenue and international boulevard. it broke out around 2:30 this morning and spread to a nearby neighboring fuel plex. crews knocked down the flames wp an hour. several departments and businesses including a beauty salon you saw on this video were destroyed. red cross is on the scene helping the victim. >> union city police have a warning for people to take better notice of their surroundings after a recent string of robberies where people had jewelry snatched right off their necks. abc 7 news reporters, matt keller, is live at union city police headquarters. matt? >> this is obviously a

disturbing crime trend making people nervous heading out to the park. series of attacks have taken place in fremont and union city. the latest happened last friday. a daylight robbery at con tempo park in union city. a popular place for families. >> onlookers tried to stop a person trying to rip a gold neck as off a woman's neck at the playground. >> he said, leave her alone. he pointed guns towards her. they say, call 911. >> they say the robber ran through the bushes with the getaway car. it was described as gray or silver. the juvenile was eventually arrested. it is just one of half a dozen robberies that have taken place in the area recently, all involving necklace snatching. on wednesday, a man pulled a

handgun on three people in an apartment complex on leslie street in fremont and made off with gold necklaces. police are warning residents to be aware of their surroundings and some are saying they are not going to wear their jewelry out in public. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news reporters upset over a fatal shooting plan to hit the streets again tonight. at issue, whether or not three officers were justified in using deadly force against a 24-year-old armed robbery suspect wednesday. the department released autopsy results showing bullet wounds in the front of the oakland man's body, indicating he was not shot in the back as some claim. >> this gentleman went on a rampage. he robbed citizens, tried to car zach people, running around armed on a major thoroughfare in oakland. what are we supposed to do here? >> there are questions about, was that the only option that they have and why the disparity? when white folks shoot a cop,

they get taken in alive. when black folks have a gun or there is a gun on their seat, they end up dead. >> have the officers were wearing body cameras. the video has not been released. tonight as protest is slated for 6:00 at 27th and telegraph. major libby shah told abc 7 that vandalism will not be tolerated. >> a $15,000 reward for interesting leading to arrest for a man shot inside his oakland apartment. our media partner reports the man was the victim of an apparent burglary on champion street. his body was found yesterday morning after a neighbor became concerned about not having seen him and called for help. >> a contra kosta county sheriff's deputy is being hailed a hero after he lost his life in lake tahoe. the deputy jumped into deep lake water to save a person that was apparently drowning yesterday.

he is survived by his wife and three siblings. two of his siblings also work in law enforcement. he coached youth football. the sheriff is praising him for protecting the lives of others. the sheriff department has sent him to lake tahoe. more on the story coming up at 6:30. right now, 6:05. police have identified the woman who jumped or fell off the bay bridge and swam away. irwin sanchez edwards of richmond is still on the run. police say she was driving a stolen car when she hit a guardrail early wednesday morning. they say she slipped off the side of the bay bridge when officers approached. a truck driver reported picking up a soaking wet woman near the toll plaza and dropping her off in the east bay. >> in the south bay, a woman is in jail accused of using a hammer to kill her mother. sunny veil police arrested lindy smith yesterday. abc 7 news was at the plaza delray mobile home park as detectives taped off the crime scene. they say the mother and daughter lived together. an argument may have led to the

killing. this is sunnyvale's first homicide this year tennants of a building destroyed by a massive fire are now suing the building's owners. one person died. month are than 50 lost homes and businesses at the corner of 22nd and mission in the january 28th fire. the san francisco fire department determined it was likely caused by an electrical fault or failure. the attorney representing 47 displaced tenants as emotional distress is at the heart of the civil lawsuit filed on wednesday. >> issues with the electrical plumbing, heating system flute. liu would do shoddy type of repairs and wouldn't take out permits. >> the fire escape was i couldn't open it. we both started panicking. >> it would be a year before it is resolved this man is back in jail

after arson charges. police arrested david laughlin after getting a tip from witnesses. they believe he set at least five separate fires starting wednesday night. they arrested him following a suspicious fire a redwood city renter is being forced out of the apartment building. 3 1/2 months to find new places to live. several remaining families at 910 clinton street that will live rent-free before they move out. >> former giants slugger, barry bonds, says he feels a sense of relief after federal prosecutors decided to end their criminal case against the home run king. he spoke to the assisted press at at&t park in his first interview since the announcement last month. no question he deserves to be a hall-of-famer. he realizes his legal victory doesn't assure him a spot in cooperstown. they have charged bonds with ab struction of justice while investigating the steroid case

officials at an ohio amusement park are trying to figure how a man gained access to a restricted area, a move that ultimately cost him his life. a 45-year-old man was hit and killed by a roller coaster while in that restricted area yesterday at cedar point. police say he was trying to retrieve his cell phone which had fallin out during his ride on the raptor. the ride reaches a maximum speed of 57 miles per hour according to the parks website. good morning america will have more on this accident coming up at 7:00 a.m. robin williams suicide has had an unprecedented on impact onement tall health. he died a year ago this tuesday. the national suicide prevention

hotline received three times the normal number of calls according to news week. the number of calls has continued at that high level which could mean more people are at risk. it also could mean for people that are asking for help and knowing where to find it. >> a san mateo woman who posted a viral video of her body's transformation during a year of cancer treatment has passed away. 52-year-old jennifer glass was an advocate for california to change their laws and let terminally ill patients obtain life-ending drugs from their doctors legally. her husband posted that she died peacefully in their home tuesday evening from lung cancer holding his hand with her beloved cat at her side. >> this may sound crazy. it is true. flame throwers are on sale to the public. they can shoot fire 50 feet. the company is marketing the flame throwers, not as weapons but as fun tools. they will sell for about $1600

good friday morning. 6:23 is our time. let's take a live look outside the san mateo bridge. traffic is moving along pretty well for this hour heading westbound. some clouds over us. a warm day. we'll check in with mike and leyla in just a minute. >> a man is facing charges after san francisco police say he ordered his dogs to attack a person who was trying to break up a domestic dispute at oak and fillmore streets around 7:30. the good samaritan stepped in when a man and woman began fighting. two people were bitten. the injuries are not considered serious. police have seized the dogs. the civil lawsuit brought by a disabled oakland high student beaten up by a campus security guard will cost the city $550,000. the school board approved the amount to settle the lawsuit. surveillance video shows former security guard, march shell mitchell, slapping francisco martinez.

vacaville, unaffected. >> back to breaking news we are following in oakland this morning. fire crews still on the scene of a three-alarm fire that chased dozens out of their homes this morning. they broke out near eighth avenue and international boulevard around 2:30 a.m. and has spread to two buildings. several departments and businesses have been destroyed. the red cross is helping 15-20 find a in you place to stay. >> the contra county sheriff's department is mourning the loss of a colleague this morning. a sheriff's deputy died trying to save somebody from drowning in lake tahoe. alan walton is live with what we are learning new about this deputy. >> we are still learning more about this. what we do know is that deputy carlos francy worked at the jail here in martinez. this morning, many of his colleagues are finding out about his death. to his friends and family, he was known as diamond. a talented athlete that played football for san francisco state and the stockton arena football

team before joining the sheriff's department. he died in south lake tahoe yesterday afternoon. authorities say he jumped into lake tahoe to save a person who was apparently drowning. he got into some trouble and then ended up drowning himself. it is still unclear if the person he was trying to save survived that incident. we're teeold he lived in sacramento and coached youth football. david livingston said he is a hero and an example of what is right in law enforcement today. we mourn with his family, friends and colleagues. he is survived by his wife and two sisters who work in law enforcement. he also has a brother named coy francis who recently retired from the oakland raiders. i'm alan wong, abc 7 news. >> alan, thanks a lot. 6:32 now. more protests planned tonight in oakland in response to the deadly shooting involving three police officers. at issue, whether or not the officers were justified in using

deadly force against a 24-year-old armed robbery suspect on wednesday. the department released autopsy results showing bullet wounds in the front of the man's body indicating he was not shot in the back as some claim. and, body camera footage, allegedly showed the suspect pointed a gun at the os certificates. in the meantime, mayor libby shaft told abc news that while she respects the right to protest, vandalism will not be protested. >> more than 2100 firefighters battling the jerusalem fire. it has grown to 2500 acres with containment at 50%. the cal fire says the jerusalem fire will run out of fuel by the time it reaches the rocky fire zone. man da torre evacuations are still in place. officials expect to have the flames fully contained by monday. happening today, a contra

costa judge is set to decide if a predator will be brought to the east bay. he allegedly violated conditions he allegedly violated conditions of his release in liberal health care, which tracks the release of the sexually violent predators, testified that he he recently made contact with an 18-year-old man and didn't tell his case worker. he moved to a walnut creek area which prompted many objections from residents. we are learning more about the death of a young kidnapping victim. they said she was stabbed in the neck and strangled. she vanished on july 26th. police found her body inside a recycling bin at the complex. they say a 15-year-old neighbor sexually assaulted her before killing her. adrian gonzalez faces charges as adrian gonzalez faces charges as an adult. they are asking for the public's help in identifying a

man after they found a paddle board, a go procamera and a selfie stick. these photos were taken from the camera's memory card. he identified himself as moyim and paid in cash for the paddle board. he did not return. a water and shoreline search were conducted yesterday. so far, nobody has seen him or reported him missing the oakland unified school district is doing something almost unheard of ten days before classes begin. it is holding a recruitment fair. the district still needs 72 teachers to fill position for the first day of school. the teachers shortage is nationwide. the oakland situation is specially serious. officials say baby boomers are retiring and there has been a sharp drop in people entering teacher credentialing programs. substitute teachers are being pulled in to fill the gap. >> we may have to call people back to the classroom. we are going to make sure every

east bay congresswoman, barbara lee is going there as well. back in the bay area, a robbery spree in union city has police issuing a warning for everyone to be on the alert. >> police say one item in particular the thieves are going after. matt kell er is live at the headquarters to explain. >> reporter: people are scared. some said they are not going to wear jewelry out in public. these series of attacks, necklace snatchings have taken place in both free month and union city. the last one took place on friday night. it was at a popular park, con tempo park in union city. a young man tried to rip a gold necklace off a woman's neck. they tried to help and took off running down the street where a getaway car waited. she was eventually arrested. it is one of the half dozen snatching robberies that have taken place.

coast sunday and for the rest of us monday into tuesday. >> have a great weekend. we are heading southbound with mobile 360 on 880 as you travel right past highway 92 in hayward. traffic is light on 880. we have some problems on highway 92, i.e., the san mateo bridge. i'm going to move 360 around in the northbound direction. let's go over to the live shot. you can see how heavy the traffic is. that is because we have an accident right at the high-rise. a car versus two other vehicles. it is blocking at least one lane. traffic has been quite slow, indeed. that is tacking minutes to your commute. because it is at the high-rise, that's 9 miles into your commute as you head away from 880. basically, the entire stretch is going to be packed with cars. you might want to consider taking the dumbarton bridge. you can see 61 miles per hour as you head out of newark and east palo alto. a little volume on southbound 880 before you get there. 650.
