still happening at that site. we'll have the latest in a moment on the search for survivors. first, we want to get to those new reports about a godzilla el nino and serious flooding out west. ginger tracking it all. ginger? >> let's start in las vegas, winds knocking down power lines. thousands without power. and look at this. the flash flooding. half to 1 1/2 inches. southern nevada, that has moved on. the headline turns to heat. from phoenix back to burbank, it is going to be a very hot weekend. we're talking triple digits. godzilla el nino, that's not an actual term but someone who quoted. it's not going to be one monster storm coming at you. you know how dry we've been. it's going to shift the pattern. now we have the eastern pacific warming up. it takes the jet, pushes it right over southern california and this's what we're concerned with. a place so dry having a lot of rain late fall, early winter.

"your voice your vote." al gore making headlines this morning. a new report saying some of his supporters want the former vice president to consider a run. jon karl on martha's vineyard. where the president is vacationing. first, al gore trending on twitter for a time overnight. some advisers quietly talking about getting back in the race? >> reporter: some former gore advisers had preliminary discussions about a possible of another gore presidential campaign but the vice president is slamming the door shut on that this morning. his spokesman telling the daily tennesseean, he's not going to run. laserlike focus on the climate change. >> al gore saying a no-go this morning. how about joe biden,

recently losing his son who wanted h imto run. any word when we'll hear from the vice president? >> the current vice president is wrapping up a week-long vacation in south carolina. i'm told he has reached out to his supporters. talked about a run. decision from joe biden i'm told, the earliest it can come is in the early august. >> lastly, donald trump making headlines again, offering helicopter rides? >> yeah. he's going to the iowa state fair in the big trump helicopter tomorrow. he said he's going to offer free helicopter rides for kids but fair organizers saying that's not going to happen. >> jon karl live on martha's vineyard. the devastating explosion in china, rescues under way after a toxic store igniting. investigators still searching for a cause. bob woodruff is on the scene there in china. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there were two more small explosions just a short time ago right down here.

we still don't know exactly what triggered all of these horrific explosions. they did find one of the missing firefighters today, but there is a toxic smell in the air here and those chemicals are still burning. this is the newest video of what happened that day. the dash board camera capturing the explosions, no audio is recording. what they saw and what shook. those shadows up ahead are people scrambling to get far from the blast. this morning, rescue crews are out in force, shifting through that rubble, looking for survivors. early today, a victory, one of the dozens of firefighters that rushed in to douse the flames. this 19-year-old pulled from the twisted metal. more than 56 are dead, more than 700 wounded and dozens still missing. this morning, some fires still burning and moving in, more than 200 army personnel trained to deal with chemical and nuclear

catastrophes. experts he in hazmat suits testing the air, trying to figure out what caused this. american dan van duren shot this video as he was running for his life. >> let's go! >> reporter: clearly these were the ones at the center of the epicenter. he showed us where he was that night. he climbed to the roof with his girlfriend to watch the stars but his amazement soon turning to horror. >> it looked like a nuclear bomb going off in my face, and it felt like that. i mean, it blew us back. and the whole building shook. i thought we were going to die. >> reporter: now, interesting that the police today said the water to put out the fire could have mixed with calcium carbide in the warehouse. and that could create an extremely explosive gas. now they're worried when the rain comes, that could make this even worse in terms of the chemicals in the air. but, again, david, all of this is under investigation. >> bob, thank you. we turn now to the new developments in the shooting death of an unarmed south carolina teenager. police officer killing a 19-year-old at a fast-food parking lot while he was out on a date.

the victim's parents are speaking out this morning looking for answers and abc's steve osunsami is in atlanta with the latest. steve, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, david. the u.s. justice department is looking into this case at the family's request, launching a civil rights investigation. >> i would like to see the officer charged with murder. >> reporter: this morning, grief and anger from the hammond family in south carolina. they have seen the killings of unarmed black suspects across the country, but today it's their son. >> i mean, this is over a little bit of marijuana. you don't kill people over marijuana. >> reporter: he was shot to death during a drug sting in a hardee's parking lot. the bullets missing his passenger. >> we set up a perimeter. one of our officers involved in a shooting. >> reporter: police are blaming the unarmed young man saying he tried to run the police officer over with his car.

calling it attempted murder in this police report. attorneys for the police officer saying in a statement, if not for his quick reflexes and his ability to push off of the car, the officer would have been run over by mr. hammond. but an autopsy commissioned by the family shows that the 19-year-old's gunshot wounds entered the back of his shoulder and his side, not the front of his body. >> he murdered our son. >> he murdered our son. i don't understand. it doesn't matter whether he was doing something just really bad. you don't shoot people the way he shot my son. >> reporter: they believe the police may have dash cam video and if so, they would like it released. police aren't commenting. family tells us that we in this country take a close look at the use of police force against young people. they tell us they cry whenever they hear of these shootings. robin? >> all right, steve, thank you. now to a death at a popular ohio amusement park, a man hit and killed by a roller-coaster when he entered a restricted area to find belongings he lost on a ride. gio benitez has that story.

good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning. it peers that was a decision that cost him a life. at one of america's oldest and most renowned amusement parks. overnight, an ohio schoolteacher struck and killed by a speeding roller coaster. >> the city and police department's condolences go out to the family of this gentleman. >> reporter: according to police, james young entered the restrictor of this ride at cedar point park in sandusky, ohio, at around 5:00 p.m. thursday evening. >> that ride is really fast. that guy got knocked out. his skull got cracked. he was down there at least 20 minute, half hour. >> reporter: rescue squads responding to the scene, attempting to revive young, but they were unsuccessful. officials say the 45-year-old dropped personal belongings while riding the raptor with friends earlier that day. >> after completing the ride, mr. young decided to retrieve these items. he jumped over a fence into a restricted area. under the raptor. mr. young was struck by the raptor train that was in operation.

>> reporter: this video from cedar point's website shows the raptor under normal circumstances traveling nearly 60 miles per hour, one of the many thrilling rides at the park that brands itself the roller-coaster capital of the world. cedar point park issuing a statement saying, our thoughts and prayers are with the family. and we're told no one else was injured on that ride when young was killed. the roller coaster is shut down. the investigation is under way. and this morning, police are asking for more witnesses to come forward. >> gio thanks so much. we turn now to an historic moment this morning, the raising of the american flag over the u.s. embassy in cuba for the first time in more than 50 years, marking what many hope is the start of a it new relationship. jim avila is there in cuba where he learned of the news a few months back and now that day has come. >> reporter: david, good morning from havana, the americans are back, i'm standing atop the reopened u.s. embassy, where

york city, a man is reportedly barricaded inside of a basement in the neighborhood of staten island after opening fire on police and firefighters. officers say the man set the fire after u.s. marshals arrived to arrest him. he then fired those shots, allegedly injuring one firefighter. the injuries are not life threatening. we don't know yet why the man was arrested. police say a teenager who entered this country illegally from belize is under arrest now for what they call an extremely violent triple murder. ryan hyde is charged with killing his aunt, his pregnant cousin, and her boyfriend. family members say they can't think of any reason for this attack. in new jersey, cameras rolling when a school bus drove through this intersection hitting an suv before slamming into that liquor store. most of the 11 children and 2 adults on board suffered some sort of injuries. the the driver said the brakes failed. and a similar scene in miami. this time an ambulance colliding with a fire truck. look at that. both responding to emergency calls at the time. several fire fighters and the

patient in that ambulance had to be rescued. investigators are trying to find out who had the right of way at that time. and a big surprise overnight from the quarterback tom brady as he fights the toughest battle of his career in court. he shocked everyone last night taking the field during the patriots' preseason opener. check it out. >> beautiful night for football inside a happy gillette stadium. tom brady comes out for the first offensive series for the patriots. >> the hometown crowd going wild giving brady a standing ovation. he threw only four passes, completing only one of them. off the field, lawyers for the league and players union are discussing a possible settlement as brady appeals his deflategate suspension. the next court date coming up on wednesday. and finally, is this the worst business idea ever? for 10 bucks this guy in texas will write a message on a potato and send it to anyone in american. anonymously. sample messages include, paul, you're being evicted.

though in trash talking there are rules that no umpire should have to remind you. meet the new bad boy of tennis. australian nick kyrgios, currently ranked 41 in the world. he has mean serve and apparently a mean streak. wednesday night he caused jaws to drop when mid-match he was caught on microphone trash-talking his opponent stan wawrinka. using inappropriate language to suggest wawrinka's tennis player girlfriend had been unfaithful with another tennis player. the crowd responded to the unsportsmanlike conduct with boos. it's hardly the first time a tennis player has behaved badly on the court. >> you cannot be serious. that ball was on the line. how can you possibly call that out. >> reporter: in the 1980s john mcenroe routinely lashed out at tennis officials. and in more recent years, serena williams and novak djokovic had been known for their short tempers.

opening up to robin for the first time since a judge ordered her kids be sent back to monaco to live with their father even though they're u.s. citizens. and we have another abc news exclusive for you right now. parents of kevin ward, jr., speaking about his death. ward was killed by nascar star tony stewart during a race last year. paula faris sat down with the wards who hold stewart responsible for their son's death. good morning. paula. >> good morning, robin. the family breaking their silence for the first time since their son's death. recalling his big heart and the big dreams that he had. kevin ward jr. will never race again and his family believes that tony stewart should face the same punishment. to many people tony stewart is one of racing's great. to pam and kevin ward, tony stewart is the man who killed their only son. >> what do you ultimately want

there's no amount of money that with bring your son back. >> we want justice for their son. >> reporter: just one year ago, ward went to a track in upstate new york to race and never made it out alive. he was a great kid. >> he had a huge heart. >> reporter: ward's dad gets emotional when he recalls his son was 10, he asked if he could help a fellow, less fortunate competitor. >> he come over to me and said dad, can i have the new tires? i said, why do you want the new tires? and he told me that the young lad that got second could have beat me if he had new tires. that was pretty hard. >> reporter: on august 9th 2014, ward was racing when his car was hit by stewart's sending ward's into the wall. ward got out of his car apparently to confront stewart and then stewart fatally hits him. >> oh, he hit him! >> i wish he would not have

gotten out of the car, more than anybody. but i also acknowledge the fact that if tony would have stayed low on the track and not have gunned his engine and headed for my son my son would still be here. >> reporter: afterward's death a grand jury decided not to file criminal charges against stewart. one of the facts that emerged was a toxicology report showing ward had trace amounts of marijuana in his system on that fatal night. >> i don't believe my son was impaired. >> reporter: the family now filing a civil suit against stewart. we want him accountable. the civil suit is the only action we have left. >> reporter: you feel like tony stewart killed your son and got away with it. >> yes, most definitely. tony races every weekend. i know my son will never get to race again. >> reporter: according to the lawsuit, the family alleges that tony acted recklessly. purposely gunning the engine. while under a caution. >> you can hear the acceleration in the tape and it's tony's car accelerating. >> oh, he hit him!

>> you can see he slides his car sideways and hits my son and kills him. >> there's no doubt. he knew what he was doing and it was tony's car that revved that motor. >> you don't think he was trying to kill him, you think he was trying to intimidate him. >> i don't think he tried to kill my son but his actions. killed my son. >> what do you want tony to know? >> he took a big part of my family. >> and we reached out to stewart's camp. they have no comment at the time. tony stewart, however, has always maintained that he did not rev his engine. he did not go afterward jr. but this civil suit, ward's legal team strongly believes that there's new ed that will tell a different story. but this is their last shot at justice for their son. >> i know that's what they're looking for. >> all right, paula, thank you. we'll turn now to the latest on that american dentist who killed that beloved lion, dr. walter palmer still in hiding. but one of his friends is coming to his defense and abc's ryan smith is here with that story.

he's also just back from zimbabwe where he got an inside look at the place where that famous lion lived. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, david. it was an incredible trip. we went to zimbabwe to explore his story. hunters now under fire are making the den tilt public enemy number one and now hunters under fire are telling us their side of the story. in zimbabwe we arrive at the place where cecil called home. >> it was famous. >> reporter: among his followers a lion researcher who fitted cecil with a special collar in 2008. tracking his every move until the day dr. walter palmer shot cecil dead on july 1st. palmer's guide now faces criminal charges in zimbabwe and there are calls for his extradition. he says he believed the kill was entirely legal but why he doubts

that story. adding that lion collar he used to track cecil could suggest a cover-up. >> we get the suggestion that someone is trying to fool us. >> reporter: both palmer and his guide saying they didn't know they killed a famous lion. in a court hearing, they amitt they were shocked that cecil was wearing a tracking collar but claims they removed the device, left it in a tree and contacted authorities. palmer hasn't been seen in weeks. in his hometown, chad wagner defending his longtime friend. >> the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. >> reporter: fellow hunters like rebecca francis say they know the backlash palmer is facing all too well. she became the focus of death threats after this picture went viral. now cecil's killing leaves his whole family at risk. his selfen cubs that you'll see tonight could fall prey to other lions but a miracle may save the

they never did. abc's linsey davis has the story on how people say they're being ripped off. >> reporter: across the country, homeowners distraught that the grass isn't always greener when lawn care service allegedly goes wrong, turning their green glory into a boun disgrace, some taking their complaints to youtube. >> this was a mistake. >> reporter: but it's not just complaints about work being done, sometimes it's about no work being done at all and still billed for their service. what some dissatisfied customers call ghosting. >> this area looks completely dead to me. it is just loaded with weeds. >> reporter: this florida resident's surveillance cameras were rolling when a trugreen pest control worker showed up. at his house to take care of his weed problem.

>> i hired somebody else that i thought could maintain the law and very violated my trust. >> reporter: watch. the worker takes a walk around the lawn, returns to his truck and before leaving drops the flag on the grass before providing any work. he's not allow. watch this 2010 instant caught on tape. a lawn care service worker leaving a sign in the yard and a bill for the home owner and all for nothing that business later with drew the bill. in 2014, the better business bureau received more than 5,000 complaints for a variety of reasons. average customer spent $700 annually on lawn care service by way of a year-long contract, including upkeep visits like his cameras recorded. trugreen fired the employee and refunded the customer. and issued a statement that say we have a zero tolerance policy.

their father in monaco after rutherford failed to return them last week as part of the couple's custody battle. >> no words at this moment. the couple originally agreed to share custody after their divorce, that was until the german-born giersch's visa was revoked in 2012. a california judge now ruling their son and daughter, now ages 8 and 6, live in monaco with him, allowing rutherford to only have summers with her children. rutherford has tried legally to bring her children back to the u.s. for years but says california and u.s. courts both claim to have no jurisdiction. and kelly rutherford joins us exclusively live here with the her attorney, wendy murphy is in boston. kelly, good morning. it's been a couple of days since the children are back with their father. how are you? >> i'm good. i'm good. i'm just trying to process it. and understand it, and make sense of it, really.

>> of course, you were very critical of the judge's ruling and your main issue is your children are american citizens. >> yeah, i just feel like their voices have not been heard. in a way, you know, i walked into a courtroom where, everything felt like it was already done. it was a done deal. and his mother was sitting there with plane tickets, smiling, ready to take them, nobody had heard our argument. i was accused of things that i wasn't able to even defend. >> kidnapping. >> i think kidnapping is when no one knows where the kids are. he was in communication with them every day. i wrote him an e-mail no nobody had jurisdiction in my country. and i was concerned that until somebody gave me some order saying they were coming back, you know, i talked to my lawyers, they said this was concerning on many levels, so --

>> so, you weren't prepared for them to be taken from you, what was that moment like? how were the children when they went with their grandmother? >> i'm glad they didn't have any notice in a way, i think it would van been harder. i think it was in a moment, oh, your grandma is here, you're going to go see your dad. we all had to sort of be up for them. and, you know, i was happy the way it ended up happening, because they didn't have to sit in the courtroom and watch it all happen or deal with media or anything. that would have been sort of harmful, i think. >> have you been able to speak with them since they've been back with their father? >> yes, of course, of course. i want to bring in your attorney right now, because our legal expert, dan abrams, and other legal experts, they sympathize with kelly, but they also feel that violating the court's order not returning the children on the date that she was supposed to, that was a risky move.

>> robin there was not court order requiring to send the children back. when you're an american citizen, you're not required to obey a foreign country, especially a foreign country where you have no citizenship, your father has no citizenship, your mother has no citizenship. it's preposterous to think there was a court order in place that monaco was commanding them to be arrested. that did not happen. that was not the story. you know, i heard in the package, kelly had an agreement to send the kids back. here's the agreement that matters. back in 2012, the kids were toddlers, and kelly was ordered to send the children to monaco temporarily. the children's father and kelly and the court agreed it would be a temporary stay abroad while the father got a u.s. visa or tried, and for three years he did nothing. here's the agreement that matters. the father agreed and the children were told you're not

staying here forever, it's temporary. i, your father, agree you will return to your own country, if i don't get a visa. he violated his agreement. he violated an american court order and the saddest part of this story is, no american court seems to give a damn. >> we had talked, wendy, extensively about the fact that he kept the children after the "temporary" -- and we have talked extensively about that. there's a custody hearing, september 3rd, in monaco, are you fearful that what happened this week will have an impact on that custody hearing? >> well, i mean, monaco has been incredibly kind to me and my children. and very respectful. this was the first five weeks i've had with my kids straight in six years. you know. the reason the children weren't ordered home by california, because daniel's refusing to let me see them unless i surrendered their u.s. passports.

so california ordered them home before they said they didn't have jurisdiction. then, monaco didn't demand them back. new york just sent them back. so, it was a very odd, you know, odd situation. i think that monaco has been put in this position because of the decisions made here in u.s. >> finally, you're being vocal not only for your children -- you feel this is something that happening -- >> this is happening to so many people. i have people stopping me on the streets, writing me letters, sending me envelopes of their cases. i was just in d.c., speaking with members of congress, and the state department. this is happening a lot. there needs to be laws put in place here. you're setting us up. you're setting the kids up for a problem, the parents up for a problem. i shouldn't have to fight this in a foreign court at this point. you know, this was not what was the intention much the order. >> all right, kelly thank you for being with us this morning. >> thank you. >> we'll continue to follow this and i know september 3rd is the next critical date. >> thank you so much.

attention of millions of parents now asking if their kids are also at risk. did it turn out as you thought it would? >> i went into it, i didn't know if it was going to work. i knew it was going to be a big video after i edited. i showed it to my mother and she cried. i was like, wow, this is powerful. >> reporter: to begin, he made a facebook profile posing as a 15-year-old boy. >> with the parents' permission, i friended three girls. 13, 15 and 12 years old. >> reporter: after texting and chatting on the phone, he told the girls he wanted to meet up. first, you recruited the parents. >> go ahead and try your social experiment but none of our kids are going to talk to you. >> she just said, i think my dad fell asleep you can come now. >> i'm sorry. >> you're 12 years old. >> reporter: the dramatic video sparking a barrage of social media comments, most saying it's hard to watch but needs to be seen. >> we have the parents of jenna, i'm going to text her right now. >> reporter: young girls trusting an online stranger. >> i can't believe this.
